Denninger: ‘nuff said

J.D. Swampfox's picture

I feel it appropriate to help distribute Karl Denninger's video response to the currently in vogue effort of the government-subsidized media to discredit those AMERICANS who question current government policy and who suspect that the economy will get worse before it gets better.

Look, Karl came from outside the industry. He does his homework and draws his own conclusions based not upon Economics Class, but upon his own homework. This has it's own (sometime large) pitfalls- but in large part I agree with his results.

Hell, he does more homework than lots of people in the business- and I respect that, even if I disagree with the conclusion.

And when I disagree with Karl every now and again (though it's generally on trading points) I generally read his responses in the classic "argument that is designed to establish a conclusion" sense. And not, as implied, in a pedantic "I'm right provide legally admissible evidence..." I think that someone who supports his arguments with empirical data should be able to request the same from his counterpoint.

    IMHO, of course

While KD's ongoing spat with Kneale is amusing, the bottom line is simple:

Karl lost my respect when he voted for Obama. It makes a lot of his arguments against the corruption within the system invalid because OBL is doing nothing but entrenching and expanding the regulatory agencies which enabled the corruption on Wall Street in the first place. By thinking that McCain or Obama were going to do anything to address the systemic issues which allowed the banksters to create this mess a vote for either illustrates either willful ignorance of the problems or a desire to fly behind the unicorns and eat the Skittles as they shoot out of its butt.

KD does say some wise things that anyone with common sense can agree with. On the flip side, he also says some absolutely nutty things that when challenged create an angered response. His positions are too Keynesian for my tastes and his visions of grandeur with the various protests are wishful thinking at best, a fantasy thinking they will have an impact at worst.

Until everyone understands that the political class will not listen until you hit their suppliers, in other words their political contributors, then the system will march on unabated and unfazed. You can have all the tea parties you would like. You can march on Washington on Saturday. In the end they will act like they care, try to exploit the marchers and carry on as if nothing much happened. Money is the life blood and until you cut that off, the system is status quo. Once KD, Beck and others grasp that concpet it will have an impact. Until then, unicorn on gang.

obviously KD is rough around the edges, but he is much more fact-based than the vast majority of news, discussion sources out there. his TF forum, as such, is diligent about being fact based - and i see nothing wrong with that.

i'd assume many of you have been on trading desks, so aggressive white males obsessed with poo jokes shouldn't be so shocking either. what do you want for your internet based group calling for dismantling (peaceful) of major government institutions?

i'm unfamiliar with those being banned for simply disagreeing. or having posts pulled. of course, actions like that would decrease TF's credibility. i have seen people go postal and get banned, or lie and get caught and get banned.

i can't image how tough it is to keep a forum more or less in order, and I have to say that KD does a darn good job. hopefully he read some of this and considered some points. if for no other reason, to help the skin-deprived increase their awareness as well.

overall, there is no doubt that he is a positive force on the internet today. TF is a daily read, and its getting better.

i bet even you banned guys go back a lot.

A lot of talk above about Denninger's so-called 'honesty' . Yes, he's honest about things in which he feels others (have been/are being) dishonest.
On the other hand, he is often every bit as intellectually dishonest whenever he's shown to be wrong. e.g. Just because he chooses to ignore certain evidence and unanswered questions doesn't 'prove' his claim that no evidence exists or that no one was able to present any. Deleting the posts presenting the evidence doesn't make that evidence or the unanswered questions go away but only serves to support his continued blinkered attitude - only for him to do a U-turn some time later.
He can't, state-as-fact that the MSM would certainly be all over any important issues and then deride their dereliction of duty when they're not all over just what HE believes they're conspiring/ordered to hide. His inconsistency and hypocrisy is astonishing at times.

In that respect, he's no better than those he berates in Government and TPTB. As a result he loses a great deal of credibility - which is a shame because it detracts from the impact his many and more astute critiques deserve.

