Local NBC, FOX, and CBS stations are confirming earlier reports of smoke (so far of an unknown origin) which filled L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station in Washington D.C. this afternoon. Early reports suggested minimal injuries but NBC Washington [7] now confirms one woman died and 84 have been hospitalized. The cause of the smoke remains under investigation.

As NBC Washington reports, [7]
One woman died after the upper level of the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station filled with smoke Monday afternoon.
Eighty-four people were hospitalized after the fire at one of the busiest stations in the rail system is out, but the cause remains under investigation.
One train was in the tunnel when the smoke was reported about 3:20 p.m., and the first concern was attending to those passengers, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said.
Evacuations were completed before 5 p.m., according to Metro Transit Police.
Firefighters gained access to the tunnel at one of the evacuation points at Ninth Street and Maine Avenue SE. One firefighter was taken from that location in an ambulance.
D.C. Fire and EMS set up a decontamination center for its firefighters who went into the tunnel.
The FBI is assisting Metro Transit Police in determining a cause, which is standard procedure for incidents in the capital region.

WMATA says it still does not know the source of the smoke. A District of Columbia fire department spokesman says firefighters are on the scene but did not immediately find a fire.
Transit police say NTSB is launching an investigation into the incident.
