Alex Becomes First Named Tropical Storm Of Atlantic Hurricane Season

Tyler Durden's picture

Tropical Storm Alex has officially been promoted. According to the NHC, the cyclone, which is due to pass over the Yucatan Peninsula in 12-24 hours, and once in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to become a hurricane by the end of the forecast period. Trajectory projection maps are still inconclusive as to just how much of an impact the hurricane would have on BP clean up operations. The chart below provides a snapshot of the three major storms currently in both the Atlantic and Pacific, where both hurricanes Celia and Darby appear to be no major threat.

As for Alex, here is the latest update from the NHC:

TROPICAL STORM ALEX DISCUSSION NUMBER   4
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL   AL012010
1000 AM CDT SAT JUN 26 2010

SATELLITE IMAGES SHOW THAT ALEX IS A LARGE CYCLONE WITH AN EXTENSIVE AREA OF CLOUDINESS...NUMEROUS SQUALLS IN RAINBANDS...AND A WELL ESTABLISHED UPPER-LEVEL OUTFLOW IN ALL QUADRANTS. HOWEVER... A RECENT MICROWAVE IMAGE REVEAL THAT ALEX STILL HAS A POORLY ORGANIZED INNER CORE.  THE INITIAL INTENSITY OF 40 KNOTS IS BASED ON  3.0 AND 2.5 DVORAK T-NUMBERS FROM TABF AND SAB RESPECTIVELY...AND SURROUNDING SURFACE OBSERVATIONS.  AN AIR FORCE PLANE IS SCHEDULED TO INVESTIGATE ALEX LATER TODAY AND WILL PROVIDE A BETTER ESTIMATE OF THE INTENSITY. ALTHOUGH ALEX IS EMBEDDED WITHIN A FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR INTENSIFICATION...THE STRENGTHENING WILL BE LIMITED BY THE EFFECT OF LAND PRIMARILY AS THE CYCLONE CROSSES THE YUCATAN PENINSULA WITHIN 12 TO 24 HOURS. ONCE IN THE GULF OF MEXICO...IN A COUPLE OF DAYS...THE CYCLONE COULD GAIN SOME STRENGTH AND ALEX IS FORECAST TO BECOME BECOME A HURRICANE BY THE END OF THE FORECAST PERIOD. THE OFFICIAL INTENSITY FORECAST IS A BLEND OF BOTH THE LGEM AND DECAY SHIPS MODELS.

SINCE WE DO NOT HAVE A RELIABLE CENTER LOCATION...THE INITIAL MOTION CONTINUES TO BE UNCERTAIN. THE BEST ESTIMATE IS 290 DEGREES AT 9 KNOTS. ALEX IS CURRENTLY LOCATED ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF A SUBTROPICAL RIDGE EXTENDING WESTWARD FROM THE BAHAMAS ACROSS THE GULF OF MEXICO.  THIS RIDGE WILL KEEP ALEX MOVING ON THE SAME GENERAL WEST-NORTHWEST TRACK FOR THE NEXT 24 TO 48 HOURS. THEREAFTER...THE RIDGE IS FORECAST TO WEAKEN AND ALEX SHOULD DECREASE ITS FORWARD SPEED. HOWEVER...MOST OF THE GLOBAL MODELS SHOW THAT THE RIDGE WILL BE STRONG ENOUGH TO KEEP THE CYCLONE ON A GENERAL  WEST-NORTHWEST TRACK OVER THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. IN FACT...THE GFDL/HWRF PAIR WHICH PREVIOUSLY MOVED ALEX ON A MORE NORTHERLY COMPONENT ACROSS THE GULF HAVE SHIFTED SOUTHWARD AND ARE NOW SHOWING A MORE WESTERWARD TRACK LIKE MOST OF THE GLOBAL MODELS.

