Is Apple's Latest Fad Lying To Its Customers?
The storm in a teacup that has been Apple's little fiasco with the antenna issue on the new iPhone is becoming sufficiently threatening that more people are starting to pay attention. After Apple flatly denied empirical evidence that the phone's antenna system was corrupt, and insinuated that it was really just a software glitch which could be fixed with a simple software upgrade, today's news that Consumer Reports has confirmed that a hardware flaw is creating a reception problem, and as a
result, saying it has decided not to recommend the
phone, is a huge slap in the face for Steve Jobs and the iFad team, which have now been publicly outed as liars. Obviously the issue is not about the antenna - Apple's fans, like all good lab animals, will habituate to holding the phone with tweezers, chopsticks and a heat glove if it means they get to look cool in public. However the public response by Apple to being outed that even the greatest fad creating company in the world could create a new product failure, has been a royal gaffe. Has Jobs lost enough credibility to it being material to the stock? Probably not, although fans of fads are known to turn from docile lambs to vicious hyenas once a tipping point is reached, and it suddenly becomes cooler to actually hate Apple. Today's development may have just tipped the scales just a little in the wrong direction.

Yeah. Sorta like fiat currencies loosing their lustre, diminution of confidence, so to speak. (But those new 65' whip antennae look so rad.)
I think that Mel Gibson's most recent rants were actually about the iPhone rather his girlfriend.
Did you see the infowars article in support of Mel Gibson? I was surprised to read about his anti-fed stance from ten years ago before it was mainstream. Makes for good drama considering his Conspiracy Theory movie, too. I so don't know what to make of any of it.
Indeed, another interesting twist on "WTF" is in the news. As in "What News?" Gibson has been given way far too much profile. pilloried relentlessly for his antics as compared to much else of the transgressions of the spawning denizen of the Hollywood swamp. Mind you, in no way suggesting the man get a pass for anything, nor condoning any such actions.
But I too had the same reaction, same wonderment......... And did a doing a double take as to the sources from which this was emanating.....
Naughty Tyler!

it suddenly become cooler to actually hate Apple
Then consider me the Fonz!
Apple's all i've ever used across the board but i have to say their handling of this iphwn rollout has been positively Windoze-esque
hilarious!
I switched from Windows-based PC's to the iMac 2 years ago. Its been OK except I went thru a dealer I have no confidence in (no iStores in VT), and surprisingly the Safari OS has actually crashed (just shut down all programs/windows with no warning whatsoever) in 2 years more times than all my Windows based machines did in the prior 10+. So, the shine was already off my view of Apple... lets face it, this is America, home of the hype. Another icon bites the dust. BFD.
Magic 8 Ball says; Not Likely
My 3G i-phone sucks and I will add that AT&T, with virtually no coverage in my area, sucks really hard.
If AT&T has such poor coverage in your area, why did you buy a phone that can only be used with AT&T?
They are just buying time to find a solution to the problem.
They are buying the time for everyone to calm down and forget about it. They are not looking for solution either.(they are not going to do a recall nor give a free case).
Remember , time is the medicine- and Steve is the doctor.
Plus gayPhone4 was not made to make a calls , it was made to make a statement. There no bugs in gPhone – it’s a feature.
Google Nexus One FTW!!!!!!
Android likely will win out. Steve is good out of the gate, but lacks staying power. My magic 8 ball says the phone OS will be as unattached to the hardware as the PC OS, and iPhad will only run on 10 to 15 percent of the smart phones.
No sir, I didn't like IT.
My iphone 4 works fine. I did have to reinstall the os on it, which was annoying, but thats what I get for buying in the first batch.
This forgiveness toward Apple never gets old.
Eventually, the sex appeal will hopefully fade and you'll be lonely for substance.
I remember years ago, Apple commercials blatantly lying about Windows copying OSX when really Apple was copying third party apps used on the PC, i.e.; think Konfabulator that later became widgets/gadgets. Lying is not new to Apple.
"This forgiveness toward Apple never gets old."
Same goes for Toyota and other "paragons of reliability"!
I have to hold it sideways and shake it while singing "Kum by ya" (to keep the apple faeries happy) when I use it, but other than that it works great.

Mr. Caan
I seriously like your avatar.
