Costco Is Now In The Apocalypse Provisioning Business

Tyler Durden's picture

One of the more amusing implications of Bernanke's relentless desire to destroy the world is that he is causing a surge in profit margins for retailers like costco which are now actively engaged in provisioning for the upcoming monetary policy-induced apocalypse. And here is the deal of the day, courtesy of producer shelf reliance ("your premier source for food storage and emergency preparedness planning") as Bernanke is apparently dead set on immitating the BOJ in purchasing ETFs openly, as opposed to using its secret Citadel dark pool channels: $799 buys you a 1-year food supply for 1 person or 5,011 total servings. Thank you Bernanke - your actions have now lead people to believe you are the antichrist. We can't decide if Geithner is famine or pestilence.

(link here for those who would rather not wait until Bernanke terminally breaks the dollar)

What is the lowest level the dollar ever reached?

I can answer this one.

Sometime in 1994 I was a USD/JPY currency trader.  I hit a 79.50 USD/JPY bid (August I think) for 2 bucks.  Immediately, the dollar rose and never fell below 79.50 for as long as I remained a trader.  I have the honor of hitting the lowest USD/JPY bid in history.

If all the other currencies are dropping, you can't really tell how far the dollar has fallen if you are pricing it in those other currencies.

Only in a situation where ALL production has stopped.

Supply disruptions might make food outperform gold over a short timeframe, but gold always outperforms in the long run (always meaning always during hyperinflationary scenarios).

I think you might be incorrect. Most people never are fully stocked. In a panic, they will try to buy extra and this will quickly disrupt the supply system. Think what happens when there's a hurricane coming or a shortage of gas is announced. Most people normally drive around with a half tank of gas on average. Imagine what happens if everyone suddenly tries to stay at 3/4 full, to "top off" regularly.

Immediate shortage and massive supply problems.

I'm old enough to remember the so-called "OPEC embargo" and this is exactly what happens. So the entire supply doesn't need to be shut down. A higher than normal buying impulse will push the system into convolutions.

We had a blizzard warning a couple years ago, within 2 hours it was pandemonium in the stores as all water was gone, shelves bare, and grannies were performing beat-downs on other grannies for a 6 pack of Ensure. Man this is setting up to be brutal.

I had the same experience.  I went into the Grocery store before a big storm and the shelves were bare.  I mean bare.  I asked if the store was going out of business and they told me, no, a storm is comming.  Although this is in an area where people can get snowed in for 3 or 4 days.  Just think about what would happen if people thought there would be no more food deliveries.

Tue, 10/05/2010 - 15:01 | 626856 tmosley
tmosley's picture

Yes, but those convulsions will also push up gold and silver.  Goods like food are among those things with increase in price the fastest during hyperinflation, but it is a rare event indeed for their rise to outpace gold and silver.

The oil embargo was only a problem because the markets were not allowed to operate, as there were price controls in effect.  If gas had risen to $2 a gallon back then, there would have been plenty of gas for those who really needed it.  I'm sure there were some fortunes made by enterprising individuals who sold gas at real market rates after hours.

When all supply of a given commodity disappears, then yes, it will rise against the PoG.  My point is that these types of disruptions tend to be short.  Food is pretty easy to find in this country.  After a short transition period, most of the nation outside of the big cities that are far from farmland will transition to local supply of basics, and the price of food will come down.  I don't see this taking more than a year at most, as fields will be replanted for food rather than cash crops like cotton.  This is why you should keep both food and gold.  I've got a two year supply of food that just happened from keeping excess flour, sugar and other supplies for my mother's bakery in a storage building, and from canning fruits and vegetables for friends and for a local farm last year (turns out autoclaves are basically giant pressure cookers, having one in the lab makes for easy canning in quantity).  All the food I have cost less than $2000.  Now, most people have a lot more capital than that to protect.  This is why gold and silver work so well.

Why I am not a fan of cities.  I'm trapped in them for my profession but if I stay in the US I hope to move to a smaller nicer one this summer.  The cities will be a really nasty place to be when the trucks stop.  What most assume is the gov would step in and force food to flow, but if the gov melts down because the dollar is slag what happens then?  People don't like to think what LA or NYC would look like if the trucks stopped especially for any length of time, so they say it won't happen.

Why the hell would the trucks stop?

They haven't anywhere else a monetary collapse has occurred.  The government works harder to ensure that the power is on in the city than in the country.

