Egypt Revolution: Take 2

Tyler Durden's picture

Remember how happy the Egyptain population was to depose one dictator only to have him replaced with a ruling military junta, and how prosaic, not to mention cynical, our assumption was that the newly "democratic" country has three months before the country experiences another post-Thermiodrian revolution? Well, our estimate was three weeks off. As the video shows, Tahrir Square (remember it? the second black swan of 2011 after that whole Tunisia thing...) is once again the latest and greatest place to go, be seen, and occasionally, shot at.

And from Reuters, here's why Suez Canal concerns, so promptly put to bed, will likely reemerge within a month:

Egypt's ruling military council said on Saturday it would clear protesters from a central Cairo square with "firmness and force" to allow life to return to normal.

Speaking at a news conference, a senior military officer blamed trouble in Tahrir Square on "elements that backed the counter-revolution", a reference to people loyal to the administration of deposed President Hosni Mubarak.

At least they did not blame the snow. In the meantime inquiring minds want to know: just how many of the CIA boots on the ground currently in Libya were positioned there after "completing" their job in neighboring Egypt...

Some more from Al Jazeera:

Hundreds of protesters demanding that Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president, be put on trial for alleged corruption, have retaken Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square, hours after security forces attempted to disperse them, in a clash that killed at least one person.

By 7am (local time) on Saturday morning, army and central security troops appeared to have withdrawn, leaving the square to protesters who set vehicles on fire and began setting up barricades made of furniture and left-behind barbed wire.

"The number of protesters remaining in the square is swelling, as news [of the clashes] spreads through the city," reported Mike Hanna, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Cairo.

Hundreds of army and security forces troops had stormed the square earlier, in an attempt to disperse the thousands of protesters.

In scenes reminiscent of the violent 18-day uprising that ousted longtime President Mubarak in February, protesters and riot police threw rocks at each other, and security forces responded by firing tear gas, witnesses said.

Egypt's health ministry said that one person was killed and 71 injured after those clashes. The military had earlier denied that anyone was hurt or killed in the raid of the square.

Groups of protesters rallying around the southeast corner of the square threw bottles and possibly petrol firebombs at riot police, Michelle May, a freelance journalist, told Al Jazeera.

One of the main roads running east from Tahrir Square towards Talaat Harb Square was virtually empty, and gunfire seemed to have subsided, a witness said.

The military in a statement released through the state MENA news agency, said that security forces were attempting to enforce a 2am to 5am (local time) curfew.

"Elements from the interior ministry along with some noble citizens confronted the riotous actions and enforced the curfew without any losses," the statement read. "The armed forces stress that they will not tolerate any acts of rioting or any act that harms the interest of the country and the people."

A separate statement carried on the military's Facebook page blamed "remnants" of Mubarak's National Democratic Party for the clashes, and ordered the arrest of four party members it accused of "thuggery" during the sit-in.

Guns fired, rocks thrown

Most of the protesters retreated after the army entered the square, witnesses said. Bassiouny ran to the west side of the square, which leads to Kasr el-Nil Bridge, and found more troops entering from that direction.

On the road leading east into the central business district around Talaat Harb Square, protesters tore down the roof of a bus stop and dragged it down the road to protect themselves from gunfire and rocks, said Drew Storey, a neighbourhood resident.

Protesters and army soldiers threw rocks at each other, and at least four injured protesters had to be carried away, he said. Soldiers fired their guns into metal shopfronts, sending sparks flying and bullets ricocheting, apparently to scare away the protesters, Storey said.

At one point, he said, security forces clad in riot gear chanted, cheered and shook each others' hands after driving the protesters away.

Other central security and army forces had been stationed to the north of Tahrir Square next to the Egyptian Museum, which military police have turned into a makeshift detention centre.

For those interested in what will likely be headline news again very soon, here is a live feed from Al Jazeera:

The organization was founded on the premise that the most immediate threat to Islam was the Bahá'í religion, which they viewed as a heresy that must be eliminated.[2] The group also opposes both Sunniism and the Khomeinist concept of Velayat-e Faqih. An earlier organization was founded by Halabi, the Anjoman-e Imám-e Zaman (called Anjoman-e Zedd-e Bahá'í privately) which later was re-named to the Anjoman-e Hojjatieh Mahdavieh (called Hojjatieh for short) after the Iranian Revolution

Had to look that one up.

They are some deceptive pricks...hiding behind a "religion" for fun & profit.

