Congresswoman Gabby Giffords Shot "Point Blank In The Head" At Town Hall Event In Tucson

Tyler Durden's picture

From Breaking News: Local media is reporting Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, a Democrat, was shot ‘point blank in the head at a town-hall like event in northern Tucson. Is this the beginning?

Update from NBC News:  Dem Party in Tucson saying Giffords taken to hospital, 5 others also shot. Shooter apparently in custody.

Update 2: from Fox Phoenix: 12 people shot at Gabby Giffords community meeting. Congresswoman among the injured, while CNN reports 6 dead and 15 wounded.

Update 3: NPR confirms Gifford has died.

Update 4: Reuters refuting the previous NPR news, and states that Giffords is still alive, in surgery, nine other patients brought in from shooting, per a hospital spokeswoman

The best coverage of this event we have found so far is, ironically, on Sky News:

And now it gets pathetically political: Breaking news reports that a liberal blogger blames Sarah Palin for Gabrielle Giffords assasination attempt.

“F*** it. I’m going there” One liberal blogger wrote on Saturday
after news of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot dead in point
blank range at a Tuscon rally. The blogger TBogg
blamed former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin for the congresswoman’s
death after Palin named Giffords as one of her ‘targets’ during the 2010
mid-term elections. Palin was caught in controversy when she published on her Facebook
page a graphic that showed several ‘target’ districts, including
Giffords 8th district in Arizona.

Gawker has provided a description of the shooter:

A gunman indiscriminately fired into a crowd at a gathering for Democratic representative Gabrielle Giffords outside a Safeway in Tucson, Arizona this morning. Giffords and at least five others were shot, according to NPR. The gunman was tackled and arrested.

Update: We spoke to an eyewitness, Steven Rayle who
was on the scene at the time of the shooting and helped to hold the
suspect down while waiting for police. Here's what he said:

The event was very informal: Gifford had set up a table outside the
Safeway and about 20-30 people were gathered to talk to her. The gunman,
who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Gifford
in the head first. According to Rayle, who is a former ER doctor,
Gifford was able to move her hands after being shot.

After shooting Gifford, the gunman opened fire indiscriminately for a
few seconds, hitting a number of people, including a kid no older than
10 years old. Rayle hid behind a concrete pole and pretended to be dead.
When the gunman apparently ran out of ammunition he attempted to flee,
but a member of Gifford's staff tackled him. The Rayle helped hold him
down while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, about 15-or 20 minutes
later. 30 minutes later the EMS came. Rayle said he was "stunned" by how
long it took medical help to arrive.

The man was young, mid-to-late 20s, white clean-shaven with short
hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or
while being held down. He didn't look like a businessman, but more of a
"fringe character," our source said.

From Giffrods Wikipedia page:

Gabrielle Giffords (born June 8, 1970) is the U.S. Representative for Arizona's 8th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

She is the only member of the U.S. Congress whose spouse, astronaut Mark E. Kelly, is an active duty member of the U.S. military.[1]

Giffords is known as a strong proponent of solar energy as well as for her work to secure the border with Mexico.[2] [3]

Giffords was first sworn in as a congresswoman on January 3, 2007.
She is the third woman in Arizona's history to be elected to serve in
the U.S. Congress. In her inaugural speech on the floor of the House of
Representatives, Giffords said a comprehensive immigration reform
package needs to include modern technology to secure the border, more
border patrol agents, tough employer sanctions for businesses that
knowingly hire illegal immigrants, and a guest-worker program. In her
first month in office, Congresswoman Giffords voted to support increased
federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research, raising the minimum wage, endorsing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission,
and supporting new rules for the House of Representatives targeting
ethical issues. Giffords also voted to repeal subsidies to big oil
companies and invest the savings in renewable energy. "We put our national security at risk by relying on oil from unstable regimes in the Middle East and Latin America," Giffords told her colleagues in a speech on the House floor during debate on the Clean Energy Act. The act repeals $14 billion in subsidies given to oil companies and establishes a Strategic Renewable Energy Reserve to increase research in clean renewable energy, to develop greater energy efficiency, and to improve energy conservation.

During the 2007 session of Congress, Giffords introduced a bill (H.R. 1441)[4] that forbids the sale of F-14 aircraft parts on the open market.[5] She also voted for the contentious May 2007 Iraq Emergency Supplemental Spending bill,
saying, "I cannot, in good conscience, allow the military to run out of
money while American servicemen and women are being attacked every
day".[6]

Giffords is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition and the New Democrat Coalition.

More as we see it.