Power stays on a lot of the time even in wars, jfc, enough with the fucking madmax zombie apocalypse shit, ok?  Madmax was after a nuclear war.

Only one problem...just like 100 Year Bonds will Costco be in position to make good on the dollars they took from you today.

Why would they want to offer such a product especially if they believe the cost of that same food would be worth more 6 months from now?

Why do gold silver shops want to offer a product they believe will be worth more 6 months from now?  The same reason as grocers, and most retailers:

They make money on the spread between the price they pay and the price they sell for.

Whether the price of commodities go up OR down, gold shops and Costco will make money.

They hedge their holdings religiously so price volatility is neutralized on their books.

Seeing that post I actually just remembered a dream I had this morning in which I was trying to purchase either an M1 or an M14, and while the gunshop owner was highly supportive of my choices, he didn't have any in stock and was pitching me several overpriced 5.56mm's.

I guess it was more of a nightmare than a dream, actually.  Sheesh.

I won't knock the Garand, it's a good weapon (little light on capacity).  However personally I would be looking for something in the 7.62 Nato, or if one wanted to go light I'm a fan of the M-4.  7.62 Nato is good vs most anything a person will be packing, and even if they have enough armor to stop the round they will be hurting, and there is a wide selection of good 7.62 rifles.  The Armalite A-10 is great for the price, POF makes a good .308 as well but it's a little more pricey.

I'm not trying to be mean - you must not know very much about firearms - you shouldn't lead people astray.

The M1 Garand is a fine rifle, and the .30-06 round is excellent, but it is clearly not the finest choice. It is the M1A that individuals should choose to defend themselves for most purposes - 20-round magazine over 8-round en-bloc anyday. There are better firearms for very specific tasks (extreme long-distance; concealable self-defense) but if you must choose only one there is no debate.

The AK, AR-15, whatever fanboys cannot compete. Higher range, better accuracy, one shot, one kill. This is not an opinion.

I know this is not a firearms board, but it must be clear to anyone trying to judge what careful decisions they must weigh. You must also seek training.

What Suisse said.

For a truly long term breakdown you want a rifle you'll find spare parts for, and ammo for, wherever you end up...which may not be near your stash of ammo and spare parts.   One Second After is a decent primer.   Your survival story can start where you happened to be one second before.

Reliabilty, portability, and availability of spare parts and ammo, and lets add on top of that toleration of wide varieties of quality and manufacture of ammo, are DE MINIMUS for the SHTF rifle.   Basically only AK variants and piston operated .223's need apply.  My accurized AR-10 with all the cool crap on it is great for airing out feral pigs, but .308/7.62 NATO that is super friendly with said AR-10 doesn't grow on trees, and parts for it are few and far between.   The lovely M1, M1A, and of course M14 knockoffs are even more rare, and  so an even worse choice, though they'd serve well IF you happened to be near enough to your stash of ammo and parts for them One Second Before.

Also, the secret code-word is 'zerohedge' if you approach said bunker and need shelter.

I remember when my Husband and I were really poor.  He got some of the K rations from World War II.  Amazing that after 30 or so years they were really good.  They kept very well in the cans.  I remember how much we enjoyed them but when you are poor and are hungry even K rations from World War II are good.  My Children still laugh about having to eat them.

Those Dead Duke's bars were terrific--the chocolate/peanut/wafer discs.  They'd sell on an open market of energy foods, I'm sure.  I'd say the same for the canned pound cakes.

Well, more like quarter-pound cakes, but whatever.

Well, my area has a lot of Deer, black birds, squirrels.  A Gun would come in very handy.  Plus, what is interesting is that all of my neighbors try to kill the Dandelions but the leaves make a great salad.  Learned that from an Italian friend.  Plus, my Neighbor has a pool and I have a water filter.

the useful properties of dandelions have been bred out of awareness by the "green lawn" crowds - the leaves are great in mixed salads, sourced Vit A & C, antioxidant properties in the flower heads, which can be used for dandelion wine, the roots ground for a "coffee" substitute (yes, no substitute for real coffee!). . .

they also help keep the bees around, and bees are something we don't want to disappear. . .

forage. learn to.

Yep, I let the Dandelions grow.  I happen to think they are pretty.  But thanks for the tip about the root which can be ground for a coffee substitute.  Maybe no real substitute of real coffee but probably great hot and with lots of vitamins.

