Bono Tells Greeks Not to Despair
A
couple of weeks ago, U2 performed in front of more than 100,000 fans at
the Olympic stadium in Athens. My sister, my brother-in-law, family and
friends all attended the concert but I had yet to arrive in Greece, so I
missed my favorite band.
It seems some Greeks were peeved off with some comments Bono made
regarding the Greek and Irish economy. I don't know why, his comments
were straightforward and he told Greeks not to despair (see below). I
did take issue with him comparing himself to Alexander "the M-F" Great
and the fact that U2 didn't play some classics like "Bad", "Who's Gonna
Ride Your Wild Horses" and "All I Want is You".
I will have to wait till July
11th, 2011 when U2 rolls into Montreal. Wonder who Bono will compare
himself to then. :)

In four piece bands, the musicianship has to be excellent. U2 would qualify in my mind as excellent, but I think Bono is the weak link in that band. Other great 4 piece bands are the Doors (Bono doesn't rank with Morrison), the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath.
The entire discography of U2 couldn't hold itself up against one Clash LP, let alone The Beatles.

agree TF. followed them since 1983 and in my advancing age they are the best live band I've seen. I don't begrudge them making $. At least they have a viewpoint and are willing to work for it. Definitely better than banksters and other financial charlatans.

I was in a private opium den in Bangkok and someone put Dark Side in the cd player. There were about 20 of us from all parts of the world, and each guy had one or two beautiful Thai women at their side.
It was one of the best evenings of my adult life, and Dark Side will forever be etched in my brain.
THAT sounds like a good scene. I didn't know anyone smoked opium any more, outside of a few old-timers up in hill trek country to the North. Care to impart the name/whereabouts of that particular establishment? Kind of a Karaoke scene?

This week, an IMF commission is in Greece to look over the books. There seems to be no concern in international markets.
His summary of the degree of mismanagement and universal corruption leaves the reader stunned.
The national railroad system generates revenues of 100 million euros. Its wage bill is 400 million, plus 300 million in other expenses. The average railway employee earns 65,000 euros a year.
The public school system is among the worst in Europe, but it employs four times as many teachers per student as Finland, the nation with the best system.
Then there is retirement. For arduous occupations, the retirement age is 55 for men; it is 50 for women. "As this is also the moment when the state begins to shovel out generous pensions, more than 600 Greek professions somehow managed to get themselves classified as arduous: hairdressers, radio announcers, waiters, musicians, and on and on and on."
Then there is the tax collection system. Almost no self-employed worker pays income taxes. Physicians accept cash only. Two-thirds of them report only 12,000 euros per year, on which no taxes are owed. One whistle-blower told Lewis that if the law were enforced, every physician in Greece would go to jail.

U2 Corp relocated offshore some years ago now, in order to avoid taxes. No doubt the great man is donating all the tax he would have paid to some deserving cause.
