Congresswoman Gabby Giffords Shot "Point Blank In The Head" At Town Hall Event In Tucson
From Breaking News: Local media is reporting Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, a Democrat, was shot ‘point blank in the head at a town-hall like event in northern Tucson. Is this the beginning?
Update from NBC News: Dem Party in Tucson saying Giffords taken to hospital, 5 others also shot. Shooter apparently in custody.
Update 2: from Fox Phoenix: 12 people shot at Gabby Giffords community meeting. Congresswoman among the injured, while CNN reports 6 dead and 15 wounded.
Update 3: NPR confirms Gifford has died.
Update 4: Reuters refuting the previous NPR news, and states that Giffords is still alive, in surgery, nine other patients brought in from shooting, per a hospital spokeswoman

Gawker has provided a description of the shooter:
A gunman indiscriminately fired into a crowd at a gathering for Democratic representative Gabrielle Giffords outside a Safeway in Tucson, Arizona this morning. Giffords and at least five others were shot, according to NPR. The gunman was tackled and arrested.
Update: We spoke to an eyewitness, Steven Rayle who
was on the scene at the time of the shooting and helped to hold the
suspect down while waiting for police. Here's what he said:
The event was very informal: Gifford had set up a table outside the
Safeway and about 20-30 people were gathered to talk to her. The gunman,
who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Gifford
in the head first. According to Rayle, who is a former ER doctor,
Gifford was able to move her hands after being shot.
After shooting Gifford, the gunman opened fire indiscriminately for a
few seconds, hitting a number of people, including a kid no older than
10 years old. Rayle hid behind a concrete pole and pretended to be dead.
When the gunman apparently ran out of ammunition he attempted to flee,
but a member of Gifford's staff tackled him. The Rayle helped hold him
down while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, about 15-or 20 minutes
later. 30 minutes later the EMS came. Rayle said he was "stunned" by how
long it took medical help to arrive.
The man was young, mid-to-late 20s, white clean-shaven with short
hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or
while being held down. He didn't look like a businessman, but more of a
"fringe character," our source said.

The act repeals $14 billion in subsidies given to oil companies and establishes a Strategic Renewable Energy Reserve to increase research in clean renewable energy, to develop greater energy efficiency, and to improve energy conservation.
During the 2007 session of Congress, Giffords introduced a bill (H.R. 1441)[4] that forbids the sale of F-14 aircraft parts on the open market.[5] She also voted for the contentious May 2007 Iraq Emergency Supplemental Spending bill,
saying, "I cannot, in good conscience, allow the military to run out of
money while American servicemen and women are being attacked every
day".[6]
Giffords is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition and the New Democrat Coalition.

Apparently she's alive and somewhat responsive.
Question: What's her long-term prognosis if she makes it? What sort of mental damage is caused by a bullet straight somebody's brain, based on past cases?

Without specific information on the location and extent of brain damage caused by direct trauma and related hypovolemic anoxia, all speculation is purely hypothetical, and even then it's not an exact science. If the reports are correct that she is conscious and responsive to stimuli, the long-term prognosis can range from minor personality changes to serious cognitive deficits, assuming no chronic parenchymal degeneration.

No, he thought they were of great value, that is why he shot them...assuming of course, any semblance of sanity within him, which does not seem likely. In my view, only when the true value of those close to you is understood emotionally, can one understand the value of others to others. The lack of that experience is why the military prefers young, single men to do their killing.

Public servants refusing to discuss real issues of importance to many of us like the controlled demolition of building 7. Agenda 21, Codex Alimentarius, the police state feeling us up and irradiating us at airports, leaving the corporate controlled media in charge of the talking point memos and continually trying to socially engineer freedom out of our lives, etc.
Our elected servants have given the American people more than enough reasons to take matters into our own hands exacting our own form of justice because our government delivers none on our behalf. No banksters jailed for fraud and ruining our economy and our lives etc.
The French people had a unique way to deal with unruly public servants, guillotines! It will come to guillotines and the killing of many more public servants if they don't get on the side of Main Street Americans real soon and respect our Constitution.

Without getting sentimental I will say that kids are the only thing that truly make me smile and connect me with wonder (animals too). I was attempting to point out the inconsistency seen here today with regards to this child killed and the myriad we are all responsible for killing daily as "collateral damage" in the pursuit of some notion of terrorism and security, above and beyond anything that is justified.

