Via WSJ:

A massive fire engulfed one of Beijing's biggest new buildings, apparently destroying the tower, which is part of the soon-to-be completed headquarters complex of China's national television broadcaster.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the inferno, which took place as residents of the Chinese capital set off fireworks across the city to celebrate the last day of the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year festival.

Flames and occasional explosions poured from the top of the tower, which sits just to the north of the main China Central Television building, an angular two legged glass tower that has quickly become an icon of Olympics-era Beijing. There was no initial indication of damage to that main CCTV tower.

The building, which appeared to be completely destroyed by the flames, was set to house the flagship hotel in China of Mandarin Oriental International Ltd., an Asian luxury chain. The hotel was scheduled to open this year, according to the company's Web site.