Hey Cindy, if that's your real name, I've been reading Denninger's site for a couple of years now. I'm not sure how many times he's banned me now but his mad 1337 haxx0r skillz don't seem to do him much good.

Karl's a useful idiot to read but he's still an idiot.

Mid 2007: Denninger insists gold could drop $200 overnight and has a long-term target of $250 per ounce because rampant deflation will set in any second now. Gold was at $700.

Current price: just broke $1000. Looks GTG to $1200 easy.

August 2007: Denninger insists Bernanke cannot cut rates in wake of CFC implosion.

    Result: Bernanke promptly cuts rates.
Current rate: effectively zero or negative with inflation.

Most of 2007 and early 2008: Karl preens as someone going by the handle "Nothing" madly fellates him with incomprehensibly oracular promises of deflation and collapse. Karl eventually discovers that this claimed superduper newsletter writer is posting under multiple sock puppets (and as multiple sexes) and bans him or her.

Current position: froths at the mouth whenever anyone mentions "it".

March 18, 2009: Karl confidently posts at around 11am that Bernanke can't possibly start QE because it would destroy confidence in the dollar.

Outcome: later that day, Bernanke announces the start of QE. Karl posts a two-word post along the lines of "f_ck me".

Present day: Karl keeps screaming about deflation kicking in any second now. Price of oil breaks $70. Price of groceries, steadily rising. Price of gold breaks $1000. But someone buys a few houses in Michigan for $14000 each and Karl orgasms and screams "look, deflation!"

Yeah, his predictions are coming true. None of them were all that wild to begin with though.

Karl has a one-track mind. Asimov, you are careful and polite and you mostly agree with him so you don't get banned. Pika-Steph constantly fellates him, no risk of banning there! Try disagreeing openly and repeatedly and see how long your accounts last. Don't worry, you can always come back despite the mad 1337 haxx0r skillz he claims to have to detect banned users.

I am, as you say, "careful and polite" with everybody, or try to be.  That's how I like to be treated.  I do not agree with him to brown nose - in general I just agree.  In some specifics I do not, 911 is one.  Go back to 2007 and look at my posts - and our arguments - concerning it.  Why did I stop talking about it?  Not out of fear of getting banned but because I realized it was pointless to try to convince him and it was the wrong venue.  The same reason I don't talk about it here.

Repeatedly disagreeing about something that 1) can't be proved or 2) cannot be agreed upon -- no matter how much you want to "prove your point" is foolish.  I don't mean with karl - I mean period.  Particularly the internet warriors who seem to specialize in it.

Most of the statements you attribute to karl are either exaggerated or taken out of context.  Some are correct.  The evidence of every single bad call he has made is still there.  So are all the good ones.

"March 18, 2009: Karl confidently posts at around 11am that Bernanke can't possibly start QE because it would destroy confidence in the dollar."

Have you bothered to look at a chart of the dollar since then?  Particularly right after?   Don't you wish you'd gone all in short on the dollar, that day?

    Shrug.  To each his own.

EVERY SINGLE REASON people have given in these comments as a reason they were banned from his forum, I have done.  INCLUDING the 911 stuff.  Oh, except being a gold bug, I'm not that.

I argue and disagree with him quite often.  Why am I still a member?  Because I can back up my reasoning with facts and data.  If you REALLY think that anybody that disagrees with him gets banned, do a search for posts by "arcone" and you'll find that your opinion doesn't quite match reality.

Funny - I never thought of him as arrogant - just opinionated and well read. He argues a case with lots of facts, and that doesn't sit well with conjecturing types. Conjecture is the favorite tool of the mediocre, hump-of-the bell-curve, average-Joe, who wants resolution to discomfort without critical thought. Aren't we about through with conjecture?

hmm...lots of animosity for KD here. I've been around his forums and blog for a couple of years. In most cases, the people I have seen get kicked off have been just flame monkeys looking for a fight.