KOS is center-right, although Giffords a "Blue Dog", which is essentially Pelosi's position. Blue Dogs are currently center-center I would think, which is left-center of Obama, but not so far left that she would be considered part of the disaffected progressive base. When the GOP came to power in 2000 they went after the Blue Dogs, probably a Rove tactic, to neutralize that part of the opposition closest to their own position, and create a fundamental divide with which to argue against the Democrat party, from the bully pulpit. It was a very effective technique, and still is, as progressives are thoroughly marginalized, and a Democrat is in the White House..

You all need to get a grip.  This is the work of a crazy person.  I have been postin on this blog stating this would happen for over 6 months.  It is because the American People are angry and some are hurting to the point of going nutz.  That is the provacitive reason for my post.  If people are going crazy and trying to assinate elected representation (that would not change the votes much anyway), what do you think those that lose an entire fortune at the hands of a manipulated market POZI scheme with the likes fo Bernake, Hank Paulsen, Lolyd Blankfiend, Larry Summers, and Timmah?  These are all NON ELECTED and appointed, and they have done much more damage than an elected representative has.  I actually liked this particular Representative.

BTW, those idiots blaming this on Sarah Palin, or The Right wingers, you need to know the lefties are just as bad at this, and throw in the illegal alien contingent and you have pissed off people all around.

As a former firefighter/paramedic I can guarantee you it didn't take 30 minutes for fire/ems to arrive. Many a time we rolled up on a house fire/shooting within 3 minutes of dispatch and people were screaming at us over how long it had taken us to arrive.

Why should I shed a tear for someone who is a member of the government and fully supports all their criminal behavior?  Give me one good reason why it's not far more tragic that a hardworking private citizen is tazered and shot sitting on their porch by a local enforcement division simply because one of the members of the divison had a personal beef with the individual.  This must be the worst case of stockholm syndrome the world has ever seen.

You should "shed a tear" (figuratively if not literally)

to show you have some compassion and pity for all who suffer and die, no matter "your" side or "theirs",

both sides, no matter how insightful or deluded they have been.

There is nothing much to distinguish delight over the death of your "enemies", to indifference. And neither attitude seems to make this world a better place.

From 2009:

In February, when U.S. District Judge John Roll presided over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher, the Marshals Service was anticipating the fallout.

When Roll ruled the case could go forward, Gonzales said talk-radio shows cranked up the controversy and spurred audiences into making threats.

In one afternoon, Roll logged more than 200 phone calls. Callers threatened the judge and his family. They posted personal information about Roll online.

"They said, 'We should kill him. He should be dead,' " Gonzales said.

Roll, who is the chief federal judge in Arizona, said both he and his wife were given a protection detail for about a month.

"It was unnerving and invasive. . . . By its nature it has to be," Roll said, adding that they were encouraged to live their lives as normally as possible. "It was handled very professionally by the Marshals Service."

Well, it doesnt matter if it was political, drug related, a false flag, some lunatics goal in life... This was comming (people saw it- G. Even if its not political, this will inspire nut jobs to unload at any polititian in range- both parties are so detached from the needs of the people and the majorityof theese "reprisentatives" would gladly sell the whole country for 29.99$, that some people are acctualy cheering this on as a first reaction (dont tell me you dont see where this is comming from)...

Listen in on Iraq and Afghanistan veterans at any VA. Comments along the line of "I know I'm going to die because of what they (the DoD) did to me, but before I do I'm going to take out some SOB’s." are not uncommon. Is this idle talk?

Add that to long term U.S. policies giving Mexican criminals full reign over U.S. land and populations. Current weak attempts to stem their tide are being rebuffed with "shock & awe" techniques. Do we honestly believe it's going to get better without military level retaliation?

Continue summing up with our majority of Americans who have lost significant net worth, homes, their livelihood or more. Now watch our government and financial sectors continue to assume the populace is hunky-dory with their newly imposed serfdom.

Could the problem be that dangerous outliers develop out of any stressed population and we all chose to ignore that reality?

I'm guessing that in normal times civilization exerts controls via civil and criminal law over a minimal number of rogue responders. However, under stressed conditions the number of dangerous outliers increases to the point of overburdening standard processes. Typical response is history's ritual of enacting draconian laws & ham-handed controls over their “assumed to be misbehaving” citizens. Instead of helping, this only exacerbates stress levels of an already overstressed population. Welcome to the maelstrom.

The start of something? No, I suspect the true tipping point occurred a number of years ago - perhaps sometime around the time habeas corpus was suspended, housing collapsed, and our banks stole billions from American pocketbooks.

