Coordinated Derisking
It appears the market now only acts sensibly on big volume (SPY volume now is 73 million shares above average) selloff days. The chart below is what one would expect, and what one would never see over the past 6 months.

What time does Skynet come online?
right about now-ish? (2:36pm EST)
Wonder what it's like where banksters are told to go to hell? Here in US where daylight robbery is not only allowed but taxpayer funded, I wouldn't know.
Live in the suburbs in 2400 square feet, work in a cubicle, drive a minivan, and send your kids to public school, that's where.
I think this is representative of financial markets having participation limited to a much smaller group.
Put on oil and natti too
Would you really expect to see a down VIX on a 170 point lower day?
its not-
exactly, something is off here.
Hondo VIX scale is inverted.
I actually feel a palpable sense of relief today - big neg volume first day of sept and those over zealous algos getting very little traction. 5 - 15 min plateaus to play with rather than whole sessions
Phil LeBlowme reports sales up 21% and then briefly mentions the target of 40% and blows over the simple math - Missed estimates by 50%. No wonder he does not post here, the captcha would kill him.
That is funny

It´s funny CNBC in another world, only pay per view.
Suddenly it all makes sense. Maybe they turned squid off for the day.
Or maybe Goldman's agents are spreading the Wells Fargo rumor to cash in on those WFC put positions they've been building?
Rumor of a bank default from some hedge fund. So since the bank stocks are only like less than 1 percent of trading volume. Oh wait. I forgot this is crazy town where it's all banks banks banks and marsha.
Perhaps many of the big boys blew their wad on the struggle during the last hour and a half yesterday, especially the ridiculous ramp in the last five minutes.

A classic example of removing thin and narrow support and watching the resulting collapse. It has been clear for months that the so called "rally" was an illusion crafted in the mass media as broadly supported.
Last weeks pump and dump of the dead stocks (fannie, freddie, AIG etc) was the only way the powers that be could get a limping market to month's end. Now that the herd has been spooked, we shall see who really buys into the "buy the dips" mentality we've been hearing is so prevalent.
GS and company can make money regardless of the direction of the market. Hang on tight to the panic bar because the roller coaster just crested the "pull" hill and now the fun really begins.

^^ wins
Absolutely, I agree. I think over the next 4-8 weeks we are in for some serious equity deleveraging.
The day is still young.
Good call
Rumors swirling of an unexpected major bank failure, possibly in Europe. GBP got whacked yesterday . . . hmm.
United in Chicago I hear from 2 sources ...
Vix with a 2 handle is and always will be a bargain until markets accept the "new normal"
Tyler,
If I am right, the last time we had a volume swing of this size was July.
Feeling is that this is just another load up the shorts moment so they can squeeze then again. There is too much control in the hands of a very few.......the drop basically stopped at 1k on the S&P.....just a little too cute IMO.
MS
I just glanced at the post again and I thought it said "Coordinated Drinking" haha
yeah it's a bit early, usually I don't get into the Stoli til at least 3pm
Where the hell is CB?
They sent him to the liquor store.
+1
It's always later in the day when u used Asia time...cheers!
I miss my Cheeky???
Stoli used to be my drink of choice until I discovered Hammer and Sickle. Truly the vodka of champions.
Here's to a shot for everytime SnP crosses 1000 today.
Someone's not going to see after hours action at this rate, much less 3pm if they can't hold their liquor.
What a rough market!
Maybe 'they' let go sometimes to see what happens. Just for a little while mind you.
Almost too perfect - a predator blends in to lure in the prey. I'll second #55148
This is what happens when you threaten to audit the FED. Market shiits the bed..On another note.. Coach upgraded..COH currently trading up 2%. Yes everyone will be buying coach bags to carry around all there default notices..Enjoy the show.
shitty bags marketed to aspirational suburban consumers. huge upside.
> This is what happens when you threaten to audit the FED.
We have a winner ...
You know your stocks better than your vodka: Svedka is pure crap, marketed as a 'premium' vodka. Taste test it and you'll know, but short of that, you should know that bar's can buy it for just slightly more than well vodka. In fact, when we run out of well, we switch to Svedka. Finalandia's pretty good though.
Horrible stuff. Tried it. Twice (1.75L) when they were on sale. I regret it every time i stray from trustie smirnoff...
Russian Standard Platinum
Svedka is swill. Grey Goose it is.
FINALLY made some good coin today on SPY puts. Loaded up on some more SPY Oct 101 puts - let er rip.
I refuse to drink Grey Goose because French people don't know shit about making vodka.
Why deny yourself a good martini just because you hate the French? I'm no fan of the French but I must give credit where it is due: Grey Goose, Brie, and Cognac notably.
Let's celebrate reversal day.
The hard part is timing it. Find a metric that works for you and you can make a lot of money.

I am most interested in every monkey in a suit advising the innocent to "buy the dips". To me, it seems like a concerted move which really means, "buy our stock as we dump it into a weak market, thanks!".
That's the same thing as Microsofts "dog food". Which means letting people widely beta test stuff so that they evangalize it to everyone. If you can get people to buy the dips then they will start evangelizing and it turns into the same "dog food" strategy.
Actually, that's incorrect. Originally, the term derived from the saying "Eat your own dogfood", of which they were forced to run on their own daily builds. Saw it with my own eyes @ the Exchange group building in Redmond back in 97', but the term originated earlier than then.
Two different terms with two different meanings. You have to see the "fanboy" evangelism in action to understand. It's a melding of religion and economics. How pathetic do you have to be that your ideological and intellectual capacity doesn't extend beyond cheerleading the "right" technology or software program.
The people who try to control us alway try to mess with our sense of self in such ways and needs to belong.
Sign up for Nvidia's message board. They basically ask you a bunch of questions about how influential you are in getting people to buy stuff so they can determine how much respect you deserve. Computer industry always tries to flesh things out according to evangelical structure. Same thing with stock market, Cramer, Buffet, etc etc.
Everyone ready for the bounce It's 1:35 bounce imminent. S&P will not go below 998.50 days low. It was nice while it lasted.
woudn't surprise me
It's at 997.06 as I type this, at 3:50 PM EST. You fail at prohecy.

and because i work with all boys, my mind is warped.
in the land of mediocrity, you must follow the leader. especially true when dealing with insecure financial services types (just mho, but about 99% of dudes in financial services (i-bankers r the worst) are insecure).
They usually like it when I say that...
In Finland we have a joke "Mistä näitä senttejä oikein tulee" = same in English: "from where all these cents are coming"?

Mish is still on about how incompetence, not corruption or collusion (or conspiracy) are the reasons for Congress, Treasury, Fed, White House actions...
Its actually both.
still a case of the USD rallying for the wrong reasons. But JPY to maintain its risk-aversion mojo and USDJPY has yet to drop below 91.
