Assange To Be Indicted Under US Espionage Act
Here it comes, via ABC News:
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, the man behind the publication of more than a 250,000 classified U.S. diplomatic cables, could soon be facing spying charges in the U.S. related to the Espionage Act, Assange's lawyer said today.
"Our position of course is that we don't believe it applies to Mr. Assange and that in any event he's entitled to First Amendment protection as publisher of Wikileaks and any prosecution under the Espionage Act would in my view be unconstitutional and puts at risk all media organizations in the U.S.," Assange's attorney Jennifer Robinson told ABC News.
Robinson said a U.S. indictment of Assange was imminent.
Justice Department officials declined to comment on the possible coming charges, but earlier this week, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the release of the documents had put the United States at risk and said he authorized a criminal investigation into Assange.
"The lives of people who work for the American people has been put at risk; the American people themselves have been put at risk by these actions that are, I believe, arrogant, misguided and ultimately not helpful in any way. We are doing everything that we can," Holder said Tuesday. "We have a very serious, active, ongoing investigation that is criminal in nature. I authorized just last week a number of things to be done so that we can hopefully get to the bottom of this and hold people accountable, as they -- as they should be."
Very soon, we expect that every jouranlism degree will come with a free indictment of treason and a sentence of public stoning.

US Department of Lies is more like it. Tear the whole Constitution UP why don't you?
Well, if this news is true, that key will be released a lot sooner than later...
Butteryfly kisses?
US news media... A.K.A. Ministry Of Truth
Following the script to a "T". Will they seek the death penalty on Julian? Or just 250 life sentences?
In an empire of lies, truth is treason.

I'm pretty sure that the Scribes and Pharisees asked similar questions re: Jesus of Nazareth. Check your premises.
I'm pretty sure Christianity is warped beyond belief until Jesus returns. check your Bible.
Let me explain clearly why activating -- rather than abolishing -- the Espionage Act is an act of profound aggression against the American people. We are all Julian Assange. Serious reporters discuss classified information every day -- go to any Washington or New York dinner party where real journalists are present, and you will hear discussion of leaked or classified information. That is journalists' job in a free society. The White House, too, is continually classifying and declassifying information.
As I noted in The End of America, if you prosecute journalists -- and Assange, let us remember, is the New York Times in the parallel case of the Pentagon Papers, not Daniel Ellsberg; he is the publisher, not the one who revealed the classified information -- then any outlet, any citizen, who discusses or addresses 'classified' information can be arrested on 'national security' grounds. If Assange can be prosecuted under the Espionage Act, then so can the New York Times; and the producers of Parker Spitzer, who discussed the WikiLeaks material two nights ago; and the people who posted a mirror WikiLeaks site on my Facebook 'fan' page; and Fox News producers, who addressed the leak and summarized the content of the classified information; and every one of you who may have downloaded information about it; and so on. That is why prosecution via the Espionage Act is so dangerous -- not for Assange alone, but for every one of us, regardless of our political views.

SHOCKER: US State Department ‘cleared’ the release of Wikileaks documents published so far
http://www.pakalertpress.com/2010/12/04/shocker-us-state-department-%E2%...
"Despite public perceptions, Wikileaks does not make the material it receives available directly to the public. It sends the documents to newspapers, which decide what news is fit to print. As of this writing, Dec 2, 2010, four days after the New York Times and other newspapers began publishing scores of articles; Wikileaks has only posted 623 of the 250,000 documents they claim to have released to their website. (2) Neither the New York Times, the Guardian or the other newspapers apparently in possession of these materials have published them either.
Worse, these 623 ‘leaks’ were apparently cleared by the State Department itself. According to noted American civil rights attorney Michael Ratner, “In the recent disclosure, Wikileaks has only posted cables that were reviewed by the news organisations and in some cases redacted. The news organisations showed them to the Pentagon and agreed to some of the government’s suggested redactions.”
Interesting. I checked out 2 documents on one of the mirror sites, and both had critical names of people blacked out. I thought, gee what's the big deal, these documents talk about something everybody knows is going on but doesn't give out any names....so, so what.....how is this a threat to anyone? Now if what you are saying is true, then these documents have been redacted by the state dept. and that actually makes the experience make sense to me.