I also in the spring have Mulberry trees.  Boy, do I love the Mulberrys they taste so good.  I also have lots of wild rasberrys in the spring.  They are like weeds.  Cannot get rid of them.  I stopped trying and harvest Rasberrys in the spring.

we get the wild blackberries here. . . more than you can pick, and great for preserving - I also freeze in bags to use for baked goods, etc.

have yet to try a mulberry - aren't the leaves what silkworms eat? just now is chanterelle "season" - and various other mushrooms. . . have to say, I love foraging round the woods in the fall. . .

as to the dandelion root - I'm a big coffee fan, and even tho' they like to say roasted dandelion root is a good substitute, it's NOT coffee, *grin* - but can be made tasty, and when there's no coffee, will do as a hot spicy bevvie - here's a good link if you're curious:

I don't like TVP but the problem with using meat other then the cost is storage.  Meat does not store long term in cans as well.  I think the best range is around 2 years, get a bit more time with tuna.  So anyone stocking up I would suggest getting canned meat as well, just need to rotate it out.  Some people buy these kits and just stash them so the meat would go bad.

Good point on getting canned meat, but I knew the price was too good to be true.

The meat won't go bad. You can research it, but essentially you can eat 20-30 year old cans of meat and it might have degraded taste wise but will still be sterile as long as there is no rust on the can and the can isn't 'bowed out' (which indicates botulism).

Same with canned butter and cheese, veggies etc. It really is a miracle how long we can store food these days compared to our ancestors.

It seems a little light on cooking basics. I see no way to make baking powder, baking soda, vinegar, yeast, salt, etc.

Don't get me wrong its a good start for those how haven't been doing this for years. The price is a little high but they are doing a lot of the work for you as opposed to the LDS cannery.

I wish I could give you all feed back on the food, but it is packaged too neatly for me to open.  I am moving soon and want to move it in the boxes.  I didn't make any friends with the UPS man since it comes in 14 boxes.  Judging by freeze dried portions of Mountain House and others I have tried, this is probably more like a six month supply for a real american man.  (Insert joke here).  Delivered to my door with no tax for $800.  It is like buying gold at 260 an ounce.  If you are getting ready to Armageddon It like I am, this is probably the second thing you buy after your fresh water provisions.  Then comes the silver and ammo.   As mentioned earlier Mountain House freeze dried food is excellent.  A little too expensive though for a years worth.

I tell the a-holes I sold an ounce of gold and bought a years worth of food with some funny munny left over.  It is a fun response to "But you can't eat gold"  BYCEG.  The truth is though, I am not parting with the shiny stuff just yet.

The best Alcohol to stock pile would be Beer.  I was watching the History channel about Beer and Beer making.  What I found interesting is that the Women were the ones making the Beer in Egypt.  Beer making was used to store their grains.  This way it would not spoil.  Beer was considered in Egypt as liquid Bread because of the Barley and other grains used to make it.  It is said that the workers on the Pyramid were given Beer in exchange for their work.  So, buy and store Beer, it can be your liquid grain and your fluid intake as well.

I remember when my Mother would stock up on Toilet Paper (4 years worth), detergent, bar soap, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, plastic wrap, canned goods, pickles, vinagar, cooking oil, jelly, etc. (all bought with coupons).  But, when I inherited her stock pile and looked at the prices, I actually thought to myself that she made a good investment as the prices she paid were so much lower than the current prices for those items.  I thought it was funny as she had in her own way a little mini stock market in food.

Bought this - cheapest 1 yr supply out there (that I have seen).  It came quickly.  For a family of four, this is rather perfect amount of peace of mind preparedness - 3 month supply - long enough to easily weather a shorter term emergency that causes JIT disruption (earthquake or rioting (I am in LA), or flood or hurricane), stores very easily, good variety etc...  Water will be the big problem in those situations (other than rioting) b/c, ironically, you CAN'T easily eat most of this if you can't boil it . . .  If anything goes longer than 3 months, well, you have three months to fight your way out of the urban war zone that you are probably in at that point.

You definitely need to make a plan to boil some water.  Lots of options in the hiking/camping aisle.  You can find a propane stove that sits on top of a 16.4 oz propane bottle for about 20 bucks.  Propane is a very cheap fuel.  50 bucks in propane would be boilin' a lot of water.  I went with the sterno oven and fuel cans.  It is not bad and probably about the same cost as the propane, but I think I will get the propane anyway since in kicks out more heat.  Also get yourself a blastmatch for about 20 bucks.
