"Bankrupt" Jefferson County Did Not Buy REITs Today, Summons National Guard To Maintain Order

Tyler Durden's picture

Oddly enough, Jefferson county which got into a dash of trouble buying some interest rate swap or another without reading the prospectus which despite guaranteeing perpetual appreciation distinctly said in the invisible print that total loss of principal is another side effect of transacting with Wall Street, has apparently been unable to participate in today's 175/75 L/S unwind which blew the REITs into the stratosphere and got Bob Pisani's panties in a bunch.

So, what do those Southerners do now that they have been on the verge of full blown bankruptcy for months if not years - why summon the National Guard of course.

Brilliantly, the county first cut the sheriff's budget, and only subsequently did it realize it would need to maintain this thing called order. From the AP:

The sheriff in Alabama's most populous county may call for the National Guard
to help maintain order, a spokesman said Tuesday, after a judge cleared
the way for cuts in the sheriff's budget and hopes dimmed for a quick
end to a budget crisis.

About 1,000 county workers already are on unpaid leave because courts
threw out a key county tax, and Hale has warned that reductions to his
budget would mean fewer patrols by deputies and decreased courthouse
security.

A spokesman for Hale, Randy Christian, said the sheriff told Gov. Bob Riley after the ruling that state assistance may be needed to perform basic law enforcement tasks once the department's current funding is exhausted in early September.

"We will certainly be looking at calling in the National Guard," said Christian.

Hale may have to cut as many as 188 deputies and almost 300 civilian
workers out of more than 700 employees total because of Boohaker's
ruling, Christian said. That would leave just enough workers to staff
the county's two jails, which hold about 1,000 prisoners on average.

Ok, but what happens when the National Guard goes bankrupt in a few months once every other county realizes it needs it too? Can they call in the Goldman reservists? Do these stupid mayors understand that Goldman reservists do not like to be paid with IOUs?

Once Joe Sixpack is busy fending off the vigilantes (real ones, not the bond variety) and has no time to heatmap his daily quota of REITs, the real question becomes what HAL9000 will do once it has no more retail players left to frontrun...

I guess when the National Guard goes broke they can call in Blackwater.

Oh wait -- Erik Prince got implicated with murder yesterday in Virginia court for killing Federal witnesses.  Maybe they can call in Triple Canopy instead.

Holy crap, I hadn't heard about that. I'll bet nothing comes of it.

If you have money/power/friends, this country has been effectively lawless for at least 8 years.

It's really sad to me as an American. Law and order and a the commitment to actually pursue justice was one of the most powerful things we had. Now *poof*.

Can you torture people? Sure.

Can you scoop up a US citizen on US soil and hold him indefinitely without trial as an "enemy combatant"? Sure.

Can you pressure the justice department to pursue political prosecutions, then fire the DAs who don't comply? Sure.

Can you take billions from the taxpayer to solve the very problems you helped create and turn around and use it to hand out bonuses and rip the taxpayer off? Absolutely.

Will anyone, even after it's found out, even after everyone admits that it was wrong and illegal, will anyone come after you and try to make you face justice? Nope.

If I had the means, it would be mighty tempting to be an criminal oligarch right now. Why the hell not? Who's going to get me? The Justice Department? Financial regulatators? If I break the law to the tune of multiple billion will they fine me $33 million?

I'm sad for my country.

If you were an unscrupulous person with a bit of money and power to leverage, why WOULDN'T you be a criminal right now?

seems like maybe that's exactly right, a sort of inverse reading of the old line that goes something like this:

if you owe the bank a grand and can't pay, you've got a problem, but if you owe them a billion and can't pay, it's the bank who has the problem.

Today if a nobody like myself would steal thousands the hammer would come down, hard and fast, but if i'm one of the TBTF boys and make it billions, i get a bailout  Sigh...

