Career State Department Officer Rages: 5 Media Myths Of Trump-Kim Summit

In the midst of Tuesday's historic Trump-Kim summit and accompanying myriad pundits giving their hot takes on mainstream news networks, 24-year State Department veteran and geopolitics expert Peter Van Buren began an epic rant on twitter with the following: "If you're keeping score at home, every pundit and MSM head who claimed the summit would never happen, or Trump would blow up, is now 100% and forever wrong. Still watching CNN????"

Van Buren is best known as a whistleblower who was ousted from a successful career as a foreign service officer after he chronicled the astronomical amount of US government waste, fraud, criminality and abuse in post-Saddam Iraq based on his experience leading two reconstruction teams for the State Department.

His 2011 book, We Meant Well: How I Helped Lose the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People, which precipitated a lengthy legal battle with the US government as he stood accused of leaking allegedly sensitive and classified information in the book, initially earned him the ire of beltway bureaucrats, mainstream pundits, fanatical neocons, and liberal interventionists alike. But he was proven right

During and after the Trump-Kim meeting Van Buren live tweeted in reaction to the cable news shows repeatedly slamming the whole event as a charade merely meant to score domestic propaganda victories for both leaders.

Here are 5 media myths which persisted throughout the day's wall-to-wall mainstream coverage based on career State Department expert Peter Van Buren's analysis...

* * *

Myth #1: Trump "betrayed" US ally South Korea

No, the South Korean's were not "betrayed" or "abandoned" as Vox , MSNBC, and many others claim — the reality is opposite: the peace efforts are being led by the South Koreans, as President Moon Jae-in's own unambiguous words indicate, saying he was very happy with the meeting.

"I offer my heartfelt congratulations and welcome the success of the historic North Korea-United States summit," Moon's statement begins.

The fact remains that 81% of South Koreans supported the summit, and 88% supported the prior Kim-Moon summit. Moon also has an 86% approval rating. 70% of Americans support the meeting.

The pundits now claiming "betrayal" of South Korea have no clue what they're talking about.

Myth #2: Trump "empowered" and "legitimized" Kim

Most government pundits still making the rounds on the cable news shows are either former Obama-era officials or raving necons: as Van Buren points out they were part of the problem to begin with, creating a constant haze of impressions that Washington and Pyongyang must of necessity be on a permanent war footing.

As Van Buren writes in his new Reuters op-ed piece"Trump did not empower Kim. Meeting with one’s enemies is not a concession. Diplomacy is not a magic legitimacy powder the United States can choose to sprinkle on a world leader. The summit acknowledges the like-it-or-not reality of seven decades of Kim-family rule over a country armed with nuclear weapons."

Van Buren outlines the failures of those who previously revolted at the State Department due to a claimed "void" at the center of the Trump White House's Korea policy and diplomacy:

Only a few months ago State Department North Korean expert Joseph Yun's retirement triggered a round of dire claims of "a void at [the] head of Trump's Korea diplomacy". Similar predictions were made over the lack of an American ambassador in Seoul. The State Department was decimated. ("The Trump administration has lost the capacity to negotiate with other countries," wrote one journalist.) The Council on Foreign Relations assessed the chances of war on the peninsula at 50 percent.

"They're the last people anyone should be listening to at this point" as it was their "earlier failures" in diplomacy that "made the summit necessary," Van Buren concludes.

Myth #3: The summit marks a "propaganda victory" for North Korea

Media commentators throughout the day were outraged to see the American and North Korean flags displayed on equal footing.

Van Buren responds by pointing out what is obvious and common protocol for all such historic summits, even the potentially contentious ones, including Obama's trip to Havana to mend US-Cuban relations in 2016:

The Cuban and American flags together: President Obama and President of Cuba Raúl Castro at their joint press conference in Havana, Cuba, March 21, 2016. Image source: Flickr

Finally, he notes that the US MSM has finally found a new friend: the North Korean propaganda machine.

Myth #4: Trump "gave away the store" with "too many concessions"

The ink was barely dry on the Trump-Kim signed agreement when Bloomberg ran this headline: "Trump Gives Away the Store in Singapore".

Nope, says Van Buren. He responds: "What didn’t happen in Singapore is also important. Trump did not give away 'the store.' In fact, there is no store Trump could have given away. The United States agreed to suspend military exercises which have been strategically canceled in the past, and which can be restarted anytime. The real deterrent is off-peninsula anyway: B-2s flying from Missouri, and missile-armed subs forever hidden under the Pacific."

Myth #5: The agreement will fail for lack of details and its vagueness

Van Buren writes: "It is easy to announce a morning-after defeat for Trump: to criticize the agreement as vague and lacking in specific commitments regarding denuclearization. But those critics ignore Kim's moratorium on nuclear and ballistic missile testing, the return of American prisoners, the closing of a ballistic missile test site, and the shutting down of a major nuclear test facility without opening a new one."