As long as you make a rational case for your argument he is always more than willing to take your comment, whether he agrees with it not. Personally, i think its a good thing as it keeps his boards a more rational place than most other boards on the net. I do get annoyed by the Obama hate...I don't like any of the guy's decisions, but people there take it too far...

That being said, Karl is not a very good messenger, and he's admitted to this more than once.

While Karl is generally always right on the micro level, I feel he tends to be off from time to time on the macro level. He HAS been calling for treasury dislocation on some level (but he's clever enough to NEVER put than in his official predictions). He has been wrong on that case all along. He tends to underestimate to affect that things that QE and low interest rates can have. While he said he predicted a 50% trading range on the SPX this year, he made it quite clear back in March that he expect further declines down to 500 levels and never really saw this rally coming.

That being said, we are all americans and we are all in this together. If "this thing goes down" (Bush 2), it'll be just as much our fault for not putting are biases, politics and egos beside to band together enough to make change...

I've read KD daily for about two years now. The comments about arrogance and intolerance are noted, but having been a public forum owner/moderator for some years now, I have a high appreciation for the aggravation factor of keeping a site within its design bounds.

Karl is many things, but of principal interest to me is his unimpeachable honesty, a quality sorely lacking in many places today (among them financial blogs). I've noted with interest the substantial changes in KD's point of view on several important topics, and find it expedient simply not to engage him on some of the hot-topic items about which we disagree.

It's a lively, informative forum. Such a shame that some thin skin makes it unavailable to some of you.

I am OK if he thinks I am fool for investing in gold but I wonder if he would be so willing to call people like Bill Fleckenstein, Jim Rogers, John Paulson et al fools for being gold bullish? I would gladly put their track records against Mr. Denniger's to see where he measures up.

Not to mention, his belief that people can't be kept quiet through the promise of wealth, and blackmailing, its a little hard to take.

Tell me, Karl, how often do people come out and say they were a part of organized crime? Oh, only the ones in witness protection? Hmm....

So if you threaten people's lives AND their families, and promise them untold wealth IF they keep quiet, doesn't work, huh?

Karl's made incredible progress in his thinking since 2007 but he's still almost a militia guy at heart. Witness his recent joyous spurting over that asshole who showed up at a presidential event with an assault rifle (who we've since learned is a Timothy McVeigh wannbe).

The problem Denninger faces is simple: he comes from the "goverment can do no right" school yet now cries "where are the cops?". Sorry Karl; you spent 25 years voting for the guys who sent the cops home before you realized THEY were the ones "fucking you in the ass."

    Fri, 09/04/2009 - 12:12 | 58855 Anonymous

Denninger in a nutshell - sometimes sharp and in front; strangely obsessed with anal matters; and sometimes utterly naive. Hard to give him an overall score.

Karl Denninger is sometimes very sharp and right out in front in some commentary on stock and bond markets - though he gets over-repetitive banging on favoured themes, he's nonetheless read much more often than people admit, as you can see other bloggers picking up a Denninger theme or stealing his charts.

Ugly to read Denninger sometimes, he is quite obsessed with metaphors dealing with anal sex and defecation. Denninger has written so often, of how Denninger wants to see Wall Street figures suffer anal rape in US prisons, and Denninger describes this in so many ways, it appears this is a particular fantasy of Denninger's ... he also puts gif images of animals defecating amid his columns ... not a blog for family viewing ... wish he would leave these fetishes out.

Denninger, for all sophistication on some matters, is bizarrely naive about others, with no lessening of his arrogance as he closes off discussion and as he rants at critics - it's becoming a standard joke on other blogs, just like you see above, of people recounting how they were 'banned by Karl Denninger':
    - for a long time Denninger had absurd and very naive fantasies of hundreds of thousands of people marching on Washington and closing down the government, as a result of reading Denninger's columns, not realising that such people would be jailed on 'terrorism' charges long before much else happened
    - Denninger is naive about judges and lawyers and prosecutors and the US legal system, never seeming to figure that these are owned by the same people who own Wall Street, the banksters etc.
    - Denninger, despite himself loudly complaining about CNBC and other media manipulation in stock market matters, at other times Denninger screams at people that some fact could not be true, because otherwise the 'investigative journalists' and media would be all over it ... Denninger doesn't even digest and generalise his own complaints that the media is a corrupt racket ...