This confirms my suspicions about this whole thing. Nothing is being leaked that isn't being allowed to be leaked. Pay no attention to the other hand.
SHOCKER: US State Department ‘cleared’ the release of Wikileaks documents published so far
So you're shocked by what Assange's attorney stated on Judge Napolitano's Freedom Watch last week? He said that Wikileaks asked the State Dept to review the cables before release but they declined. Yes, names have been redacted by Wikileaks, sometimes at the suggestion of print journalists working with Wikileaks. This was also clearly stated on Freedom Watch last week by the parties involved.
It's not as if this was some big secret which Wikileaks has tried to hide.
Avaaz, the world's most active human rights organization, is developing a worldwide protest (400,000 petition sigs in just the past 24 hours.)
Please take a look--these guys are the real deal. They're planning full page ads in newspapers worldwide.
http://avaaz.org/en/
I understand avaaz.org is funded by George Soros.
http://reference.findtarget.com/search/Avaaz.org/
Looks like their friends with Gordon Brown as well.
http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/7512843-brown-in-unprecedented...
Now there are two of Natures Natural Nobleman. Georgie & Gordo !
Sit and think through the worst possibilities long enough and your only reasonable action is suicide.
This Soros' "Forces of Satan" meme is beginning to smell like an Illuminati scheme for undermining credibility of all liberal organizations, period.
Which will be a convenient outcome for the fascists because the vast majority of potential opposition to this shit will have to come from liberals. You know Beck ain't gonna do it.
There comes a time when you've got to embrace the enemies of your enemies, if you must view it that way.
My point is that I believe Julian Assange is a tool of the elite. So why would I want to help him?
Exactly my point--this line of analysis only leads to trusting nobody and doing nothing for anybody but yourself.
Clever explanations notwithstanding
I don't understand why you can't see the difference between questioning authority and not trusting anyone.
There is no bottom to the hole of distrust. Especially when guilt by association is a determinative rule. While "Six Degrees of Separation" does not strictly hold up to rigorous statistical analysis, the concept nontheless captures something real.
There is no one you can absolutely trust but yourself.
Of course, if you're real honest, you can think of plenty of times when you shouldna trusted that fool, either.
Getting back to point again, I'm not signing a petition circulated by an organization that associates with George Soros and Gordon Brown. Especially when I don't even agree with the petition in the first place. You go right ahead.
As an enquiring mind, you should watch the impact of the Soros meme right here in the ZH forums. It is instantly and poisonously divisive to people who otherwise agree almost completely about what matters most.
There is something very wrong about that.
What it shows Bob is the polarization of individuals into the duopoly of left and right. To Fox, Soros is mocked by Beck as Dracula himself when Soros is the only individual media owner of scale that came right out and said TBTF banks should be broken up.
This reminds me of the criticism of Warren Buffett. Buffetr calls out the gross imbalance in the tax structure favoring the rich, highlighting class warfare in no uncertain terms most publically but is villified still by a portion of the population. To me it makes perfect sense to continue investing into the stupidity of governments as Soros and Buffett do. And Soros is funding mechanisms for stable monetary system research to the tune of $100M. I have talked to many investors, the guy is the only one with true balls of his stature and putting his money where his mouth is.
Y'know guys, it's gonna be pretty lonely being the one dissenting voice on here, but I'm of the opinion that we (The United States) live in a pretty bad neighborhood (the world at large) with neighbors (not literally, but you get the point) who mean us harm - and pure transparency for transparency's sake is potentially very dangerous. I, for one, don't really relish the idea of waking up to a mushroom cloud. Personally, I think having a functional security apparatus, is a pretty good idea. I do not think the wanton display of state secrets is the right way to do things. Are there some bad actors and abuse? Sure. But I'll take that over a suitcase nuke in my back yard any day. Just one man's opinion. I invite comment (and/or junking if it is so desired)...
Yeah, the problem is you can't make yourself "safer" by becoming the bad guys. Because you end up surrounded by bad guys.
Do they hate us for our freedoms?
No, they hate us for taking away their freedom.
"They" don't hate "us." A few nuts on each side use violence to gain power and money. These people seek roles as "leaders" and "heroes."
Sure they do - but you just need to figure out who "they" are.
And you don't need to leave the country to find them either...
