Breakout or Fakeout???

RobotTrader's picture

Navigating today's market is akin to trying to juggle 3 bi-polar psycho girlfriends at the same time.  Wild mood swings and total unpredictability is making many traders head spin.  No doubt, Goldman is engineering a plethora of "shakeouts" and "fakeouts" to burn its biggest clients who have outsized positions in various stocks or sectors.

These have taken off, as if they just received a casting call from James Cameron....

Meanwhile, anyone who shorted crude oil got creamed.....

Biggest mover today was Ann Taylor...

Meanwhile some of the former high flying Nasdaq hookers are still recovering in rehab.  Hard to believe that the market will get very far without these:

"Sell All Rallies!!"

And despite the unemployed consumer and the outright implosion in housing, mattress companies are making 52-week highs...

LOL....

Next group to watch is the OIH, which didn't exactly bust a move today with oil up so much.

And of course, the much favored REIT's, which remains the most favored "safe haven" sector for most investors.

Fakeout or Breakout??

Andy....Leo gets junked alot because he has acted like a 4 yr old seeking attention through negative behavior and has been taunting in his behavior towards others in the ZH community.  Leo is also an illogical phuckhead who has made an ass of himself.  His blog consists of massive cut and pastes with a couple of lines that he writes.

You blew it telling me I was "wrong" the other day Leo.  It is impossible to predict the future yet you continue to insist that you can do it and that is the reason people junk you....you're a phucking moron Leo.

well stated 215512....

as I said yesterday and referred to today in my above post, nobody can predict the future and those with such certainty are a dangerous, illogical type.  Frankly, I could care less what Leo does with his money but he is actively and persistently advising people via Zero Hedge to buy securities, long only, and with utmost certainty. I have chosen to call him out for his stupidity and hope that others that read ZH and come across Leo's one sided ramblings have access to the counter position that the US equity markets are far from being predictable.

With that, I will choose now to disengage from any further discussion with Leo or about him.  He is simply not worth the time of day predicated on his recent behavior.

Who said I am certain about the future? I put my money where my mouth is and you can go on "trading for a living". That's the problem with traders, they can't see far enough and they don't get the whole macro picture. Liquidity rally is still strong. Like it or not, markets will grind higher in 2010. That's my call and I am accumulating solar shares every time they get whacked 30% or more. It doesn't mean you have to do what I do, but at least you know where my money is which is more than I can say for you finger in the air type of guys!

As for my blog, I have over 600 people from all around the world reading it every day, including the biggest pension funds, hedge funds and private equity funds. Not bad for a "cut and paste" guy. Must be doing something right to keep them coming back.

Jim Cramer has quite a few viewers too.  Having said that I think we need different views and I dont have to agree with it to read it. I think you have made some logical points, but I am not so sure about the liquidity rally still being strong.

That guy told everybody NOT to buy Friday, and now look what his "home gamers" missed out on.

Robo, you have my favorite column.

Leo, poor fella, if you say anything outside concensus here, some idiot will flag your posts as junk every time.
Especially if it's against gold, or sometimes if against Republican candidates.

Best post I've seen all week--I love this site!!  Can't get a handle on crude though; is it over-supplied and therefore should keep coming down or is there a squeeze on forcing prices up?

great question - i wish i knew the answer.

demand is falling from 85mb to ... 83(or so, maybe less). supply is falling from 85mb to ... 83??

its hard to say. my guess is that supply is falling slightly faster than demand. but looking at the global economy, i would think demand would start to outpace supply failure.

this is a bizarre market. all the second derivatives are negative. we're looking at decline curves - and none of the models make sense any more. it has become nearly impossible to value the refiners.

i'm guessing oil falls back down to 60 or so - at least in the short term.  but some argue that the depletion curves are steeper than the producers care to admit - and there's evidence to support that claim.

if the oil majors made investments necessary to harvest heavy oil, then the price of oil could fall dramatically - as it would be determined by anyone owning a serious unconventional technology and having access to serious fields (Alberta, Venzuela).  But capital is terrified of this space - they've been crushed before. so there's no long term capital investment.

one thing is fo shizzle - the conventional oilfields are in serious and terminal decline. there's a lot of hype about giant new fields below paris, and 'abiotic' oil beneath haiti, and other unicorn fairy tails - 99% is BS - and keeps capital away from unconventionals.

so, you're probably right about short term price declines. but watch out for government subsidy on the demand side. if the supply curve falls faster than the demand curve, you get serious price increases - which is maybe what the majors need to go after the tar sands in earnest.
