Dear Wikileaks: Leak the Bank Records NOW, Or Forever Hold Your Peace

George Washington's picture

Washington’s Blog

Wikileaks head Julian Assange told
Forbes that the next leak will be regarding a major American bank. He
said that Wikileaks plans to release the documents early next year.

Assange told Computer World in October 2009:

"At
the moment, for example, we are sitting on 5GB from Bank of America,
one of the executive's hard drives," he said. "Now how do we present
that? It's a difficult problem. We could just dump it all into one giant
Zip file, but we know for a fact that has limited impact. To have
impact, it needs to be easy for people to dive in and search it and get
something out of it."

Indeed, speculation that the leak could be about Bank of America is going viral, being reported by CBS, MSNBC, CNBC, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Reuters, Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance, Huffington Post and elsewhere.

As Joe Weisenthal writes today: "Bank Of America Selling Accelerates, As Fears Spread That It's In The Wikileaks Crosshairs".

(Bank of America is the largest U.S. bank.)

But the Department of Justice has launched a criminal probe of Wiklileaks, Assange may face espionage charges, representative Peter King is asking that Wikileaks be designated a foreign terrorist organization like Al Qaeda, some have called for Assange's assassination (and see this), and Wikileaks' website is under attack by hackers. And Interpol has issued an arrest warrant for Assange on rape charges.

Unless
Wikileaks quickly moves up the release of the bank documents, it may be
shut down before it has the chance to organize them so that they are
easy to search.

Wikileaks could, of course, leak the raw documents now "into
one giant Zip file", and then - if it is still able to do so - leak the
organized version later.

Admittedly, if Wikileaks is really a "clever Psyops front", then the bank release might just be about unsavory - but perfectly legal - shenanigans. As John Young - the founder of long-time whistleblower website Cryptome - said recently:

“The
principal deficiency of Wikileaks is its lack of transparency about
its operators and funds, characteristics of spies and secret societies
up to no good and whose main purpose is to hide from public
accountability and conceal corruption and criminality.

Such
organizations always use a noble purpose and claim secrecy is needed
to protect supporters. In practice the secrecy protects the principal
beneficiaries, the operators and sources of funds, and supporters are
sacrificed to protect the continuation of the enterprise.

Wikileaks
has followed the lucrative model of the cult of national security, the
largest world’s secret enterprise, composed of selected elements of
governments, military, intelligence, NGOs, contractors, lobbyists and
supporters, identified by their clearance for access to classified
information.

But
the proof will be in the pudding ... if Wikileaks reveals information
showing criminal fraud by Bank of America, then they are heroes. If
not, they are something else.

Like the room at a bean festival.

Let 'er rip.

Changing the timing of everything would lead to more credibility.  If it was something being directed, a timed leak after certain things happening, and pegging an early 2011 date on it as a rough guess does look less than perfect.

But moving it up, would lead to more credibility.  Although, since it's being leaked so far and wide, and on such a delicious subject, OF COURSE everybody was going to be calling for it to come out now.

Hard to tell in white is black and black is white bizzaro monetary world.  But either way, I say 'release it sooner rather than later'.

Even if it was 'psy ops' for a particular gain, why anyone would call leaking information, terrorism, is truly jumping the shark.  I think bailouts have more credibility than that spin of leaking of information.

Keep up the good work GW. Don't be afraid to make mistakes in pursuit of the truth. Someone has to be laying it out there so the zombies have some chance of waking up and saving themselves.

Thanks for all you do...even when you get bits wrong I know your heart is in the right place and I respect your cajones to post what you post.

I should clarify. I have seen minor mistakes of yours pointed out. However, your over arching world view as presented on ZH is pretty spot on. You really dig and find fantastic stuff and I almost always agree with your take on things. My point is, even when I disagree with you or see a minor error (I make plenty), I know you are working hard to free people's minds.

Thanks for all you do.

The impression I got from the interview with Assange that I heard is that he's not calling the shots, that he's working for someone.

All roads lead to Moscow. They may be winding and they may be obscured by fog, but all roads lead to Moscow.

Question to Americans: is the "Exploring right-wing blogosphere" blog on pitch.com some kind of troll, or a honest leftist blogger?

If I had dirt on a TBTF and I was facing jail time and/or assassination, I would definitely delay the release so as to prolong my lifespan and/or delay unfavorable legislation.  Likewise, if I was an intelligence agency front and I wanted to further convince the general public I was sincere in my efforts, I would do the same.