Let me share once again, as it is now beginning to happen, some things earlier posted over the last week:

June 26-28 Gulf coast/Florida region, thunderstorms deluges, tornadoes/waterspouts, followed by flooding later.  Tropical Storm forecast with 80% confidence. - Piers Corbyn (weatheraction)

Starting soon and over the remainder of this year the oil volcano will place pressures of irresistible magnitude on the populace forcing the relocation of tens of millions of Americans, creating chaos in America. Poison air and gas clouds will be visible even within the mainstream media.  - (halfpasthuman)

The currency crash/unemployment wave kicks off beginning June 28, with markets shaking quaking event.  The currency woes of July will build to a crisis point of insurmountable proportions by August 1, and the crushing economic reality will come shining through for all to see. This summer will be the absolute last peak in the markets structure, while this fall will be three months of vomiting. The summer debt explosions go to such heights as to create massive overwhelming hyper-inflation in Fall that sweeps across countries globally with such ferocity bringing down governments. Riots and mob unrest will become a regular news story as the currencies are shredded publicly and planetary panic to buy precious metals overwhelms the censors in the propaganda press. June 28 provides the flood word for the precious metals, as well as the floating away of silver from gold. New reorganized currencies will not gain support and will be laughed at when introduced. The metals, especially silver, will from June 28 onward express their own destiny separate from the currencies. - (halfpasthuman)

Finally, if the above doesn't aid you in seeing what is happening then what is described below may:

A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources is warning today that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with "total destruction".

Corexit 9500 molecules will be able to "phase transition" from their present liquid to a gaseous state allowing them to be absorbed into clouds and allowing their release as "toxic rain" upon all of Eastern North America contaminating water & food supply etc... Excerpt: A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources is warning today that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with "total destruction". Russian scientists are basing their apocalyptic destruction assessment due to BP's use of millions of gallons of the chemical dispersal agent known as Corexit 9500 which is being pumped directly into the leak of this wellhead over a mile under the Gulf of Mexico waters and designed, this report says, to keep hidden from the American public the full, and tragic, extent of this leak that is now estimated to be over 2.9 million gallons a day. Scientists Warn Gulf Of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured "Beyond Repair" Scientists Warn Gulf Of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured "Beyond Repair" By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers A dire report circulating in the Kremlin today that was prepared for Prime Minister Putin by Anatoly Sagalevich of Russia's Shirshov Institute of Oceanology warns that the Gulf of Mexico sea floor has been fractured "beyond all repair" and our World should begin preparing for an ecological disaster "beyond comprehension" unless "extraordinary measures" are undertaken to stop the massive flow of oil into our Planet's eleventh largest body of water. Most important to note about Sagalevich's warning is that he and his fellow scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences are the only human beings to have actually been to the Gulf of Mexico oil leak site after their being called to the disaster scene by British oil giant BP shortly after the April 22nd sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform. BP's calling on Sagalevich after this catastrophe began is due to his being the holder of the World's record for the deepest freshwater dive and his expertise with Russia's two Deep Submergence Vehicles MIR 1 and MIR 2 [photo 2nd left] which are able to take their crews to the depth of 6,000 meters (19,685 ft). According to Sagalevich's report, the oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico is not just coming from the 22 inch well bore site being shown on American television, but from at least 18 other sites on the "fractured seafloor" with the largest being nearly 11 kilometers (7 miles) from where the Deepwater Horizon sank and is spewing into these precious waters an estimated 2 million gallons of oil a day. Interesting to note in this report is Sagalevich stating that he and the other Russian scientists were required by the United States to sign documents forbidding them to report their findings to either the American public or media, and which they had to do in order to legally operate in US territorial waters. However, Sagalevich says that he and the other scientists gave nearly hourly updates to both US government and BP officials about what they were seeing on the sea floor, including the US Senator from their State of Florida Bill Nelson who after one such briefing stated to the MSNBC news service "Andrea we're looking into something new right now, that there's reports of oil that's seeping up from the seabed... which would indicate, if that's true, that the well casing itself is actually pierced... underneath the seabed. So, you know, the problems could be just enormous with what we're facing." Though not directly stated in Sagalevich's report, Russian scientists findings on the true state of the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster are beyond doubt being leaked to his longtime friend, and former US President George W. Bush's top energy advisor Matthew Simmons, who US media reports state has openly said: "Matthew Simmons is sticking by his story that there's another giant leak in the Gulf of Mexico blowing massive amounts of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. On CNBC's Fast Money, he says he'd be surprised if BP lasted this summer, saying this is disaster is entirely BP's fault."