This sort of thing inevitably leads to duck season/rabbit season styled "pronoun trouble."
In this instance, I would recommend reading a little more about the rest of the world.
Most people I have met on my travels didn't try to kill me first thing, you know.
Perhaps you've already done so, but Howard Zinn had a good view on 'Security'. His take on American History - and indeed her 'Enemies' is worth a look. I have no axe to grind against americans either, just mad fucks whose juice is POWER. The UK has its own dark history too, and the Chagos Islands were the first thing I read about on my search into the unknown. Then I read about how we like to ship things like electric shock belts to other countries as a valuable export, and the rabbit hole continues from there...
It's us (COLLECTIVE PRIVILEDGED WHITEY) that fucked up the planet, no one else bro.
Yet, there is hope: Fear of the unknown is the primary controller of man. Trust me though, Fear ain't shit if you look it in the eye, day by day...
Try the library and see how far the rabbit hole goes...
p.s I did not junketh thee
I'm with you there man.
Clayton, you sound like a reasonable guy but the cables are a smoke screen... there was very little blow-back on this story until Assange announced he had dirt on TBTF Banks. Since then, he's been hunted down like a dog... first the questionable "sex crimes" smear, now espionage?
Wikileaks did not publish the cables, they released them to other news organisations who reviewed and published as they saw fit (reportedly some cleared with government agencies first).
Here's the link to Avaaz, for those that want to sign the world wide protest (300,000 in 24 hrs so far).
http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/95.php?CLICKTF
None of the information "leaked" was anything that our perceived enemies did not already know. Hell, most Americans who are paying attention could deduce it. Personally, I think it is healthy to have investigative journalists put their neck on the line to expose the truth to the public at large. The government is violating Assange's Constitutional Right to free speech. They are only doing this because they lost control of delivering "content" through their authorized thought cleansing media outlets.
I agree with all that you've written except that Assange is NOT an American citizen and therefore has no 1st Amendment right(s). We, as American citizens DO have a right to this information and judge our Govt accordingly -- this is what TPTB do not want!
Correction - Assange is not an American citizen and was not operating on American soil and therefore the US has no jurisdiction to prosecute him.
I did junk you, because if you are willing to give up your freedoms (e.g. 1rst amendment) for safety, then you deserve neither, and will end up with neither.
I also recommend you travel. I have been around the world, I lived overseas quite a while, and nowhere did I find people who woke up in the morning wondering how to harm the US. In fact I found quite the opposite...the overwhelming majority of this world is hospitable, and just trying to get on with their own individual problems in life. They would prefer the US just to leave them alone and in peace.
Are there bad guys "out there?" You bet there are and you can also bet that the US has had and continues to have its share of bad guys and gals too. That will always be the case and such is the history of the world. Deal with the individuals, leave the rest of us with what freedoms we have left and most importantly, leave us the fuck alone.
And for my closing punch let me turn a typical saying from your line of thinking back on yourself and that is...are you ready....it is:
"what are you afraid of, if you have nothing to hide? If the US hasn't done anything wrong, then what's the problem with Wikileaks? Is there something you should confess?"
YEE-HAW Bitchez!
well said
Thank you. I hope that if I get thrown into a locker and tossed into the sea for these comments that you will be there to rescue me, Davy Jones? ;>)
Yep, Clayton, here we are, mindin' our own business, just mowing our own lawn, trying to be a nice quiet neighbor, and but we're surrounded by really nasty people in the 'hood who for God-only-knows-what reason are pissed at us!
Appreciate the thoughtful comments of those who chose that avenue. I don't think the world is chock full of people out there to do us harm. It's really the bad state actors and extremists (religious, and otherwise) that concern me. I have traveled and totally agree with the sentiment that many, if not most, cultures and peoples are warm and welcoming. I hope the same when they come here. I do, however, believe it is necessary that some things remain secret. This site brings a lot of what seem to me to be anarchocapitalists out of the woodworks, and I get that. I think we all share a common mistrust of power - I certainly feel that way. I'd rather we live in a world where we could all just (from a nation-state perspective) get along, but, in the words of Ice T (and in an effort to keep it light), "shit ain't like that"... Anyhoo, again, just one man's humble opinion - Happy trading and philosophizin, party peoples...
