Angry Student Protesters Storm Tory HQ In London

Tyler Durden's picture

Wonder why the EURUSD just dropped by over 120 pips in an hour? This may have something to do with it:

From CNN:

A group of protesters broke into the headquarters of Britain's governing Conservative party headquarters in London Wednesday and set off flares before being forced out of the building, CNN's Atika Shubert reported from the scene.

They went on to set fires outside the building, where police presence was "minimal," she said.

The violence came during a largely peaceful protest by students against government plans to allow universities to increase tuition fees. The National Union of Students said 40,000 demonstrators were on the streets.

And from the Telegraph:

A group barged into the lobby of Millbank Tower, near the headquarters of the Tory party, before being forced out by police and security officers. They then began setting fire to placards outside the entrance.

Windows in the office block were smashed and a number of smoke bombs thrown. Dozens of police surrounding the entrance were pelted with water bottles and jostled by the passing protestors.

Up to 50,000 people, many waving placards, are marching though the streets of London in the biggest show of opposition to the Coalition Government.

Fun and games starting everywhere.

...the elite will let them eat cake.-)

Likely.  That phrase, intended by Rousseau to illustrate the attitudes of the callous nobility, actually illustrates the folly of government price fixing.    Bakers at the time were compelled to sell plain bread (the urban food staple) at a certain low, formulaic price but they were also compelled to sell the fancy stuff (brioche actually) at that same low price in the event that they ran out of the cheap stuff.  Given these incentives the bakers didn't make much cheap stuff and instead tried to make a living selling product that actually had a margin in it.

Obviously it's an understatement to say that the French nobility and French society in general had other issues but when TSHTF things were exacerbated by the unintended consequences of elite central planning and entitlement granting.

Typical of Rousseau (all four of my kids are wards of the state but I just wrote a great book on the proper way to raise children!!)  he can't see the big picture - in this case the fact that this princess-attributed comment (which he likely made up) really demonstrates how the nobility stiffed the merchants who provide the good//service in question. [BTW check out the history of U.S. vaccine producers]

Anyway, there's a lot of that going around these days.  So...perhaps: "Let them eat a minimum 3.0 GPA" ??

Zerohedge does let itself down sometimes.

As if a few students protesting could affect EURUSD. The UK has its own currency remember?

It is however indicative of social mood changing across the world.

Is that a crashing stock market I hear?

education should be free(financed with taxes) for a couple of reasons.

1. young people studying at university is good for society.
goverment should absolutely do what it can to make sure at least half of young people go to university.

2. poor kids should not have to become debtslaves to be able to afford university. birth is a fucking lottery and we need to help those young people whose parents are poor.
a free quality education is the best way to do this.

Nothing is free. Someone must pay for it. "Free education" comes in two basic flavors.

1. Government Subsidized. That is when the government takes my money at gun point in order to pay for your child's five year long keg party.

2. Endowment Financed. This is where a wealthy person endows money to a University voluntarily to pay for your kid's five year long keg party.

I have a huge problem with you picking my pocket for your preferred charity. I will not be the forgotten man. Fuck you. If you believe in college education for all so strongly, endow your wealth to your alma matter. I hear they even name a building after you if you do. Go for it and leave my wallet alone.

well i believe that in order for society to work and a nation to be strong there needs to be a central goverment that is financed by taxes.

in my opinion providing free schooling is not a frivolous use of taxpayers money.

+1..the gooberment subsidies are the root of the whole problem. Just as in health-care, all the gooberment subsidies just inflate the shit out of the costs. As soon as that douche-bag Clinton took over, we saw prices skyrocket. I went to a great public university and it cost less then my Jesuit high school (under $3k/yr). When 99% of the students who apply for aid receive it, the price is raised for all (and then others on the cusp get priced out and have to apply for aid and so on and so on....). END GRANTS and AID and you will see prices decline drastically.

Btw, with the Internet, one can learn much more then in college - you lose the camaraderie and synergies of knowledge, but for a $200,000 savings, you can join a fucking book club or some other intellectual group. I would rather give my kids $$ to start their own business then waste $200k getting drunk and high.

Oh yeah, let's wage  war on desert peoples that don't give a fuck about us; let's pay out of all of our motherfucking pockets for that bullshit, but education costs too much?

fuck you, seriously.  No one deserves to be deprived of something as important as an education, fool.  You dumbasses spend more money firing 70,000 dollar fucking missiles at shacks, and an education costs too much?  You people disgust me.

You guys trash these kids, but they are actually protesting a symptom of the same fucked up corrupt system everyone at ZH rails on every day...they just don't realize it yet.  They are protesting the little sliver of the world their young minds know and understand.

They see a school system that is on the verge of bankruptcy and collapse. They see a system handed to them that requires that they cough up ever increasingly huge sums of money to get the same education the people before them received for much, much less.  The deeper question is how did it get that way?  My bet is bankster fraud and government incompetence & theft.  How about you???

If you are over 28, quit the fucking knee jerk and thinking like your parents did.  These are the kids that our government and banksters about to hand the biggest pile of dog-shit reality that has been seen since the Great Depressions.  It's up to us as adults recognize this and channel this anger at the right issues and people.