Corexit 9500 is a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by the Nalco of Naperville, Illinois. Corexit is is four times more toxic than oil (oil is toxic at 11 ppm (parts per million), Corexit 9500 at only 2.61ppm).

In a report written by Anita George-Ares and James R. Clark for Exxon Biomedical Sciences, Inc. titled "Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Three Corexit Products: An Overview" Corexit 9500 was found to be one of the most toxic dispersal agents ever developed.

According to the Clark and George-Ares report, Corexit mixed with the higher gulf coast water temperatures becomes even more toxic.

Please check out the MSDS for each substance.  These chemicals are all primarily detergents, not very different from what you use to wash clothes and dishes with.  The minor hydrocarbon additive is extremely small.  Propylene glycol is used in virtually all daily home use, and is approved by the FDA for ingestion.  This Corexit stuff is not going to harm you, even if it is dispersed in the atmosphere, which is inevitable.  It will be far less concentrated at that point.  You are already ingesting in your daily water far worse chemicals, including pharmaceuticals and weed killers.  If you care to take a look at the statistical analysis of your local water system, you may be rather amazed.

This is a paper tiger, comparatively.  The problems for this type of contamination were addressed long ago.  The real problem is the ongoing hydrocarbon volcano in the Gulf.

I have a kid matriculating at Tulane in August.  I am profoundly worried about the damned volcano.

Follow the money:

Corexit[1] is a product line of solvents primarily used as a dispersant for breaking up oil slicks. It is produced by Nalco Holding Company which is associated with BP and Exxon. - (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corexit)

Goldman Sachs is an owner of Nalco:

"USFilter and Ondeo Nalco enter into a strategic partnership providing equipment, chemicals and service to industrial customers.
The Blackstone Group, Apollo Management L. P. and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners buy Ondeo Nalco." - (http://www.nalco.com/aboutnalco/history.htm):

Corexit is toxic:

On May 19, 2010 the EPA gave BP 24 hours to choose less toxic alternatives to Corexit, selected from the list of EPA-approved dispersants on the National Contingency Plan Product Schedule,[8] and begin applying them within 72 hours of EPA approval of their choices, but BP refused to change from Corexit, citing safety and availability concerns with alternatives. -(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corexit)

Composition
The proprietary composition is not public, but the manufacturer's own safety data sheet on Corexit EC9527A says the main components are 2-butoxyethanol and a proprietary organic sulfonic acid salt with a small concentration of propylene glycol.[14][15] In response to public pressure, the EPA and Nalco released the list of the six ingredients in Corexit 9500, revealing constituents including sorbitan, butanedioic acid, and petroleum distillates.[3] Environmentalists also pressured Nalco to reveal to the public what concentrations of each chemical are in the product; Nalco considers that information to be a trade secret, but has shared it with the EPA.[16] Corexit EC9500A is mainly comprised of hydrotreated light petroleum distillates, propylene glycol and a proprietary organic sulfonic acid salt.[17] Propylene glycol is a chemical commonly used as a solvent or moisturizer in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, and is of relatively low toxicity. 2-Butoxyethanol is more hazardous, and has previously been identified as a causal agent in the health problems experienced by cleanup workers after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. An organic sulfonic acid salt is a synthetic chemical detergent, that acts as a surfactant to emulsify oil and allow its dispersion into water. The identity of the sulfonic acid salt used in both forms of Corexit was disclosed to the EPA in June 2010, as dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate.[18] -(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corexit)