And he points out just how close the world was to major war a mere months ago: "It is easy to forget that a few months ago North Korea was still testing nuclear devices to spark fears of a dark war. Calling the Singapore summit a failure in light of more detailed agreements and different efforts from the past ignores the reality that all of those past agreements failed."

And finally, Van Buren says there's reason to be cautiously optimistic after Tuesday's summit:

Success on the Korean peninsula, as in the Cold War, will be measured by the continued sense that war is increasingly unlikely.

...The summit created the platform. The key to what happens next is how Trump, Moon and Kim work to resolve that issue.

We wholeheartedly agree: this week has brought many reasons to be hopeful for the future of US-North Korean relations.

It's not just the "left".  Most Dems and Reps are on the same war profiteering team with their "Intel" community.

MSM out of touch with reality is not by accident or out of stupidity or ignorance.  They are the propaganda machine for the deep state.  Their job is to construct and reinforce a false reality which a large number of sheeple still believe.  As this is exposed MSM is becoming more desperate and spinning more and more ridiculous narratives to try to hold on, which only causes more people to question them.  Death spiral...

The other side of this is all the millions of sheeple that have to face the fact that they have been duped and living in a false reality for their entire lives - think of Neo vomiting when he was unplugged from the Matrix and realized his entire life up to that point was not real.  It will not be easy for them and they will need help in the adjustment process.

Working for and achieving Peace is good PR for all those involved.  Its so nice to see someone that is experienced in this line of work commenting on how horrible the MSM is and how controlled they are.  Its also nice to have a actual President that does what he says even with backstabbers at every turn and a Media hell bent on undermining him.  Such a breath of fresh air from Obama and Bush.

Pretty funny how the Left has now become the Neo-cons and they don't even realize it.

There is information we don't know here.

Something radical changed in Kim's world.  The sudden about face when the "talks were off" - where he insisted on continuing the momentum toward diplomacy rather than reverting to saber-rattling - is extremely interesting.  For some reason, Kim needed to stop this.

Trump will take credit, and to be fair to him, he has allowed the event to go forward in a way such that Kim is maintaining face, which is absolutely critical in this situation.  But in truth, Trump happens to be in the right place at the right time.  Kim is clearly ready to be done with this for some reason we from outside cannot see.  My speculation (which is only that): the north is broke.  They are unable to command and organize their resources in such a way that the regime could continue.  If Kim was unable to maintain even his security structure in such a way that he felt "safe" at the helm, it seems his behavior would look much like what we are seeing.

Which is exactly what happened to Gorbachev in the ex- Soviet Union.  And like Gorbachev, Kim is deciding to forgo the bloodbath in favor of a less violent end to the status quo.  I commend him for that; this suggests he is a far more insightful leader than the MSM have made him out to be.

If this trend continues on the peninsula, it certainly should not be held against Trump.  A peaceful path forward is what we SHOULD want.  Those arguing against it are the usual war hawks.  And any defeat for that group is a success for the vast majority of humanity!

He needed to stop it because the Sanctions were cutting off the money that was flowing to the top people around him.  He would of eventually been killed and he knew it.  With the flow of money cut off the people's lives would of gone back to starvation and a starving population will KILL anyone they think they need to in order to get food again.  A orderly transition is preferred to a revolution.  All the Top brass in N. Korea will continue to be the super wealthy in the new N. Korea.  I believe they made the choice better to be alive with plenty of power then dead with absolute power.

And what exactly has TRUMP done?

He SCRAPPED a comprehensive Nuclear deal with Iran that took years (just to please Israhell), but SIGNED a mere "non-binding letter of intent" with N Korea and called it VICTORY.

Artist's IMPRESSION of Satanyahoo RIDING Trump

Jeez! He could have done this with KIM via email instead of wasting taxpayers' money in Singapore.

I guess he needed photo ops for that NOBEL Peace Prize, which his narcissist self is coveting real bad.

There is information we don't know here. Something radical changed in Kim's world.

I happen to think Styxhexenhammer got this one correct: The Pompeo visit to China. Styx thinks that Pompeo told the Chinese, "Okay, look. DPRK has the H-bomb now, and there's no way in hell we're going to stand by, waiting on them to nuke Tokyo or Hawaii or some shit. The invasion is imminent, and you'd better think twice about interfering." The ChiComs, wanting no part of that shitshow - and knowing that unlike the last 4 presidents, Trump ain't fuckin' around - promptly told Kim to either quit being a Bond villain or go get fucked. Kim chose to seek a path to come out the other side with his head still attached to his body, and with is cushy lifestyle more or less intact.

Yeah, I think this is a 100% Trump victory. the SK president saying Trump should get the Nobel Peace Price would appear to confirm this as well.

