Al-Jazeera Confirms Iran Nuclear And Industrial Sites Crippled By Stuxnet, Time To Go Long Symantec?

Tyler Durden's picture

After last week's Stuxnet disclosures, it was only a matter of time before the viral sabotage was flushed into the open, with Iran confirming that it had been in fact attacked. As expected, Al-Jazeera has just confirmed that not only has Bushehr been infected, but so have numerous other industrial sites all over Iran. Yet despite the pervasive attack, "no damage or disruption of nuclear facilities has yet been reported, however." What is surprising is that Iran has made such a major media splash on the topic: one would assume that demonstrating such broad cyberdefensive weakness would not be in the country's favor...

More from Al-Jazeera:

Iran's nuclear agency is trying to combat a complex computer worm that has affected industrial sites throughout the country and is capable of taking over the control systems of power plants, Iranian media reports have said.

Experts from the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran met this week to discuss how to remove the malicious computer code, or worm, the semi-official Isna news agency reported on Friday.

Isna said the malware had spread throughout Iran, but did not name specific sites affected.

Foreign media reports have speculated the worm was aimed at disrupting Iran's first nuclear power plant, which is to go online in October in the southern port city of Bushehr.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Rik Ferguson, a senior security adviser at the computer security company Trend Micro, described the worm as "very sophisticated".

"It is designed both for information theft, looking for design documents and sending that information back to the controllers, and for disruptive purposes," he said.

"It can issue new commands or change commands used in manufacturing.

"It's difficult to say with any certainty who is behind it. There are multiple theories, and in all honesty, any of of them could be correct."

Perhaps now is a good time to buy some SYMC: after all, it will be somewhat difficult for Iran to go on an anti-virus program piracy raid mission with everyone focused on the country's troubles. And with Iran suddenly in dire need of legitimate virus protection to go with its extensive Win95-backed infrastructure, could the $12 billion anti-virus company suddenly be an LBO target for those who wish to capitalize on the sales surge of the Norton product suite?

I really hope this story is bullshit, because if it's not, then we've basically just invited them to do the same thing to us.  And if they've got any brains at all, they would unleash it on or financial systems.  Now that would be a real shit show.  And now that I think about it...probably not unlike the shit show we've all been witness to for some time now.

Someone built a 12 billion dollar company out of turning off the annoying "Your Computer is Unprotected" message.  Other than that the anti-virus software doesn't do much.

The arabic Al Jazeera site has commenters even more coherent and cosmopolitan than here.

In fact, Al Jazeera English is up with the BBC as the top two news sources. And, like the Beeb, is government-supported and thus not profit-seeking.

Meet Stuart Levey. He loves his work as he's a US Treasury Under-Secretary and the head of the "Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Unit". And what does Stu do? For the past 6-years he's worked on "designing and enforcing sanctions that hurt" Iran. "...They're having a dramatic impact, I think that ah the UN Security Council Resolution was underestimated. It was underestimated by Iran, and it was underestimated by many people in the International Community." Basically, he's a Jewish American, a Jew of one of the Tribes of Israel. He represents the current arch-enemy(s) of Iran, and he has banned "all financial services" (like loans, banking insurance) for Iran, if such services, "... could, and I underscore COULD, assist Iran's nuclear missile firms". From the guy's own mouth. One problem though Stuie, Iran doesn't have nuclear missiles because unlike Israel and the US, Iran does not have ANY nuclear weapons or nuclear missiles.

But don't let that fact stop you impoverishing a whole nation and creating financial havoc and mass suffering of innocents on false pretences, as that would spoil your self-righteous hypocritical a-moral international bastardry - and we can't have that now, can we Stu.

At what point is the US going to wake-up that Israel is simply using it and likely to incite a nuclear response in the US one day? Is everyone blind in Washington? Do you really think Israel will give a toss if 100,000 Americans are killed as a result of such behavior? Doesn't anyone know what conflict of interest means anymore?

If I were Iranian (I'm 6th-gen aussie anglo-bavarian-scott) and the US allowed a 'Jew' to do this to my country, on false pretences, no matter what it took, or how long, I'd want to teach the US a lesson it would not forget in 1-thousand years, much bigger than 9-11. I assure you you'd feel exactly the same if someone did to you, what you are doing to them. Think about it, what would you do? Because it's now just about too late to stop it, and there's a reasonably good chance this could go nuclear at some point. Just because some shitbag like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad rants some feckless crap at Israel, you don't go to war. Countries do not build nuclear weapons to attack the US (or you would be smoked already). They do it so the US will not attack them. They want security assurance, they do not want national-suicide.