Although mine reflects the market cycles, yours inspire a fighting spirit.
Kudos Sir!
A 180° flip followed by a 180° rotation of your avatar gives Pladizow's avatar. Question: Is this commutative?
I have not previously had the time to complement you on the "shakies." Did you film that on your iPhone whilst getting a lap dance?
Just because - us uneducated people can't hold the phone the proper way and are not willing to spend another 30$ for the case that Sinful fruit specifically engineered for this matter, does not mean people will stop buying what Steve sells to them.
And since sinful fruit knows that no matter how much he will screw their fans (without even using the baby oil) they will be hooked for life. There is no difference between people complaining about the gayPhone and still buying it, and rest of us complaining about mobsters and criminals in senate and congress- and keep reelecting those bastards over and over…
The analyst on Fast Money tried to suggest that consumers don't care about using the phone anymore. They just care about texting and the web. That's just dumb to wave away phone calls (he recounted dropping two calls on the way to the studio).
I remember when RIMM was THE phone stock. Trends come and go. The first adopters will move on (Android?) when it's too mainstream to have AAPL products. It's not cool when everyone has one. 2-3 years from now, the public will have moved on. Especially when U-3 hits 12-13% or more...
Doesn't JPM have a $400 price target, with 35/36 analysts rating it a buy?
The Fast Money guy may be on the mark for kids. My 18-yr old only texts, and her older siblings mainly text as well, and do not have landlines (oldest is 31). Oldest also lives in Portland, OR, went to Reed, is totally into the Portland thing, and has a Droid. She only uses APL computers.
WTF does an 18 year old need with a iPhone? The data charges are outrageous, the phone is overpriced. Oh, I guess daddy wants to spend on the little princess.
Yet 80% of the people i know, who has an iphone, are around 18. And guess what, they don't have any jobs and are not upgrading to 4. 4 sounds like the word for death in chinese by the way.
Just remember kiddo, 16 will get you 20.
The analyst on Fast Money tried to suggest that consumers don't care about using the phone anymore. They just care about texting and the web.
That is just odd. You still need an antenna (connectivity) to work properly to text and to have access to the web. Dum-dums will still buy it.
Is this Herman Munster guy serious?
According to Gene Munster the dropped calls are a black eye but nothing more. Despite these developments, “Apple can’t keep the iPhone 4 on the shelves,” he says.
”At the end of the day consumers are buying this phone for text, internet and email,” he adds. In other words, people don’t buy the iPhone 4 to make phone calls – instead it’s for it’s many other functions.
Why the fuck do they call it a phone then??
"Why the fuck do they call it a phone then??"
They did not. Steve called that a miracle. It's the stupid fans who calls it a phone.
I feel like an old lady sometimes. We have Tracfones for crying out loud. We use them to *gasp* call each other. I have a computer for emailing and for internet. My one high-tech item is a Kindle DX and that was a gift from my husband. I like to read in the tub and I can slide it in a Ziploc and not worry about dropping it in the bubbles.
I cannot stand looking around on the roads or at restaurants and seeing people sitting side by side, silently and frantically texting people or surfing the internet and ignoring the people they're actually supposed to be hanging out with.
I sometimes walk around with headphones but with nothing actually playing just so people will be less likely to talk to me. I wonder how many of those people are just sick of each other, branching out maybe across the world? But I hear you. There is good and bad in everything.
Hold up, someone is trying to talk to me...
I am remember back in the days when cell phones (mobiles to you Brits) became popular. I used to go to the local Barnes and Noble and sit there with my fake cell phone shouting things like, "Buy 30000 shares of IBM immediately!" God, people were impressed. Everyone wanted financial advice and pretty girls made no secret of their interest in me.
Michelle, I hear you. I also have a tracphone, which I never leave on--it's only for emergencies. I use the computer for bloody everything, and if people don't like it, that's too bad. I HATE phones. In my prior life, as a CEO of a chemical company, I could not get away from the bloody things, I had one in my car, I had a freaking Blackberry, etc. I HATE the damned things. And I find the idiots who are addicted to them farcical. Do not even go to Facebook; I briefly had an account, in an attempt to keep up with my kids, but found the general content so inane that I froze my account. I was also extremely worried about seepage of that sort of web content. Most people are oblivious about this. Take a look at this, it's a result of the Patriot Act, as extended by Obama:
https://http://www.activistpost.com/2010/07/ten-ways-we-are-being-tracke...