The sooner the people overthrow them the better...the sooner people recognize pure evil disguised as pure righteousness the better.

I mean really...on what level...on what planet...is a woman executed by the state for a judge saying she did not resist her own rape by multiple men forcefully enough?

In what country are condemned boys & girls, men & women sodomized by prison guards before their execution as almost a perk of employment?

In what countries are homosexuals executed as a matter of course by their legal system?...no matter how the fuck you feel about homo's...execution?...really?

How is it that a female American reporter can be sexually assualted in the middle of a "democracy movement" in Egypt and it get's scant reportage?

How is it that after "democracy" is instituted at the point of a gun by the army of Egypt women going to and from the square are given a virginty check by the army and no one bats an eye?...we all know how this test must be administered don't we?

It's a long list of abuse to individuals by the "states" involved...I won't bore you with anymore details...most here don't have a fucking clue what this is or about...when a chick can't even show her hair lest she wind up in one of the aforementioned judges court rooms it really says all that needs to be said.

Edit; No "religion of peace" activists care to comment on the reality of the issue at hand...typical mindless bots.

I don't think anybody would argue the atrocities that have happened in the name of this religion (and many others) or the suppression of the people's rights. What I take issue with is the hypocritical stance of the U.S. and our interference in their politics. Some of the crimes you state have happened in many countries we support and are our allies. Others have happened in the Catholic Church for centuries in developed countries.  If the U.S. wants to become involved should it be only those oppressive regimes that have valuable resources? All the while supporting and aiding other oppressive regimes that are guilty of the same.

Can we get you to admit that Islam is a LOT worse than the other COEXIST bumper sticker letters?

It is the only major religion that harps on endlessly with explicitly warlike language about its plan where COEXIST gets violently reduced to just "C", worldwide, do or die.

Spare us the "a pox on all their houses" argument tarring all religions equally.   That is a BIG LIE that aids the spread of this mental cancer called Islam.

There is no moral equivalent between what once happened, and what is happening now. All you do with that argument is give political cover to the very people currently committing those bad acts.

And I don't follow your seeming point that if we can't knock down every evil dictator, we should knock down none.

On top of that, lots of arabs, well over a million live happily and heathily and richly IN Israel.  They are very pleased with their parents' choice to ignore the call by arab armies back in 48 to leave Israel, prior to the wholesale genocide they had planned for the evil Jooooos.    The ones who left live in the squalor and mayhem of the palestinian terrortories.   As to apartheid policies, the surrounding arab countries treat "palestinians" like dirt, as virtual slaves in the rare cases they are allowed outside their cages.   65 years of western country driven "aid" has turned the once sparsely populated "refugee" territory into an entirely dependent hell hole with an average age of 17, and no plan nevermind hope of supporting itself.    The arab countries, rich or poor, are no help at all to this thoroughly ruined people.

 Rodent,

Either you can't comprehend or I am not articulate enough. These things are happening now in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the catholic church for that matter. Yet we still support these countries. The U.S. doesn't practice what it preaches. We supported the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia for decades.

"Some of the crimes you state have happened in many countries we support and are our allies."

Absolutely true.

Mine is a statement of condemnation of both allies and not so much. Before we get all giddy over a "democracy movement" we should understand what their idea of majority rule (democracy) would look like...it will look like exactly what is there now, except for a new face up top.

"Others have happened in the Catholic Church for centuries in developed countries."

Developed western countries have laws that punish pedophile priests & rapists not enable them...I don't see a connection to the codified law of Islamic state countries that permit slavery, human rights abuse and subjugation of "minorities".

"If the U.S. wants to become involved should it be only those oppressive regimes that have valuable resources? All the while supporting and aiding other oppressive regimes that are guilty of the same."

I believe the policy has been one of interaction...trying to get the leadership of those countries to change their stripes...it's clearly not working, as all they do coalesce power and wealth toward the top of the pyramid...not unlike here, sadly, where law is for the people not the powerful.

What you have to remember is there are competitors for trade (China, Russia etc.) who really don't care about the fate of those countries populations or their welfare that we (as US citizens) tend to moralize and tear ourselves apart about.

When those religious institutions can circumvent the law for decades ( U.S. ) and centuries (Europe) then those laws are not really protecting. It is still going on.  I agree its not the same as being backed by the government and it would have been far worse had it been, but many in society as well as the church turned a blind eye to it and allowed it to go on.

