Bring on the Baseball Bat

RobotTrader's picture

Not much happening in the equity markets today, other than the huge roller coaster ride in Toyota shares, as this gangster "LaHood" attempted to smash the company's shares.  Meanwhile, investors today were de-risking and fleeing to the safety of the dollar and REIT stocks today.

I wonder what Mr. Toyoda is feeling like.  Perhaps he should enlist a tough guy to swing a baseball bat against that crook LaHood attempting to get a bear raid going on his stock.

Elsewhere, investors were watching the dollar climb to new highs again and seeking shelter in Jones Lang LaSalle today...

And with gasoline prices up again today, the unemployed consumer is rushing to buy more recreational vehicles...The bigger the better.

Why not?  They haven't made a payment on their mortgage in 9 months, and an RV payment is cheaper than a McMansion payment.

Not much else to do but wait and see if Portugal, Greece, et al are bailed out or simply left to crash and burn...

Meanwhile, since we had another down day, might as well grease up the "2nd half recovery" hope machine and start nibbling on GOOG...

LOL...

I couldn't see that either.  Maybe there are some super-secret REITs I don't know about.

Beyond that, given the decaying state of commercial RE, where exactly is the safety in REITs?  I'm serious, my logical brain can't see figure it out.  Someone please explain.

Thanks Robo.  Is it me, or do the G's on Google seem larger than the other letters?  I think Pale Rider wielded hickory ax handles...even he knows that baseball is rigged.  The gal with the 20's just traded in her gold jewelry for c-a-s-h!

If P & G are left on their own, might it become a model for our own plight?  A microcosm for sure, but a dress-rehearsal nonetheless.

Here's one for the record books:

this is probably the biggest recall ever, and several major lawsuits. a CHP officer and his family died in SD when their Lexus accelerated. They were doing over a 100 when they crashed. If I had a Toyota I wouldn't drive it, if I had the stock, well I wouldn't

Suicide or scam gone wrong.  If you WANT to slow down, you can always press on the break.  The phone call kinda reminds me of the balloon boy parents.

yikes, we agree, I thought same thing, especially given it was a CHP officer, who had to know about said issue and what you should do with stuck accelerator (hitting brakes with both feet and shift car into nuetral).

I have heard of short crashes, like something happening right in front of building, through crowd on sidewalk, within a garage, when anyone could lose control of car for a few seconds and crash if gas pedal stuck...but these are sudden situations, not like this one where cop drove way fast for several minutes...trained CHP officer that is going too fast for that long period of time on highway, can't he at least brake to slow car, let alone get car into nuetral?

The Lexus was a loaner and had a push-button starter switch which must be held for 3-seconds to turn the engine off. This isn't explained anywhere on the switch or in the owner's manual. The brakes were heavily damaged from trying to stop the runaway car. The auto transmission may not allow downshifts or shifts to neutral if it will cause the engine to over-rev. CHP report here:

I take it all back and have been corrected...thanks for the additional comments

also just heard a woman on the radio, she said she was driving in WI in a Toyota (a prius I believe) following he husband and others biking, she said she drove over some rough RR tracks and then the car accelerated suddenly...she said she braked, emergency braked, tried unsuccessfully to shift into neutral and tried to stop car by pushing P button, and none of this worked, she thinks the only reason the car stopped is because brakes melted/melded.

And so if the over-revving engine can't be switched to nuetral, why does Toyota tell people to do that when car is accelerating? And on turning off cars, if you have a key fob, and push button does not work...can you trhow the keys out of the car?

Definitely seems there is a system failure here...

You might want to check into that comment first - in many new vehicles, the electronic transmission prevents downshifting in this scenario. Denninger did a pretty decent article on this a couple of days ago. Recommend you check it out before bashing the dead and dismissing the CHP driver's death as more MSM propoganda - this scenario appears to highlight a real, serious issue with the auto.

On a very cold morning about 20 years ago my 280Z throttle stuck wide open.  I popped the transmission into neutral shut off the ignition, glided to a stop by the side of the road.  It's hard to believe that as trained driver a police officer wouldn't have the presence of mind to do one or both, something that I did automatically in less than 5 seconds.

If I had a Toyota I'd continue to drive it as usual, after removing the floor mats.  At some point this stock will be a huge buy, probably not yet.

From HuffPo, but still:

"Wall Street 'Fight Clubs' On The Rise"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/03/wall-street-fight-clubs-o_n_448...

While some Wall Streeters may be buying gunsfor protection, others are simply learning to kick ass.

As the sport of mixed martial arts grows in popularity across the country, apparently many in the finance world are not content to be simply spectators.

In a scene straight out of Fight Club, bankers and traders are said to be trading in their gelled-hair and Armani ties for black eyes and cut lips at gyms around the city.

Max McGarr, a gym program director and professional fighter, told Bloomberg News, "We get a lot of finance guys. It's a good release from their job. If you lost hundreds of thousands of dollars, it's good to come here and get it out."

Richard Byrne, chief executive officer of Deutsche Bank Securities, also endorses the rise in popularity of the brutal sport, saying, "It's a great stress reliever."

One banker, John Cholish, even converted the top floor of his duplex apartment into a training gym.

Governor Paterson is currently lobbying to make MMA legal in New York, believing that it would add millions of dollars to the state budget.

And though he's not a banker, there's at least one New York teacher who'd probably agree.

Funny thing, I drive a Toyota (low-end, no fancy electronics) that's unaffected by the problems and recall, and I didn't see anything too out-of-line about LaHood's comments at first.

My wife's first reaction, though, was, "Is there anything these guys won't say to justify the bailouts?"  On the one hand, if I were driving a car I couldn't manually shut off (I don't think I would, by the way) and it had a penchant for taking off on its own, I'd be going to get it fixed tout de suite.  On the other hand, it is interesting how "intemperate speech" or "I mis-spoke" seems to all go in the direction of the political objective...
