Your EBT Card Has Been Denied... At The Spearmint Rhino

Tyler Durden's picture

America's welfare state is about to suffer a double whammy of epic proportions. On one hand, extended unemployment benefits are now running out at a pace of 100,000+ per week, as more and more American's lose eligibility for Komrade Samov's 99-week sponsored vacation, meaning millions of Americans heretofore sitting comfortably on their couch playing Call of Duty and collecting $400 a week will now start having to think for a change - never a good thing for any regime that relies on its electorate to be docile as drunk and fat Hindu cows. And now this: "New York would prohibit welfare recipients from spending their tax-funded benefits on cigarettes, alcohol, gambling, and strip clubs under a bill passed overwhelmingly by the state Senate on Tuesday. "I understand that people need food stamps," said Republican Sen. Thomas Libous, a Broome County Republican. "What I don't understand is why they need to go to strip clubs, buy lottery tickets, go to a 'racino' or buy alcohol." Wait, you mean you can't spend other people's money to pay for a lap dance? What crazy form of inhumane austerity is this. And isn't spending taxpayer dollars at the Spearmint Rhino one of the amendments to the post-Obama constitution? But perhaps the scariest implication is that New Yorkers actually do spend their EBT money at the Spearmint Rhino right off the card, being ripped off with the traditional 15% plastic surcharge instead of just paying cash. Now that is really stupid.

More on the "Public Assistance Integrity Act"

Libous said New York must restrict the spending by recipients whose benefits are linked to debit cards to conform to federal law. President Barack Obama signed a law in February that will require states to restrict how the cash portion of social services is spent, or lose 5 percent of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families funding. New York risks losing $125 million next year.

Others questioned the need for the restrictions, saying they were a slap at the poor.

And though this Act is far from being voted through, already the civil rights brigades are screaming bloody strip club murder:

"It's a prejudice, I think, about poor people that we are seeing represented more than any statistical or study of behavior," said Sen. Bill Perkins, a Harlem Democat and one of the few senators to vote against the measure. "If they have evidence that there's a rash of that, I'd like to see it."

Then there is the GOP response:

New York's Republican senators who led the bipartisan 56-3 vote Tuesday said New Yorkers are amazed the law allows such spending now. The law prohibits the use of food stamps to buy alcohol or tobacco products, but it's allowed under the "cash allowance" contained in the EBT cards.

"'They can do that? Are you kidding me?'" said Sen. John DeFrancisco, a Syracuse Republican, in recounting constituents' reaction. "That outrage is well placed," he said.

"Right now, under the law, you can use the cash assigned for gambling, alcohol and lottery tickets," Libous said. "We get quite a few complaints on an annual basis."

Some state officials are concerned the federal measure, and its 5-percent penalty for failure to enact restrictions, infringes on states' rights to distribute federal welfare benefits under their own rules.

Of course, since most strippers, despite their name, are not equipped with magnetic strip readers, and since most EBT cards will still dispense cash, we can't help but wonder just what is the whole logic behind the idiocy of on one hand generously handing out welfare benefits to anyone with a pulse, and in some zombified cases. without, and on the other coyly posturing for political reasons.

Either way, this sadly may mean that the time to officially short RICK has come.

It, of course, also means that soon enough the #OccupyScores crowd will be firmly in place on the main dancing area, beating their bongos in sync to Pour Some Sugar On Me.

In conclusion, what else but... My EBT.

The entire welfare system is in place to keep the poor unemployed masses from rising up.  And I'll bet the government spends far more on drones bombing parties in the Middle East each month than all welfare fraud combined in a year  (not to mention bailouts and the like).  But articles like this are sure good red meat for those who justify their own lack of humanity by blaming lazy poor people for all of the world's problems.  Yes, there are lazy poor people who game the system and reasonable steps should be taken to reign in the abuse.  But all of that fraud combined is at best a tiny fraction of a percent of what the oligarchs are pulling out of the Treasury each year.

"My problem is that politicians use shit like this to distract people away from the much larger issues."

I think thats what we (or at least I) have been trying to tell you all along.

Some politicians need a welfare plantation to survive themselves, they feed off of it (literally). No one on this board wants people to be poor and beholden to or "on the hook" to anyone/anything for their next meal.

Thats why its red meat...some of "these meals" are at tittie bars...these motherfuckers can starve as far as I'm concerned.

No one is ever going to change the system you despise even a little if the majority of people are focused on the bread and circus bullshit.  This article is about circus.  A bunch of thieving no good politicians riling up the base with stories of welfare receipients going to strip clubs.  It gives them cover on their own corruption, while it gives their base a largely meaningless target for their own frustration at a system that has betrayed them.  Blame the poor people.  And the guys in caves overseas.....  and so forth.