Ever since Sarbanes-Oxley was enacted, it was completely ripped as being so terrible (yes expensive and difficult paperwork) but truly, it is a key way of correcting much of what the TBTF have done wrong--yet, instead of invoking it's power to call in the players, they are offered martinis and wonderful comfy chairs when they are called in to testify before Congress--what i don't understand is where are the lawyers that could represent the people of the United States against the leaders of these bailed out and failed firms that are now gaming and taking full advantage of their monopoly like (cartel) power?

SO TRUE! I have been especially bothered by these nickle and dime "hand slap" fees imposed by the SEC towards these firms that have committed FRAUD against the American Taxpayer!!

GE, Bank of America, WHERE DOES IT END!! Does Mary Shapiro really think these FEES constitute bringing these firms to any sembelence of JUSTICE????

We want jail sentences Mary Shapiro!!

small fines (like say 1% of the amount which caused the fine to be levied) with no admission of liability do not serve as deterrent. loss of freedom or more (seizure of assets as but one example) is the ONLY deterrent which will ultimately prove effective. unfortunately, we have the fox guarding the hen house so we get token fines, show trials, etc.

$4billion in debt, population of 660,000. They need to collect $11,000 per year per househould to just to make the interest payments.  They've even considered charging people who only use the water system for the sewer system also.  Down here they are two separate bills.

660,000 / 4 = 165,000 households
$4 Billion @ 5% annual interest = $200 million
$200M / 165,000 = $1,212 per household

Not that 'bamers need advice from me on the preferred method of armament for maintaining order and security of one's property, but tactical shotguns are TEH AWESOME in these situations.  Just don't stuff it with slugs -- the recoil takes away from your ability to deliver your justice rapidly and accurately, despite the soda-can size holes they make.

I live in Birmingham but am quick to point out that I am not from here. The place is basically a disaster. It takes an average of four hours to get through line at the DMV. Our mayor is on the way to prison. It's too hot to even think about going outside (which has nothing to do with the topic). And despite being bankrupt, the only real initiative taken in the past few years is to try and get the Olympics. Yep, Beijing, London, and Birmingham...makes a ton of sense. - http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/06/olympic_games_in_birmingham_ma.html

hey cheeky,

if you remember the serbian war when the united states stuck its nose in someone else's business as usual and began bombing serbia back into the stone age? well the main question i have now, is what have they done about the depleted uranium cleanup? anything? it is my understanding that it cannot be cleaned up. is that correct? i forget how many tons of that crap the united states dropped in and around serbia. it is a severe toxin and a environmental disaster and the du dust gets in the air and can be breathed into the body. there is no known antidote for it nor is there way of safely working around it, once it is used. even while it is sitting somewhere it is dangerous. the idea that it is depleted means nothing. on all of our tanks, they use this stuff and there is writing in large letters inside the crew cabs that one must not stay in the tank longer than a few hours at a time. etc.....
just thought you might have something to say about it or have heard something on it.

yeah i remember, but they wanted to take down Milosevic and secure that Kosovo gains independence ... that was a terrible fail, especially with Rugova's policy at the time ... i don't think the used depleted uranium because their targets where in Belgrade ( urban area ) and not in some remote parts of the country ... also, Serbian National Television made up some crazy ass shit back then, they were claiming that the US would drop an atomic bomb on Belgrade, and shit like that ... And Clinton did it just because he was faced with Srebrenica and the tainted image the UN gained in the region and he did not want to go out from the White House as a man who did nothing to capture the largest European mass murderer since Hitler. I also remember that Madeleine Albright was pissed as hell during the whole Clinton's 2nd term because he failed the first time. But not to go far from your question, the whole story of depleted uranium is pure BS that came from Milosevic controled Serbian National Television, and was then picked up by BBC who aired the story all over the world.

but is it constitutional for the united states to be running around getting involved in other people's affairs? kosovo is serbian land isn't it? kosovo to the serbs is like jerusalem is to the jews. they will never let it go. never. if i had my choice between clinton and bush on the amount of damage scale, i would have to go with clinton because he seemed much less motivated to get involved in wars , etc. do you remember when the nato commanding general at the time, george wesley clark, a pinhead from arkansas i might add, told the british troops to go to pristina airport and hold it and keep it away from the russians who were headed in that direction? the british general, jackson , told wesley clark to go get fucked....ha ha ha ......

