Busted: Pro-Mubarak Thugs Are Police Officers

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

It should surprise no one that some if not all of the violent pro-Mubarak forces are plain clothes police officers.

The Guardian notes:

Sharif Kouddous, a prolific Egyptian tweeter and blogger in Cairo, describes "a brutal and coordinated campaign of violence" by the Mubarak regime, in an article posted on Democracy Now's website:

"Suddenly,
rocks started falling out of the sky," said Ismail Naguib, a witness
at the scene. "Rocks were flying everywhere. Everywhere." Many people
were hit. Some were badly cut, others had arms and legs broken. The mob
then charged in; some rode on horseback and camels, trampling and
beating people. Groups of them gathered on rooftops around Tahrir and
continued to pelt people with rocks.

"It's a massacre," said
Selma al-Tarzi as the attack was ongoing. "They have knives, they are
throwing molotov bombs, they are burning the trees, they are throwing
stones at us ... this is not a demonstration anymore, this is war."

Some
of the attackers were caught. Their IDs showed them to be policemen
dressed in civilians clothes. Others appeared to be state sponsored
"baltagiya" (gangs) and government employees. "Instead of uniformed
guys trying to stop you from protesting. You've got non-uniformed guys
trying to stop you from protesting," Naguib said.

AP points out:

Supporters
of President Hosni Mubarak charged into Cairo's central square on
horses and camels brandishing whips while others rained firebombs from
rooftops in what appeared to be an orchestrated assault against
protesters trying to topple Egypt's leader of 30 years. Three people
died and 600 were injured.

The protesters accused
Mubarak's regime of unleashing a force of paid thugs and plainclothes
police to crush their unprecedented 9-day-old movement, a day after the
82-year-old president refused to step down. They showed off police ID
badges they said were wrested from their attackers. Some government
workers said their employers ordered them into the streets.

***

If
any of the violence is instigated by the government, it should stop
immediately," said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

CNN writes:

The
United States doesn't know the identity of "thugs" who attacked
anti-government protesters Wednesday in Egypt, but others have
identified them as "supporters of the government," U.S. State Department
spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters.

"This was clearly an attempt at intimidating the protesters," Crowley said.

And Al Jazeera reports:

Protesters
in Tahrir Square shows the Al Jazeera camera the ID cards of accused
plain clothed security (police ID) who came in earlier to create
chaos.

File 4816

This
is just like when the British police attacked the non-violent
protesters led by Gandhi, or the police in towns in the South of the
United States attacked the peaceful protesters led by Martin Luther
King, Jr.

Note: The police were also the ones doing most, if not all, of the looting. See this and this.

Nothing surer than the mention of Muslims somewhere in the world will bring out the racists, bigots and xenophobes. Boy were many of you conditioned by the powers that be during the Bush years war on terror. Now any ringing of the bell causes the dogs to salivate. Independt minds and rational thinking is gone. Now its rants and hate at teh first opportunity.

Interesting to see the economic decline of the US is matched by a cultural decline.

You really don't have a clue what's going on do you?

If you don't even know who the players in the game are how could you pick sides?

Racists like you didn't care enough to find out because they have brown skin.

There's two choices in this one, horrible and terrible. Just like Iran.

Why the fuck are these idiot humans always picking sides anyway?

The only time are are just two choices is if you're a computer chip where the gate is either open or closed, or you're a hopeless moron and the situation is either black or white.

Left or right? There's no other choice?

How about just stop for awhile and don't turn at all? Or maybe back up. Or learn to frickin' fly straight up? Or how about digging a hole and returning to the single value logic system that spawned such simplistic thought patterns.

Grow up America. Life isn't a goddamned basketball game. And it's not digital.

I think part of the problem is the confusion between Islamists and non Islamist Muslims. The MB website is quite interesting, those guys are slick in their use of the media and play for the long game. Hamas is an offshoot and if you go all the way back to '79 the MB influences can be observed.

And...the Muslim Brotherhood killed Sadat for making peace...the MB started with an Egyptian, al Banna who's daddy was a sheik.

Sadat took over from Nasser who was a brutal SOB...even by Arab standards.

Good post.  Yes the MB had so much love for Sadat making peace.  Hilarious how GW easily fell in to being a puppet to spread The AP, Guardian and Al Jezzera's propaganda.

Guilty, should be blaming the Canadians, Aussies, Swedes.... for blowing up our ships, planes and embassies.  Not to mention the Fort Hood shooting, the underwear bomber and faulty bomb in NYC.

Obama and every other so called leaders should really bud out and let the Egyptians resolve their issues. Mubarak just pretty much gave him the finger. If he really thinks Mubarak is going to leave the country in the middle of the night and fly to some third world country then he is utterly mistaken. The Egyptian people are proud people and even those who don't disagree with him would not want to see thier president humiliated like that.

I assume you meant "butt out", not bud out, but perhaps you're suggesting they light up and chill out?

In any event, I agree that we should butt out.  As in stop sending $2 billion a year to one side, the Mubarek side.  Then we can watch the Egyptians "resolve their issues".

The people are stuck in the middle.  But it's the middle of what they chose.  The follow sharia and live in a tribal culture that rewards the wielding of raw power.  Like a cargo cult they can act out the demonstations but they don't know why they are doing it.  They say they want freedom but will hand the country to the MB who will then use sharia  and their own tribal thugs to step on the citizen's necks all over again.  Freedom isn't free and it's also more expensive than just parrotting a 'demonstration'.

I watched AC360 tonight and toggled to Greta.  Greta talked about the Republican vote on the 1099 healthcare issue and interviewed a Republican Senator.  At that point I didn't even wait for Bill, who I already knew was in his studio, not in Cairo.

Let me know when Fox gets somebody on the ground.  Then I'll be happy to listen to their coverage.

gw, that wasn't my point and you know it. on your mubarak camel post you said the following:

"("Camel jockey" is a racist slur for Arabs used by Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and their ilk.)

In other words, people who get their news from Limbaugh, Coulter, Fox News and the like will see the pictures and decide that the entire Egyptian struggle for freedom can be written off as dusky Arabs fighting other dusky Arabs."

so you impugn the motives of american citizen fox viewers and rush listeners, and then link to al jazeera and the guardian to make a point in another post.

btw: camel jockey was a phrase i heard all through the 1960/70's when i was growing up, long before fox and rush. i can assure you they didn't invent the phrase.

Do NOT follow this link or you will be banned from the site!
