Man Pretends To Be Hank Paulson To Make Fake $353,000 Mortgage Payment To Citi, Succeeds

Perhaps the most surreal fact about the case of 35 year old Bryan Gardner who back in 2009 sent CitiMortgage a $353,000 money order "drawn on the account of the 'Secretary of the Treasury Hank M. Paulson, Jr." in order to satisfy the final payment for a property in Bowie, Md, is that.... he succeeded. Fox Biz has more: "CitiMortgage erroneously accepted the document and credited Gardner's mortgage account in full," according to a Secret Service affidavit. Within months, Gardner sold the property for $254,900 and then "distributed the proceeds to others," according to public records and the Secret Service affidavit. Investigators believe Gardner may have initially secured the mortgage under false pretenses. Through a spokesman, an FBI agent who investigates mortgage fraud said he was surprised the scheme succeeded, and a former Justice Department official who helped lead fraud enforcement efforts in the wake of the financial meltdown agreed, calling the approval of the money order "bizarre." Perhaps what is more bizarre is just how a plan like this, which a 3 year old could concoct, but not even a 3 year old would be dumb enough to believe it would fly, actually succeeded. Just how big is the pool of "unclaimed" cash on deposit at CitiMortgage is there was i) no actual account was debited for the full amount and ii) nobody noticed that the Treasury department was paying off a private mortgage.

Boehner Just Took Debt Ceiling Negotiations Back Five Steps, Calls Obama's Request "Blank Check", Invokes Visions Of Hank Paulson

In a posting on his blog, Boehner just managed to snag any progress in the debt ceiling negotiation, saying that the president "is trying to set up a no-win situation for taxpayers: either he gets his $2.4 trillion blank check, or America defaults", generatinged much despised PTSD visions of Hank Paulson' staccato threats in Congress, and in doing so making any compromise he may have been pursuing with the Tea Party virtually impossibly and certainly nearly unpracticable with just 3 days before the absolute legal deadline this Thursday. Perhaps that is just the reason why bonds suddenly ripped. Remember: bonds will be bought if sendng is curtailed and no incremental debt will be layered... to a point. Should the US default, buying will turn to selling, first very slowly, then very fast.

Your Chance To Own A Tiny 3" Piece Of Hank Paulson

As if adding insult to injury each and every day with wave after wave of POMO, even as the criminals on Wall Street continue to go about their business, collecting record bonuses, without even the remotest threat of prosecution, wasn't enough the US Mint is now openly micturating in the face of what little is left of US middle class with the issuance of the "Peregrine" Paulson (3 inches) bronze medal. That's right: starting today, everyone can own a tiny 3 inch piece of Hank: the same man who in October 2008 barged into congress with a three page proposal demanding Congress give him supreme dictatorial powers over this country, and to dispense an uncapped amount of money in rescuing his former company and anyone else he saw fit. The description of the reverse: " The image of the peregrine falcon represents Secretary Paulson’s commitment to conservation and his long-time interest in birds of prey." Wouldn't it be more fitting to find a creature celebrating Hank's commitment to fraud, communism, bail outs, and the Goldman way? We eagerly await William Banzai's take on the Silver Vampire Squid Paulson coin which, if we find an appropriate dealer, we would be happy to sell directly to readers (if there is any physical silver remaining of course). Failing that a coin showing Blythe Masters on the front and Gary Gensler on the back would be a perfect substitute...

How Hank Paulson Broke The Law: "This Will Be A Disclosable Event And We Do Not Want A Disclosable Event" - Parsing The Ken Lewis "MAC" Deposition

Among some of the discoveries of the financial crisis is that the entire financial system is now, following the Lehman bankruptcy, built entirely on fraud. And while Ken Lewis may spend the remainder of his days on some private island with stolen taxpayer money providing for his every last wish, it was he, in following the Fed's and the Treasury's orders to make a mockery of fiduciary responsibility, that was among the first people to confirm that there is no rule of low in America, or rather whatever law there is, it only applies to the less than immortal (i.e. the sub-banker class). Below, in an indication that Zero Hedge will never forget, we present the salient highlights from the Ken Lewis deposition on the MAC clause surrounding the Merrill transition, emphasizing the threats from Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke. For as long as neither of these three is in jail for what is documented shareholder (and taxpayer) fraud, we fail to see why the remaining 300+ million Americans continue to diligently pay their share of taxes into a government that is now beyond (and in full documentation) corrupt. Also, how BofA's lawyer Wachtell was not at all present during the discussion of the MAC clause, makes a complete mockery of the US legal process in its entirety. We wonder just when the official scribe of the kleptocracy, Andrew R. Sorkin, will write a book disclosing the truth of what happened, including a listing of all the laws broken with full premeditation by every single player, and not the watered down, PG13 (and rather expensive)version that makes everyone come out like a law-abiding superman.

Hank Paulson's Prepared Testimony: More Alternative Universe Destruction

More death and destruction, this time from Hank Paulson: "The decision to rescue AIG was correct, and I strongly supported it. An AIG failure would have been devastating to the financial system and the economy. We could not have anticipated the magnitude of AIG’s problems; and we had no way of letting it fail without disastrous collateral consequences" but "I was not involved in any of the decisions made with respect to those payments, nor was I involved in any of the decisions about AIG’s public disclosure of those payments. Those matters were handled by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Federal Reserve Board." And Tim wasn't in charge... So who the hell was it?

Hank Paulson To Testify Tomorrow

A Hill aide has indicated that Hank Paulson has accepted the invitation, and will be present for tomorrow's grilling, keeping his old buddy Tim-O Tax company. We still have to hear if the last straggler, Goldman's Stephen Friedman, will also join the patriarchs of the wealth transfer plan under oath.

Hank Paulson's Speed Dial #1: Goldman Sachs

It would appear that employees of the NY Post can do more than merely plant stories and spread unfounded rumors. Some of them actually do investigative work. Case in point - John Crudele, who has compiled FOIA reports to create a chronological narrative of Hank Paulson's speed-dialing in the days after the Lehman collapse, in a piece titled "The secret to Goldman Sachs' good fortune." The net result: more communication between Paulson and Blankfein during the heart of the crisis than anyone else (including then-President Bush), with the only exception of Ben Bernanke. Just what were these two people talking about so frequently in the two days when the Dow made an 800 point round trip? And just who was leaking the rumors that ultimately were based on information sourced by Hank Paulson himself? Crudele's chronology presents a relevant framework for analyzing just who the critical decision-makers are in US financial markets. Hopefully one day phone transcripts will be released and the full picture of just what information Blankfein was getting straight from his former boss can be reconstructed.

Hank Paulson's Prepared Testimony Ahead Of Tomorrow's Hearings

Hank Paulson: "Although attention has recently focused on brief moments of stress during the events of December 2008, those moments are not foremost in my recollection."