By the way, in your utopian free market no-government society, lots of people would be beholden to or "on the hook" to others for the next meal.  It's just that they would be beholden to the giant corporations that rule with impunity instead of an elected government.  So lots of starving will occur and you will get your wish if it ever comes to pass.  At least now I understand your desired end game.

Isn't that where we find ourselves now? I wish that you understood how regulation is meant to protect the big corps and squash the competition. The only real regulation we need is bankruptcy. There should be no such thing as TBTF. Bad business practices will always lead to a bankruptcy court, and that's the ultimate regulator.

Tue, 06/19/2012 - 22:27 | Link to Comment LetThemEatRand

I understand that some regulation is misused due to corrupt politicians who allow lobbyists to write the regulations, get appointed to key regulator positions, etc.  But many regulations are hated by big business.  The solution is taking back our government from the big money, not eliminating government.  Citizens United and other Court precedent defining corporations as people for 1st Amendment and other purposes has probably doomed us all.

Unemployment checks kept all those people off the food stamp rolls. $300/week is just enough to make them ineligible. As more and more reach the 99 week mark, SNAP numbers will keep climbing. I think the reasons they kept extending benefits were twofold

1. By making them uneligible for SNAP they were also not eligible for medicaid. Think about all of those families receiving unemployment rolling onto state insurance and the massive cost already strapped states would incur. Kicking the can at it's finest....

2. I think they intentionally made unemployment compensation just high enough to keep people off assistance to keep veiled how bad things really are. The amount of people receiving SNAP assistance now is scary. Add all those unemployed people and it just might make enough people pull their heads out of the sand to reach the tipping point.... or not...

If Republicans can't, they need to be called liars, to their face, voted out of office and kept out of office. Oh, yea, "both parties are responsible." Let's hope this election is a referendum on Republicans who have shot themselves in the foot. The US does not have to be China's bee-yotch.

How is your comment less intolerant (or outright Fascist) than the people you criticize? You desire 100% conformity with your opinion, one political party, one version of "the truth." I despise most of the people you mention, but I suggest a better approach is to give voice to the true leftists to counter the views of these extreme right-wingers. Until then, you have Democrats stealing Republican ideas (Clinton/Gore pushing NAFTA, Obama pushing for nationwide RomneyCare, Obama signing immigration rule constructed by Rep. Senator Rubio, Caroline Kennedy and fellow Commissioners for Presidential Debates excluding 3rd parties, Obama extending Bush Doctrine of "preemptive strikes") instead of anything the least bit "leftist" or even democratic (small "d").

It's all part of the trickle down.  If the girls weren't getting those EBT payments they would have to go on unemployment and get their own EBT cards.  It's probably cheaper for the taxpayer this way, not that anyone gives a flying fuck about the taxpayer anymore.

"Mr. David Stockman has said that supply-side economics was merely a cover for the trickle-down approach to economic policy—what an older and less elegant generation called the horse-and-sparrow theory: If you feed the horse enough oats, some will pass through to the road for the sparrows." -- John Kenneth Galbraith

Tyler,

I realize I'm in the minority at Zero Hedge on this. But I don't think the REAL resentment in this country is either on the Low end or on the High end. It's in the Middle - the 99.99999999 percent of us who haven't gotten fabulously wealthy by breaking every rule in the book, moral as well as criminal.

Post from Seeking Alpha a few minutes ago:

Today's CME move - which, of course, everyone on the Short side is studiously refusing to talk about - is extremely Bullish for Gold.

But imagine if there were a concerted campaign to make them do the same in Silver!

JPM's "trading losses" to this point would look like chickenfeed. But the effect on world markets would be extremely positive, since everyone on the "sidelines" would know it was finally safe to go back into Markets with real enthusiasm.

JPM may have inherited most of the Largest Silver Short in Human History. But they are the ones stuck with it, and they are the ones who have to act.

IMO, everything bad - everything unfair - everything smarmy - about Markets the past 20 years has stemmed from The Silver Short and the web of derivatives upon derivatives upon derivatives it has been allowed to spawn.

It's been a blot on America itself ever since Hillary Clinton, advised by Martin Armstrong, used her Whitewater gains to Short Silver to the hilt and assured her family's fortunes for 1,000 generations to come - while all the rest of us were being Bleeped to death by pure dishonesty and corruption.

End it now, JPM.

There's never been a better time to do so.

I can tell you the EBT is the biggest scam going in L.A.

I know plenty of able-bodied working guys who somehow fudged the application and now get EBT cards.

Most of the guys are self-employed in the building trades, working under the table claiming "poverty".