Your analysis is purely abstract. There (always) comes a time when people and governments lose the trust of others. That includes their own.
One word: Encryption. Perhaps you should pass it on to the US Military and State Dept.
yes; let's "hold people accountable."
But NOT the people whose malfeasance was exposed by the leaks, just the people who did the leaking.
KILL ALL WHISTLEBLOWERS
All your (alleged) semen are belong to us.
just one small problem...are media is already bought and paid for so why would they care about freedom of speech...they lost interest in that long ago...
Better watch your back, TD.
i'd second that....aren't there sections of the "patriot" act that allow financial institutions to keep certain financial info secret?????
we are so far down the well now there's no hope, is there? this country is really finished.
always use a condom , TD..

Not a thing new under the sun today...
A Politician is a professional (sometimes hardly professional) liar.
It is their JOB to lie to people just like a butcher cuts meat or a teacher teaches.
Do not confuse leadership with politics. They can exist together, but not very commonly.
I missed the part where they are going after the NYT and Guardian.
They're not holding any super-secret BofA data.
Those parts of the MSM are on "double-secret probation", don'tcha know?!
Boy, we never saw this coming did we?
Yep, setting an example here for anyone else who wants to get a bit too uppity in their criticism of govt 'officials' or other protected class.

Don't need to be a hacker to play this game. Smart.
watch out that its not just a case of the hunter setting out a salt block.
yea, cuz it's ILLEGAL to put Justin Bieber tags on a Youtube wikileaks vid
indeed. I wouldn't touch that shit with a shitty stick.
Civil Disobedience should be an individual expression. The only centralisation should be the sharing of those experiences. Use the media to disseminate. That's the right way.
I'd be wary of any time the Media is telling me what to experience, regardless of how black and anarchic the instruction may seem.
They're telling people to search the leaks. For years and years. Keep at it, you'll find something. Everytime you do, flood the 'net with your videos and tips. Info-geddon!
Fuckers.
Heh. Not to worry. It's the real deal.

Espionage Act: How the Government Can Engage in Serious Aggression Against the People of the United Stateshttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/naomi-wolf/post_1394_b_795001.html
how will this effect the 4 gigabites of BoA?
Indeed. Like we all said: wiki leaking the cables was a minor infraction; wiki leaking dirt on Bank of Fraudmerica is a whole new level- they take out the big guns aka, big money bribes. Who owes who a favor? 'Senator, didn't you owe me a blow job? Yeah, I guess I did. How about Asange's head?'
I wonder when and where the water boarding will take place.........my guess is it will be in a free country that guarantee's free speech and freedom of the press.
Someplace where Assange will "hate us for our freedoms" no doubt.
Hopefully he really is in the dark about many of the finer points of wikileaks and cannot provide them with much information...
The guy was a serious hacker as a 14 year old boy. Many moons ago. I don't know, but I gotta think he's thought this thing through--with many equally intelligent and committed people--night and day for years.
Please take a look at Avaaz.org (my earlier post.) They're planning full page ads in newspapers worldwide. These guys are truly the shit. Looks like they'll be assuming the Point position on this going forward--which is good, because in this fractured environment somebody's gotta do it and nobody has the chops they have for the job.
The action your mentioning Bob is an alliance between Soros and Irish Central. Combined funds of funds are bigger than most governments. This is history repeating itself. The investment community funds the reforms on the way up until growth in establishments tops out, then funds reform for micro-caps to bloom.
He aint in the dark and that's not their point. The intimidation will not work, it is backfiring. History always has a breaking point. Hope this is it.
Perhaps this is the rallying cry for Neil Howe's new hero generation that should be comming of age any time now.
We are in the crisis stage for sure. Only question is: Is all this crap leading to the main event or just a precursor for something seemingly unrelated (total war for example).
was thinking about the jailed nobel winner today. It is now or never. The economic and energy shit is hitting the fan. They will clamp down hard unless we resist with equal force. You are right. We need a leader. A passionate, ethical, courageous, brilliant, and human leader.
At this point it looks like John Connor is going to be a hacker.
If you can hear this transmission, you are part of the resistance.
Is there such a country? If so, I'd like to relocate.

An Eric Holder sighting! Such rare species indeed. (in my best Attenborough)
You beat me to it! Where has this asshole been? Now he makes an appearance! He has to be so irritated his overlords are making him work.
