BP "Worked Hand in Glove with [the Mubarak] Dictatorship"

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

As if there weren't enough reason to hate BP for trashing the Gulf, BP has apparently been supporting Egyptian dictator Mubarak as well.

As the Guardian notes:

BP
has been criticised by the non-governmental organisation Platform,
which claims the oil company had with other British and American oil
companies "worked hand in glove with dictatorship."

The environmental and social justice group also said Hesham Mekawi, the
BP Egypt chairman, has praised "the stability of the country" and
claimed BP had allowed the American Chamber of Commerce in Cairo - of
which it is a member - to put pressure on US Congress not to support a recent motion calling on Mubarak to hold fair elections and respect human rights.

***

BP
has made Egypt one of its top priorities after a major gas find in the
Nile Delta last summer. It hopes to more than double its oil and gas
production to over 320,000 barrels a day – almost a tenth of its global
output.

Why pick on BP. Just look at how Chevron is cooperating in Kazahgstan with their "President for life" and with the blessing of the CIA.  Idiology and reality  are not in sych---only in the minds of the naive. When it comes to oil, its all reality if you want to remain warm and cuddly

Why pick on BP?...because they are convenient...but it wasn't always so...LOL.

"BP, now under federal scrutiny because of its role in the deadly Gulf of Mexico explosion and oil spill, is one of three finalists for a federal award honoring offshore oil companies for "outstanding safety and pollution prevention."

The winner of the award - chosen before the April 20 oil rig incident - was to be announced this coming Monday at a luncheon in Houston. But the U.S. Department of Interior this week postponed the awards ceremony, saying it needs to devote its resources to the ongoing situation resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and fire."

Oily, ironic, inconvenient truths ;-)

Obama worked hand in glove with BP. He got more $$ than anyone from BP. In exchange, BP got environmental short cuts for permits and safety concerns. A verteran DC reporter was fired for just pointing that out Obama was their primary recipent. A clear warning to others a free press is not going to happen in America.

The Lockerbie bomber got an Obamapass to get out of Scottish jail in exchange for BP getting Libyan drilling concessions. And Soros got $2 billion of taxpayer stimulus money to drill in Brazil, while the Obama administration is in contempt of court right now for re-imposing the illegal moratorium on Gulf drillling. Oil is not evil, manipulation of the global warming fraud by the hypocrites is evil.

Obama's marxist supporters are on the ground in Cairo working with the Muslim Brotherhood fomenting the riots Alinsky style. They are even asking for American donations from their fellow travelers on their website. Where were all their cries for democracy for the uprising in Iran?

Where is the article discussing CNN working hand in glove with Saddam Hussein for years and not reporting the atrocities that occurred there?  Oh, wait, CNN (like Goldman Sack's) must've been doing "God's work."

If we're going to go all PC with BP then let's apply it to the US Govt too. Not only does it ignore the biggest financial frauds in global history (Wall Street) and give them money to keep going but works across the world with dictatorships and extremist groups to usurp democratically elected Govts not to mention false and illegal wars itself in country after country.

That was a long sentence of 'PC' wasn't it?

In defense of BP there aren't many petroleum endowed countries with political structures that resemble Seattle's.

You'll recall that charging into a country in that part of the world with the intent of replacing a thug dictator with consensual governance doesn't exactly win you horseshoe bouquets of praise from the NGO do-gooder crowd either.

I mean, what do these people want? Sanctions obviously don't work very well and often hurt the most vulnerable hardest.  Regime changing missionary wars are a no-no - that's imperialism.  But doing business with evil autocrats isn't cool and of course we must always be respectful of unique and charming indigenous folkways and social structures no matter how barbaric or antagonistic to rudimentary standards of human rights they may be...

I see she believes in segregation over there...not enough brown skin's writing on the front page apparently...so she set up their own little sections.

The dictators use either military or warped religious standards to control the people - the people are not fooled however.

Explosion at Israel-Egypt Gas Pipeline, State TV Says

"CAIRO (Reuters) - Saboteurs blew up a pipeline that runs through Egypt's North Sinai and supplies gas to Israel, state television and other sources reported on Saturday.

State TV quoted an official as saying that the "situation is very dangerous and explosions were continuing from one spot to another" along the pipeline.

"It is a big terrorist operation," a state TV reporter said.

