The reason? As this Nanex chart [8]of ES orderbook levels show, there is zero, zilch, nada liquidity in the ES (purple line, compare to orange yesterday).

Which means that should yesterday's volumes carry over into today (volumes which were so high, bank dark pools had to rebuff orders [10] as they couldn't handle the order surge) and move a market in which there is virtually no orderbook buffer, the S&P will certainly jump around like a rabid bull on meth.
