Days Of (Inflationary) Rage Are Here: Man Goes On Shooting Rampage After Learning Taco Bell Hikes Prices On Beefy Crunch Burrito By 50%
Days of inflatiory rage come to the US:
Police say a San Antonio Taco Bell customer enraged that the seven burritos he ordered had gone up in price fired an air gun at an employee and later fired an assault rifle at officers before barricading himself into a hotel room.
San Antonio police Sgt. Chris Benavides says officers used tear gas Sunday night to force the man from the hotel room after a three-hour standoff. The man is charged with three counts of attempted capital murder. Authorities have not released his name.
Brian Tillerson, a manager at the Taco Bell/KFC restaurant, told the San Antonio Express-News that the man was angry the Beefy Crunch Burrito had gone from 99 cents to $1.49 each.
Police say the man fired on officers during a traffic stop after the restaurant incident.
This is the first example of a domestic shooting incident following the surge in food prices courtesy of just QE Lite and QE 2. Just like in Tunisia, following the self-immolation of a fruit vendor, it will not be the last. And when we finally get QE3, then all bets will be off.

taco bell is not an unhealthy place to eat. i used to live with a woman who was a vegetarian and she liked the simple veggie bean burritos. when she couldn't face the kitchen, she would vounteer to drive to The Border, and buy, too! Drive-thru. took longer. her son and i would wait, knowing that when the order finally got handed thru the window, she would not check it, before pulling out. this happened a 1/2-dozen times, easily.
she would pay for the bag full of dinner and drive all the way home. about 5 miles. then, we would put the bag on the table, and she would hand her son and me our fabulous concoctions. then she would scream: "OH no! Not again!" her son and i would be laughing so hard the food would come out of our snozzez! Two 79-cent burritos, and they could never get the bean thing right.
about ten days later, they would hand her the bag, and she would just pull out, without checking, again. her son and i would just lose it!
if we lived closer to taco bell, those fukers woulda all been dead, several times over.

I'm seeing it now, instead of just reality TV programing, reality advertising. We follow the guy through trial, conviction, prison time, retrospective interviews, and all through the whole thing he keeps reminding us just how much he loves the product. At the end of each reality commercial, he looks at the camera and and says "I should have made a run for the border."

I would expect we will see at lot more of this since our school systems do not teach about inflation and deflation. I can not tell you how many times lately I have given the inflation/deflation speech to our employees. They all are bitching about increasing prices and want more money. Pretty soon, we will see more crap like this, until people rise up and educate themselves and demand sound money.
I am already teaching this to my homeschooled 7 yr old. When the price of a local pizza increased he understood why. He also has a silver coin and loves to watch its value climb. He maybe inheriting a financial disaster but I plan to teach him how to succeed in spite of that.
This would have been a zero sum non-event if the cost of bullets also went up 50%, but when inflation hits the burrito but not bullets, I say that bodes well for the revolution.

This old fool has a Sunday morning ritual that consists of gassing up, then a large coffee and a big old fresh pretzel. Putting aside the gasoline, the coffee has increased twice in 7 weeks and the pretzel thrice. What was previously a $2.29 cost is now $3.19. That's a 39% increase in 7 weeks.
Thank God I stopped concealed carrying when I filled up on Sunday morning. :>)

This declaration would always make us sit up and take notice because we knew how valuable mom's shit was to her. She was constantly telling us not to mess with her shit, which always indicated to me at least how very valuable it was. For her to offer two shits was a special event and 50 years later I still remember every occasion where she made this offer....though I suspect the beatings that came with her declarations helped cement these rare occasions in my memory.
I raise my martini glass to you Cdad and I hope that you reach the ultimate level of giving two shits.....which seemed to keep my mom's lower intestinal track clear her entire adult life. - My wife and I order take-out about once/twice every two weeks. In the past 2-3 months, we have noticed the quality of the food has deteriorated significantly, and the portion sizes have shrunk to the tune of about 1/3 I would guess
- This has been the case at a few restaurants, not just one
- This is not "junk" food, generally from a respectable local Thai or Japanese restaurant

I went to eat at the Smith on 3rd and Dos Caminos on Houston last week for the first time in about 8 months and noticed the portions were easily cut in half from the previous visit.
First they shrink the food int he packages, then they shrink the packages and then they pass the cost off.
True, I guess, nobody would have been harmed if he got his 7 buritos that were just a little smaller than usual.

