I love this site. But I wonder if all the negativity is a little overblown. I mean the government, if you read your history, is always able to step in and fix things, even if the fix is short term. We are a nation of short term fixers. We are also a nation of idiots. Nobody thinks things will be worst next year. Nobody. Find one person you know who thinks that and I'll send them a nice care package. So the future is going to be worse: that's basically the thesis of this site. OK. So we'll all do with less. So the plan has yet to be worked out, you know, fixing the entitlements (Soc security, medicate, pensions, etc.). So the politicians are all corrupts and take a 2-year view. Can you imagine this government having a 5 year plan? Maybe the answer is to just step away from the keyboard and just let the idiots at GS run things up and down and keep your money in Treasuries at 4.5% (I do). There's no competition there, there's no running it up and down at 3:30p every day, there's no "event" trading because some Harvard linebacker (I mean mutual fund manager) says now is BY FAR the best time in history to buy stocks (the guys from Corestates--Greek guy, probably a pederast). Maybe this whole site is really an amateur "I-wish-I-were-Jim-Chanos" with all the hot hookers at my parties, and there's just too much envy. Maybe people on this site are just regular, decent people who think things should be "fair." Well, sorry folks, but look at the Phibro guy (Hall)--you don't think he's Lord V (he is)? Christ, the guy would kill his children for an extra few points. Not that i think everyone should be a Buddhist and meditate all day and read books with positive thoughts, but is there an awful a lot of brainpower wasted on this sites. Go make something people, donate a hundred bucks to a neighbor who lost his job. Stop whining.

"if you read your history, is always able to step in and fix things,"

That is because you are reading from a very short history. US is too much of a new country to have much of a history. Now if you read the old countries history you will see that all of them eventually get so undermined by corruption and decay that they can no longer create short term cosmetic fixes. I think the hope is that ZH (and other blogs) educates the public so real fixes can be created. Personally, I like the thing about dying or blowing things up :). They sure like their movies at ZH too. So congratulation for a job well done to ZH I hope you guys can keep it going.

Hi Cheeky,

I think some of the posters here are using a bizarre form of gibberish--the words are readable but honestly, there is no point to what was said and when you finish reading it,  you  feel duped.  Since Tyler and the crew probably have accrued a few enemies in high places, it wouldn't be far fetched to imagine a few of these people posting on ZH just to muck up the conversations...OH WELL, but that is why it is nice to get to know people's monikers--saves me a little frustration from the gibberish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke5Mr5eCF2U

PS, the gibberish thing has gotten so bad, unless an anonymous post makes sense while i am reading, i just stop, and think, " oh it is an anonymous poster, posing as a real poster --but i am not falling for it"  Wish there were calculus questions for CAPCHA anonymous posts, so as to encourage registration.

AND, please, no offense to so many of you anonymous out there!!! Just wish the gibbering posters would be screened out somehow.

Actually I think it will be worse next year.
And the year after for that matter.
I hope it will not be, but think it will.

BTW, I have been on unemployment since Jamuary 3, 2009. My wife was alos unemployed for over six months, only recently lucked into a job. And that is what it takes these days, LUCK, pure and simple.

And congratulations to your site for the award Tyler. I am not an economist, nor have I ever done any work thus related. But I have a real hard-on to learn about it, since last July or so. Your site is one of the best.

Yeah, OP is right, the government is always able to fix things. . . you guys are way too negative.  A positive attitude goes a long way towards helping the fixing.

Take for example the Western Roman Empire.  Things were working out great after Nero -- then through Romulus Agustus in 476 A.D. . . people were burying gold and silver coins in the ground -- that's how fantastic the government's response was.  In fact, the Western Roman Empire fixed things so well, we now refer to the period in Europe following this development as the DARK AGES.

i think you jumped a about a thousand years forward to go from 476 to post Plague years.  I think i understand your point; you're saying that in about 1000 years we'll be awakening from this financial mayhem.  That's about when i thought this thing would get figured out too.

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 23:49 | 25298 Project Mayhem
Project Mayhem's picture

If I had a point -- it is probably to repeat the claim of Dr. Antal Fekete -- that the Western Roman Empire collapsed because of currency debasement, while the Eastern Roman Empire continued for another 1000 years (to the fall of Constantinople) because the latter did not debase their currency.

