Facebook, Instagram Experiencing "Extreme" Outages As Complaints Pile Up

Facebook and Instagram are down for thousands of users across the world this morning, with websites like Outage Report recording “extreme” outages in the US Hungary, Kosovo, Germany, Poland and other countries. The sites went down shortly after 11 a.m.

This is the second widespread outage for both social networks (Instagram is owned by Facebook) in less than two months. Facebook blamed the most recent outage, which occurred on Aug. 26, on unspecified “technical issues.”

Most complaints are reporting a total blackout with many others complaining that users are unable to log in. Many other sites are showing up as having "extreme" outages, according to NBC 4.

The outage doesn’t appear to be affecting all users, and the cause for issues aren’t immediately clear.  Facebook has yet to issue a statement.

The website outage report said almost 2,000 users had complained that they couldn’t reach the site in the last 20 minutes, while downdetector.com said it had seen a spike in reported problems including a total blackout for some users, difficulty logging in and problems with the apps. Facebook users took to Twitter to complain that the site was down, according to the FT.

As the outage continues into its second hour, social media managers everywhere are probably starting to panic....

With right html code a comment can make your computer its bitch.

And here most people thing annoying advertising is the only way to make money on the Internet.

Malicious html code could install a key logger, search your computer for a Bitcoin wallet and covertly try everything you ever type as its passkey until it unlocks and then sends an untraceable (fake MAC ID) spend over public WiFi.

Or it could find the keystroke logger NSA paid Microsoft to install at the factory on your computer and find your bank and investment account logins and steal all your money that way.

"HTML can't do that" True. Its the browser user combination reacting to the supposed html that starts things happening.

Never had your browser freezer or crash? What if it did not crash but started executing some of the bytes from that last request? Lots of bytes in images. Enough for some bootstrap code?

Scripting is no doubt loaded with attack vectors also.

Last FB outage I heard of had people dialing 911. For real. Police departments had to post and tweet to not call them for facebook.

The end times might not be so bad after all. Instead of desperate crowds roaming the streets in search of food they will all be huddled in derelict buildings posting each other.

Dude. There's no food. Where's the food? Do you have food? How do you get food? Send a selfie!