Yeah, the same guys who show up at the motocross track in $60,000 Ford F-350 trucks.

These are the guys using it for strippers, cases of Monster Energy, etc.

Damn.  Must be a least two days since one of the Tylers weighs in with a standard-issue Zerohedge blame-the-victims rant like this.

Yep.  All the unemployed out there, particularly the 99ers, are just a bunch of lazy bums.

As I've said before, it's amazing the way people just got so damn lazy since the start of the Great Recession.   Back before the economy collapsed in 2008 people were working really hard and there was less than 5 percent unemployment.  Very few lazy scroungers getting unemployment benefit.

But then BANG as soon as the economy crashed everyone got lazy and the unemployment rates shot up above 10 percent and millions more people starting relying on unemployment insurance to get by.

It's really uncanny - almost like there is some sort of weird connection between how the economy is doing and how many are unemployed and reliant on welfare to live.

But of course we know that ain't true - pure co-incidence!  From 2008 on folks just decided to quit their jobs and stay at home watching TV and playing Call of Duty, just like Tyler says.  I call it the 'laziness cycle' which seems to fluctuate over the years.   Someone should look into what causes this - probably diet or something.

All I know is we need to make these god-damn, no count, pinko-punko lay-abouts pay for their laziness.   Abolish all unemployment benefits right now - that way these folks would've stayed in the work force in the first place.  Right?

Absolutely agree with you. The CEO of Walmart talks about the people being there at midnight on the day their food stamps are funded so they could buy formula and diapers and household necessities. So which is it? No doubt there are some baby daddies out there misusing their EBT cards, but there are punks everywhere. Especially in banking, they just use their easy money to make sure the pain gets deeper.

There are no dead or illegal voters, heck, we can't even get the citizens to vote! Abortion, birth control and gay marriage is people's business, let them do what they deem fit. There are too many regulations on the lower strata of the business world, and not enough at the top. We don't need to be like Greece where no one pays tax, but here they are pushing for yet more tax cuts. An army to fight the Klingons just in case they show up The only trickle down we have is rot. We are entering chapel perilous right now as a nation, last thing we need to be doing is hurting the people who are in a vise already. Focus on the problems, cut the bullshit. We were at a dinner with a French logging company's owner in Liberia, Africa decades ago. Many many bottles of wine, it's late at night, the restaurant is almost empty. Everyone uses their hands when they're talking, I don't remember who knocks over the decanter of wine, but we're all too mellow to do anything else but watch that wine stain spread...what he said then was profound in a way, he said wealth should spread like the stain we see in front of us. It increases the sphere of contact for any enterprise. It allows you to grow, a larger area to explore, have a rich ground to support you. No ship can sail above the sea of abundance it creates.

We seem to lost that truth, or maybe we never got that lesson to begin with? The abyss between the haves and the have nots is what is going to sink us all. The way through Chapel Perilous is finding the road with heart.

"Chapel Perilous, like the mysterious entity called "I," cannot be located in the space-time continuum; it is weightless, odorless, tastless and undetectable by ordinary instruments. Indeed, like the Ego, it is even possible to deny that it is there. And yet, even more like the Ego, once you are inside it, there doesn't seem to be any way to ever get out again, until you suddenly discover that it has been brought into existence by thought and does not exist outside thought. Everything you fear is waiting with slavering jaws in Chapel Perilous, but if you are armed with the wand of intuition, the cup of sympathy, the sword of reason, and the pentacle of valor, you will find there (the legends say) the Medicine of Metals, the Elixir of Life, the Philosopher's Stone, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness.

That's what the legends always say, and the language of myth is poetically precise. For instance, if you go into that realm without the sword of reason, you will lose your mind, but at the same time, if you take only the sword of reason without the cup of sympathy, you will lose your heart. Even more remarkably, if you approach without the wand of intuition, you can stand at the door for decades never realizing you have arrived."

So. Here we are. What are the tools that are expendable? How will we go forward? We need to define the paradigm before people will move towards it. Some need to see what the promised land looks like. We haven't spent much time doing that, what we have been doing is the fine brushwork on a grotesque picture everyone sees already. We are at the door. I wish we would take the time to flesh out the future so we know where we need to go, paint the world we want waiting on the the other side, rather than wallow in the swill this article invites us into.

I was right, your posts here tonight were worth wading through immature dullards, to find a bit of poetic truth.

I've been too busy with other endeavors lately to spend much time *here* - threads like these nudge my mind towards spending even less of my currently precious time sifting for anything of worth, the chatter gets so boring, predictable - but then, occasionally, I find these pure gems of thought that others leave behind, and it's like a tonic.  keeps me coming back.

