Chrysler November Sales Drop 25%, Below Expectations

Tyler Durden's picture

Chrysler's core Jeep brand sales were down 25% YoY. And even with such perks as:

  • 0 percent financing for up to 60 months
  • Consumer cash of up to $3,000
  • All-wheel drive at no cost with the purchase of a Chrysler 300
  • A no-cost DVD system with the purchase of a Chrysler Town & Country minivan
  • Attractive financing rates and a no-cost service/maintenance program for 3 years/36,000 miles

it appears Fiat's latest addition is on its way to extinction with just 63.5k sales in the month, a drop from 85.2k in November of 2008. Not even Steve Rattner could save Chrysler.

You have to adjust it for selling days, and then it's actually up vs. forecast.  The number is still abysmal, but the spin is wrong, Tyler.  Sorry mate.

Yes, let's just invent vehicle sales - which won't be deducted from any offsetting report.  I'm sure the dealers were so busy those days that buyers were tired of waiting in line and went home until next month.

Never would a Gov't sponsored entity do such a thing as adjust to invent numbers, anyway.

Ivanovich, you may have erred by not clearing your calculator first. Any way you look at it, the report documents a down sales report. Try it again.

Chrysler's Nov sales, -25% on an unadjusted basis, should be down by 19% yr/yr adjusted for selling days, well above a consensus for a 27% fall.

Spin.  What spin?  Chrysler's spin for sure, quoting the only cars with increased sales compared to last November's dismal sales figures.  Abysmal indeed.

Up versus forecast,  oh man, that is going to be really funny to people in 2019, how in 2009 we took 'forecasts' from people with vested interests so seriously!

PT Cruiser down 91%... is that with or without faux wood side paneling?

That was the first thing I noticed - 310 PT Cruisers sold.  LMAO!!  Who is buying those things?  Or not buying them, I guess.  Maybe the rental car companies finally realized no one wanted them.

After 75% of their dealers closed their doors a couple months ago, what do you expect?

Who were the 29 people who bought Durangos?  Anyone want to admit to that?  And I bet these people went into 5 years of debt to buy one.  I would also speculate that this being the first day of December, they've each got to know the dealer's service personnel at least once since taking delivery.

Only 310 people bought PT Cruisers?  What, people don't like driving around in cars that look like candy-colored hearses anymore?

PT Cruiser is the street name.

Internally, it is known as the PT Barnum.

Ugliest fucking car on 4 wheels...

I would not buy one if Chrysler invented a "$0 down, $0 price Cruiser program with $3000 cash back"...

In other words, Chrysler could not pay me to take one of their cars...

It is reassuring to know Cash for Clunkers was wildly successful pulling November's demand forward to August. Way to go Fat Larry Summers et al.

Key info required to put sales in perspective:
What % was Retail vs Fleet?
What % of fleet was daily rental vs commercial fleet?

True indicator of sales is the retail volumes. Ma & Pa Kettle by a Jeep.
Commercial Fleet is still OK as they do make money on it. This is sales to small to major sized Corporations.
Rental business is pretty much the zero profit wholesale business that can be heavily manipulated up or down by flogging vehicles to the rental co's. Bigger the discount the more volume you get. Its sort of like Overstock.com for cars and trucks

What the hell?

I am reading that right?

Chrysler did NOT sell ANY Pacificas, Crossfires, or Magnums last month? That is, for the month of November 2009, those three modeals accounted for exactly 0 sales?

Is that right???

Those three models were discontinued in 2008. Wouldn't be be many (if any) left in dealer inventory.

The PT Cruiser is a retro 1930's Depression era vehicle.
The dismal sales of the thing now probably represent people's reluctance to 'live the dream' of a great depression again.

Also surprising to note is the fall in 300's.

300's represent a modern muscular power luxury car.

Perhaps the consumer has shifted focus to the Dodge Charger (same thing, cops drive 'em lately).

This is un-freakin'-believable... 29 Durangos?!! In a whole month??! Aren't we off by an order of magnitude here? And why is there still an assembly line for this product??
