Apple CEO Steve Jobs Says Board Has Granted Him Medical Leave Of Absence

Tyler Durden's picture

Jobs also says that he will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company. As a reminder Apple accounts for about 20% of the Nasdaq. As a further reminder, the last time it was even rumored the COO was leaving, the stock tumbled $20 in the span of a few milliseconds. German listed Apple shares fall 1.8% following the news.

Memo from Jobs to employees:

Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple
employees:

Team,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Steve

If Jobs does not come back for whatever reason, it will be all over for Apple. Apple owes all her success to Jobs. Without Jobs, how is Apple going to be different from those run-of-the-mill computer companies such as HP or DELL?

It's terrible loss for the tech industry as well as the US economy. Because of Steve Jobs, Apple has been able to offer unique and very profitable products to the world that can't be easily replicated. Fortunately we still have Google.

Job's health problems are the worst kept secret.  He had cancer in 2004.  For two years pundits have pointed out Steve's "gaunt" physique and dramatic slimming, that did not improve since he was "cured".

Investors should have seen this coming.

Sorry to hear he has to take a formal leave of abscence (again...).

The last time he came back, he looked like a shadow of his original self. Gaunt, powerless.
For me, SJ has always re-presented the pied Piper of Tech, leading his followers into virtual land, making the macaddicts believe that what they had in their hands was an instrument to change the world. What a lie.

Plus, Apple made the "ear-bud" headphone ubiquitous. Something that is known to dull hearing.

The company, therefore the man himself, it's iconic representative have been bad for us. Just plain bad.

Strange co-incidence, if you think about it, that their first and most famous commercial was based on 1984.

Been selling pipe-dreams ever since.

I hope he never comes back to Apple, but retires, so that the charade it has wrought may end.

"....Apple made the "ear-bud" headphone ubiquitous. Something that is known to dull hearing."

Yer right. I use my ear buds on airplanes, at home, and in a car full of children to block out sound. Sure dulls my hearing down.

There's a little knob on the side of anything you attach your buds to, like an Ipod, labeled "Volume".   Try turning it down.

This whole sham of a market boils down to one guy with a printing press, another guy's health and some comments from other guys (cough, cough, FED members) who have proven zero credibility on economic matters.

Utterly tragic. Shame on the citizen's for letting it come to this without so much as a whimper.

as a consumer I want more from the companies...if this kind of fraud had happened in food industry, it would have been major disaster...

Anyone who is a visual artist understands the value of Apple computers completely; those with PC brains haven't a clue. It's not their fault - they just aren't wired the same way as artists.

Not just Steve Jobs but the hundreds and even thousands of creative geniuses who are behind Apple actually have revolutionized a major part of the world - it's just that linear thinkers don't have a clue that part of the world exists.

"The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones." In this case the good that Steve Jobs has done will live after him and will be his legacy, for which many people are and will be most grateful.

I've been a Macintosh user since 1989. I think I'm on my 11th Mac. I remember the bad old days around 1995 when Apple was trying to "reinvent" itself as an open-platform operating system like Windows. This was the days of the oatmeal-colored generic Macs (still better than Windows though). Jobs arrived and soon the iMac debuted. My most recent purchase is an iPod Touch (basically a mini-iPad), and it is amazing. I'm not even an Apple fanboy either, no iPhone and no iPad here. Jobs' vision made this company. It can still be agood company with good products. Like Sony. But maybe no longer a great company with astonishing products.