I believe the policy has been one of interaction...

This would be the logical conclusion unless you look at history. We have ousted and implanted our own ruthless corrupt puppets over and over when in many cases the ousted rulers were democratically elected. In many instances the leaders we didn't approve of were about to or did implement policies that weren't beneficial to our corporations. The leaders that were our puppets would reverse those policies and tow the line for the U.S. all the while commiting horrendous acts against its own people for decades.

What you have to remember is there are competitors for trade (China, Russia etc.) who really don't care about the fate of those countries populations or their welfare that we (as US citizens) tend to moralize and tear ourselves apart about.

This is a very valid point. I do recognize this, but instead of the U.S. exploiting the country and installing or backing a corrupt ruthless leader that supports this why can't there be a happy medium where the U.S. actually helps the country and its people. Maybe the corporations don't make as much money and the U.S. citizens have to pay a little more for those resources, but both countries would be better for it. This would be a solid relationship that would do more to promote democracy than our current mode of operation.

"but many in society as well as the church turned a blind eye to it and allowed it to go on."

I can assure you a pedophile is dead meat around here...whether or not others didn't turn scumbags in for prosecution under the law points to their own moral shortcomings or embarrassment...not the law.

"The leaders that were our puppets would reverse those policies and tow the line for the U.S. all the while commiting horrendous acts against its own people for decades."

I'm not really into self flagellation. To equate what we are now, in this century, to the last century, is to compare Pol Pot to Cambodia of today or Germany of today with Hitler. It's simply not who we are.

"I do recognize this, but instead of the U.S. exploiting the country and installing or backing a corrupt ruthless leader that supports this why can't there be a happy medium where the U.S. actually helps the country and its people. Maybe the corporations don't make as much money and the U.S. citizens have to pay a little more for those resources, but both countries would be better for it."

I'm more in the camp of we have resources right here at home...which means jobs also. All that stands in the way is over regulation and a willingness to move in that direction. When you say "resources" I assume you mean oil. We have oil...we have natural gas...we have coal (about 25% of the worlds supply if I recall). The North American continent is not resource poor and for quite some time we were the worlds food basket.

That stated, I'm for pulling monetary foreign aid to most countries. A lot of this money goes to artificially inflate foreign countries economies and thus their peoples standard of living...which if it were to go down would make their leaders less desirable in the populations eyes. They would be vulnerable to overthrow...so it's really blackmail of a nations sovereignty in a way.

I believe the people of any nation should have their say in what they want...and live with the consequences of it internationally & domestically or change it.

Good rap Rick...taking the kids swimming.

The Freikorps fought the communists, and very few gave their loyalty to the Nazis.

Whereas the Grand Mufti thought Hitler was a damn fine human being.

You walked right into that. Moron.

As a passionate antisemite,[3][4]al-Husayni encouraged his followers to "kill the Jews wherever you find them".[5] During World War II, he collaborated with the Nazis[6] and, in 1941, met the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in Germany.[7] He asked Hitler to back Arab independence and requested that Nazi Germany oppose the establishment in Palestine of a Jewish national home as part of the Pan-Arab struggle.[8]According to an American report, al-Husayni energetically recruited Muslims for the Waffen-SS, the Nazi Party's elite military command. He was promised the leadership of Palestine after German troops had driven out the British and exterminated the Jews living there.[9] This would have meant the deaths of over 350,000 people. At the end of the war, he was allowed to flee to Syria as part of an attempt to prevent the alienation of Middle Eastern regimes.[9]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Amin_al-Husayni

And while we are at it, perhaps you can explain your obvious bigotry of equating a centuries old German word to Nazism. Why would you do that?

Further: Hey! Weren't you the one last night saying how bitchin Soros is? I'm starting to see a pattern.

Thomas Jefferson had his own run in with Islam:

"
They asked him (muslim abassador) by what right he extorted money and took slaves in this way. As Jefferson later reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:

The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.

Medieval as it is, this has a modern ring to it. Abdrahaman did not fail to add that a commission paid directly to Tripoli—and another paid to himself—would secure some temporary lenience. I believe on the evidence that it was at this moment that Jefferson decided to make war on the Muslim states of North Africa as soon as the opportunity presented itself."