"what are the tools that are expendable?" - well, I could name a few that I'd gladly put on ignore, heh. . . my mind is too tired to be of any use just now, but I will say, in answer to your thoughtful words, not everyone will choose to go where others beckon, some enjoy the chaos and will be mired in the shallows they create for themselves. . . but some will also seek higher ground, and I absolutely trust that "we" will find "each other" in the newly imagined future. . . I don't think it's reasonable to expect everyone to be inspired towards the same outcomes, but within that - again, we find each other when we do. . .the road with heart is the only way through the suffering the mind creates.

thank you again for your words shared, heady stuffs. . .

Now it has gone the way of Microsoft, being dumbed down to the point of non-fuctionality, which ought to be a criminal offense.

I need to burn a DVD across 2 disks to rescue a broken computer, so I bought a $20 Roxio product that said that it would burn large files across multiple discs.    It did not actually do that, and it quickly point to a page where you could buy another Roxio product for $109.

The insanity of even needing a "program" to burn to CD or DVD

Well, on the plus side at low income levels you arent actually paying into anything but state and local taxes.

I consider getting a small place in a fairly safe rural area and getting by on as little income as possible to be a reasonable plan these days, you arent paying into the system and can plan for a rainy day.

You are actually paying a higher percentage of your wages to the government than nearly anyone else... especially the wealthiest.  You are paying Social Security (which is a tax on income that is capped at 105,000 in income), and you are paying Medicare / Medicaid.  You are also paying local sales tax in most locations, and since you must spend nearly 100% of your income to survive, you get to spend a higher percentage of your income on sales tax than anyone else.  Welcome to the working poor in America.

Lack of federal income tax balances that out, and being able to survive at a decent level working a brainless job that takes nothing out of you instead of getting killed at work for better money 50-60 hours a week on any salaried private job is a helluva lot easier.

I have done both, its no comparison.  Putting in long weeks at a higher stress higher paying corporate monkey job and getting bled to pay for everyone else is alot worse than a laid back lower paying job in a low cost of living area.

That until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned: That until there are no longer first-class and second-class citizens of any nation; That until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race; That until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained and until the ignoble but unhappy regimes that hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique, and in South Africa in subhuman bondage have been toppled and destroyed; until bigotry and prejudice and malicious and inhuman self-interest have been replaced by understanding and tolerance and goodwill; until all Africans stand and speak as free human beings, equal in the eyes of the Almighty; until that day, the African continent shall not know peace. We Africans will fight if necessary and we know that we shall win as we are confident in the victory of good over evil. - Haile Selassie I —English translation of 1963 Speech delivered to the United Nations and popularized in a song called War by Bob Marley.

Child support, kids, college, and car are personal choices.

And yeah, on $400/wk you can live fairly well in much of the rural South.  In a small town near me you can get a 2 br townhouse or apartment for $4-450/month (that would be 2-3 times that in a northern metro area), couple hundred a month for at worst for necessary utilities, couple hundred for food (which you can get real cheap straight from growers if you go to the markets) and the bus between that and the nearest college town is free.

New Englanders make lots of noise about lower wages in the South but have absolutely no concept of how much lower cost of living is. Gas is under $3 for cash right now in my part of SC. On $325/wk unemployment life is quite livable.

Free and clear, No insurance on purpose to stick it to Odaddy cash on barrel head for the doc. No kids that I know of... (Oh wait,... there are several. But all are fullgrown now)College? Been there, done that and quit when Foriegn workers get the same jobs I would have gotten. The debt is quietly shifted to Uncle Sam each month. I dont expect to live long enough to finish paying it off. And the vehicles are paid for.

Mileage? Maybe a fillup once every 7 weeks or so depending...

Gasoline can go to 20 dollars fuck all gallon and I dont give a damn. Just keep my License and the Carry License near the holster when I do need to go out. I got some fuel on the land anyhow.

No debt to speak of.

What more do you ask for? Oh yes.. that little expedition into silver which is constantly lost on the lake.

We literally live on about 300 or so for food and gas for several of us. The rest is surplus.

The single most expensive shit is actually ATT. Between the wireless, Landline (That has been the same copper for almost 40 years) and internet it's over 200 per month.

That would be cut entirely once what is left of family pass on.

I'm sure Krugman can come up with some sort of liberal explation for this... something like "individual rights", "protection under the constitution", etc...

I'm sure there are a few good honest people who really needed this money and were able to use it... however 99 weeks is almost 2 years... which is a disincentive in itself.

I was wondering where Jamie Dimon and Blankfein were spending all our money.

What was meant as a band-aid has become a crutch. Unfortunately the wounds would not heal and the patient has suffered terminal decline.