First.  What government are you refering to?  Government in general fail ALL the time (need I really give examples?).  The US has had a lucky 230 years, but no government is perfect....  That said, the collapse fears are largely overblown, it is just a possibility, not a certainty.   The main safeguard against this is that everyone has an interest in some form or organized government continuing.

being a person of the far left (read: certainly not a democrat) i'm seeing a cross pollination of ideas i like here.

To see zero hedge post warren pollack's piece which suggest reading Mao's biography is a good thing is encouraging he's not afraid to state an idea has merit regardless of its source. I also see some of the same from max keiser who shows working class sympathies.

Since we of the left have been at this awhile, and admitting I don't know squat about what you folks here do for a living, i welcome you to the resistance. C'mon in the water is fine.

anyway, tyler durden and zero hedge get an honorable mention counterpunch. its on the front page now.

Isn't Anyone Watching the Fed?
Bernanke's Shell Game
By MIKE WHITNEY

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is a man who knows how Washington works and uses that knowledge to great effect. His appearences on Capital Hill are always worth watching. He sits politely with his hands folded in front of him playing the bashful professor while one one preening congressman after another makes a fool out of himself. In contrast, Bernanke looks modest and thoughtful, faithfully upholding the public's trust. But things aren't always as they seem. The Fed chief is sticking it to the American people big-time and no one seems to have any idea of what's really going on. Former hedge fund manager Andy Kessler sums it up in a recent Wall Street Journal article, "The Bernanke Market". Here's a clip:

"By buying U.S. Treasuries and mortgages to increase the monetary base by $1 trillion, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke didn't put money directly into the stock market but he didn't have to. With nowhere else to go, except maybe commodities, inflows into the stock market have been on a tear. Stock and bond funds saw net inflows of close to $150 billion since January. The dollars he cranked out didn't go into the hard economy, but instead into tradable assets. In other words, Ben Bernanke has been the market."

What does it mean? ...Over at Zero Hedge, Tyler Durden did the math and figured that the recent 45 per cent surge in the S&P 500 had nothing to do with the fictional economic "recovery", but was just more of the Fed's hanky panky. Durden noticed that the money that's been sluicing into stocks hasn't (correspondingly) depleted the money markets. That's the clue that led him to the truth about Bernanke's 6 month stock rally.

Zero Hedge: "Most interesting is the correlation between Money Market totals and the listed stock value since the March lows: a $2.7 trillion move in equities was accompanied by a less than $400 billion reduction in Money Market accounts!

Have to reply...as a hard 60's radical who spent summers in Chicago's west side, who read the 'little red book' like the bible, who wanted to change and worked and sacrificed to change the system, I find it aweful where we are now. Rather than bringing freedom i saw the left bring tyranny, rather than emancipation and empowerment it brought subjugation, rather than ideas it brought  sloppy slogans and drugs, rather than revolution it brought continued immaturity, rather than hope for change it brought superficial programs.

Resistance to what? The big bad system? Well, bro it has not a shred of clothes.

Resistance to what? The big bad corporations? They are paper tigers.

Resistance to what? The federal reserve? Get it audited.

Resistance to what? The vast right wing conspiracy? The vast left wing conspiracy? Offer a realistic innovation(s).

It is very comfortable being alienated.

James Braddock heavy weight champ, 1935, said it well, i paraphrase....I have to believe that I have a say in my life. This is all we need to get done. More citizens to think this way. Pay back what they take rather than expect more and more and more.....