If the U.S. really cared about democracy, freedom and threats to our nation then we should have overthrown Saudi Arabia (how many hijackers were from there) , Pakistan (nuclear weapons and a large poulation of extremists) , and many African countries which have commited a multitude of atrocities. It matters not what type of regime is in power as long as they play ball with the U.S., IMF, and World Bank. Many of the various and diverse Indians were stone age peoples when the europeans arrived in the Americas.   Ergo, they didn't have much to steal even at the time.   Two of those Indian groups that had progressed to farming were extraordinarily brutal and barbaric theocratic empires.  I'm thinking of the Incas and the Aztecs.    Today their descendants have, oh, plumbing, anti-biotics, favorite soccer teams, reliable shelter, roads, stuff like that.  Personally I am 1/16th Cherokee, so that 1/16th of me lives better than any Indian ever dreamed of living, and I'm currently between jobs.    The synthetic bathrobe I'm wearing as I type this on a "computer" is more comfortable than any garment existing before it, and it took maybe three hours of labor (after taxes) to pay for it.    It might last a decade of daily use.    My rifle is accurate to 1 MOA and the rounds are deady to game out to a thousand yards...i.e. it exceeds my capabilities, and needles to say with good care will outlive me.   My leather loin cloth on the other hand, flint knife, hand hewn bow and arrow, and war feathers, can barely survive one halloween.

Yes, Tyler, you called it, nice going. I have to say I always thought the story was far from over. There's far too much at stake and far too many people with conflicting interests involved. Egypt could easily devolve in to civil war. It only gets uglier from here. Yemen could easily go the same way.

Reports of demonstrations are trickling our of Saudi again, stories mostly silenced in the US media which of course makes me suspicious there's something to it.

Taken all together, we could end up with the mother of all oil supply disruptions. Worse than the embargo of 1973 for several reasons: at least back then the governments were stable dictatorships with compliant citizens. And of course the US and the world were far less dependent on oil imports. Stay tuned.

Wishful thinkers get no compassion from me.

America asked for this. Everything Obama is was known BEFORE the election. If you voted for him, you have no excuse.

What I do know is that the Obama sold by the MFM is a fraud.

And 80% of registered Dems approve of the job he is doing.

There would be a difference if we could somehow get the North East of the US to pull their collective heads from their asses long enough to vote out the RINOs.

Independents decided the election, and from what I can tell, their entire political philosophy boils down to "What's in it for me?"

How's that working out for you, you supra-geniuses?

if i might editorialize:  once we get a sense for the heart and mind of a person, here, the fact that no two zeros are exactly alike helps us, hopefully, to experience whatever the hell is meta-happening to us and among us, in a positive and engaging manner;  not by trying to scratch a true colleague's fukin eyes out over the damned ME, NA, or something.

That is not the whole story. Egyptians were remembering 8th April 1970 when Israelis bombed an elementary school full of children in Egypt killing many children and maiming many more.

Thousands of Egyptians marched from the square to the Israeli Embassy, demanding that the current military government end diplomatic relations with Israel in wake of the recent assault on Gaza by the IDF.

"How many Palestinians did Apartheid Israel bomb to death this week?"

Clearly, not enough of the ones shooting at them.

"How many civilians did Palestinians in resistance kill?"

Well, that's the thing isn't it?

Palestinians (Hamas, until recently the PLO) target civilians as well as military. They don't distinguish between the two.

If Israel had a mind to, they could wipe Gaza off the face of the earth and scatter the population to the four corners of the earth...but they don't.

Therein lies the difference.

The border crossing of Rafjah was closed by the Egyptians because of weapons smuggling. Now they tunnel around the area to bring the weapons into Gaza. The general Palestinian population suffer supply shortages because of this. These are indisputable facts dude.

Do you really think if attacks on Israel ceased tomorrow these strikes would continue and the border crossing would remain closed by the Egyptians?

They ain't goin away son...you better get used to the idea of an Israeli state surrounded by enemies...they have.

Typical response from an antisemitic defender of Zionist ethnic cleansing and apartheid.

Rather than acknowledge Apartheid Israel as Murder, Inc., spit rhetoric.

You didn't answer either question, right?

Furthermore, the land-grabbing Apartheid colony "had the mind" to destroy Hamas during Cast Lead, and their little soldiers got about 10 feet into Gaza before the Palestinian Resistance sent them back to their mommies.

Think about that - they can't even invade a prison!  Hizbullah destroyed them 2 years earlier.  Their little army without soldiers is a joke - all they do is bomb hospitals and kill school children!

The clock is ticking on the Zionist Apartheid state.  The United Nations' original sin will soon be undone ...

