Chairman Of British Insurance Company RSA, John Napier, Attacks Obama Over BP Handling, Accuses President Of Hypocrisy

Tyler Durden's picture

The BP fiasco is promptly spiralling out of control, and risks to alienate perpetual US ally Great Britain. Sky News reports that it has obtained an "astonishing letter" from RSA Chairman and popular social figure, John Napier, in which the Brit goes all out on the US president. "Please forgive this open letter but your comments towards BP and its CEO as reported here are coming across as somewhat prejudicial and personal. There is no doubt that BP, as a UK PLC, is totally committed to do everything possible to contain the oil leak and meet all its obligations in the USA. There is a sense here that these attacks are being made because BP is British. If you compare the damage inflicted on the economies of the western world by polluted securities from the irresponsible, unchecked greed and avarice of leading USA international banks, there has not been the same personalised response in or from countries beyond the US. Perhaps a case of double standards?" At this point, absent some material backtracking by the president, which in turn would be seen as huge weakness domestically, an ecological disaster is set to become a diplomatic one as well.

More from the Napier letter to Obama as reported by Sky News:

He continues: The immediate issues are very challenging but are best solved working together in a more Statesman like way."

He ends the letter: "We can all agree that the first and absolute priority is to stem the leak.

"Perhaps the second one is to ensure the reputation of the Presidency outside the USA is seen as objective, balanced, able and capable of taking the heat when under pressure.

"We liked the Obama we saw at your election, can we have more of it please."

The letter follows another attack on the president over his BP comments by Mark Dampier, of the financial services company Hargreaves Lansdown.

Reffering to the fall in BP share prices Mr Dampier said: "Obama has his boot on the throat of British pensioners."

On the other hand, as we disclosed yesterday, it does not seem like a very prudent move to have $81 million of the Scottish Widows Investment Fund invested in BP. Perhaps, the UK would benefit from some diversification, and not succumb to the salesmany tricks employed by the same US investment banks that Mr. Napier now abhors. At the end of the day, should BP CDS continue rising higher above their current level in the 500s, all of this political rhetoric may soon be moot.

BP has brought this on themselves...seriously - what a fucking shitshow.

As for diplomatic incident.....pleeeeeease - its not as if we're talking about the British Army...its a billy-big-balls corporate - it should be able to take care of itself

plus - napier's point about subprime etc. is retarded....the UK housing market is a bigger bubble than the US and its securitization market is > $1trn - with tonnes of that shit in the US...

OK but remember who started it. The UK played catch up & given the national psyche had to have one too many...

Aside, the Brits were in to interest only, 100%ers & liar loans in the late eighties ..I think I had all three at the time. Not to mention teaser rates - the ARM equivalant.

It was the US that proudly re-engineered all these methinks Brit innovations and ultimately & fraudulently & in cahoots with the criminally negligent rating agencies, laid waste upon our old world.

Back on topic, the fact that Transocean barely gets a mention is just fucking sick. Obama, his lackeys and the whole corrupt system is so transparent....enuff. Thank you.

Reply from White House is SOP - Ignore the problem...

WASHINGTON (AFP)--The U.S. Thursday dismissed the idea that the BP PLC (BP) oil spill is causing diplomatic tension with the U.K.
"I don't see it as a source of tension," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told journalists. "BP is a private company and this is about the impact of the tragedy...not about the relations between the United States and its closest ally.

To look at these last sad months since Mr. Obama began occupying the White House I am given to two possible views:

1) He is overwhelmed and has lost control of the situation.

2) He is in control of the situation and it is progressing in a way which he considers desirable.

Given the well documented history of the man, his associations, his early writings, his stated beliefs, and the beliefs of those close to him and installed to power by him, I cannot help but think that choice (2) is correct.

I think that we find it so abominable that one with the title of President could do this, so terrible to contemplate the continuation of office of such a man, and so terrifying to consider how long it will take for him to be removed from office that it is easier to assume choice (1) above.  After all, mere incompetence is preferable to aggressive malevolence.

Mr. Obama will seek the destruction of BP in whatever fashion brings greatest benefit to his associates.  This will be used as a means of advancing energy price extremes the likes of which we've never seen.  He will do this, create a disaster, and then tell us that the government must a) be in charge of any future production b) regulate energy use since it's so environmentally hazardous.

It won't stop there.  He will seek the destruction of the armed forces; he will seek the destruction of the family; he will seek to destroy individual incentive, what little there is left.

To all who voted for him: you wanted it, you got it.  Enjoy deprivation.

- Bill

Enoch Powell, perhaps the last truly conservative British politician, once said that British foreign policy consists in figuring out what the Americans want, and doing it before being requested.

As to Napier's kabuki, it achieved its desired purpose, which is to create the illusion that there is accountability and that the major corps, banks and party machines are not joined in the hips. No scarcity of excitable suckers, inclusive here.

Mr. Napier please be assured that President Obama is not attacking BP because it is British. In fact BP should be hono[u]rd that the President has singled it out because usually he only goes after American companies that actually reduce the US’s current account deficit and pay lots of American taxes. He is attacking BP because it just feels good, damn it! He wants to kick some ass.

Oh and by the way, be careful about saying critical things. You sound like a fat cat and may be part of the problem, and the President’s got a big foot and he may be winding it up for another kick.

I'm British living in Canada (hence getting a lot of the US media) and  a BP shareholder to boot and I've been astonished at the crash "cheapshot" antics of Obama and co. what a wanker he's become I thought he had more dignity, but I guess I should've known better.

Who's asking questions about the role of the other parties in the spill?

what about the US agency's role?

what about the Administrations failure to take a greater role in clean up operations?

why did they turn down support from THIRTEEN other nations to help with the clean up?

I think the Whitehouse tactic is deflect as much directly onto BP,  and hope the public never catches on to the real complexity of the situation?

US politics; no wonder the country is fucked.

Agree.  Obama is crapping in his own bed.  The parallel to this is Three Mile Island.  The US gov't now has to accept all liability at existing reactors over a certain dollar value since no one will insure a nuclear power plant anymore.  So if Obama keeps up his antics, whose going to dare drill another well in the Gulf if the potential outcome is what is unfolding for BP?  So in ten years, there will be a bill in Congress for the US gov't to pick up the bill for liability over a certain $ value in the Gulf unless they are willing to watch this domestic supply disappear.

"If you compare the damage inflicted on the economies of the western world by polluted securities from the irresponsible, unchecked greed and avarice of leading USA international banks, there has not been the same personalised response in or from countries beyond the US.

Perhaps a case of double standards? Deep sea oil exploration was pushed forward as part of a USA oil security strategy as have a number of foreign policy initiatives in key areas in the world where we are standing shoulder to shoulder."

and

"The leak may take time to fix, and it will be, but Afghanistan and Iraq will take much longer."

If this gets any press in America at all the Brits are threatening to go public that the war in Iraq and Afghanistan were part of "USA Oil Security Strategy."  What "USA Oil Security Strategy?"  Can we have a copy of that document please?  Part of the still secret VP taskforce perhaps?  So the Brits are in effect saying seems we both have each other by the short hairs here mate do why don't we settle this like gentlemen.