It has been a while since I have talked to the 'left' without feeling personally offended for having different beliefs. Perhaps in the end the left and right will simply all be the disenfranchised jobless taxpayer at which point we will realize that the politicians all have to go. If 60% of this country's folks could agree on anything at all we would be able to move mountains. Certainly we could clear out every last fucker in the government.

right and left are just terms to sterotype with. not really all that relevant. warren pollock doesn't have any problem reading Mao and taking what he perceives as value and blending his own philosophy. we should do the same. i try to. i read this site and others like it.

a whole lot of the lefties voted for ron paul in the primaries. me i voted for mike huckabee who ran commercials in michigan that said something like who do you want for president: a guy who looks like one you work with or a guy who looks like the who laid you off. despite all huckabees positions of huckabee i dont agree with the obvious knock on wall street was too temting to pass up. so we are in this together with a lot of different perspective. we can fight about the future when it gets here. the obvious task is in the present.

right the system has no clothes and doesn't give a damn. they now tell you there gonna screw you even before they do and dare you to do something about. you know, like that 700 billion bailout that passed in broad daylight with calls to reps running 100 to one against.

yea corporationas are paper tigers allright. they've shipped every manufacturing job in the country out right under your nose. maybe you were to busy day trading to see it. or maybe you were making money on those stock increases from the rising productivity numbers.

get the fed audited. all right do it. but why do you think that legislation got only ten signatures on it. It aint gonna happen.

I wonder whether would that happen without existence of this blog and the whole blogosphere in general.

the Main street seems doesn't care about what's really going on in the world of money. people are happy to get their paychecks or unemployment insurances, and that's it.
in the meantime GS et al keep profiting from simply ruining this country.

congrats tyler. great job. but, to be honest, i am concerned with the comment that your "ultimate goal is to make zero hedge a self sustaining source of unbiased information." concerns lie in the worry that this is a buzz word for a subscription site. if so, i have no problems with someone making a living, especially providing provocative, cutting edge commentary. but, i fear that if you migrate to a subscriber model, the need to "justify the dues" may interfere with the fiercely independent, contra-system site you have spent so much time/energy building up. cheers.

I'm an outcast from the mortgage implosion, from the inside-out view, and this is by far the most informative (over my head, I'm learning alot) first read of my day, and I started picking him off Implode-O-Meter.  As the flow of info off the net can be overwhelming and you have to source your source and then source his source, you better find out where you get your info and can it be trusted.  This is the most sourced and trusted site I could send someone needing info financially.  Contributors are excellent, comments are great exposure to different viewpoints (to say the least), and it inspires to contribute and keep learning ways to change things for the better.

Congrats TEAM ZEROHEDGE, YOU DESERVE IT!  As for the rest of ya, shut the hell up!  If you don't have something to contribute, MOVE ON!  (love ya!)

Zero Hedge has show us what the mainstream media really is about.

Main stream media's main message over and over:

"Don't look too closely at the data or what Wall Street is up to because things are looking up, not out of the woods yet, but plunge in guys with your cash"

The subtext

"save our skin guys - we are scared shitless but hope if enough suckers jump in we can ride it out on your money. If you lose, so what - we don't care - you are what we feed on"

I refuse to accept the premise that Americans as a people are stupid sheeple.  Where some see masses of morons, I see people focusing on surviving in this kleptocracy and tuning out the bullshit that pervades our lives.

What the condescending oligarchs miss is that people will tune in to good information, even if it goes over their heads.  And people care.  This is evidenced by our leaders facing tougher questions from folk in town halls than they do from their regulators, or congressional overseers.

When asked to justify their actions, our leaders main refrain has been "its complicated."  Endless thanks to ZH for proving them wrong and empowering us with information.

Now all you need to do is have a strict policing of the comments page.  Seriously - the more popular this site becomes, the more you attract these sycophant weirdos who clearly would be much more at home on either on the Drudge Report or on the Daily Kos.  One of the best things about this site was never really knowing where you stood politically.  I didn't want to know.  I still don't.  But you now have, in equally annoying measures, both Leftist-Moonbat, Greatful Dead-listening, Acid casualties who swear you're on the same page as them, as well as tinfoil hat-wearing, Obama-isn't a US citizen-believing, right-wing brownshirts who also believe you and they are intellectually aligned.  And they are both abusing the comments section of each article you post to advance their ridiculous views; trying to run their own blog vicariously through yours.

Remember the good old days when the comments section consisted of about 10-12 people discussing the day's credit/stock/treasuries action in-depth?  With incredibly insightful posts about the strange abnormal occurrences that we now basically take for granted in this shell game they call the stock market?  The comments section used to be almost as informative and entertaining as the articles themselves.