ROFL .... don't talk about the unconstitutional nature of that little war when you have Iraq, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, Iran, Panama, Ecuador, Contra, Cuba etc ... and the Brits did what they had to do, and that was to protect Serbian integrity and guess why; the Serbian prince is the 3rd or 4th cousin if Queen Elizabeth ... Yes Kosovo is Serbian, and it was a mistake made by the international community to allow it to become a sovereign state, but please do not base you argument on the unconstitutional grounds ...

well several wrongs don't make a right. what did washington say in his farewell speech when he left the presidency in 1796. do not get mixed up in international situations or something to that effect. we just don't listen do we? my point cheeky is that none of these wars are, or were constitutional. none of them. which is one of our big problems right now, if you will notice. last week they oked another 600B for military spending. that is the largest part of a trillion dollars to be spent on war at a time when our country is broke. no relief in sight either. the reason why kosovo is serbian land has to do with that battle a long time ago, they fought there against the moslem hordes under i believe saladin , was it not, who won the battle and God knows what happened after that, so serbian blood is mixed in that soil from long ago. also the reason why there were no serbs in that area, that allowed foreigners to come in and become squatters, is that the area for the most part was depopulated by the germans, during world war 2, who sent the serbians to slave labor camps where they died in droves. the croats helped the nazis if i am not mistaken, perhaps for their own selfish goals whatever that was at the time.

constitutionally they were and are unconstitutional yes; and it is pure insanity to spend 600  bil on the military ... and yes Kosovo is Serbian and it always was; and it was Tito who populated Kosovo with Albanians after WWII ended, but my friend you are wrong about one thing; those who helped the Nazis were not born in Croatia, a small percentage of them were but mostly they came from the Diaspora or from Herzegovina and not with in Croatia. If you want Google Pavelic, Black Legion etc ... and the people who were born in Croatia were in Partisans and were anti-fascist and they had finally won the war after they consolidated their forces and change their strategy from full guerrilla warfare to partially guerrilla and partially urban ... Most of Nazi supporters emigrated to Argentina, Spain and Chile because those were authoritarian regimes ideologically similar to the one they were in charged of in Croatia.

ok cheeky, how do you explain this? The SS had croation units, in it, did it not? I know you said you were part german and I am not trying to put you on the spot about this stuff. it is strictly a historical discussion and since you live there, i thought i might run some things by you and get a local flavor for it all. and be sure you understand. i am not trying to pick a fight with you about anything, but merely discussing various things. i appreciate the give and take and i appreciate TD putting up with me around here. I have of course told him that before. by the way if you notice in that picture of those guys holding those mausers k98's. those weapons make excellent weapons. the germans always knew how to make good guns......we can still get them here in the states from time to time...

no no no ! i don't live in Croatia,I'm just on a vacation here cause i have a house near Zadar. My hometown is Geneve and that is where i spend most of my year . And yes,you are absolutely right about SS having Croatian Units. But SS also formed units from local population in every country Germany conquered during the war. It was sort of psychological/logistical game they did to insure co-operation with local population, and to smoothly implement German ideology trough locals. You had those units in Norway,Netherlands,France etc.And besides the SS also believed that those people were either untrained or ideological un-suitable to fight for Germany's best interest.

Depleted uranium is used only in anti tank combat and to penetrate bunkers, not in bombs. When Bush Sr put arms embargo on Balkans in 91 it was Croatian Police against fully armed Serbian army. When croatian and bosnian forces joined toghether to fight serbians in 95, Clinton stoped Croatian army and with that total anihilation of Serbs forces. If he did not do that there would be no need for intervention in Kosovo and bosnia, and criminals would get what they deserved. But now, bosnia is still on the edge, thanks to Clinton.

