Earl Upgraded To Category 4 As It Slouches Ever Closer To Wall Street
Earl is picking up speed as it is approaching the Turks and Caicos Island, having just been upgraded from Cateogry 3 to Category 4. It appears that while New York and its immediate environs may avoid Hurricane speed winds on late Friday, the city will at a minimum be flooded as it enjoys a 50 mph+ lashing. Either way, this will be a good way to New York City's emergency response system in insolvent conditions. Upon hitting Wall Street, however, Earl may finally meet its match as to who can blow more hot air. The funny thing about all of the efforts of environmentalists to "change our trajectory" is that they never anticipate there EVER being unintended consequences of the actions they take backfiring.
Case in point: I read an article in Scientific American a couple years back concerning CFCs and the Ozone hole. The summation of the article was as follows: yes, our reduced use of CFCs was allowing the ozone layer to heal over Antartica, but the unintended consequence is that now the Antartic ice is melting at a rate several times faster than before because all of the sun's radiation that used to reflect off the snow and ice harmlessly back into space is being trapped more efficiently by said closing ozone layer.

I read SciAm avidly, and I can tell you this...over the course of time, humanity has proven, empirically speaking, a greater tendency to fuck with things that we don't properly understand. That ozone layer hole might have been convenient in allowing some radiation to escape back into space, but the healing of it probably wouldn't be having the adverse consequences that you highlight if not for the fact that we've changed the composition of the air so much as to make a natural ozone layer a real problem. Considering that I could probably still read chicken entrails as a means of predicting global weather patterns with greater accuracy than the morons at TWC or NOAA, I think you're taking this one observation out of context.