This is why we have alter egos (to be quite honest, 'they' already know who we are...)
Tracphone here.
Gotta admit, when I see somebody with an Apple product, I immediately lose a bit of respect for them. Like people wearing "members only" jackets in the day, or Sasson jeans, or with a DKNY shirt. Seems to me that 50% of the reason people use apple is so they can say they use apple.
Apple people remind me of 1st generation Honda hybrid people. Remember this? The car wasn't selling and Honda couldn't figure out why not. So they did some surveys. You know what it was? Douchebag hybrid buyers didn't think it looked "hybrid" enough. Like the Toyota Pious. In other words, the buyers didn't think the car would yell "I care more about the environment than you do."
Apple products are the same way. At least half the reason these people buy these products is so that they can demonstrate to others that they buy these products.
As for kids with cell phones and texting - NFW at my house. If I throw a party, all children must put phones away.
Most of the engineers I know (including myself) use Macs because the OS is BSD-based and stable.
Hey Harry....
[AHEM]....
APPLE IS IN A BUBBLE.
Indeed sir, indeed.
Hell yes.
I'm starting to like you, Harry.
Apple = FAOSchwartz for adults.
Decide to make your product a cheaply as possible with foreign slave suicidal laborers and this is what you get...eventually it comes back to bite you.
Everybody's making everybody with foreign semi-save labor. Boing. Wilson. You name it. Heck, it got the US off the ground a few hundred years ago. Intel? Dell? No different. Apple stuff delivers what is expected, and if you happen to be a programmer, you like programming in X, unix, and you don't mind if people like the apps on iphone, ipad, ipods. Fan boy gets old, from both directions. Consumer Reports can't even get washing machines right. Now we're going to run with their tech appraisals?
I am by no means an Apple fan but I have the iphone4. I used the cover from the old iphone that I replaced. Never had a drop call. Has thousands of apps. Screen is probably the best in the biz. What Apple should do is give away the cover which is less than a dollar to make. Yes, they handled it badly, but it is a simple cheap problem to fix and otherwise is a great product. I still dont get the ipad, though.
It's like a big iphone with newspapers, books, games, videos and better apps.
It doesnt run Adobe flash. It is too big to have "on you." Cant type report on it easily. All its good for is surfing the web & reading books. Anything else is better served w/ a laptop or ipod/phone.
I have more computers at home than money in my pocket.... and i do like Ipad , its portable, convenient, my trading programs are there , work emails and so on.
While it's a toy- but useful. And my daughter ( 5 years old) is using more than me for watching her power rangers on YouTube or using the drawing programs.
The iPad is awesome for reading zero hedge in the Jacuzzi. Got the nice thick leather incase case grips perfectly.my laptop usage dropped 90%.
Totally agree, i use it to read it most of the time and trading sitting on the backyard ( in south Florida)
Power Rangers? Kids are still watching that bad kabuki theater? Ugh. That is so early 90's.
"What Apple should do is give away the cover which is less than a dollar to make."
True, but then they would have to admit that there really is a problem - no?
If I were you, I wouldn't put it in a pocket below the hip.
I recommend Apple changing their name to:
Apple 2.0
Other proposals:
Anybody else?

I'd like to go on record as having hated Apple since the Mac Classic.
I'm always trying to do that, but it doesn't really count to go on record after the fact, they tell me.
Are their any American companies that Americans are still proud of? And I thought Tall Poppy Syndrome was an Australian condition. You guy have to remember it is still amongst the last American based computer companies left in the US spending dollars in the US on high tech innovations and R&D. So they have a glitch. Big fuckin deal. Ever tried to pass a Motorola Droid without pressing any one of the multiple awkwardly placed side buttons? Now that's annoying. Worse than a schizophrenic Apple iFanatic or iFundamentalist is cheap shooting bloggers who's only purpose is to chop the good work of others down in an attempt to justify and validate their own lack of achievement and self satisfaction.
Drod so far did not set the bar high, Sinful fruit did. You get from droid what you expected. You get from apple Steve Jobs finger.
Apple is made in China, yo. Nobody tell you? Ooops.