Now you have basically 3 different types of posters - 1) Someone kissing your ass to the point of embarrassment, but not even pretending to know what the fuck VWAP is, 2) Some who sounds like they hump a Sean Hannity blow-up doll at night, ranting & raging against that Socialist/Fascist/Enemy of the People Obama (along with not-so-subtle stabs at that "Jew" Bernanke , or 3) Someone inviting you to a Phish re-union concert so you can get together and "fight the man", man.

I'm starting to think you might need to just do away with the comments section altogether, lest your enemies have more ammo to paint you as some conspiracy theory pushing lunatic.

You lie down with dogs, you get fleas.

The comments allow for expression and participation under a broad tent.  To quote the interview "In this sense, Fight Club represents nothing less than the growing disenchantment with a highly leveraged consumer culture, a financial system that merely redistributes wealth from the middle class to Wall Street, and a crony political system which never changes its substance. However, in order to succeed in real change, the truth about the reality behind the scenes has to be exposed."

Alas, the crony political system is connected to and is in fact an arm of the International Financiers - bought and paid for.

By attempting to steer Tyler, you yourself are "abusing the comments section of each article you post to advance your "ridiculous" views; trying to run your own blog vicariously through Zerohedge".  To quote Fightclub, "Stop trying to control everything and just let go! LET GO!"

Do away with the comment section huh?   What a foolish idea.

Vicelord i respect your view, and somewhat have the same thing on my mind, but you can not push your own agenda just because you don't like something, or that you like something like it was etc, and, if you can, please understand not all have the same cognitive capabilities, but that does not disqualify them from entering a discussion ... and you are doing the same thing you so loudly speak against of ...you run your own personal blog under the comment section and, as i said before, you make no real contribution to the discussion except with you constant rant about how stupid people should not even dare to have Internet or have a right to read some exquisite information provided by this site. you have many specialized forums all over the Internet, and they will serve your purpose. but if you wish to contribute to this blog and its goal, please sustain yourself from insulting the readership of this blog just because you have some overstated view about your intelligence and knowledge about something that has become both insignificant and irrelevant ( the market ) and finally, you need to understand that your surroundings does not need to adapt to your needs,  but your needs need to adapt to your surroundings. and if you do not like that, then you can go somewhere else where your general view is both excepted and shared ...

You know, I don't disagree with you.  Except to say that I'm not in any way trying to advance any "overstated view about (my) own intelligence."  Or that I'm trying to put through any particular view of my own (the only thing I ever pounded the table about was trying to get Tyler to not even respond to anything CBNC had to say to or about him.)

I came to believe long ago that you can learn very valuable things even from stupid people.  I don't think for a second that I'm in any way smarter than anyone.  I know a thing or two about a thing or two, and that's about it.

I have just come to lament the sad state of affairs here on the comments section.  That's all.  I will shut up about it now.  It seems I am trying to fight back the tide.

Good day to you, sir.

You are spot on with this. I have seen this happen on pretty much every bearish economics blog once it becomes big time. CR, Naked Capitalism, now ZH all seem to descend into a cliquey nest of circle jerking and nonsense in their comments when at one point they were all on topic and in depth. Sadly, I don't even read the comments at those sites anymore, except for maybe a scan through on occasion. This site has become much of the same lately, and its only going to get much much worse.

As I am sure you are aware, your "case in point" comment was easily taken to mean that the poster in question was one of the bankers that should have been killed in the 9/11 attacks. That is over the top. And if you have been misinterpreted, your tone and manner facilitated that mistake. You might consider moderating it as a result.

One can make a decision tree regarding the market, government intervention, being long or short, etc. All lines end at "You're Fucked", but the paths taken are different. The folks who are believers, as opposed to the infidels and apostates who pepper this site, are making some money in the short term, and enjoying their final moments of happiness, kind of like Nassim Taleb's turkey in Black Swan. It's November; we just don't know the day.

The shorts have been in a state of increasing misery since March, their cancers metasticizing in parts of the body they never knew they had, and many of them may opt to put their head on the chopping block before the third Thursday of the month. They not only know what's coming; they welcome it.