A security source said the Egyptian army closed the main source of gas supplying the pipeline.

"The armed forces and the authorities managed to close the main source of flow and are trying to control the fires," the source said.

Israel's National Infrastructure Ministry said it was looking into the incident."

"Israel imports 40 percent of its natural gas from Egypt, in a deal built on their 1979 peace accord."

Mosaddegh was Iran's leader at the time and was ousted by the CIA, even though he had overwhelming support of the people. His downfall was that he nationalized the oil industry and had rejected a 50-50 split in profits with the oil company.  In 1947, for example, AIOC (later to become BP) reported after-tax profits of £40 million and gave Iran just £7 million. He wanted those oil profits to go back into his Iran's economy.

So the U.S. ousted another democratically elected leader, and put a dictator in power ( the Shah) .  The Shah abused his powers and became a very wealthy man. The Shah reversed the policy and was basically a puppet for western powers for decades until he was ousted in 1979. The uprising and hostage crisis was blowback caused by decades of U.S. interference.  And we wonder why Iran doesn't trust us.  This has happened over and over in Africa, Asia, Central and South America.

Exactly, Rick! And not just oil:

The anti-gold trolls here like to bash Jim Sinclair but he consulted in the revision of the Tanzania government mining royalty laws -- the key revision being that the royalty to the gov is now gross rather than net.  Under the "net" Barrick paid them almost nothing -- one of the "costs" netted out was their hedge book!  Those forward sales to the bullion banks were how they delivered into the gold sold short or "leased."

BP worked hand in glove with dictatorship?? The entire oil industry runs on corruption and the pilferring of assets from africa etc.

The United States has a long history of supporting dictatorship if it keeps the crude flowing through suez. It's highly ironic that the U.S. is trying to promote 'democracy' to a country destroyed by inflation, unemployment and corruption.

All of the things that are gutting the States and making it a sham country.

There is a dictator who dictates that oil sucks and gas makes you baloon up. His name is  Chavez and he's doing every thing in his power to make Venezuela, potentially the biggest land of honey and money, go dry from his brand of maccho economics. Even Castro was wiser as he had no oil to tout about. All he had was hot air to shout about.

ummmm...

Bank grows stock of appropriate psychopaths for public and private service roles, Bank puts one of these into power as dictator, bank client psychopath is getting his/her rocks off as well, bank puts bank's corps in country to rape and pillage, dictator sucks at bank's largesse from rape and pillage, bank eyes plan and foments rebellion, dictator gets shortened or escapes into exile, etc, etc.

Right now the washer is on Rinse cycle.

Thanks. I now have a picture of Barney Frank, obese, sweaty and lisping; Chris Dodd, with pubic hair gone white as well, no pigmentation whatsoever; and Chuck Schumer, hair plugs askew, reading glasses perched on the end of his nose; all of them completely naked, standing in a circle, feverishly yanking on their unresponsive junk.

And a little vomit just came up in the back of my throat.

Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Vladimir Putin used a Russian proverb to explain why he’s granting BP Plc access to 125,000 square kilometers (48,000 square miles) of Arctic water: the man who’s been beaten is worth two who haven’t.

The Russian prime minister is betting that BP has learned from the trauma of last year’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill and won’t repeat the same mistake. The Jan. 14 meeting with Chief Executive Officer Bob Dudley in a ceremonial room at Putin’s country retreat sealed an agreement to swap BP shares for a holding in OAO Rosneft, Russia’s largest oil producer.

The summit ended negotiations that started when Dudley’s ill-fated predecessor Tony Hayward visited Russia to seek support as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill threatened to destroy the London-based company. Talks gained pace after Dudley took the helm at the start of October, and over hundreds of meetings the agreement that puts BP at the centre of Russian oil exploration took shape, people involved in the deal said.

“This gives us an important leg in Russia’s oil growth for the next decades,” said David Peattie, BP’s head of Russia. “It’s one of the last remaining very prospective basins of planet, one that a company the size of BP is able to bring a lot to. We have a track record of opening basins.”

The exchange of a 5 percent stake in BP for a 9.5 percent holding in Russia’s biggest oil producer is the first of its kind between a state-owned company and an international oil producer. BP and Rosneft will search for oil in the Kara Sea off Russia’s north coast.