He's been busy protecting those poor, defenseless illegal alien criminals from the lawful citizens of Arizona.
Yeah, Holder shows up to indict people in other countries. What a POS. He needs impeachment, or, what i always do, ignore the government because we know they're only up to no good.
Go about your business. If government gets in the way, tell them to step aside. If they won't, leave. Pretty simple. Starve the beast.
he was coined Eric "Place" Holder by the Washington CityPaper during his stint as US Attorney for DC. This is the furthest thing from a conservative rag that there could be
Seriously! He lets the New Black Panther Party patrol polling places with clubs and knives, but he's going after this little twink at his corrupt master's behest. I'd admire Obama more if he challanged Julian Ass-Lozenge to release it all in the next 10 minutes or go down in history as the first dickless wonder with a condom leak.
Glenn, can't we leave the race baiting out of this one... please?
So Cow Skool Keef - does this mean that you and all 60 or so of your viewers think I'm The Wurst Person in The Wurld!?
Bill Clinton sold nuke bomb secrets to the Chinese and nothing happened to him. Hopey is even worse. There is no bigger traitor to the usa people than the president.
Nothing to do with secrets. It's about money... Bank of Fraudmerica
i thought it was because of wiki leaks we now know the Chinese economic stats are all a bunch of BS? Isn't that good to know? Why is the financial media "celebrating this"?
What? You expect the financial media to figure the the flippin' obvious. The people in charge hate Assange, not because he reveals stuff we don't know, but because he documents the blindingly obvious.
Just one more comparison of the relative "harm" done by opening our dark corridors of silly global conquest to public light versus the continued banksta games of rape.
Since the rapers own the game and Julian did not have dispensation to act, he's screwed.
ASSANGE TO ESCAPE FROM POLICE AT THE TOP OF SOME STAIRS
For some British humour see:
http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/war/assange-to-escape-from-police-at-...
How many guards does it take to throw a prisoner down the stairs?
None--he fell!
Detective: "What happened?"
Cop: "Well, it's an obvious suicide. You can see how he shot himself in the head 4 times, then lit his body on fire, then jumped out the 22-story window."
Detective: "Yes, I see...."
I liked the Brazilian electrician addition.
Just release the files Pilate! I mean, Assange.
Let's bring this whole corrupt to the core system down now, so another generation doesn't have to suffer this financial and oligarchical tyranny.
I'd keep the insurance file, but I'd dump the BAC files NOW to set the tone of this discussion. If he sits there and does nothing, he'll be executed in no time.
Absolutely agreed. It's time he expanded the discussion so the world can see what this is really about.
Plus, how can one argue that redactions serve to keep Bankstas out of harm's way? Let's see just WHO these Bankstas really are!

I guess they realize the Swedish case isn't going to make him go away.
What is the jurisdiction of the US to try a non-citizen that did something in a foriegn country? This is really reaching, and if the US pushes forward, they make a great case for any country to put war crimes and crimes against humanity charges against Bush, Cheney, Rummy, Gonzo, Muskey, Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid, et. Al. Does the US really want to go there? Or look like complete hypocrites when they say that this is different and no other countries have no right to try US citizens, but the US has a right to try any citizen of any country?
Very good question, and good point.
Agree, this is ridiculous. Our government has put us at risk worldwide. Another fabrication of evidence towards their goals. Does every country bow under the fist of our democracy (corporate fascism). Our own politicians outed a CIA operative intentionally and not much happened.
Pretty much. The most hated of global species has become....more hated.
But our government is trying to "protect" us from those evil doers, those America haters, those anti-Americans, who hate us for our freedom.....you know the ones......
I remember back in the 80's and 90's when Americans were generally liked globally. Well, that has since changed.
It is actually a very profitable business model. Create evil doers worldwide (make money here) and protect the citizens from those evil doers (make more money here). As someone said...... if you mess with us we will spread democracy in your country, so watch out.
you said it Rick, this thing is fresh off the Scooter Libby trial. I hope to hell everyone can see how low we've sunk. At the other end, that may be the best part of all of this. It seems desperate and pathetic from the government's position. They are now openly making war on information. This time however, they have widened the playing field and the internet and the world have taken notice.
