My take is that if one's number comes up early, before major dislocation occurs, you might (you can never know) be better off taking a major jolt of pain, but still be around for the dislocation, with your family, intact. Good point, and that is why it fails. When people know they are being censored, silenced, filtered, harrassed, persecuted, jailed for their words, they resist it, without end.
But the spectacular achievement of modern propaganda in the Western world, is to enslave people, when all they while they think they are free!
There are so many ways to deal with serious dissenters in the Western world, that you rarely even have to apply force. You can character assasinate them, begin a tax audit, frame them for a crime (you don't even need to get a conviction, the time, effort and disruption to their lives is often sufficient).
More to the point, when people believe that they are free to speak, they are incredulous at any type of censorship at all, and yet censorship is constantly going on. Even Google, champion of free speech, censors comments on youtube.

No-one's justifying China's suppression of free speech. They're just saying the US isn't much different. How do you justify arbitrary detention for smoking the 'wrong' plant? Or not paying 'your' taxes? Or resisting US occupation of your country?
Most people would rather live in the US than China.... but will that still be true in 10 years? China appears to be getting freer. Can't say the same about the US.

Our rights are dying via the "boil the frog method". The method implies our rights are being violated in a very slight but increasing manner, to the point where before we realize it, we are in a police state.
We now have TSA at high school proms, AMTRAK, etc. The 4th Amendment is now void. The President will soon have the power to conduct war abroad and within our own borders.
Our rights are being taken away a little at a time.