But seriously, tuition should not be allowed to fluctuate from the time you enter a program to the time you leave.  Is that so hard?

Perhaps a politician will formulate what tuition prices must be using a peg like minimum wages or the average earnings of a new graduate.

Better yet, abolish minimum wage, and let tuition be decided by the market by having students 'unionize' and negotiate a better price.

What I don't get is how easily snowed most people are about austerity.

Big government has raised taxes higher and higher to enable big business to steal more and more.  For awhile it could cover up that theft with promises like social security and subsidized eductation.  Now that the system is falling apart, they want to take those obligations away.

But not cut taxes or corproate welfare.  No, the ultra rich "leaders" who caused this collapse must never be even slightly inconvenienced.

Younger people see this.  They see they've been robbed to pay for benefits they'll never collect and being lectured at by morons and crooks with no right to judge them.  And they're reacting in about the only way they can.

Really, I can't believe people are so snowed as to paint these poor kids as the problem.

It's hard to take any protesters seriously when they all have the same shiny, mass-produced signs.

This place attracts some amazing perspectives.

I am flabbergasted at the idea that an education is just another part of a society that exists to make interest payments to creditors.  I mean, really.  6 billion hairless apes on the planet and some folks won't even admit to themselves that as a species we really kinda WANT to educate our children.

Distill down some of the posts here, and you realize just how crazy and stupid they are.

"We educate our youth so that loans can be given to the poor to provide interest payments to the rich."

Seems to me the idea is that if you can't personally profit from it, it's not worth doing.

Please don't breed.  It's a sucker's game.

lmao - now this is how to get your message across - and i don't mean the students - rather it's the subtle message from the police who allowed the protestors to storm Tory party hq and smash the place up (considering the location and that the protest was organised with the full knowledge of the police it's hard to believe they were caught off guard) - note to david cameron from the london met police force prior to the budget cuts - don't fuck with the people who keep you safe....expect the planned cuts in police funding to be reviewed once cameron is back from pimpin his ass to the chinese....

Watching the live feed, I caught that lesson as well: The Police were not passionately opposed to the protesters, to say the least.

And what's more, now that the Police have tasted the direct threats of cut-backs, even cancelling those will not change their sympathies.

As  several of the interviewed students said, it's too bad that violence is necessary to get peoples' attention, but it is what it is.

Hope they don't allow their momentum to be lost.

policing at this protest is in direct contrast to their response in April of this year, at the G20 London protests, which resulted in an innocent man's death at the hands of police. . .

of course, the G20 is serious business. . .

Is it just me?I'm just a little pissed off that the only people displaying any kind of anger at what is going on regards the economy/bailouts and the insane policies enacted by governments to deal with them are students protesting at an increase in their tuition fees!!!

In both Ireland and now London we have seen a mild form of what should have been hapening following the bank bailouts last year and in 2008.But to the average bloke in the street he is oblivious to it all.Ask him what The Federal Reserve is and he wouldn't have a clue,Bernanke? never heard of him, fiat currency/monetisation of government debts forget it.

Joe Bloggs hasn't got a clue and that is what the central banks and governments are relying on,price of wheat doubles in six months?bad crops/bad weather.Food prices up 15% in a year -yes but inflation is only 3% and these rises are only temporary,Unemployment is up but we are printing money to help create jobs,.

Think about all the people you come in contact with on a daily basis and ask yourself how many would be able to understand what is written on these pages?

I could go on,but I think they are getting away with as long as the people remain clueless.

I agree with teaser. The students are after something for nothing.

Was surprised with the hostile response he got .

Seems there are more socialists/commies on this great sight than i thought.

the students should be targeting the banks. Not the banks puppet government HQ.

Dont the dumb asses realize theres NO FREAKING MONEY LEFT!!!

The socialists have RUN OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES MONEY!!!

It s gone i tells ya, gone.

Think about it. The students are trying to force the government to steel more money of the private sector to give to them. Take all the fraudulent corrupt huge bankers bonuses and give it to the students and government workers, and it wouldnt make a dent in the shithole we are in.

Its as simple as this.......Too many westerners consume a hell of a lot more than they produce(talking state "workers" mainly).

There is not enough people producing stuff we can sell to other countries.Seems to me most people in this country cut other peoples hair or sell fast food for a living.Well the people of other countries can cut their own fucking hair thank you very much.

Most of the banks shouyld be shut down like jim rojers says, and leave the competent ones to pick up the pieces.

Get rid of most government jobs. and icould go on and on but i m bored with explaining this stuff to numbskull socialist parasites and i need to be up early in the morning to go to my proper job in the private sector and build and weld some large chunks of steel to sell to other countries so all the state parasites can enjoy their easy lifes for another day.

Bye Eck, i  feel better after that! Bring it on people...

Umm, possibly. But a radically smaller government is ok in my view.Gov. is better suited to some tasks where proffit should not be the first concern such as law and order, and a few  others. The host is strong enough to support a few parasites. But what we have now is totally stupid.

What were seeing now is the parasites complaining that they will have to die with the host.

Let the worthless critters try and feed of each other lol.
