Another Slap For Merkel As Her Presidential Pick Does Not Get Enough Votes In Second Round
The German presidential election is heading for a third round, after Chancellor Merkel's presidential candidate Christian Wulff was unable to generate an absolute majority in the second round against opponent Joachim Gauck. Even though this position is largely a figurehead, it is another symbolic slap in the face of the Chancellor, who finds herself navigating increasing dissatisfaction over her austerity measures, coupled with the controversial decision to bail out Greece and Spain, and French banks, further augmented by an increasing German desire to pull away from the Euro. In the third round candidates need only a simple majority to win. Voters consist of a special assembly that elects the head of state,
made up
of members of parliament and delegates from 16 states.

Hey, Merkel, if all you want is a FIGUREHEAD, we have a Nigerian that we can send to you. In fact, we will PAY YOU to take him. Please TAKE HIM !!!
Germany needs Hope & Change...
At least get the country right. Jeez.
Kenya?
Does that make Obammy a keynesian from birth?
LOL, I don't know but apparently he was a real bad ass in Indonesia.

Not to worry. We'll have a private little discussion with our friends out there about all this "austerity" nonsense. We'll fly some $1million gift cards out there good for shopping in Vegas. Then we can all go back to "Print and Bail".
OT: Regarding the article earlier this week about the fictional Russian press release of only accepting gold for international trade/settlement and the creation of a Gold Dolar banking system based in London, Switzerland and Singapore, In such a scenario why wouldn't the US/UK/Japan want to get out in front and create their own Gold Dolar more favorable to their interests? Does such a plan already exist? Furthermore if the Russians were to create such a system why not bring China, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia, South Africa, The Stans and every other resource/labor rich country on board?
Any thoughts are appreciated.
The U.S. can't gold-back anything without publishing a complete and verifiable audit of its gold reserves, which was last done in the 1950s. This audit would probably show that the U.S. has NO gold that is not either SWAPPED and/or UNENCUMBERED.
China, Russia, et al has published and verifiable reserves.
The U.S. is TOTALLY broke!
LSH,
Except for the backs of 300+ Million SOON to be SERF's.........

Pretty sure the IMF charter explicitly forbids member states from issuing asset-backed currencies.

Any proverbial slap that Merkel gets will be soothed by a Dubya back rub.
Speaking of which, isn't it time for the US to move back to actual (not just /de jure/) indirect election of its president? It might be worth paying close attention to the election protocol the Republic of Venice used to elect its Doge for over half of its thousand-year lifespan. CA's aspiring institutional reformers should probably take a close look at it too.
No need to toss out the Electoral College--founding fathers knew what they were doing. There's enough election fraud going on as it is without encouraging ACORN by making every cheated vote count for the total. At least make them WORK for it in EACH battleground state.
I wasn't suggesting direct election of the US president based on a single national constituency. I was suggesting something that would (hopefully) work the way that the electoral college was intended to work, but actually hasn't worked since at least 1828: as a genuine system of indirect election. Such a system would (if successful) weaken the power of both the Democratic and GOP machines and the zero-sum-game worldview they encourage and benefit from.
It's a tough sell for Merkel to give away German money to profligate Euro members while implementing austerity at home. You don't need a PhD from Iowa to figure that one out.
Nobody here dis her about austerity expect her coalition partner FDP which only have one agenda: cut taxes.(But only for the cronies)
There are a majority, even wealthy people , which would also pay more taxes but only when this game was fair.
Instead this coalition cut taxes for hotelowners as their first official act. Their austerity programm is focused on the little people, they have to pay the price for all this shit.
Even most voters of the FDP regrets their vote for this bunch of assholes which are only goin for their cronys and dont even hide this.
This election result means: Fuck you Angela and little Guido.
Wulf wasnt elected from his own partymembers.Even they have enough.
Its about her political style to do mostly nothin.
forget it! little gaydo won't get hard and angie, well, no need for discussion ;)
The third round should be a lot easier since the candidate needs only the most votes to win -- not an absolute majority as in the first two rounds.
Indeed:
Christian Wulff elected German president