Except, of course, that these things only work in one direction. When the US authorities wanted to try British bankers in connection with (I think) Enron, the UK happily complied. A few months later, the UK asked the US to transfer suspects the other way, the US told the UK to go f... themselves.
i am copying your comment. excellent point!
What is the jurisdiction of the US to try a non-citizen that did something in a foriegn country?
I was wondering that same thing myself.
Our country is collapsing, just not fast enough...
Washington is waste deep in hipocracy... Can't you just smell the fear and despiration?
Remember the words "Enemy combatant" ? They can pluck anyone from anywhere and place them in an alien jurisdiction and try the "Enemy combatant" in a military court.
that's where we're at, that's what they want. But with that comes the proportional number of critics
That's the whole point here, and it is why the very notion of murder and espionage has always been very, very relative. The law is based on force, and can only be applied to people who have an inferior power to those who issue the law.
+1
That would also be the basis for that whole TBTF meme.
Then shouldn't Ellsburg and the New York Times be prosecuted for publishing the Pentagon Papers?
You answered your own question there. And virtually everybody on the planet knows it.
+100
BTW, Who's the chickenshit retard who junked Detersbb?
I'd just love to hear your justification.
If he is charged with espionage, The US can grab him whereever they can get him and where he actually committed the espionage is of no consequence.
Hey, don't forget Condi, the most witless, unqualified failure ever. Planes flying into buildings? Nobody ever thought of that. Sure, Condi, now Fuck off.
they'll probably try to grab him and have him hauled here or work some extradition strongarm to get him onto our soil.
THEN we will see a complete aboutface by the Administration on the propriety of military tribunals as opposed to criminal courts. For terrorists and brown people, we want to red carpet. For a white guy, fuck, summary execution.
The charges are in complete alignment with a 2012 Presidential candidate saying Assange should be assassinated.
You know what I think. I think things are coming unhinged at the top. I really do.
It's going to be insane rants entered into the Congressional record -- and then the broken glass and bullets.
i think his first mistake was trusting his own lawyers -- just turn yourself in and explain things to the reasonable scotland yard and everything will be ok.
LOL . It used to be that you could get justice if you had enough money to buy it. I guess it depends on who you're up against.
He was feeling that rock and hard place predicament. Look at his situation: Stay underground and look like a guilty fugitive while making an "extraordinary rendition" or assasination easy OR Go public and make the best of that position.
I would need only a minute or two to weigh those options . . . and go the same way he did.
I'm not sure choosing the UK to get apprehended in was such a smart move. The UK has signed a treaty with the US that essentially means it will hand over anyone the US wants it to hand over.
Yet his choices were realistically limited to Western nations. And, once again, he was going to be arrested--best case scenario--no matter where he went.
I'm hoping he's hoping this will only strengthen their audience, attention, and education.
Well, whether he knows it or not, it's what is actually happening, thank God.
When faced with incipient insanity people often do make the right choice.
The hijackers have taken the plane. With box cutters. You know I think we know how to handle this one.
Yeah, it's a "Let's Roll" moment.
once the US indictment is confirmed the case in Sweden will be dropped which will free him up for extradition to the US.
"inconclusive evidence".
agree..... "serious rape charges" (renewed) were a VERY thin cover for Assange's extradition to Amerika
The Swedish case is falling apart. It was just a ruse to get him into custody. It worked.

Justice department's website down in 3...2....1..
The Swedish sex charges are bogus.
Just two freaky leftist women trying to move Sweden's rape laws to the left. Imagine a man having consensual sex with two different women -- but not at the same time.
The Swedish sex charges are bogus.
as are other charges...
Sergey lawyer tells jury Goldman is "bogus, bogus, bogus". Used "weasel words". Prosecutor tells jury to disregard his own witness; "meaningless".
http://www.courthousenews.com/2010/12/09/32471.htm
Jury gets case.
Fortunately, the remainder of the world's "left" community are seizing control of this "leftist" bullshit very hard and very heavily.
And, honestly, I'm as pleasantly surprised by it as anyone.
Gotta give thanks to Lefties sometimes. Nobody can be wrong all the time . . . regardless of how you view their actions the rest of the time.
And we used to complain about the communists jailing and killing off their opposition. How the world has changed....Stalin would be proud.