Toxicity
The relative toxicity of Corexit and other dispersants are difficult to determine due to a scarcity of scientific data.[3] The manufacturer's safety data sheet states "No toxicity studies have been conducted on this product," and later concludes "The potential human hazard is: Low."[22] According to the manufacturer's website, workers applying Corexit should wear breathing protection and work in a ventilated area.[23] Compared with 12 other dispersants listed by the EPA, Corexit 9500 and 9527 are either similarly toxic or 10 to 20 times more toxic.[7]
Corexit 9527, considered by the EPA to be an acute health hazard, is stated by its manufacturer to be potentially harmful to red blood cells, the kidneys and the liver, and may irritate eyes and skin.[24][13] The chemical 2-butoxyethanol, found in Corexit 9527, was identified as having caused lasting health problems in workers involved in the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.[25] According to the Alaska Community Action on Toxics, the use of Corexit during the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused people "respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney and blood disorders".[15] Like 9527, 9500 can cause hemolysis (rupture of blood cells) and may also cause internal bleeding.[4]
According to the EPA, Corexit is more toxic than dispersants made by several competitors and less effective in handling southern Louisiana crude.[26] On May 20, 2010, the EPA ordered BP to look for less toxic alternatives to Corexit, and later ordered BP to stop spraying dispersants, but BP responded that it thought that Corexit was the best alternative and continued to spray it.[3]
Reportedly Corexit may be toxic to marine life and helps keep spilled oil submerged. There is concern that the quantities used in the Gulf will create 'unprecedented underwater damage to organisms.'[27] Nalco spokesman Charlie Pajor said that oil mixed with Corexit is "more toxic to marine life, but less toxic to life along the shore and animals at the surface" because the dispersant allows the oil to stay submerged below the surface of the water.[28] Corexit 9500 causes oil to form into small droplets in the water; fish may be harmed when they eat these droplets.[4] According to its Material safety data sheet, Corexit may also bioaccumulate, remaining in the flesh and building up over time.[29] Thus predators who eat smaller fish with the toxin in their systems may end up with much higher levels in their flesh.[4] -(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corexit)

notice the acceleration when it actually hits the gulf stream... i would imagine that a huge storm in the gulf would impact these projections, regardless of whether the storm goes through the main bulk of the spill.

further, as a hater and conspiracy theorist, i thought that obama's claim that currently unused skimmers should not go to the gulf to help the clean up effort was more foot dragging to pass cap and trade bullshit, but perhaps there was truth in what he was saying... notice how quick the spill goes around florida and up the east coast as soon as it hits the gulf stream.

Fish Gone Bad

I was in the supermarket today and saw that (according to the tabloids) Al Gore is a rapist.

Fuck dude, have you seen the Chinese reenactment?

I also saw the Enquirer headline Al Gore Sex Attack! at the supermarket but didn't look further. Maybe I should have because apparently a hotel masseuse has come forward to accuse Gore of "unwanted sexual contact" in 2006, and also of behaving like a "crazed sex poodle."

Now that's one thing I've never been called. No wonder Tipper wanted out. (I'm trying not to visualize.)

I can't get out of my mind the veteran charter captain who signed up for the BP 'cleanup fleet.' When he got out there and saw the extent of the damage compared to what was being done about it, he returned to dock, dismissed his crew of two, and put a bullet in his head. I can't comprehend doing that to his wife and children, but his act made all this real to me in a way numbers and theories never could.

Check out this link if it is still there. The original was deleted from youtube, but Michael Panzner of Financial Armageddon restored it.

It seems BP let a fisherman's wife go behind the scenes and observe their safety operations first hand. Possibly they thought she would be too clueless and overwhelmed to take in what she saw and heard. If so, they made a big mistake with Kindra Arnesen who is observant, intelligent and articulate. Listen to her story.

(If BP has got another stooge to file a copyright infringement claim with youtube, check Panzner's site. He may have a new link.)

...."A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources is warning today that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with "total destruction"."...

Hmm.  Seeing as to how I'm in DC, I'd best gas up the car...

it if they did.

Didn't Lake Erie catch fire once.  If the plumes shoot up the east coast, would it not then lose some up the Potomic.  Zippo lighter, most problems solved.  Day of some continuing stupid joint session of Convicts.....I mean Congress.  Was I right the first time? So much to ponder.

For all I know this could all be true, but I'm getting skeptical about news from oilprice.com.

Not downplaying the scope of the BP disaster -- just the reliability of this particular source.
