BP Suspends "Top Kill" For Second Time After Trying Two Junk Shots. Less Than 10% of Injection Fluids are Staying Inside the Leaking Pipes

George Washington's picture

Washington’s
Blog

As I reported
yesterday, the "Top Kill" attempt to stop the oil flow using mud had
failed, and BP would now try to use a "junk shot" to close the leaks in
the pipe using various debris.

The New York Times is now reporting
that the junk shot approach is not going well:

The
company [again] suspended pumping operations at 2:30 a.m. Friday after
two “junk shot” attempts, said the technician, who spoke on the
condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly
about the efforts.

"The suspension of the effort was not announced, and appeared to again
contradict statements by company and government officials that suggested
the top kill procedure was progressing Friday."

***

The technician working on the
effort said that despite the injections at various pressure levels,
engineers had been able to keep less than 10 percent of the injection
fluids inside the stack of pipes above the well. He said that was
barely an improvement on Wednesday’s results when the operation
began....

“I won’t say progress was zero, but I don’t know if we
can round up enough mud to make it work,” said the technician.
“Everyone is disappointed at this time.”

Update: It appears that BP is starting preparations for its next fix-it scheme.

As
FT's oil spill blog reports:

The
ROVs are definitely up to something:

Update: LMRP 3.28pm
BST (10.28am EDT; 9.28am CDT)

A couple of TOD commenters believe
some of the recent footage shows the Lower Marine Riser Package, which
BP says it is preparing in parallel with the top kill efforts. One
points out that the camera in the screen shot below seems to say LMRP
(see text at the centre).

As BP explains
today:

In
parallel with the ongoing top kill operation, preparations have been
made for the possible deployment of the lower marine riser package
(LMRP) cap containment system.

Deployment would first involve
removing the damaged riser from the top of the failed BOP to leave a
cleanly-cut pipe at the top of the BOP's LMRP. The cap, a containment
device with a sealing grommet, will be connected to a riser from the
Discoverer Enterprise drillship, 5,000 feet above on the surface, and
placed over the LMRP with the intention of capturing most of the oil
and gas flowing from the well.

The LMRP cap is already deployed
alongside the BOP in readiness for potential deployment. If it is
decided to deploy this option, this would be expected to take some
three to four days.

In addition to these steps, planning is
being advanced for deploying, if necessary, a second BOP on top of the
original failed BOP.

Yeah, I tried to find it the same way with no luck.  Oh well, I know what I read but I am all for gossip and rumors also.  Along with ZH, I keep TMZ in my faves.

I am the originator of the "battleship" idea. I posted it on the Huffington Post soon after the rig sank. It was entirely intended as a joke. In my original version, I suggested taking the flight deck off the USS Ronald Reagan, turning it over, attaching hoses, and sinking the hull on top of the well. If successful, the hoses would be used to fill the inside of the hull with concrete. It was a joke. If they missed the well in the first attempt, I suggested they take flight deck off the USS George H.W. Bush, etc. and so on. In later versions I switched from concrete to Krazy Glue and Gorilla glue. The Admiral obviously knows how useless battleships are, and how expensive aircraft carriers are.

By a guy I forgot the name.

Good stuff man, thanks for the assist.  For some reason, pointing this out had me starting to get a few "junks".  That was the post I was referencing.

Where did the guy say it was a joke on the Oil Drum? Please provide link, and I will retract.

Yes, Geo. he said he was the father of the story in response to my new book on the dumbest oil well kill ideas.

1. Sinking battle ship

2. Liquid Nitrogen freeze

3. Giant Screw

3. Methane crystals

4. Lead sinkers

5. Mercury

6. Giant straw

7. Turn the well into a production well (really)

8. Nuclear weapons (giant stupid)

9. 100 tons of fast setting post cement

10. Nano bots (really, invent nano bots really)

As a long time member of TOD, working in high energy I found it fascinating how little people know of physics or even simple grade school science. So I have started a book of the dumb ideas like this.

The cover art will be the sinking battle ship with a nuclear handle as a screw driver for the giant gold plated (the gold is my idea with gov. involvement I thought it should be gold plated) screw.

GW,

It's true that it was originally posted as a joke. I read the guy's explanation on TOD. No link or inclination to find it...

Check your facts please and you should also provide links. Your own blog doesn't count.

I am still looking for it in the comments section; I have gone through 300+ comments 2x now and still can't find it.  Someone posted the rumor of sinking a ship on the leak and another poster responded shortly after claiming that he had intiated this rumor and that it was the Ronald Reagan that they were going to sink...he said it was a joke.

Sorry I can't be any more specific, I will keep looking.  Can you please explain why the latest info is from 230am?  EST?

The Ronald Reagan is a brand new super carrier, not a battleship.  Sinking a ship on top of the mess would not fix the problem, it would only make an even larger mess.

Humor is really hard to explain to about 33% of the population.  I guess that's why my Fish Gone Bad cartoons are only funny to 67% of the US population, but 100% of Australia and Chile's populations.

The salt water will cause engine ring wear. To combat it you have to use tungsten rings. You can purchase tungsten rings by buying the etf GLD.

+1000!

Facts from the oildrum...

The reservoir pressure is 13,000 psi. (Temperature only 180 F from one report, unusually cold). 4 weeks ago the pressure was reported as 8,000 to 9,000 psi entering the BOP and just seawater pressure (@ 2,200 psi) + 400 psi exiting the BOP. This implies much more than just a frictional drop up 13,000' of drill string, but some obstruction as well.

Not them, they only lose about a month or two of revenue.... the taxpayers eat the rest.

But down here in New Orleans? The effects are already being felt. Seafood prices are starting to rise and fishermen are starting to have trouble finding clean areas to catch. Given that this city lives off of tourism, offshore drilling and seafood collection, this summer will be a nightmare. What might be even worse is if we get a hurricane and all the oily water gets splashed all over the city.... FUN!

On the positive side CME's (coronal mass ejections from the sun) will be powerful and strong this summer since the solar cycle is already dying out .... who knows, maybe the oil slick will catch fire and the U.S. will have a lake of fire on it's coastline.... waiiiittttt..... isn't that out of the Bible or something? Hrmmm, let's hope Palin gets caught up with the holy spirit and accidently rips her blouse open... I've been wondering what those puppies look like.

Cheers.

And thanks for posting this GW.

I think you mean solar cycle is heating up, solar cycle 24 is at its beginning solar activity (started Dec 2007 expected peak Feb 2013) will be increasing over the next few years as we reach cycle 24 maximum of the suns 11 year cycle..