Dude I know that. I was talking about the R&D which remains solely in the US.
I'm trying to think of what R&D you're referring to...
It's not Apple's CPU. Most of the parts are proprietary, if not all. The OS core is open-source based. The professional software is Adobe and others.
Someone help me out here...
Think about it. What makes Apple so successful? Is it the style, the OS, the functions or the products? That's all R&D expenditure which BTW far exceeds it's competition. I have a Macbook and would NEVER go back to PC. It's the hardware/software collaboration that does it that no other manufacturer does. Having said that, my laptop is a utility and that's it. I care not for it's image or following and will certainly dump it for anything else meeting my needs.
http://seekingalpha.com/article/69148-it-s-all-about-apple-s-r-d
NEVER???
Yeah, I only caught that after I sent. Point is, I've yet to see a problem with the Mac. 20 s boot up, 5 s shut down, no pornhub virus's, good battery life (although it's nowhere near the 8 hours claimed) and now that I mastered the track pad, no more clits to deal with.
...no more clits to deal with.
Oooooh my.
somebody has an amazing spellchecker
Smart money sez sell that Apple stock now, it's as high as it's ever gonna get. The next worst day for AAPL is the day Jobs doesn't show up for work. Ever again, that is.
Add this story to the disinfo fanboi Daring Fireball Gruber was fed viz. the Google Voice Debacle by 'trusted Apple insiders': 'It was ATT! It was all ATT!' till the FCC disclosures shot that one down. I really felt bad for the fellow, talk about being left hung out to dry.
BTW, I wuv my Droid!
Now Apple has succumbed to the typical behavior of corporation do to their size. Their PR & Marketing team missed a huge opportunity to simply offer free silicon cases with the Iphone 4which although they retail for $20.00 the actual cost from China is likely $1.50
However that would mean they would have to admit to being fallible which is how they maintain they super margins. This type of stubborness will not play well and now Apple is in danger of becoming uncool to the Williamsburg crowd if they continue to act more corporate.
If they lose the following demographic below big trouble in little China in coming years. For your viewing pleasure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kn8DYjNjEoQ
Funny link. Reminds me of Japan where everyone tries too hard to be unique and obscure for the sake of being alternative only to realize they have all spontaneously assimilated.
PS Anyone who says "I don't care what other people think" more often than not, does.
Shoot, I'm nearly paranoid about what other people are thinking.
I could tell you, but then I may have to....
Like Wholefoods - you know that Apple is cooked when you start to see new employees that are inept, technology challenged, slovenly obese and just plain ignorant of its products. Growth story is Fin!
'Cept you gotta eat. WFMI will last the day....nothing will last the night....'cept PMs.
I like my IPhone3 and have the IB app that's nice for an emergency.
Lying SOBs. Shows how little they think of average American intelligence...
Go with Apple if you want to. That said, I'm hearing some stuff from people that regularly buy Apple products about staying away from the new iPhone.
However, I have yet to go wrong with Nokia. Solid phones, and open enough to do about whatever you want to do with them. Just don't expect them to support Perl well, but they'll give you Python on about every platform they have.
Your choice. If not Nokia, find a good Android-based phone. Shouldn't be hard to do if you want something in the same category as the iPhone.
As for what I have, it's a N900 with a good 3G carrier. I'll end up using that one for years given how much it can do.
Never bet against the stupidity of the American consumer.
$500 a phone? Sure! Wait, it's now $300 with a 2yr contract costing over $2400 on a crappy no service network?!!
Double down!!!
Jailbreak it, sell it on e-Bay, then get another smartphone.
Every1 complains about att network. I jsut switched from verizno to tmobile to get HD2 and nnwo switched from tmobile to att to get their data.
It's all depends o the location. Here in south florida, att been solid and there data stream is around 3mbs and uload around 1.5
Most people in US do't have that internet bandwidth at home. For drop calls- i don't have on 3gs, did not try the Gphone4 due to many complains but still thinking... as soon as the jailbreak comes in.
Crap, just noticed that my keyboard start producing random letters or just misses them.
"Crap, just noticed that my keyboard start producing random letters or just misses them."
Yeah, and it also used the wrong version of "their" in the first post too. Damn keyboards!
"att been solid and there data stream is around 3mbs and uload around 1.5"
Are you using that fabulous iPad you love?
