Senate Has Enough Votes To Defeat Continuing Resolution: Government Shutdown Imminent

Tyler Durden's picture

As predicted:

  • SENATE HAS VOTES TO DEFEAT HOUSE SPENDING PLAN; VOTE CONTINUES - BBG

Next up: headline risk and a push for Bernanke to print more. Why? Because when all is said and done the market will have plunged (even more) on the realization there is no fiscal stimulus coming in the next two years, despite the Chairman's clever gambit.

From Reuters:

With aid to victims of natural disasters running out, the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate on Friday rejected a broad spending bill that had passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives hours earlier.

As voting continued on the measure, Democrats had rounded up enough votes to defeat the bill, which would replenish dwindling disaster-aid funds and ensure the government can continue to operate past Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

It's in the process of coming apart.

I never thought that I'd see this in my lifetime...

Yep. Shut it down completely.

I want to see the anti-Federal government spending welfare and food stamps recipients in the South suffer.

This will also please people such as my parents, who rely upon Social Security and MediCare as they muddle through their 70s, yet bemoan the "socialist" takeover of this country.

I'm pretty sure that there are so many recipients of government largesse that we can't fruitfully differentiate with respect to geography...  only that where there are less people, there might be less of a chance for handouts...  but I'm sure there's some payment for the land...

If you think the hollowed out manufacturing towns of yesteryear in the north are going to survive a government pullback...  well...  goodluck with that...  wallstreet?  nada...

About the only distinction you could make would be rural vs. urban...  the former likely having much less of a change in standard of living as a relative percentage.

Gold will move higher. I have seen this time and time again. It is hard, I do not disagree. We filled the gap from August, if we fail here, 1,550 could be in the cards. Man, if we can get anywhere near the bottom to add it would be awesome. IF.

Nothing has Changed. NOTHING!

And, you think it's a bad thing? Shut them all down and ship them to China, for free may I add, so they can to some good there.

QE3 isn't even needed anymore - just the hope that it's around the corner! To play of your Peanuts riff, QE3 is the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Buy the rumor?  :)  Seriously though, how many retirements have been stolen already?  Why not suck a few more dollars in and then drop it lower.  I feel bad for those I work with who have no idea what's going on.  They think everything is going to be fine as long as they don't look at it.

Yeah, the proverbial ostrich always works.

Government shutdown?  Heh.  We should be so lucky.

Spending bills must originate in the House, but budget bills can be presented by either chamber.  The nuckfut Democrats controlling the Senate havent proposed a budget in three years. THREE FUCKING YEARS.  Talk about irresponsibility.  If they truly believe that this is a left of center country, and the sheeple really want a cradle-to-grace bureaucratic nanny state, then propose a budget stating as much.  They are a bunch of spineless, gutless cowards.  This has to be the most useless Senate in the history of the republic.   Who are the idiots voting for these clowns.

Both parties of course are scum but I have to hand it to the Republican strategists. By continually generating these near-collapses, they are wearing everybody down, building up the impression that Obama = gridlock. Most centrist voters think they're pricks for it, but a lot of them will probably be more inclined to elect a Republican president just to stop this stuff. Dirty fighting, but that's Washington.

More like most centrists, which is such a bullshit concept, are likely seeing it for what it is. You know theater, and drama to keep the people distracted. Most of us tend to realize there's only one way to stop the idiocy, let the whole thing shut down.
