Seattle Backpedals On Homeless Housing Tax After Amazon, Starbucks Protest

The Seattle City Council voted 7-2 on Tuesday to repeal a "head tax" on the city's largest companies - less than a month after the legislature approved the tax of $275 per employee for local companies that gross at least $20 million annually

The tax would have raised $47 million annually from around 600 businesses to feed and house the homeless - however after dozens of businesses funded an effort to repeal the tax, including Starbucks and Amazon which kicked in $25,000 each, it was repealed.

The vote, at a special meeting called by Council President Bruce Harrell, came less than a month after the council approved the tax of $275 per employee, per year to help fund housing and services for homeless people. It also came as leaders of a referendum campaign to repeal the tax had been preparing to submit their signatures.

For the city’s leaders, the move amounts to an embarrassing about-face. Only a few weeks ago, Durkan and council members hailed the tax as an important step in Seattle responding to a homelessness state of emergency declared back in 2015. -Seattle Times

Many at Tuesday's City Council meeting rallied against the reversal, shouting "stop the repeal!"

Proponents of the tax say Amazon and other large companies need to do more to help people living in tents, cars and shelters because the city’s tech-industry boom has contributed to inequality in recent years by driving up rents and home prices.

But the politicians didn’t count on how quickly business leaders would mount a big-money referendum campaign and apparently misjudged how many ordinary voters would support the effort out of frustration with City Hall’s handling of homelessness. -Seattle Times

Given the political leanings of Amazon and Starbucks management, it's always interesting to see what happens at the intersection of progressive ideology and capitalism. For some strange reason, capitalism seems to win just about every time...

Don't like what you are paid? Quit.....You always have a choice.

Unless you are a total idiot and like working at Starfucks.

The issue is not Starfucks or Amazony,,,,,all the larger companies would have to pay it.

The issue is the total fucking retards in city Gov. that are unwilling to get rid of the homeless problem.

Throwing money at a problem, never solves it.......Unless the problem is a Chinese Hooker.

Does anybody believe building a few housing units will solve thousands of homeless situations? A homeless camp ground with toilets, showers, electric stations, and security might be affordable and really get the homeless out from under bridges. What are the odds? Middle class liberals only deal in schemes that are almost good enough for themselves. For those few they do house where is the motivation to work hard and move up?

As long as there's a welfare state, hard-working people like you are cucks, paying taxes so that niggers can live and breed like rabbits on $0 an hour.

We need to turn our welfare offices into deportation offices. First visit, we arrange transportation back to your home country. Second visit -- why are you still here? -- you and all your mystery-meat kids get sterilized. No visit, we assume you've found gainful employment and cut off your benefits.

No one can live above a bare minimum on $15?

Maybe that's why it's called minimum wage.

Many of the people you're bitching about started working at 13 and as young adults had two or three jobs and very, very little sleep. They did whatever was necessary to get the job done and get ahead. They made it because they aimed higher than the bottom of the barrel even if that's where they had to start.

Minimum wage is the consolation prize for 13 year olds or idiots who were holding the door when brains were being passed out and nothing more.

Zendog, a lot of people can't do complex jobs, so they have to work at places like Starbucks, as there are no other blue collar jobs available. But they can't live off of what they are paid. And you seem to blame them for working anywhere they are not paid enough, when there is no where they can work and be paid a proper salary.

You also seem to think that cities should just "get rid of the homeless problem" as if people are just cans to be kicked down the road.

When was working at Starbucks, or any fast food dump, ever considered a career or for that matter a trade?  The trades are dying for apprentices.   Specifically, carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electricians.  Go out in the real world and talk to some of these people.  Most of the good ones are aging out and cannot find any millennials that want to work or to learn the trade.  For the 60 years prior to the last Administration, a job at a fast food outlet was temporary and/or part-time work for 95% of the people that were employed in the industry.

It was not until the SEIU and their shills (backed by the Demorats, Soros NGOs et, al) started pushing "livable wage" to ensure that the SEIU leadership was taking home a half million dollar salaries every year and that the liberals could continue scamming campaign funds off the backs of the food services industry workers membership dues did "livable wage" ever enter into the discussion.  If the SEIU and Dems are so concerned about livable wages then the SEIU should make their membership dues affordable or cut their executive leaderships salaries to $100k or less and stop contributing to political campaigns putting money back into the the pockets of the workers.  None of which will ever happen.

The issue is the total fucking retards in city Gov. that are unwilling to get rid of the homeless problem.

