Call Congress TODAY To Ensure that New Food Safety Regulations Do Not Punish Small Farmers or Home Gardners

The Senate will likely vote tonight to limit debate on substitute amendments to the new food safety bill - S510.

While everyone is for food safety, it is important to remember that one size does not fit all.

Specifically, that most food safety problems are caused by the giant, industrial-size food producers, such as huge confined animal feeding operations and giant egg producers,

Any
version of S510 which penalizes small farms and ranches with onerous
regulations targeted to the food giants will stifle competition, and
drive many small independent food producers out of business.

Democrats Jon Tester of Montana and Kay Hagan
of North Carolina have proposed an amendment which would exempt from
the new regulation small farmers and food facilities with less than
$500,000 in annual sales that directly market to consumers in a
275-mile area.

Call your senator and support the Tester-Hagan amendment to S510.

Many
websites have also warned that S510 could - intentionally or
unintentionally - interfere with people's ability to grow food in their
own gardens. While I have seen no evidence of that (admittedly, I
haven't spent any time looking at the issue), people should also demand
that the language of S510 be clarified to explicitly exempt home
gardens.

I don't think that common sense claims any ideology, government, nor political affiliation.

Call it what they will -- it will prevail.

Do you know how much corn a silver quarter will buy?  Plenty.

You hit the secret, to the gardening-illiterate, is to grow heirloom varieties and save seed for next year (and beyond), and store them well.

We have a "farmers market" consisting of about three oldtimers that pull their trucks up to the courthouse a few times a week in the growing season and sell whatever they have ripening...they have done it for decades. We also have a newer generation of ex-urbanites opening up organic farms, directly selling a variety of fruits, veggies, dairy items and meats...I am sure the paperwork of bureaucracy will kill them all.

I have about 6 varieties of tomato seeds that I put away from last year's crop to start a new batch of plants in late winter.   I also start my onions, broccoli, and corn early in pots.

I have some cross-bred African Togo and Campbell's that will produce some very interesting tomatoes!

perennials, permaculture and a wide variety of edibles is definitely the way forward. The current food system is going to collapse under peak oil. Another reason they're seeking more control

And the chokehold on the populace tightens.

All your food,

All your energy,

and all of your property, are belong to us.

Any doubters out there, go read Zbignew Brezinski's book "The Grand Chessboard." It's all about control of all vital resources.

You seem to be of the belief that the democratically elected are to serve the constituents. You are wholly mistaken. It is, in fact, entirely the other way around.

Why does that guy keep getting elected anyway?  Lackluster opponents?  Or is it so much corporate money that he can drown his opposition in PR?

isn't that the real intent of this bill that was written by big agra business?

There was a time long ago when I would have said no. Now, I'd say that you are almost certainly correct. Bills are written by lobbyists and Congress is too stupid and inattentive to see the implications in advance.

FOOD GASTAPO!!!!

THIS IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL.

the ruling elite do not wish for anyone to go 'off the grid' and engage in barter.  they do not wish country folk to grow their own crops and trade with neighbors, perhaps using gold and silver and intermediate stores of value.

...disgusting.