I guess the 20 million men who died in 1914-1918 and the 400,000 men who died in 1940 were just noise, poor ass. My great-grandfather died in the trenches, covered by mud, fragments of skulls and blood.
We have lost more men than Americans lost in their entire history.
In January 1914 the French Army had 47 divisions (777,000 French and 46,000 colonial troops) in 21 regional corps, with attached cavalry and field-artillery units. Most these troops were deployed inside France with the bulk along the eastern frontier as part of Plan 17.
With the fear of war with Germany a further 2.9 million men were mobilized during the summer of 1914. Heavy losses on the Western Front during the first months of the war forced the French government to conscript men up to the age of 45.
The structure and balance of the French Army changed during the war. By 1918 about 40% of all French troops on the Western Front were artillerymen. Increasing use of machine-guns, armoured cars and tanks also reduced the numbers in the infantry. The growing importance of the French Army Air Service also had an impact and whereas there were 1,5 million in the French infantry in June 1915, this dropped to 850,000 in 1918.
By the end of the First World War, a total of 8,317,000 men, including 475,000 colonial troops, had been called up to fight in the French Army.
France suffered 4.2 million casualties, including 1.3 million dead.
While his 20 million was quite obviously an over exageration, 4.2 million is not a small number. Remember also, that 4.2 million were killed and wounded in a very small geographic area.

In 1938, France joined Great Britain in an attempt to appease Nazi aggression. France signed the Munich Pact and helped give Germany"permission" to invade the Sudeten territories of Czechoslovakia. It was soon clear that this attempt at appeasement failed.
After Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, France declared war.
France's war against Germany did not last long. On June 22, 1940, France surrendered to Germany.
France was occupied by the Germans until 1944. June 6 of that year was D-Day. A massive Allied force invaded the beaches of Normandy.
Through the summer and fall, the Allies pushed eastward through France towards Germany. In August, Allied troops also landed in the South of France.
By the end of the war, about 350,000 French soldiers had been killed, and almost a half million French civilians had died.
D-Day was June 6, 1944.
During the weeks that followed the D-Day landings, the Germans fiercely resisted Allied advances in the hedgerows of Normandy. Cherbourg fell three weeks after the landings, but the port had been destroyed and time-consuming repairs were required before it could be used to relieve the Allied supply problem.
Meanwhile, Allied forces had been deepening the beachhead. By the end of June the most forward positions were about 20 miles inland. The buildup of Allied forces was swift, despite the lack of ports, and by 1 July almost a million men, more than a half-million tons of supplies, and 177,000 vehicles had been landed. By this time General Bradley's U.S. First Army comprised 4 corps with 11 infantry and 2 armored divisions. British strength was about the same.
At the end of June, British forces made an attempt to break into the open country near Caen. Heavy bombers were used in close support to facilitate this breakout, but the destruction they wrought served to impede rather than to assist the British ground forces and German armored units blocked an advance in that sector.
General Montgomery now adopted the strategy of attracting German armor to the British sector while American units continued to attack in the vicinity of St. Lo. On 25 July a massive air bombardment was coordinated with an attack by ground troops that achieved a distinct penetration of German lines. General Patton's U.S. Third Army poured through this breach in the direction of Brittany with the object of securing the much-needed ports in that area.
The Allied strategic plan was to take over Breton ports and then to secure a lodgment area as far east as the Seine River, to provide ample room for air and supply bases. It was then intended to advance into Germany on a broad front. The principal thrust east was to be north of the Ardennes Forest in Belgium with General Montgomery's British 21st Army Group. A subsidiary thrust by General Bradley's newly formed U.S. 12th Army Group, comprising the U.S. First and Third Armies, was to be made south of the Ardennes. This northern route was chosen because it led directly into the Ruhr area where Germany's industrial power was concentrated.
The Allied strategic plan underwent considerable modification early in August to seize upon the advantages of the breakout and exploit the principle of maneuver. When the Germans counterattacked with the intention of restoring a stable front and cutting off U.S. forces moving toward Brittany, they unwittingly offered the Allies an opportunity to encircle them.
British forces on the left moved toward Falaise and U.S. troops to the right executed a wide circling maneuver toward Argentan, roughly halfway between St. Lo and Paris. Caught in a giant pocket, the Germans nevertheless extricated many troops before the Argentan-Falaise gap was closed on 20 August, though losing more than 70,000.
Meanwhile, General Patton's Third Army drove eastward across the Seine and eliminated it as a German defensive line, encircling and destroying Germans who had escaped the Argentan-Falaise pocket. The Germans lost almost all of two field armies in Normandy.
Maybe they should learn to fight better! Better yet, have them all GPS chipped so you can find them.