The Seattle and King County governments largely created the homeless problem with their insane zoning laws and construction mandates that only makes it profitable for construction companies to construct McMansions on postage stamp-sized lots and McCondos out of existing apartment complexes. It's highly profitable to buy poor housing as a "tear-down" for the lot on which to build McMansions.

It's next to impossible to build your own house on your own land anywhere in Washington. Even when you buy a 5 acre tract in the middle of nowhere, chances are it still has an HOA or overzealous county inspectors that spend all day checking the latest satellite images for (((unauthorized))) structures. Concrete can only start pouring after you have paid tens of thousands in extortion fees to all of the proper (((authorities))).

Whoa Dammit...so, as an adult, let me tell you that working as a Barista at Starbucks or taking orders at Taco Bell is not going to give you that. You either have to lower your living standards or go get a higher paying job. Perhaps you will need to have two jobs just to support your "basic" needs...welcome to adulthood!!! jump on in the water is fine.

" If companies like Starbucks and Amazon paid their employees a living wage, thee would not be so many homeless."

If government didn't tax workers so much, workers would have a lot more money.   There was a long period in the US (from 1790 thru 1910) when the federal government consumed less than 3% of GDP.  Now it's closer to 20%.  You want a 17% wage increase, then put the federal government back into it's place, limited to protecting us from criminals and foreign enemies, rather than allowing it to protect us from our own actions and engage in redistribution of income for votes.

When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's I never dreamed that anyone would ever consider a restaurant or fast food/cafe job as a career. It was just unheard of. I made more money mowing lawns part-time than anyone I ever knew who worked fast food or restaurant jobs. Hell, I made more money per month bagging groceries part-time at the Homestead AFB commissary than I earned later in the Marine Corps.

Their workers were not among the applicants that I saw when working at the Department of Human Services, albeit many of them, no doubt, cannot afford housing. Contrary to public myth, the assistance is almost entirely allocated to single-earner mommas and legal / illegal immigrants in the households of male breadwinners with US-born kids. Much smaller allotments go to the elderly. Non-elderly adults without children need not apply in most cases, but they do need to pay their taxes when employed, assuming they are citizens. They claimed that the homeless in Seattle included a lot of children. Not.

HELLO SPAM-LOVERS!!!   BIG UP from the SPAMMER BUNKHOUSE here in the Methfilled Valley Trailer Park in Methfilled Valley, PA.  Good to see my men Leakanthrophy and Wadalt and  PrivetHedge  and our newbies  ll951983  and  gzcekkyret  out from under the couch sucking their own dicks and back on the threads SPAMMING like a Grease Fire!!!!

Biblicism     AND    TodaysFox ("I made $7000 sucking cock on the Internet")  IT's ALL THE SAME SPAMMER!

THIS is an important week here in the SPAMMER's BUNKHOUSE (the leaking moldy single-wide in the trailer park).  This week I (we?) are celebrating SEVEN YEARS here on ZH, obsessively SPAMMING every thread we can with off-topic comments.  You see, there are dozens of "personalities" living in this one single sad SPAMMER's sick little mind, which he calls "Spammer's Bunkhouse."  How sick is that?

Each of "us" (these innumerable fake log-on's) is represented by an ACTION FIGURE that Master Spammer ("DARWIN" is his name -- can you believe that?)  lines up on his kitchen counter and TALKS TO!!  WHACK JOB!!!

SAD BUT TRUE!!  I (we?) have wasted my (our) youth (or at least the last seven years) with at least one hand in my pants and the other hand SPAMMING ZH.  Yes, indeed.  DOZENS and DOZENS (maybe hundreds) of log-on's banned --
>>  "I made $7500 last week on the Internet sucking cock!": that's me.
>>  Biblicism: that's me.
>>  All the porn at Celebrity-leaks: that's me.
>>  Daily Westerner: that's me.

>>  "In the news....SPAMMER broomsticked by furious readers" -- registered in Nigeria) :: that's me TOO!!

That's our life (all of us living in Master Spammer's Mind): mopping the floor at the Porn Cinema at 2am, working the French Frier at SONIC (demoted from the drive-thru window 'cuz my ZIT-covered face scared the customers), sucking cock on the Internet, and spamming ZH with an enormous Excel spreadsheet of the log-on's of dozens of "digital friends" who upvote one another and virtually suck my little micro penis..

MEET my current imaginary friends.  We all live in one SPAMMER's HEAD (and as ACTION FIGURES on his kitchen counter) but as for me, I have gone off the reservation.  These other "personalities" are pretty troubled.