I think this guy studied in a marketing course but never really followed through.  He is trying to create a "need" for his product, but the need is there.  By sprining the StateDepart docs, everyone is talking wikileaks.  Follow up in one week with the BoA goods and wikileaks will be too big to fail.  By waiting 3 months, attention dies and he will need to promote all over again.  Additionally, the longer he waits, he opens himself up to court action. Fail.

edit:  the moment I read about the exec hard drive, I thought to myself there is a building full of BoA lawyers  writing briefs on how that HD was obtained by illegal means and property of BoA.  A gag order will be in place in 24 hours.

HD: Maybe the lawyers over at AT&T could help them with that subject (It's good to know how the illegal obtainers think)

Tue, 11/30/2010 - 16:22 | 765389 Dr_Dazed
Dr_Dazed's picture

The whole point of Wikileaks is that they are not responsive to gag orders - they're a decentralized virtual organization that can put out the information in different jurisdictions and attempt to avoid effective prosecution.

As for your marketing comments, you seem uninformed - Wikileaks is already well established and attention is highly unlikely to "die".  Where were you when the Iraq war documents were posted?  Get a clue.

I have little doubt that the information they publish is true.  That said, i also think there is a compelling case to be made for the idea that they are a CIA (or some other similar organization) psy-ops organization.  There's an increasingly stark informational/ideological rift between those who consume MSM and those who are more active in seeking out information from alternative news sources on the internet and in the foreign press.  In order to bridge this rift, wikileaks has stepped in between the two worlds as a “legitimate” source for information, but one which collects and distributes highly sensitive information in a seemingly random (since it is collected through “leaks”) and chaotic way.  This lets the MSM avoid responsibility for handling the actual information that the leak contains, as well as adds an air of legitimacy to them for reporting the leak as news.  Each wikileaks leak is kind of like a round of QE: instead of bailing out the banks with money, it bails out the credibility of the MSM with leaked information.

It also allows whoever controles wikileaks to decide which leaks get published and which get censored...

Tue, 11/30/2010 - 16:59 | 765573 G. Marx
G. Marx's picture

Whether you or I or anyone else likes it, the MSM still gets vastly more eyes and ears than does Alex Jones, GLP or Veritas. The alt-media still has a ways to go before it can be a distributor of information such as this. For the doubters of Assange, please show us all your level or courage and risk taking. How much of your life have you put on the line for the good fight? ZH excluded of course, they have operated above and beyond the call of duty.

Tue, 11/30/2010 - 17:19 | 765657 Dumb Money
Dumb Money's picture

Ideological difference isn't just between those who watch MSM and those who pay attention to alt-media.  It is also a difference between the world that the MSM portrays and the actual world that people live in.  The more the actual world does not conform to the world MSM portrays, the more other competing voices can frame and thus shape reality.  This is why i framed it as difference between MSM and alt-media: alt-media is a looming (even if it is currently weilding little influence, which i'm not so sure it is) threat to the ideological supremacy of the MSM.

Also, i don't want to downplay the importance of the information that Wikileaks releases.  I was merely pointing out their conspicuous position in the general flow of information.

This ain't the alt-media, clown, this be the global hacking community, dood!

Cut your crapola already, stooge.  There's ONLY msm involvement here because the stuff was released to multiple newspapers, knowing full well at least several of them (Der Spiegel, The Guardian) would publish them, so the New Whore Times followed their lead, as usual....

Tue, 11/30/2010 - 18:23 | 765993 Dumb Money
Dumb Money's picture

I agree with you… with one caveat: there is a degree of separation between the MSM and their public source.  This allows the source to assume public responsibility for the information they put out and thereby absolves the MSM of (most of the) responsibility for it.  The manner in which they release said information on the internet (large, public dumps of primary sources) allows them to also satisfy the need of more rigorous truth seekers to verify their information.

This, and the fact that they operate out of a website (like so many other good sources of information), lets them blend in with the alt-media (and, for that matter, the actual world that people live in) and blur the line between them and the MSM.

I think that this line has to be blurred in order for “the system’s” ideological controls to function.

So if there's possibly personal and embarrassing information in this data, that has nothing what-so-ever to do with banking (e.g., office gossip) it should be released as well in one big dump before such information is removed? What about e-mails that are pure speculation or industry rumors? I think many of you are taking a lot of things for granted. If this data isn't released in a responsible fashion, it could contain sensational non-banking information that could be a distraction for more the more important issues at hand. It could discredit Assange's whole effort.

In your rush to get the goods, you might hurt innocent parties, if that happens you create an unnecessary distraction and possibly extend sympathy to the wrong parties in "your rush to judgment"? So far it seems Assange has handled the latest releases well. The cables are the issue, not some State department worker who was cheating on her husband in a bit of office gossip.