I hate to disagree with you guys but you are wrong. we used tons of depleted uranium in the serbian conflict. tons of it. i have read about this for a very long time. once this stuff is used, what is done, cannot be undone. now for the next 4.5 billion years, which the half life of depleted uranium, the areas where these munitions were used will be uninhabitable, which is what we have done to iraq and are now doing to afghanistan. these weapons were manufactured for one purpose, that was to stop overwhelming soviet armor attacks in europe, if it ever happened, and there were no other options. they have let the genie out of the bottle on this one. now the dust from the wars in the middle east is slowly making its way around the world. it is in britain now and it has shown up in texas in the states i believe. this is some very serious shit and cannot be discounted. i wish i could be positive about it, but i am afraid, that i cannot........it causes cancers, birth defects, shortens life, etc etc.........if i were you guys i would seriously check this out since some of you may live in those areas. even here in the states, wherever this crap was used in target runs with a10 warthogs or whatever (which use the 20mm variety of du round), there is serious environmental damage that cannot be repaired. also there is severe damage to my understanding at the plant, where they manufacture this crap, in michigan, if i am not mistaken. maybe someone else can chime in on this and correct me if i am wrong....

also cheeky for what its worth. i am sure you have heard of gulf war sickness. so far, over 15000 men who participated in the first gulf war in 1990, are dead from this and they say they are not sure what is causing it. also another 500,000 are sick. i suggest if not wholely the reason for this sickness is depleted uranium exposure or radiation poisoning. the bad part about it, is that when the soldier comes home, he may or may not know he has it. then he has sex with his wife and he gives it to her. it is transferable by sex. no doubt about it. so now they have children and all of these horrible deformities start showing up in their children and then the man gets sick after a while. i am afraid, many of the men who have fought in iraq have this now and don't even know it. we have turned the nation of iraq into a nuclear waste dump. this is our contribution to humanity and for this i am very sorry and wish i could turn back the clock for these poor people over there who never did anything to us, never. i am ashamed to be an american. ashamed on so many levels.

of course i have heard about gulf war sickness. you do not have to feel shame for being an American. It is clearly visible from your comments that you do not support the actions taken by your government. Your trust or distrust in your government does not mean you not like your country, dammit,I'm European and i think the founding standards of the USA described in the US constitution form the greatest country on the planet, but perversion and breaking of those rules and guidelines by present and former governments morphed the country into some unrecognizable military and political behemoth with a thirst for world domination. Most of my beliefs are drawn from the American culture, and may i remind you once again that I'm a full blood European. But the people of this once great nation need to take the power, that was taken from them, back and re-establish America on the principles which were written down by the Founding Fathers ...

actually you are wrong. the most bombarded areas of Belgrade are heavily populated today and some of those areas have been converted to Parks and playgrounds ... Special units came after the bombing was over to establish the size of the damage it was done, and they concluded that there was no environmental or human danger whatsoever ... and those people were from Russian institutes, so i don't think they lied ... and even post-Milosevic reports claimed that there was no signs or traces of uranium, mainly because European countries who were a members of NATO and the UN were strongly opposed of using uranium on European soil ...

if i am not mistaken , here is the final report on this.

http://postconflict.unep.ch/publications/duserbiamont.pdf

i can tell you this report is bullshit but what do we expect from the governmental agencies. if they told the truth, there would be panic there in serbia and elsewhere. the thing is that this stuff, once it is used, cannot be cleaned up. it is impossible to clean up. once it is used it turns into uranium oxide, a gaseous form of uranium that burns on impact and cuts through armor like butter. but then it cools and turns to dust and blows around all over the place. it simply cannot be safely cleaned up. there is no known way for any cleanup workers to filter out the dust while they are working with it.

this can be found by talking to doctor Doug Rokke who while in a state of ignorance on the subject, and who being the good soldier that he was, took the job of du clean up in iraq seriously until he got sick from being around it. then he started digging on what was really going on and found out he was used as a chump by the army ......

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article3551.htm

i used to read this kind of stuff all the time, mainly because i wanted to know such things, but the last few years, i have been taking up my time, reading and studying on this financial situation we find ourselves in. when you told me you lived in the balkins, i remembered things i had read years ago on all of this stuff. oh well, back to finance.