    KD = Total DB egomanic.

He hits the nail on the head, but doesn't realize what the hell he's driving it into.

Yeah, I got banned from his forum too. For what? Mentioning climate-change in regards to Nuclear Power; rising ambient temperatures in cooling water in France causing them to stop running the nuke plants during this summer's heat-wave. Didn't even say it was caused by humans, just stated the obvious fact that we are in a warming cycle, not business-as-usual.

His arrogance does his message a serious disservice.

Contrast that to the AutomaticEarth peeps...where you get the same message without the masturbate-in-the-mirror style of Monsieur Denninger.

The worst part about that idiot Kneale's video puke is that he sounded a lot like Bush (who said either you support the war against terrorism, or you must be a terrorist) when he moved from saying basically that if you question this market and economy, you must not be a patriot. Evidentally according to Kneale you cannot be both.... More verbal nonsense from yet another CNBC anchor.

Though I disagree with people's opinions, I often look to their content to evaluate their credibility. I cannot disagree with Denninger in this video one bit. The accounting 'maneuvers' for asset valuation, the opacity of bank balance sheets, all lead us down the road of information potholes. Can anyone disagree with that? Can anyone disagree that the valuations of companies need to be questioned when their financial statements don't reflect the assets and liabilities that exist (i.e. level III assets held off balance sheet).

The tenor and tone may need to be mellowed for the common man, but people that exist, deal with, and work in the capital markets have found out that our markets are anything but free. How can you put on a trade knowing that the rules may change?

People say it's 'okay' because it's a one way street to the northeast of a graphing quadrant, but the price distortions in the stock market eventually lead to pricing distortions in the consumer market. Can anyone really say that the forces of supply and demand are allowed to work in a controlled economy?

Whether or not Karl is intolerant, or it's just the perception of intolerance shouldn't negate his message. If it were in written form, it may be more palatable. my $.02 fwiw

I could give two sh*ts if the guy is arrogant or not, or if he has an egomaniacal complex, at least he tells the TRUTH. He has not whored himself out or changed his style of analysis one bit.

Karl is a patriot. But, there are many others that DISAGREE with Karl that are also patriots. I'm sure some of the anon's on this board, like Karl or not, are patriots. So, what us "good guys" really don't need right now is too much division.

    Steve,

Whether you think Denninger is one of the "good guys" or not, he is the one doing the dividing with his intolerance of certain views that don't mirror his own. Not being able to disagree and still co-exist with those ideologically allied with him on economic matters is one of Denninger's major weaknesses. It severely impairs his ability to effectively present his position. When the messenger is a jackass, the message (no matter how good it is) quite often gets lost...

Not being able to disagree and still co-exist with those ideologically allied with him on economic matters is one of Denniger's major weaknesses. It severely impairs his ability to effectively present his position. When the messenger is a jackass, the message (no matter how good it is) quite often gets lost...

    bingo steve,

fact: people would rather go to a friendly, sympathetic, and incompetent doctor, rather than a competent a**hole.

i read for the truth, regardless of the source. KD uses math. period.

FWIW - CNBC is friendly, sympathetic, optimistic etc. about our financial cancer. to those who partake, enjoy the ride. i hope to still be alive to follow the economic hearse. you might say that ZH is my life-jacket...

    cheers

Oh please, can I get a flag next to my avatar so everyone will see I have been anointed by Lord Denninger as a true patriot?

This guy needs to get over himself. I think Denninger's just pissed off because the Knealster won't let him back on his show.

And what's this crap about CNBC going after him for copyright infringement. But I thought you were our fearless Uber patriot.