The media is made up of homosexuals and Jews. Israeli genetic scientist have reported 40% of Jews are inbred and have the schizophrenia gene. Both homosexuals and Jews who are inbred, function in inverted logic, the opposite of reality. Inverted logic is the opposite of normal human logic.

These people who report the opposite of what is correct are schizophrenic homosexuals and Jews.

The opposite of Deplorables are the loony tunes trying to do as much damage to normal people with the new normal movement. The ranks of the communist are made up of homosexuals and Jews. The Democratic Party is now the communist party, their platform is to destroy us. They want to kill us, not work together for a better nation, a better people, a better world. They're trying to take over to dictate and control our lives, that is what's happening. Everything they do is destructive to our nation and people.

The other element is to turn people of color against whites. The communist are instigating a race war to destroy America. Schumer, Pelosi are defending foreign MS13 rampage against white America and this is accepted among the most militant Hispanics and Blacks. The objective is to flood the nation with people of color for a race war at civil war levels. Does that sound like people who want to be citizens of your country? no it sounds like the planning for a war zone civil war, a bloody confrontation leading to genocide of the whites.

It's because if we aren't like the inbred then the inbred will plot to kill us. It is the history of the world, inbred species always kill off the normal species.

Read the history of North Korea. Since 1876, the Japanese have lorded over Korea and directly occupied the peninsula since 1910. It wasn't until 1945 that the Japanese grip on Korea was released. Then, the Russians and Chinese Communists immediately tried to seize Korea. That was when the UN stepped in.

The bottom line is Korea has been on it's heels for many generations and really couldn't trust anyone. When the Chinese and Russians had a parting, the Koreans, again, had to survive somehow between the great powers.

China, while still a dictatorship of sorts, has turned to capitalism and warmed to the idea that NK can do so also. That, ultimately, is why NK can be "free" to open up to the world. That, and Trump agreeing to having the Kim family remain in dictatorial power allowed the summit and future normalization to begin.

I was a soldier in Korea for many years. later I was a teacher and a business consultant for many years. I speak Korean, ate their food and slept with their women. I know Korea real well.

I believe Trump did a job no political leader representing the Deep State would have done for this nation and the world. Trump wasn't representing the Deep State, he was representing the American people. He did the best job imaginable, it couldn't have been any better.

The peaceful reunification of the Korean people through business is a noble cause. Trump's performance was the best I've seen to date of all US leadership.

I worked real hard for this opening in the 90's, the move toward peace through business was moving forward with factories and the mountain resort opened in the north. General Park's daughter became the president and destroyed this effort. She's the one who started the military drills, closed the factory and resort. She's in prison now.

We must return to peace through business with security guarantees. Security guarantees would be an end to the decapitation military drills. The denuclearization of North Korea, then a scheduled time table of US troop withdrawal.

A significant number of South Koreans, possibly a majority want the US troops withdrawn from their country. The president of South Korea, the opposite of the warlord president who brought the decapitation drills and war, is of the camp to limit US deployments to South Korea. THAT is the real reality, the South Koreans want the US out of South Korea and the US Deep State media never tells it like it is.

It's time to end the US deployment to South Korea with a peace treaty ending the Korean War.

Added note, many in the media believe North Korea is this all powerful military machine, it is not. South Korea is more than able to defend itself without US involvement.

When I was a kid, I stood guard in incredible cold weather on the Imjin river. North Korean commandos would swim the frozen river at night, sometimes we found bodies in the morning, frozen in the ice.

The Tumen is in the north, it's the border river between Russia and North Korea. It has river traffic, and it has a border bridge for rail and road from Russia. It runs to the sea from higher elevation. On the other side of the higher elevation mountains starts the Yalu river of Korean War fame. The main border with China. I haven't been to either.

The Imjin river would be considered a geographical obstacle used for defense positions on the DMZ.

The peaceful reunification of the Korean people had been blocked by China, Russia and Japan, it was a strategic buffer for these nations. For China and Russia, North Korea is a buffer preventing the Americans from being on their border. The Japanese considered Korea a land bridge for invasion of Japan by the Chinese and the Russians, thus, they too favored a divided Korea. It was a stalemate, the Deep State, China, Russia and Japan all had their reasons for keeping the Koreans at war.

Today, China wants to keep the China US trade an operational paradigm to build up their economy and military, and also, besides appeasing Trump on trade, the Chinese want the US out of Asia. For the Russians, it's the natural gas pipeline through North Korea to South Korea and Japan. And for the Japanese, they're under duress from missiles being launched over their heads.

And most of all Trump, who lives by deals. We needed a deal and the Deep State is being shut down when the deal moves to the withdrawal of US troops from South Korea. Many in the Deep State have used the Korea issue for expanded power over the people. It's another excuse for greater and greater defense expenditure, the Deep State doesn't like a conflict zone under their control to be taken from them.

