21 Dead, 2,000 Infected: E-Coli Infection Swamps German Hospitals

Tyler Durden's picture

Even as the insolvent EU scolded Russia for daring to ban imports of raw vegetables from EU countries 3 days ago releasing the following statement, "The European Commission protested to the Russian Federation this
afternoon against the Russian ban imposed earlier today on all EU
vegetable exports to Russia, and requested the immediate withdrawal of
the measure" there is no chance that Russia will comply (adding insult to insolvency), following the latest report from Reuters that "German hospitals are struggling to cope with the flood of E.coli victims, Health Minister Daniel Bahr said on Sunday, as the death toll rose to 21 with more than 2,000 people infected across Europe....Hospitals in the northern port of Hamburg,
epicenter of the outbreak that began three weeks ago, have been moving
out patients with less serious illnesses to handle the surge of people
stricken by a rare, highly toxic strain of the bacteria.
" Needless to say, this is good news for the Keynesians out there: in addition to earthquakes, volcanoes, rain, snow, floods, droughts, tsunamis and nuclear power plant explosions, worthless economists will now have viruses to blame for "one-time, non-recurring" misses to their latest set of expectations.

From Reuters:

"We're facing a tense situation with patient care," Bahr told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday. He added hospitals outside Hamburg could be used to make up for "insufficient capacity" in Germany's second largest city.

At a news conference with Bahr in Hamburg, state health minister Cornelia Pruefer-Storcks said local officials were scrambling to relieve a looming shortage of doctors.

"We want to discuss with doctors about whether those who recently retired can be reactivated," she said, adding that medical staff in Hamburg was battling exhaustion.

Bahr later told N-TV network: "Those hospitals with enough capacity are supporting those that don't have enough capacity. That's the way we're getting control of the situation."

Authorities in Germany are racing to track down the source of the pathogen, which has infected people in 12 countries -- all of whom had been traveling in northern Germany.

Reinhard Burger, president of the Robert Koch Institute, the German center for disease control, said on Sunday the death toll had risen to 21.

Officials believe people were made ill by eating lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers or other raw salad vegetables in Germany. Scientists suspect the source of the contamination may have been poor hygiene at a farm, in transit, or in a shop or food outlet.

Many of those infected have developed haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a potentially deadly complication attacking the kidneys.

The grissly details:

The rare strain of E.coli has the ability to
stick to intestinal walls where it pumps out toxins, sometimes causing
severe bloody diarrhoea and kidney problems. Some patients have needed
intensive care, including dialysis. It has hit women more than men, and
most of those who have died were elderly.

The resulting complete avoidance of salads may be good news for the stock of wienerschnitzel, wurst and spatzle makers. Also, a good time to short vegetarians:

Officials had identified a restaurant in the northern port city of Luebeck as a possible place where the bug had been passed to humans after at least 17 people infected with E.coli had eaten there and one later died from complications.

The proprietor of the German meat-and-potatoes restaurant told Reuters his kitchen tested negative for the deadly E.coli strain and none of his staff had fallen ill.

People in Hamburg were steering clear of salads.

"I'm a vegetarian, so it hits me especially hard," said taxi driver Wolfgang Roenisch. "I've stopped eating cucumbers, tomatoes and salad."

In other news, expect the "Hamburg Cell" to get a whole lot more press coverage in 5....4....3...

Interesting that we have to wait for Mr. Putin to stand up and talk like a man! The west has a collection of cowardly clowns for politicians. Putin nailed it , he will not let Russians die in order to feed the spirt of the WTO, which Russia is being excluded from.

Vlad told the EU to "piss off" and more nations should too!

Your stomach rots and you are not allowed water as you die.

Your bowels rot and you become so thirsty you will give everything for a drop of water but the doctors will not allow you anything liquid. So you die only wanting to quench your thirst.

Please enjoy your police state.

US Military--CIA Engineered E-Coli
This E-Coli strain didn't just come out of nowhere...

80% organic base of common strains, 20% genetically engineered (hence sticking to intestine walls and other super toxic traits)...

Just like the genetically engineered flu virus that "appeared" out of nowhere... But US Pharmaceuticals had the "vaccine" for it at a $40 Billion cost to US taxpayers...