Wow, "Anonymous" =bitter people gone wild". I have said some out of line things on his board and he has never once called me out. Not once. You know why? Because I cite and source what I say. A few folks think they are on a Yahoo forum. Ain't happening folks.

Whats laughable is how much you know about his site and forum. Maybe you should stop stalking KD and get a life, and/or get over the fact you obviously were kicked off his forum, you whining little crybaby.

Hasn't Denninger been calling for an "imminent" bond market collapse in Treasuries for the last two years arguing that T rates would go to 20%?

How's that trade working out for you KAdoff?

I've read Karl Denninger's site and forum for a while. He often makes very astute observations regarding the economic landscape. However, Denninger is so arrogant and dictatorial that it detracts from his message. He only wants posters on his forum who agree with him, kiss his butt, and tell him how great he is. Denninger is a petty egomaniac whose personality hurts his ability to reach a wider audience...

"Denninger is so arrogant and dictatorial that it detracts from his message".
Yes. I've been reading his forum since the Bin Laden thread, 2 years ago. I never bothered to join it due to the emotional nature of his leadership.
Nothing & Sushihorn are easily as intelligent as this gent & far ahead in emotional expertise.
You may be a great techie KD but you are the suck at people skills.
On a positive note- KD has changed some of this stuff, reduced the frequency & severity of his dictatorial diatribes over the last 2 years. So I know he's aware of his weaknesses & working on them.
Job well done on the things you do well KD.

I agree about the implausibility of a conspiracy of thousands for 9/11 though. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense that even the janitors and the window washers would keep quiet about the demolition techs slicing up the building in the face of millions of media outlets who might offer them riches beyond their imaginations to spill it.

It does seem like they could make more of a case to whomever it may concern for financial conspiracies and convince them they are 'doing good' and you know, there would be less people in the know anyway.  Besides, if the regulators and law enforcement are in on the gig, who are you going to squeal to?

For the record, I totally agree with and support what Denninger is saying in the video.

That said, I would also say this:

Denninger just proved he "has no brain", and I quote:

"...just as I have said that anyone holding a single trade confirmation from the so-called "PPT" proving the purchase of index futures by the Federal Reserve (or Treasury)..."

    http://market-ticker.denninger.net/archives/1405-Jim-Willie-Proves-He-Ha...

LOL! Is it just me or are you really that stupid? Do you really think they will create accounts which can be traced back to them and then trade (read: manipulate) using them? The big banks are their agents and they manipulate the markets for them - plain and simple. Why the hell do you think the Fed has created such an enormous amount of "reserves" for these banks recently? I mean if you really think our markets are not manipulated then either you are naive (read: stupid) or complicit - period. Perhaps Gold rocketing past $1000 will shut your yap.

Ywah, gold bugs really hate KD. I wonder why. Bet it has something to do with the price of gold going up. Hmmm.....

Wilie is a bit of a whacko. He was just WRONG the other week about bank holidays. His newsletter is a crock of unsubstantiated rumors that scream BUY GOLD...after you PAY for my newsletter of crackpot rumors.

Of course he thinks markets are manipulated. Haven't you read his other posts?

    Give me a break.

    I still love you GG.

Thanks Cindy. It's not so much as gold bugs hate KD as he hates them. They are just responding in kind. Just try mentioning the word "Gold" to KD and you'll know what I mean. Also, when I first started reading Willie's articles they seemed a bit "whacko" to me as well, but on delving a bit deeply into things - stripping off the propaganda peddled by our government and the MSM - those "whacko" observations started to make sense.

You are wrong. Obviously you do not watch KDs videos, or you would see that he believe in gold above the breakout level.

Oh, I know GG. I don't always think he's fair in that sense. Some people have a strong need for compartamentalizing things. And there is a specific forum there for metals, I believe.

Wilie would do much better if he would reduce the tin hat stuff, but there is only so much "some guy, who is a friend of a dude in the military" a person can take.

His most recent missive really jumped the shark.