We're reaping the results of continued shortsightedness and acting surprised as society slowly tips off civilization’s cliff. It's somewhat like being sideswiped by a parallax obscured semi, or watching the death slide of a California cliff home in a mudslide. The initial perceived snail's speed of imminent disaster fools many spectators into believing there's still time to save Polly from the train tracks.

Think about the above while viewing talking head elite guests on just about any newscast. Their smirks, giggles and mocking of current events is mimicked by most whether left, right or moderate. Meanwhile government and financial hegemony can't comprehend what's in front of their respective noses.

The start of something? No, this is just part of a continuing increase in speed before it all crashes.

I suspect that park represents only a tiny portion of U.S. state land lost to Mexican terrorists.

The Federal government completed its appropriation of the National Guard under the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008.  State militias were initially pulled together under an umbrella of federal control with the National Defense Act of 1916, but until recently states maintained overarching control of their named Guard forces. Before 1916 states maintained protective forces acting only under state orders.

If Governors had "nads" they would fire their federal "National Guard" and recreate state militia.  No Governors currently has control over their own protection.  The "well armed militia" necessary for individual state security is long gone.

This Horrific act instantly changed dozens of lives and may have ended some of them. Let us hope and pray that the damage will be minimal. Speculation about the shooter is a waste of intelligent effort at this time. However, the medical response time may need to be addressed.

All other issues, and motives aside, this may be a large and damaging act upon the way Democracy has worked. This IS different than other shootings. The open meeting with the citizens by politicians to hear and discuss has worked well in the last couple of years. It was America as it should be. That process will now be like air travel with so many restrictions that people will not go. This was an effective blow to our election and political Freedom.

It is my hope that the de-briefing of this person will not be restricted to the liberal nice guy tactics. All methods should be used to extract all information. If he turns out to be a mental case, then let us be sure.

This is an awful day for those people. It is an awful day for America. The political and agenda opportunity is certainly open. Pay attention to how this is played---PAY ATTENTION.

You really need to look at things more objectively. If anything, this is a response to the way this Republic has NOT worked, to the way elected representatives of ANY party have ignored their constituents, how they have used every parliamentary trick in the book to pass legislation and enact laws that deprive the citizens of the their constitutional rights and deny future generations of the full benefits of the the fruits of their labor.

That violence has been resorted to, and in particualr, if true, the murder of a child, is indeed terrible. And irrespective of some of the perspectives aired in the comments, it is likely that most here have some feeling of condolence for the families. What each of us feels depends on our own circumstances.

But to describe this as "horrific" is at best misrepresenting the scale of the event in the broader context of the rape and pillage of this country.

You clearly have not seen horror.

The Tea Party People never (not one documented case) started/caused any kind of violence that was attributed to them.

The SEIU thugs( Obammys Buds), on the other hand show up, beat down a brother, put him in the hospital, and cause a small shitstorm.

But, the Tea Party members caught all the vendictive shit, and accusations simply by protesting w/out physical violence go figure.

What bugs me most is that of course it's going to be politicians most accessible to the people (and generally the least powerful and corrupt) who are going to be the targets.

There are a few folks who go into politics because they actually think they can do good, and of all the possible assassination targets, they definitely deserve it the LEAST.

Meanwhile, the most corrupt, cynical, and powerful are well-insulated inside the Beltway and stand to gain from this sort of action.

Backwards, depressing, counterproductive.  Bah.

It took the cops only 20 minutes to arrive in spite of the private security work the city (and the feds) had them engaged in at the time, (Just think if this had been an ordinary home invasion or burglary of a regular citizen rather than a political assassination the vic would still be waiting for law enforcement).  Besides, it's short staffing Saturday in Tuscon and most other places since it's cheaper to pay supervisory staff OT on a Saturday (and their retirement for years) than it is to hire sufficient staff.  (At least the 911 operator didn't tell them to file the report via the internet, common in many places, even for crimes of violence)

The ambulance is on a private-public partnership so nothing else needs to be said.  Private health care enterprise can't respond to a gun shot in less than 30 minutes for a member of congress or within the hour for everyone else.  Tuscon should look to Dominoes if it wants to shorten the wait times as pizza gets a higher priority in our just in time society.

Meanwhile a member of congress has been murdered at the hands of a nominal constituent.  Too bad the MOC didn't really govern and the constituent will now become simply one more drain on the public purse as rooms at the ADX don't come cheap.  Meanwhile, the political assassination block of the US is a banana republic has been checked while this provides a marvelous opportunity for the members of the bar, the security apparatus & talk radio lunatics do what they do.  Pump for profit and prepare to build careers upon untimely death.

How tragic, and telling, all the way round