The Deep State media blows North Korea up into this huge monster when the South Koreans are more than able to defend themselves. It's also, nostalgia, the US military has been in South Korea for generations. It's connected with the history of the military and one of it's main deployment zones. It's difficult for the Deep State, those who's families have spent generations going to Korea, in some sacred duty of honor and all that, they can't let go.(generals have sons who are generals, colonels have sons who are colonels, it's a generational family clan of Deep State warriors, a warrior class, and now it's a mercenary warrior class working not for America, but elite interest) So it's all a cultural shock to the Deep State to let go of Korea. This is a danger Trump must stand up to and on the North Korean side Kim has removed three old generals to make way for the change.

Peace in Korea is a huge cultural shock that must be overcome.

Kim was repeatedly publicly "summoned" to China before the meeting. Trump has been repeatedly meeting with Xi. It's obvious China is mediating.

China told Kim to quash it before the USA finishes putting a battery of missile launchers, then troops, near China's border, under the false pretense of defending against North Korea.

Russia is facing the same problem- missile launchers and troops at their border under the false pretense of Iran being an aggressive threat.

Missile launchers that can very quickly be changed from defensive to offensive.

Putin has been warning about this for years.

The psychopathic elites are constructing a first strike nuclear capability against China and Russia.

North Korea and Iran have similarities but the biggest deterrent to our Western resource-plundering, warmongering establishment is the fact that Iran is allied with Russia and the fact that if NATO got bogged down in a major land war in that nation it would probably be slaughtered. Iran has a well-equipped active military service of over a half million and is further backed up by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard with a further 125,000 soldiers. Also, it would likely polarize Muslims across the Sunni-Shia divide more against the West, which of course the Zionist who thrive on unrest and division would love.

This article about to pervasiveness of MSM Western establishment propaganda shows again how they constantly brian wash to people with their lies. When NK "tested" their missiles together with direct provocations against the US, either they were insane or things were contrived. The leaders of NK may be oppressive but they are not insane. Whether NK is coming in from the cold through the engineering of its former Russian alles, China, or the CIA, or just by itself, it no longer matters. Although China, Russia, and the US will benefit, this agreement between the US and NK is a very important development in the direction of peace and prosperity especially for the people of North Korea, and that is all that should matter.

It has been understood for a decade or more that Iran has likely bought a few sets of tactical nuke missiles from Pakistan. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

The fear is that they will be used in a last ditch effort to take out Tel Aviv or as an EMP strike against the "Great Satan." The US military must take this threat seriously too. The US built the ABM system currently operational along the northeastern seaboard only a few years ago.

Joel Skousen consistently asserts that the NWO plan is to use North Korea to initiate WWIII, with the end result of the USA absorbing a combined first strike from China/Russia, then using that as leverage to force a world gov't upon the West

Of course, Skousen also believe mass murderers are not hoaxed & that they're possessed by demons, so.....

A sensible and realistic comment.  China would never accept a NK dominated by the ZWO.  Why does the ZWO want nuclear missiles on Russia and China's border when they have hundreds of ICBM's.  Milliseconds count if the ZWO should opt for a first strike.  China wants these missiles out the peninsula and so does Russia.  Russia already has NATO, in violation of the agreements with Gorbachev, on its front door step with the crazy Baltics next to St. Petersburg.  Their economies sucks though since they joined the EU, and the population is fleeing them like Libyans.  Soon there will be more NATO troops (read US grunts) in the Baltics than civilians.  Anyway, Russia has no need for more ZWO bases on its eastern, Siberian border.

It's obvious that the "denuclearization" of the peninsula will apply to the USA as well as NK, at least as far as land based missiles, and possibly warships in the SK harbors, but this is being kept under the table as Trump realizes that AIPAC would go bonkers and pull out all its pedo videos.

" Something radical changed in Kim's world."

Exactly.  Why is something considered impossible for decades suddenly happening?

There are many possible explanations.  Qanon states the following:  NK was essentially a deep state black site used to extort money from the US taxpayer and justify massive military expenditures by keeping the threat of nuclear war alive.  Kim was a deep state puppet and not actually in control.  He was allowed to be the "leader" of NK as long as he followed orders.  The puppet masters (rogue CIA aka Clowns) were removed and Kim is now protected by Trump.  Calling off the meeting was just a publicity stunt.  The agreement has been made since March 8 and what we are seeing now is just the script being acted out and used by Trump to build more domestic support.

Its certainly Plausible given what we have learned from the Public Statements made by the Ex-Obama intelligence appointees on CNN.  N.Korea launches a missile and then new weapons must be bought to protect themselves from the threat.  Also Libya is a prime example of how the Clowns (Deep State CIA) don't give a crap about the well-being of the people in those nations we "bring freedom" to.