I will admit one of my only fast food vices is that I eat Taco Bell pretty often but they have a nice fresco low cal option on the menu and I did take note 2 months ago at the drive thru "The employees have been given directions only hand out 2 sauce packets from now on"

Bigger shock when you only go somewhere sporadically. Was back home visiting family and went to a family favorite Italian place. Ordered a dinner portion of spaghetti squash. Normally could never finish it, this time ate it and was still hungry. Noticed plate was shallower and was still not even full. Oh and price was up about 25% to. Place was also abandoned, which was not the norm from a few years back. Margin compression is a mother.

My similar experience has been that a "decent" NYC pizza is about $20 now. That's a large pie that has a vaguely appropriate level of sauce/cheese and 2 toppings. You can get 'em lots cheaper, but they're very likely to suck if you do.
At a particular favorite haunt of mine, a midtown pub w/good food (which I sadly can only visit about every other month these days), the already pricey but large and very well-done Cobb/Chef salads have both shrunk about 20%.

Portugal's main opposition parties told the beleaguered minority government they won't budge from their refusal to endorse a new set of austerity measures designed to ease a huge debt burden that is crippling the economy.
The new steps are likely to be rejected in a parliamentary vote expected Wednesday and the timing could not be worse. A defeat in the vote, Prime Minister Jose Socrates warned, would trigger his government's resignation, consigning Portugal to at least two months of political limbo just as officials were hoping to boost investor confidence in the country's future.
"At this point, a political crisis is a big push towards the country resorting to outside help," Finance Minister Fernando Teixeira dos Santos said.
The national political crisis also threatens to set back Europe's broader plan to stamp out the debt market jitters -- leaders at a two-day summit starting Thursday will seek to ratify key changes to the bloc's rescue fund and spare Portugal the need to surrender policy decisions to outside authorities through a bailout.
The new European policy would allow the fund to purchase government debt, easing market pressure which has driven the borrowing costs of weak countries to unsustainable levels. European leaders hope the response will herald the end of the debt crisis that has dragged on for more than a year.
That deal, however, was contingent on Portugal implementing the austerity measures that are unlikely to survive the country's political standoff.
Portugal's center-left Socialist government, which has insisted it doesn't want or need a bailout, won the backing of the European Central Bank and the European Commission for that new austerity plan. The ECB has already been helping Portugal by buying its government debt and providing funds to its banks.
With the austerity plan at risk, Portugal's political woes are likely to sow fresh uncertainty among investors who are nervous about the 17-nation eurozone's fiscal soundness and prospects for economic recovery. The big worry is that the high borrowing costs will continue to erode confidence and economic growth and eventually threaten the stability of much larger debt-heavy nations such as Spain, Belgium and Italy.
"We think Portugal will eventually need to request a bailout," said Emilie Gay, analyst at Capital Economics.
The Portuguese government's insistence that it can find its own path out of its difficulties "are not very credible any more," she said.
Portugal has to find cash to meet bond repayments amounting to almost euro9.5 billion ($13.48 billion) falling due in April and June. It has had no trouble raising money on markets so far, but it needs to lower steep borrowing costs that are pushing it into a downward spiral. The yield on its 10-year bond, for example, was at 7.4 percent on Monday -- not far from euro-era records.
The debt market jitters are more than concerns for investors or governments -- they have a real economic impact on a country and its people because they imply savage austerity measures. As in Greece and Ireland, standards of living plummet as the economy readjusts to lower wages and prices to become more competitive.
Portugal is following a similar path. Its scrawny economy has posted average annual growth of less than 1 percent over the past 10 years. During that time, it amassed massive foreign debt to finance its western European lifestyle.
The main opposition party, the center-right Social Democrats, agrees the country must reduce its debt load and has consented to previous austerity measures including tax hikes and pay cuts.
But it said the government's latest austerity plan -- the fourth set of measures in 11 months -- goes too far because it hurts the weaker sections of society.
Among the measures is a freeze on old-age pensions which Social Democrat leader Pedro Passos Coelho described Monday as "deeply unfair."
The government has offered to negotiate changes to the package, but the opposition parties say they no longer trust the government because it didn't consult them before presenting the measures to European authorities earlier this month.
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Jorge Lacao said the deadlock would have "very grave consequences" for Portugal.
The austerity measures have prompted a wave of strikes and street demonstrations. Workers with the national rail company and the Lisbon subway are due to walk off the job later this week.

Living in Houston, I can confirm that a LARGE (no pun intended) proportion of the fatness comes from the immigrants here from Mexico. Apparently, the reward for actually living to the ripe old age of 30 as a Mexican is that you instantly add 120 pounds.

The people who run the United States have seen little inflation in their necessities and don't see why the average American would experience inflation either. For example: private jets, down 5%, mega yachts down 15%, huge estancias in Uruguay up 1%, Manhattan Park Avenue condos down 2%, Congressmen down 5%, mayors down 10%, and governors down 25%.