Other paths taken on this decision tree are traveled by the likes of REITs, lesser banks, homebuilders and automakers. For the moment their path is also bright and shining, and they certainly have the 'audacity of hope'. Sadly, they do not see the man with the hatchet sneaking up behind them. Their demise will be swift, and almost---but not quite---painless.

Finally, there is the path paved in gold, where its travelers do not walk, but are chaffeured in a black Rolls Royce Phantom V. The driver stops just short of the passengers' destination, where the final steps are taken on a reflecting pool. Yes, the Goldman Sachs folks walk the last mile on water.

In that reflection, however, perhaps unseen by those whose heads are held so high they never do anything so pedestrian as look down and self-reflect---except in a Narcissistic manner---they fail to see the mutants and zombies and former shorts and the rest of the great undead fast approaching with pitchforks and torches and the means to erect a hundred guillotines just outside the hallowed halls of 85 Broad. The yin for their yang will be a demise filled with such pain and horror that their last moments will force them to question whether the rewards of their current but fleeting glory will have been worth the price.

Such is life. We all choose a path, only occasionally reminding ourselves that everything is temporary and is either meaningless (Buddhists and pessimists), or else of such short duration that we must grasp every ounce of beauty for its own sake (optimists). It's the Last Dance.

In the long run we're all just as dead.

I have also read all his articles many times, and i don't brag about that little fact as you do, and you think that you are entitled to something just because you were one of his first readers. And, incidentally, congratulations, dude.  I'm not surprised, at all.  You know, I post on Krugman's blog sometimes, and actually got a reply or two from him over time.  And one time I castigated him as a coward for not covering the topics being discussed by you.  And what I said was, "The man deserves a Pulitzer for his work."  (He didn't respond to that one.)

My point being is that you do a Pulitzer; I've thought so for a while now.  And I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility to think that one day you may in fact get one.  IF you don't lose sight of what it is that drove you to start this blog in the 1st place, instead of getting caught up in petty catfights with paid shills for GE.

  • This was freedom.  Losing all hope was freedom.  - This blog is liberty & freedom not hope.
  • I just don't want to die without a few scars. - Congratulations on a few worthy opponents frustrated at shadow punching the paper bag of anonymity.
  • If I could wake up in a different place, at a different time, could I wake up as a different person?   - surreal?
  • One minute was enough, Tyler said, a person had to work hard for it, but a minute of perfection was worth the effort.  A moment was the most you could ever expect from perfection. - Enjoy this moment of perfection and your accolades.
  • You're not how much money you've got in the bank.  You're not your job.  You're not your family, and you're not who you tell yourself.

    ... You're not your name.

    ... You're not your problems.

    ... You're not your age.

... You are not your hopes.  - You're not your blog or your awards as you know.

As in warfare, asymmetric information will always win over a large, slow, entrenched opponent.  Here's to winning, as I tip my champagne glass to you good sir.

Congrats - well deserved. I bet Denninger and several others are pissed. LOL. He'll be even more pissed after you take this award perpetually. No one else comes close. Maybe if they have a rant award I could win that. LOL

I doubt very seriously that Karl is pissed.

In reality, IMHO, he deserves this award as much as Zero Hedge does.

Reality: in order of where I start my day.

!. Market Ticker

2. Zero Hedge

3. Calculated Risk

4. Naked Capitalism

5. Mish

6. Weiss Research

7. Dr. Housing bubble

8. Layoff Daily

9. Financial Armageddon

10. The Automatic Earth

I have been reading all of these sites for some time. They all have their ups and downs. But I would not miss any of them. They all deserve awards.

But thats just me.

reading market ticker first, and taking it seriously, can be dangerous to your health.

Karl has actually appeared on CNBS.

I give that a big thumbs up!

He's fighting the same "green shoots" media

that TD is fighting.

The only reason I put MT first is I have been reading it longer that ZH. But then MT has been around for longer than ZH, so that would be expected.

The fact I put ZH second is a good thing.

Vicelord: I do not see you adding any value here, I see you cluttering up the board, and I see you trying to blow your own horn. In other words, you are the epitome of what you claim to abhor: a wannabe blowhard.