(#465607)
No shit, huh?
The really funny part for me is seeing kids with these things. F---k me blind! Slap me in my head and call me a moron if I dumped 3 grand into a kid's phone for sole purpose of enabling him/her to become more of a retard through digital immersion.
LOL. +1
Buy first, add up costs later.
Lots of Bill Gates choir boys singing the same dissonant chord over and over and over...
Get over it already. After 30 years of screwing with the systemic PC POS-syndrome, switching to Apple has been a Jobsend for me:)
It's 8:00 PM; do you know where your virus is at?
some choice, a ship built by committee or from a narcissistic dictator (you're holding it wrong). I'm waiting for the next generation which will come in green, pink and blue b/c that's where the real innovation is
Virus? who would want to create a virus for a system that only few people uses. It just shows how popular the system is.
While Sinful fruit hardware is second to none, their operating system (osx) probably from a previous century.
No, but I know where my Steve Jobs nuthugger pool boy is at. Walden.
Dude, could you send him to me...my pool is Very Dirty. When he leaves, he won't give a damn about Jobs.
I've never bought an Apple anything, ever. I don't see the point. Does that make me cool in a counter-trend sort of way?? Please say yes.
Asking yourself if you are "cool" is like asking yourself if you are straight.
If you have to ask, then the answer is probably "no"...
"You're so money and you don't even know it."
APPLE IS IN A BUBBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rabbit ears, bitchez!
We are in the severest of depressions, one that is so epic, its reality is fathomed by only the shaman who sits on the shore. Visions have awakened us long ago, and for our words to move into thought, the other must have not only taken the drugs, they must have been on the quest. The quest was survived in heart by only a few; the rest either were not made to handle the trip, and quickly left our band, or the drugs proved too personal and the visions inspired dualistic fervor.
So the now is marked with dancing skeletons, fire breathing dragons, and manic unicorns; all of which come cloaked by technological disco balls and pop goes the weasel music. Yet while the world spirals downwards into death, the shaman meditates on a mountain, floating in a vision quest. Soon, the vision will be known. And it will be known by all. Yes, the waves will crash onto the dancing fervor and write its name on the earth in the form of a tombstone. This after the shaman had ran up the hillside, yelling over shoulder, "Wickedness comes this way!" The shaman paused halfway up, expecting to be followed by a band, only to see it was only the other shaman who ran beside. Knowing that it is expectations that break the heart, the journey up was continued quickly.
They thought him crazy whilst the same words were whispered into their ears near the shore. The feedback reverberated into the shaman's heart, but the shaman knew, knew, knew that the words were the only truth. The shaman never stopped; so the mantra continues.

Let's write a song about it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KkGVccgJrA
When you design a cell phone antenna, the housing, PCB , users hand, grip and head must be accounted for in your models. A person with a small hand and loose grip will "detune" the antenna differently than a person with a large hand and tight grip. How close you hold the antenna to your head also detunes the antenna. Both you hand and head also absorb some of the radiated energy. Whomever designed the antenna did a poor job in modeling and testing it. There may also be a sensitivity problem. In general all cell phones generate garbage that "jams" reception.
The BS from Apple that they were using the wrong algorithm to calculate the number of bars was beyond lame. What they are doing is to try and mask how much the signal strength changes with grip. It reminds me of how GM "solved" overheat complaints from people with Camaros with the LS1 engine. The LS1 thermostat is 190 degrees and GM allowed the LS1 engine temperature to go to 225 degrees before turning on the cooling fan. Originally the Camaro gauge would indicate this and people would freak seeing a 30+ degree gauge change at a stop light. GMs fix for all the complaints was to not allow the gauge to show the 30 degree swing anymore. The gauge now only goes high when you have truly over heated. Owners of Corvettes were allowed to see the 30 degree swing on the dash. I guess GM felt Corvette owners were smarter than Camaro owners.
Poor engineering or lack of testing on Apple's behalf is surprising but if true, inexcusable. I personally reckon it's a manufacturing/software flashing issue at Foxconn. With my experience in R&D, no testing was ever spared to meet or exceed specification. Synergistic Design Validation and Production Validation testing will never allow such an obvious issue slip by unnoticed but then again I have seen bigger f-ups in automotive from jamming throttles to leaking fuel rail hoses.