Part of the Anglo-Amerikan ruling elite, Wall Street/City of London destabilization program to try and export USD collapse to the Euro zone...

germans seem to have a pretty solid response so far - effective, fast, honest.  they deserve credit for that i think.  my sympathy obviously with those affected, it sounds quite unpleasant.

scale/severity look about similar to bird/swine flu with the same hyped press [...and yes likely needless overstock pharma to follow].  does not appear to be much conspiracy story supported in developments so far [just my view].  the press hype does make a nice distraction against global economic problems and developing wars in mid east / central asia.  and whatever the cia/fbi/hacker thing is.  ok so buy equities this week? dow 20k

Spraying raw human excrement on vegetables is not allowed in the usa, but is apparently "organic" in europe.

And they are concerned with american food laws!

That is true. But spraying human waste on fam fields is legal....esp for beef raised on pasture. You have heard of grass fed beef? Guess what....its grass AND sludge raised beef. Now go look up mrsa+beef. We got our own problems w/ sewage slude in usa too.

OK, a spot of British humor,

I was rushed to hospital this weekend with severe poisoning from a cucumber.
"Jesus Christ is it e. coli?" I shouted.
"Not exactly," the doctor replied, "part of the bloody thing's broken off inside your bung and's rotting your lower intestine"

That didn't catch a glimpse of funny.  Ironic you should have Zippy as your avatar - I literally have read that comic about 200 or so times in the hopes of finding a single one funny, but I am zero for 200.  Further, I have never even understood why anybody would find it funny, which is unlike Peanuts, which, while I think it is insipid, I understand why others might like it.  I guess it's like the Big Lebowski - I'll have to put it in the "don't understand how or why folks find this shit funny."

Having worked in emergency rooms when publicized issues such as this come out i can virtually guarantee you 80 percent of the people that show up had some non specific diarrhea and stomach cramps and just freaked out.

They probably have to hospitalize many of them because any tests will take a couple of days even if expedited.

These hysterias are funny to watch.

Ignorance breeds fear.

Costly beyond reason as well when you consider 1000 dollars per day stay in addition to anything up to and including a 16,000 dollar MRI ride.

People are weak, they run to the ER with sniffles while the car wreck victim bleeds out and the staff works hard to save.

I have had more than my fair share of boiling bowels while trucking. I always stuck some Imodium liqud or kaeopectate down my throat and kept on trucking no matter how stinky and messy it got. That is what the hose is for at the fuel pump (Water, spray off the interior)

There was one time my body would not function for two days.

I barely made it home in time for the Appendix to be removed hours before it burst. I am glad I I got it done.

People are so god damned ignorant about basic biology.

E. coli occurs naturally in everybody's gut - it's an enterobacter, which is crazy hard code meaning "bacteria that lives in your gut".  When you get a "bad" strain of E. coli, it can do funky things, like cause diarhea and such.  In really bad strains, it can kill you by screwing up your digestive system.

But ask this: of the 20 dead people, how many were already compromised?  Old? Infirm?  HIV? Drug users?  Cancer victims?

Were they all constitutionally sound 20 somethings?

I didn't think so.

So the kill rate, at best, is 20/2000?  Which is 1 in a 100?  And only 2,000 people in a country of 80 million people have, maybe, got it?

About as worrisome as mad cow, for which there have been, count 'em, 2 cases ever reported in the U.S..

Sun, 06/05/2011 - 20:22 | 1342123 topcallingtroll
topcallingtroll's picture

It is less than 20/2000 because in most epidemics you only see the tip of the iceberg.

There are probably 50,000 or more throughout europe that were exposed and had minimal or no obvious symptoms.

Bottom line...european food standards scare me in regard to human excrement.

"This particular e.coli variation is a member of the O104 strain, and O104 strains are almost never (normally) resistant to antibiotics. In order for them to acquire this resistance, they must be repeatedly exposed to antibiotics in order to provide the "mutation pressure" that nudges them toward complete drug immunity."

i read somewhere else (maybe downthread) that it was found in sprouts growing aeroponically.   if so, then how did such a superstrain of bacteria find its way there?

trying to moderate my tinfoil intake, but umm is right.