The military learns quick. Why would a "counter revolutionary" group meet in Tahrir square to demand corruption charges against Mubarak? A convienant rebranding of the protesters as a pretext to torture and execute the youth of Eygpt.

Sat, 04/09/2011 - 21:58 | 1154233 slewie the pi-rat
slewie the pi-rat's picture

so the egyptian military says (on their facebook page, too!) that these were pro-mubarak counter-revolutionaries.

aljazeera sez:  Hundreds of protesters demanding that Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president, be put on trial for alleged corruption, have retaken Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square, hours after security forces attempted to disperse them, in a clash that killed at least one person.

well!  there are two VERY different versions of what is happening!  here's a freelance report via aljazeera:   Groups of protesters rallying around the southeast corner of the square threw bottles and possibly petrol firebombs at riot police, Michelle May, a freelance journalist, told Al Jazeera.

eyewitness notes possible firebombs!  write that down!

but, wait!  The military in a statement released through the state MENA news agency, said that security forces were attempting to enforce a 2am to 5am (local time) curfew.  AND: Elements from the interior ministry along with some noble citizens confronted the riotous actions and enforced the curfew without any losses," the statement read.

ok:  we got counter-revolutionary pro-mubarak instigators who somehow got the crowd all jacked up to bring mubarak to justice for corruption.  nobody seems to know where hosni is, BUT:  the people in the street stayed out past the curfew, so it had to be enforced and was, too, without losses, and with the help of law-abiding citizens, also, apparently, out past curfew, themselves!

tyler's George Burns to the military's Gracie Allen:  At least they did not blame the snow. In the meantime inquiring minds want to know: just how many of the CIA boots on the ground currently in Libya were positioned there after "completing" their job in neighboring Egypt...

and that's just where we started, after tyler points out he knew this would happen, too, of course.

i think it might be fun to re-read everything here, but maybe not so wise to do so quite yet...

Yes, dodging gubberment bullets in Tahir Square is not asmuch fun as Dodge Ball. Sad stuff. No end in sight and watch the price of precious oil go to $220 as Nomura predicts.

What I don't understand is why Americans are not talking revolution against the federal tyranny.  We see people in the Middle East dying to have a better life for their children, but nothing here.

Good point. As I pay extra money in taxes this year for breathtaking percentages I want to hit someone. I want to fight, but there is nothing concrete there. I think the answer to your question has many parts. The basics in my thinking are (1)we are prosperous and we don't want to give up what we have. (2)We get singled out by government and publicy prosecuted and made an example, i.e. try not paying your taxes or just what YOU think is fair and see what happens. (3)Many like and prosper from the federal tyranny, e.g. public unions, welfare recipients, farmers, sugar growers, etc. (4)We fundamentally still believe in order and the system and want/hope to make changes in the normal pluralistic way.

I like number 4 myself but I am not an optimist any more.

Farmers. Sugar growers. Really?

How bout speculators, bankers, corporate officers, police officers, and the (ever expanding) list of worthless government employees (air marshals, snitches, "intelligence agencies" etc)?!

This is definitely worthy of a "I told you so!" moment for ZH and anyone else who doubts the revolutionary nature of middle eastern revolutions. They fundamentally have a culture that will not support a pluarlistic government. Does anyone doubt that if we went into Libya and removed King Qadhaffi that another one would replace him...not to mention six months later it would still be "Death to America!", "Death to Israel!", "Death to the West!"???

What is interesting is that most of the Middle East and even Africa probably had more prosperity, order and freedom (as individuals) when they were colonies. On their own they have done little to improve their lot.

So in Egypt one general replaces another. Is anyone horribly surprised? Even a civilian president would have to be supported by the military. Visibly or invisibly they rule.

You're still making variations of the NT bet today... High risk gambling on securities that have already made huge moves, never planning for the party to end. Parties always end. Bankers and insiders are selling into the high prices. To succeed one needs to do what they do -- buying when it's uncomfortable. You do the opposite and keep losing.

I have to say I always thought the story was far from over. There's far too much at stake and far too many people with conflicting interests involved. Egypt could easily devolve in to civil war. It only gets uglier from here. Yemen could easily go the same way.

The first thing in the morning ZH read makes me wonder? Is the confidence and faith in the Government and Media so destroyed that it can not be rebuilt? Not to say that I believe any one of the sons of bitches. Just sayin that some how some way, trust has to be re-invented.