Stuffing so much functionality into a product that must meet a price point and a set delivery date is not easy. Much of the design is set by the chipsets chosen. If the problems cannot be mitigated with software updates you are limited in what can be done.
As data rates keep going up the reception problems are only going to get worse. You either have to add more cell towers or put adaptive antenna arrays.
Do not hold any cell phone to your head! Use speaker phone.
But that's not saying much, because buying either GM POS is a sign of mental diminutiveness.
Every company and every fad has a lifespan. We may be seeing the end of the line for Apple, at least in terms of being able to command outrageous margins. The dropped data feed at Job's last MacWorld speech, and now the antenna issue, are kind of like when Walkmans started breaking easily or Toyota gas pedals started to stick. Eventually everybody comes back to the pack. It won't happen overnight, but $350 AAPL might be a fading dream. Of course, I'm a person who only uses a phone to talk to people who aren't there, so I may not be qualified to have an opinion.
The same could have been said about Harley but they still command obscene pricing for their upper models.
Yeah but those day's my soon be over. No company can survive on it's niche reputation and clientele. Never NEVER.
http://motorcycles.about.com/b/2009/07/17/harley-davidson-profit-drops-9...
You have to hand it to Harley. They know the psychology of the average male. To bad the average male can't get a home equity loan anymore to buy a new Harley. Harley will survive but it will have to shrink production to meet demand. Investors will take a haircut as usual.
Well, as far as I can see, the roads are overpopulated with fat, middle age, balding guys struggling mightily to fight off the rigors of time, so fewer harleys on the road would be fine with me.
I'll one up you there. I only use company provided cell phones to talk on.
Define outrageous margins.
It's called free markets - whatever the market will bear...
Go off and grizzle about all the other "premium" brands for all the good it will do you.
People WANT to pay!!!
Why should Apple say no, or be different from every other business that also gets away with it if it can.
I did not mean they should not earn huge margins (outrageous). I meant that it is possible that their days of being able to command the margins they do may be coming to an end. They can currently command the spreads because of the "mystique" and the rabid following of the Apple cult. Are their MacBooks really twice as good as a Toshiba or HP? I've tried them, and I could not be convinced that one was worth $1500 vs. a slightly more powerful, and $850 PC. Maybe if I was a film editor or something, the Mac would prove easier and worth the dough, but to access the internet, send email, do the occasional photo, or produce documents, I cannot justify the additional (substantial) cost.
When I go into an Apple Store, or walk passed when a new product is coming out and the doe-eyed sycophants....er, fans....are waiting in line to be the first to get something they've lived without for the entire first part of their lives, I see the kind of folks Jim Bakker or Jimmy Swaggart had tossing them money until the "ministers" got caught with their pants down. This might be a "pants down" moment for Apple.
Its a friggin toy, for crying out loud.
Consumer Report ratings is like Moody's; amusing, but ultimately meaningless.
Here's an independent and comprehensive review of the Antenna. Must Read:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review/2
I think the guy is wrong in thinking there are only 2 antennas. Im guessing there is another used for GPS.
Yeah, not buying it. Apple nuthuggers are a dime a dozen. You could shoot iShit out of a iPotato gun into these nuthuggers mouths and they would tell you it tasted like Frosted Flakes.
What's "amusing" is that you, and the other Apple nuthuggers to whom you directed us, want us to believe that the thousands of complaints from consumers about the shitty, subpar, backwards reception of the iPhoney 4 are not to be trusted, but, rather, we should read a pseudo-scientific religious orgasm piece by an Apple nuthugger and trust that alone. And, note, the guy referenced is living accross from a cell tower and the proximity of the cell tower is WHY he lives there. Get a life dude.
Had you bothered to actually reading the article that you were directed towards, you would've realized that what you wrote as a response is nothing more that your own brand of "Frosted Flakes".
Um, no dude. I read it. The guy is plainly an Apple nuthugger. Given that, his review is worthless. It's like getting Greenspan to review Bernanke. What's the point? You know the defects will not be called out.
The guy had a positive review written before he even held the phone.
Time will tell Dude - if the antenna is really a dud, it will only get worse as Apple tries to convince its base that there are clothes on Emperor Jobs.
