Apple CEO Steve Jobs Says Board Has Granted Him Medical Leave Of Absence
Jobs also says that he will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company. As a reminder Apple accounts for about 20% of the Nasdaq. As a further reminder, the last time it was even rumored the COO was leaving, the stock tumbled $20 in the span of a few milliseconds. German listed Apple shares fall 1.8% following the news.
Memo from Jobs to employees:
Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple
employees:
Team,
At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.
I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.
I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.
Steve

I hope hes ok but cover
If Jobs does not come back for whatever reason, it will be all over for Apple. Apple owes all her success to Jobs. Without Jobs, how is Apple going to be different from those run-of-the-mill computer companies such as HP or DELL?
It's terrible loss for the tech industry as well as the US economy. Because of Steve Jobs, Apple has been able to offer unique and very profitable products to the world that can't be easily replicated. Fortunately we still have Google.
Would love to see an X-ray. I think he is an iphone dressed up as a human.
Funny cossack.
iSkeleton. Sounds like an app.
Just noticed that app is app(le). Weird.

Job's health problems are the worst kept secret. He had cancer in 2004. For two years pundits have pointed out Steve's "gaunt" physique and dramatic slimming, that did not improve since he was "cured".
Investors should have seen this coming.
Sorry to hear he has to take a formal leave of abscence (again...).
This can't be good. Why such high profile announcement? De Ja Vu. Hope not.
He had that liver transplant. I thought he was going to make it.
And that was sketchy. Next he'll have his brain transplanted into the body of a young man from India.
No one can transplant a brain.
A head however...
I guess AAPL is done
YOU MEAN NO MORE Icrap?!!
This is the end of civilization as we know it...
Hopefully it is the beginning of civilization. Maybe more people at work will do something work related, instead of sitting somewhere with their head buried in their fuckling i-gadget.
Good riddance!
ben berneke will qe7 the cancer. buy more. mortgage your house
Que up Harry, it's all good, all ready in the price, etc.
Well, he's on his second liver and had pancreatic cancer, never a good diagnosis. Hope he comes through OK.
Frankly, he's done remarkably well so far. I hope he does come through ok, but he certainly has some significant health challenges.
Even iJesus has his time... Time for the Cook to standup and make some chicken dinner!
no doubt, Cook is a smart guy, we have been here before, Jobs is a bad ass but plenty of smart people at Apple to carry the torch
Isn't that a pre-condition illness that he has?
Better start digging a hole...

Lucky for us all, the robust American economy has decoupled from China, Europe, and AAPL. This will all be forgotten at 7AM tomorrow morning when Europe is bailed out (again), even though Europe doesn't matter.
VIX to 0.
I think I read that Europe is being bailed out by AAPL...
Been wondering. One thing is clear.
Jobs is Apple and Apple is Jobs.
Whether you like Apple or not, the guy is brilliant there is no doubt in that.
agreed, cash flow and balance sheet speaks for themselves....they are a frickin cash machine
Maybe they can get an ex-Pepsi
executive to fill in for him.
The last time he came back, he looked like a shadow of his original self. Gaunt, powerless.
For me, SJ has always re-presented the pied Piper of Tech, leading his followers into virtual land, making the macaddicts believe that what they had in their hands was an instrument to change the world. What a lie.
Plus, Apple made the "ear-bud" headphone ubiquitous. Something that is known to dull hearing.
The company, therefore the man himself, it's iconic representative have been bad for us. Just plain bad.
Strange co-incidence, if you think about it, that their first and most famous commercial was based on 1984.
Been selling pipe-dreams ever since.
I hope he never comes back to Apple, but retires, so that the charade it has wrought may end.

"....Apple made the "ear-bud" headphone ubiquitous. Something that is known to dull hearing."
Yer right. I use my ear buds on airplanes, at home, and in a car full of children to block out sound. Sure dulls my hearing down.
There's a little knob on the side of anything you attach your buds to, like an Ipod, labeled "Volume". Try turning it down.
This whole sham of a market boils down to one guy with a printing press, another guy's health and some comments from other guys (cough, cough, FED members) who have proven zero credibility on economic matters.
Utterly tragic. Shame on the citizen's for letting it come to this without so much as a whimper.
News flow is awful. China, Europe,
now Jobs. Ramping it up with POMO
tomorrow will just confirm we're in
bizarro world.
did I just got my first comment sensored or what happened??? did I do something wrong
Jobs and Woz are the real deal. They had the balls to make something from nothing, and anyone who can't see that is a hopeless loser.

Wonder if Steve Jobs called Harry before he released the note to his employees?
B T F D
Looks like Harry pulled a HarryWanger for holding a stock too long.. Mr. "I have tight stops".. LOL. Down he goes..
At the end of the day, no matter who we are or how much money or power we have, we are just people, hopefully with families and friends who love us. Let's just wish him the best.
I don't like the way Apple is doing business, but I wish Steve health & strength.
I heard a rumour that Larry 'Brilliant mind' Summers is going to step into his shoes whilst he is on sick leave LOL!
After all he did such a great job at Yale and in the White house no?..................[unleash the junking lol]
Is Steve's medical leave of absence the BLACK SWAN event?
No.
Steve who?
Good thing for him he does not have to rely on ObamaCare. Just like Congress.
Tomorrow we may see Jobsless Recovery of the stock market. It's would be a miracle but it may well happen, if enough iQE is applied.
"Jobsless Recovery"

Apple should be taken to court for continues sale of bad product...they know that ip4 have serios engineering and design flaws...still they continued selling this bugphone, no update can resolve those hardware desing mistakes...
as a consumer I want more from the companies...if this kind of fraud had happened in food industry, it would have been major disaster...
all the best for steve anyway
Love how this crap always gets announced over weekends or holidays...
I predicted this for the new years
Anyone who is a visual artist understands the value of Apple computers completely; those with PC brains haven't a clue. It's not their fault - they just aren't wired the same way as artists.
Not just Steve Jobs but the hundreds and even thousands of creative geniuses who are behind Apple actually have revolutionized a major part of the world - it's just that linear thinkers don't have a clue that part of the world exists.
"The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones." In this case the good that Steve Jobs has done will live after him and will be his legacy, for which many people are and will be most grateful.
Buy the AAPL dip. Go ahead.
Do you think he'll free his slaves at FoxConn when he dies?
He's already beaten the odds on his cancer many times over since 2004. That new liver he bought himself in Tennessee certainly got him a little bit extra as well. Pancreatic cancer is horrendous. Hope he is comfortable, at least.
um....BTFD (where D is death?)
Being in good Health is pretty much everything,. Too bad so many take it for granite.
Rich, smart, famous and very sick? Poor and healthy? You pick it.
The last time it was a secret and he had a liver transplant. I guess this time there is no need to keep it a secret? I think we are at an end game focused on transistion.
How hard can it be to run apple anyway, I hear they put a cook in charge.
I've been a Macintosh user since 1989. I think I'm on my 11th Mac. I remember the bad old days around 1995 when Apple was trying to "reinvent" itself as an open-platform operating system like Windows. This was the days of the oatmeal-colored generic Macs (still better than Windows though). Jobs arrived and soon the iMac debuted. My most recent purchase is an iPod Touch (basically a mini-iPad), and it is amazing. I'm not even an Apple fanboy either, no iPhone and no iPad here. Jobs' vision made this company. It can still be agood company with good products. Like Sony. But maybe no longer a great company with astonishing products.
