Dependence On Central Banks Is "Unrealistic And Dangerous", BIS Warns

"All this points to weaknesses in domestic and international policy arrangements - arrangements that have so far been unable to constrain sufficiently the build-up and unwinding of hugely damaging financial booms and busts across countries.Hence a world in which debt levels are too high, productivity growth too weak and financial risks too threatening. This is also a world in which interest rates have been extraordinarily low for exceptionally long and in which financial markets have worryingly come to depend on central banks' every word and deed, in turn complicating the needed policy normalisation. It is unrealistic and dangerous to expect that monetary policy can cure all the global economy's ills."

Market Risk, Model Smash

Seeing the market crash from a few weeks ago, it is clear how quickly the market can ferociously hurdle in front of one's risk models. Risk models that failed to safeguard against risk when it mattered the most.  Models that left many large hedge funds hemorrhaging - top funds which by definition were supposed to protect their investors in the August tumult.  Instead when markets broke bad, a lot of things "went wrong"; and stayed that way.

Crossing Borders With Gold And Silver Coins - A Glimpse Of Things To Come

It’s well-known that you have to make a declaration if you physically transport $10,000 or more in cash or monetary instruments in or out of the US, or almost any other country; governments collude on these things, often informally. But we've recently had some disturbing experiences crossing borders with coins...

A Recipe For The Mother Of All Short Squeezes?

Positioning across the world's most-levered financial instruments has never been this crowded. With such extreme positioning across the equity, vol, and bond complex, it would seem no matter what The Fed does in September, there will be blood.

This Is Another "Subprime" Waiting To Blow

The 2008 global financial crisis was centered on mortgage debt. There was too much of it that couldn’t be repaid. When the value of the collateral – homes – headed down, the bubble popped. Today, consumers have about the same amount of debt. But now the excesses are in auto loans and student debt... and again, the collateral is falling in value.

A Libertarian Stand On Immigration: Refugees and Migrants In A World Of Government Meddling

The topic of immigration has become increasingly pressing but, unfortunately, the libertarian movement has not reached a consensus on this issue. But it should be easy, considering how government is at both ends of the problem: government is the number one reason people choose to escape their countries, whether because of governments’ war or devastating poverty due to the lack of opportunities in regulated markets; and government is the reason ordinary people, in a desperate state because their lives have been forcefully uprooted, have a hard time choosing where to lead their lives in peace. The desperation is due to the so-called “failings” of their own governments, and augmented by ours.

Why The Keynesian Chorus Is Cackling Like Chicken Little

This is getting way too stupid. The Keynesian Chorus has launched a full blast trilling campaign, emitting an increasingly shrill cackle of warnings against a Fed rate hike. Yes, 80 months of pumping free money into the canyons of Wall Street is not enough. Why? Well, this is hard to type with a straight face, but according to the cackling gaggle of Keynesian Chicken Littles, the Fed has already tightened too much!

Economic Crisis: How You Can Prepare Over The Next Six Months

We wouldn’t say that it is “never too late” to prepare for potential disaster because, obviously, the numerous economic and social catastrophes of the past have proven otherwise. There simply comes a point in time in which the ignorant and presumptive are indeed officially screwed. We will say that we have not quite come to that point yet here in the U.S., but the window of opportunity for preparation is growing very narrow.

"Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death": The Loss Of Our Freedoms In The Wake Of 9/11

What began with the passage of the USA Patriot Act in October 2001 has snowballed into the eradication of every vital safeguard against government overreach, corruption and abuse. Since then, we have been terrorized, traumatized, and acclimated to life in the American Surveillance State.

MI6 "ISIS Rat Line" & The Threat To India

The prosecution of a Swedish national accused of terrorist activities in Syria has collapsed at the Old Bailey after it became clear Britain’s security and intelligence agencies would have been deeply embarrassed had a trial gone ahead, the Guardian reported.  "The prosecution abandoned the case, apparently to avoid embarrassing the intelligence services. The defence argued that going ahead with the trial would have been an “affront to justice” when there was plenty of evidence the British state was itself providing “extensive support” to the armed Syrian opposition. That didn’t only include the “non-lethal assistance” boasted of by the government (including body armour and military vehicles), but training, logistical support and the secret supply of “arms on a massive scale”."

Android 'Porn App' Secretly Snaps Photos, Blackmails Users

Forget nuclear facility sabotage; ignore stock market glitches; the world of cyber-threats just got serious. As The Telegraph reports, an Android app virus seduces users by promising porn but takes compromising photos of them to use as blackmail. The 'ransomware' demands a ransom of $500 (paid via PayPal) and warns "your device has been blocked for safety reasons listed below. All your files are encrypted. You are accused of viewing/storage and/or dissemination of banned pornography." Given the populist rhetoric among the presidential candidates (and urge for the younger demographic's vote), this would seem like a slam-dunk for any administration's cyber-crime unit.