Apple, rolling out Steve Jobs his'self, first denies there’s any problem, when it is obvious to anyone holding one of their new iBirthdefects that they are defective as hell. Then APPL insists that a software update will fix what, to any RF engineer, has been and is an obvious physical design flaw. A serious one.
Here’s betting apple's next “fix” will resemble Donald Rumsfeld’s solution to biological warfare – just wrap your iBugPOS in plastic and duct tape, so your hand won’t be able to electrically short out and detune the phone’s external wrap-around antenna element.
The Apple RF designer or design “team” who stewarded this deformed hardware implementation into a world that now depends upon iGarbage sales to prop up an entire nation's “consumer economy” numbers should be placed on the government’s no fly list. The resulting depression of Q3's “recovery” due to slack Apple sales numbers, plus the ultimate redesign and replacement costs of all of these iDuds, will be nothing short of of iTerror!
Apple just admitted its Time Capsule external storage units built back in 2008 were defective. This looks like a pattern -- deny at first and then only admit to problems much later. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/apple-admits-to-dodgy-time-capsules/8...
USA is in deep computer idolatry (as well as oil idolatry).
This is a cause of total mess and up-coming Depression.
It's actually a brilliant plot to boost sales of those official $29 Apple rubber bumbers which after shipping each provide a net profit of $28.95...destined to be their most profitable app to date
Used to work at Apple. Not a fan. But, I can't blame Steve on this one. Likely they had to rush the product to shipment because one of their engineers publicly lost their proto.
When the product is in the public, you <i>have</i> to go to market. Soon. They might or might not have known about this problem before release.
If they did, it wouldn't have mattered. They wouldn't have had time to work on it for very long once the proto was revealed to the public.
Don't care about the MAC vs. PC debate. You just have to make the product cycle or it costs you a lot more money. In this case, I'm betting they had to speed it up.
I wrote my PhD thesis on a 16 MHz Macintosh LC purchased in 1990. I stuck with Verizon, and bought a Palm Pre. Awesome phone. Just wish there were more apps. My son and my girlfriends son are both off to college this fall with Mac Notebooks.
Personally, I have an iPod Touch (the iPad is just an expanded iPod), and I can't stand the Safari browser. Can't stand it. Not only is it just weird to me, but it doesn't run flash and half the time I end up with the "blue lego of death" signifying a flash panel the browser can't display.
iFad!
Priceless. I say copyright that if it's an original.
In the post ipad world that is surely coming, it will be priceless.
iFad.....whoever did that, brilliant. I'd buy a t-shirt for sure.

I have purchased over 10 apple computers, 2 phones, and several iPods during the past 8 years.
All of them remain fully functional. Fully....
I can't say as much for the Windows driven garbage I have chucked over the years.
I am constantly on the phone trying to help my parents with PC issues. Unwanted pop up menus, crashes freeze ups etc.
To each his own. Mine are all working fine.

With that product inventory history, then why did you have to purchase so many of their products if they 'are all working fine'?
Which is why when it comes to phones, I ONLY buy Nokia.
Karl Denninger shares your sentiment:
I have never been impressed with the iPhone (any generation) in terms of RF. Ever. It has always been a "form before function" device from my perspective, all the way back to the original units. Then again I'm spoiled - the best RF-performing GSM phone I've ever used was a Nokia 3395. I may still have one laying around here somewhere, and all of my old Nokias (including a 6610 which was nearly as good) still work just fine. Old, yes, but one thing Nokia does know how to do is design and build an RF section.

I think it was a huge mistake to outsource the phone and iPad to Foxconn. I realize these aren't production problems (at least I don't believe they are) but business is all about image and the Foxconn suicide story is going to be front and center all because of Job's arrogance. The changing social mood in America guarantees it. Apple remains a quality company with quality products. My MacBook and iMac are the 2 best computers I've ever owned, hands down. It's a shame these guys never learn. Corporate arrogance leads to dust ups which undo the brand. I thought jobs was smarter than that. Now he's just Michael Dell with groupies.
Ironically, RIMM's CEO sounded annoyed and maybe nervous that its seemingly inferior product was bested by iPhone 4G. All RIM has to do is let Apple's arrogance on the matter perpetuate negative publicity for the company. Too big to fail? See AAPL.