Is that really so difficult to grasp? Israel only wants to stop Iran doing this because Israel does not want its local militia opponents having a free-hand to demand their own land back, under an proxy Iranian nuclear umbrella. Because then they would eventually have to actually have to do so on far less favorable terms. Frankly, I don't think either of these religious-state Govts is any better than the other. They both thoroughly disgust me. But it is very disappointing that the US is again supporting one of them. They're both beyond the pale. Iranians did not attack you on 9-11 any more than Iraqis did. If the US gets in between these two arsehole states and invites retaliation, THAT will be your new "greatest strategic blunder" ever.

You are being used. Let Israel defend their own indefensible actions and positions. Don't let them suck you in. The British helped the Jews enormously in WWI and during WWII, and what did the Jews do between 1945 and 1948? They made terrorist attacks on them, shot and bombed British soldiers. They'll do exactly the same to you when they've got everything they want from you, and you get in their way. Remember when they attacked your USN communications ship? They will not hesitate to attack your forces if you get in their way. Unless the US really needs to attack Iran yourself, irrespective of Israel getting in your ear - don't do it. They are not your friend, at least you know that already about Iran, up front. The Israelis are only different in that they are far less hot-headed, but infinitely more cut-throat and mercenary.

You're worried about Russian sleeper agents? Look around you, the US is literally full of Israeli sleepers in plain view.

Iran is running a Win95-based infrastructure? Do people realize what this means? They are running the easiest WinOS to attack. Oy vey.

And let me throw this out for speculation: perhaps it is the Chinese doing this. After all, if all the Siemens industrial control units are suspect, who are you going to turn to if you are Iran? The US, Japan and Germany won't sell to them anymore, but the Chinese love Iranian oil and are happy to oblige. Sounds like some big-yuan orders coming their way to replace all that nice German stuff.

Of course, this might be just a cover-up of Iranian incompetence: "Sorry, Ayatollah, the plant doesn't work...but it is because the Lesser and Greater Evils have sabotaged our holy mission!"

In your posting above you undercut your own argument time and time again. I won't quote it, it's there for all to see.

What it all boils down to is Israel is America's ally. We are not their stooge, they are not our client.

The motives of the Middle East antagonists is revealing. Israel is struggling for survival; the rulers of the encircling moslem states only care about not being assassinated by religious fanatics or expanding their power.

It's time all you 'even handed' types choose sides. People that stand in the middle in wars either get run over or are simply irrelevant as too gutless to acknowledge that existential threats to one nation affect all nations.

You protray Ahmadinejad as a funny little blustering fellow with no real agenda. Please refer to the career of Hitler. Why did we ignore his ranting? What was the result?

If the US chooses to pursue its foreign policy based on fear of retribution, we are finished.

But one thing is certain.

Israel will not be destroyed.

Sort of like the Cuba and JFK thing right? I and everyone else was threatened because a petty ego maniac in a suit with nuclear weapons got all pouty about another guy in a really crappy suit saying, "you attack us and we do the same to you, so you better think again yanky".

And for this the whole of human civilization is put on the table? … because you can?

Sorry buddy, I do not have to pick any side in any such idiotic madness.

I'm personally acutely aware of what strategic total war means, and that at some point it could happen, and of the need to position yourself accordingly. But that does not mean you make excuses to deliberately start it on a flimsy to non-existent basis ... you know, like the Iraq excuse.

And note that I said, "Unless the US really needs to attack Iran yourself, irrespective of Israel getting in your ear - don't do it."

I said, "Unless", and "Needs to attack Iran yourself" I'd hardly call that sitting on the fence, being gutless or failing to face facts, or ignoring other imperatives.

But basically, I do not believe for a second Israel is your friend, or will not act against you in time, but that is my opinion, and it’s very well developed and well founded, so not up for trivial negotiation. They are however, as you point out, your ally.

That's a view you need to pay attention to from an actual friend who would rather the US didn't blow its foot off, again, for next to no significant big-picture reason.

You must be kidding!!! That shit software can't even snag data mining cookies on my hard drive, let alone sophisticated counter intelligence computer worms.

Here's a thought - short the crap out of that dog. Anyone who has replaced it with "Security Essentials," the completely free program offered by MS, will realize that they have been needlessly paying for Shitmantic, the only effect of which is to utterly bog down the speed of their PC, whilst leaving them as exposed as a toe toucher in a prison shower.
