Egypt Shuts Down Internet And Text Messaging Ahead Of Million-Man Protests

Tyler Durden's picture

Per assorted tweets from the country that is only second (but certainly not last) in experiencing first hand the Genocidal one's monetary policies, the Egyptian government has now effectively shut down the internet, text messaging and possibly land lines -link. This includes Facebook and Twitter. Ironically this act of desperation in Egypt which seeks to prevent the ongoing televising of the revolution, would be precisely the match that would set off America on a certain path to revolution: not ongoing banker rape, not Primary Dealers stealing from babies, not Greek president G-Pap robbing your wallet... merely a shutdown of Facebook and Twitter (and possibly cable) and 300 million well-armed American will promptly go apeshit.

More from the HuffPo:

Reports are emerging that Internet has gone down in Cairo and perhaps throughout Egypt, only hours before the largest planned protests yet.

According to a report from The Arabist, "Egypt has shut off the internet."

Multiple Internet Service Providers are affected according to the report, which states:

I just received a call from a friend in Cairo (I won't say
who it is now because he's a prominent activist) telling me neither his
DSL nor his USB internet service is working. I've just checked with two
other friends in different parts of Cairo and their internet is not
working either.

The news of the Internet outage came minutes after the Associated Press published a video of an Egyptian protestor being shot.

CNN reporter Ben Wedeman confirmed Internet is down in Cairo and writes, "No internet, no SMS, what is next? Mobile phones and land lines? So much for stability. #Jan25 #Egypt"

The Los Angeles Times is also reporting that BlackBerry Internet has been taken offline in Egypt.

So, do those of us near New York City, San Francisco, and Washington DC go protest outside Egyptian and Yemen consulates, embassies and UN missions tomorrow?  Also, Egyptian consulates in Chicago and Houston.

Perhaps if Americans saw some protests/gatherings of support here they would "wake up" a little more?  Even recognize that we have streets to take to too.

Damn.  And right after Hillary said that we support the free use of Facebook and Twitter in Egypt.  State also had said that they'd been supporting the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia for a long time.... WTF?... but that's another story for another waste of space-time.
But whilst supporting the use in Egypt (and see where that got everybody, the precient overarching influence) that here in the good old good old where every-thing's absolutely hunkie dorrie, they (yes, the ubiquitous and you can guess who, I'll bet) want a "kill" switch to do the same.

Makes all the sense in the world.

I think I get the logic.  I'm a mythological nineteen year old male Egyptian college student.  I can't reach any of my friends on my mobile phone, so at first light I head out to the town square to see what's up and what do you know?... there's a million other guys doing the same thing.  Whoever controls the network obviously wants everybody to come to the riot.

We're in New England.  In one of the last two or three snow storms, Comcastic went down.  We finished shoveling, cleaned up, and all were wanting to be on the internet.  No Joy.

So we reverted to normal stuff, but couldn't communicate to all y'all.  Nervous-making.

V for Vendetta is just in my head today.

Particularly the 'someone will do something stupid' part.

I just keep waiting to see which particular stupid thing it will be that sets things off. Now is a year or so sooner than I would bet on it, but no-one can ever tell the 'when', can they.

**************************

I had to see it. There wasn't much left. But when I was there it was strange. I suddenly had this feeling that everything was connected. It's like I could see the whole thing, one long chain of events that stretched all the way back before Larkhill. I felt like I could see everything that happened, and everything that is going to happen. It was like a perfect pattern, laid out in front of me. And I realised we're all part of it, and all trapped by it.
So do you know what's gonna happen?
No, it was a feeling. But I can guess. With so much chaos, someone will do something stupid. And when they do, things will turn nasty. And then Sutler will be forced to do the only thing he knows how to do. At which point, all V needs to do is keep his word. And then...

Amazing, it is correct, take away people's distractions and then they will revolt.  The fact that people are going homeless by the millions, we are being bankrupt the list goes on and on and people are sitting back letting it happen.  But if sports were taken down people would take to the streets.

I guess the internet kill switch is definitely going to be on the table and passed now, they will want to do the same thing with no communication in the U.S., if people ever get off their butts and take to the streets.  But all the medications in our water and food keep us docile.

The Egyptian regime used universal access as the carrot to install universal kill switch.

THey upgraded to wireless as it came about... but the censorship regime started here:

Internet Service Providers

In 2001, the Egyptian government undertook a major initiative to make dialup Internet access available to everyone. As such, Internet Service Providers were given exclusive (07xx-xxxx) dialup phone numbers all across the country. Users dial in the corresponding number to connect to a particular service provider, without the need for a username or a password. The access charges are simply billed to the phone number from which you are dialing, without the need to subscribe. There are hundreds of providers, each with a different access number, but we recommend 0777-0777. Look out for street advertisements with other equally good providers' phone numbers

Egypt was the home of the Muslim Brotherhood, the original Islamists.  They have gotten hardcore and may have been strenghtened by Mubarak's extended suppression.   I have no idea how well armed they are but we may find out soon.  People who are willing to die are very hard to intimidate.  A hard core cadre like that gets the support of an outraged general public and it will will be a real test of the limits of the Egyptian state's brute force.

Brutal suppression at this stage will result in strikes, more protests, the de-legitimizing of the 'Govt' (even further), and incite acts of sabotage and the bringing out of such weapons etc.

For better or worse this regime's time is about up, so much for the last election's alleged  'majority' vote.

However, my supposition is the military will feel the need for an authoritarian approach to deal with its northern neighbor, and that a genuine democracy would just weaken and capture them (further) over-time into the hands of it's neighbor’s maneuvering for advantage.

And in that sense, they would probably be correct, and maybe why the military are not keen on the ‘people’s choice’. But that is the regime’s last hope, that the military will think they are better off with a dictator, rather than a nationalist consensus democracy fan.

I dunno.  Hamas was freely elected and despite all the obstacles thrown in their way, they have maintained the resistance, while the puppet PA collaborated, even to the extent of the murdering of it's own members at the behest of what you refer to as the "northern neighbor".

The last time the "walls were closing in on Israel" was 1973. Surrounded, running out of bullets, etc., the Israelis got real nasty ... something like "if we go down we will take the whole neighborhood with us (also known as an eye for an eye) courtesy of the French delivery of plutonium in 1957 good for about 250 bombs. Richard Nixon, not known as the best friend of Israel, moved very quickly to defuse the situation by supplying Israel with lots of ammunition. Things start to bad again I am sure Obama will know what to do with all the community service experience he brings to the table.

What I want to know is - are there any young smart engineers in the US who are preparing for when the givernment here shuts down the internet "for national security"? Can we hope that there are some out there who are ready to provide the people with access to information that the government does not want them to have, or are we actually at the mercy of the tyrants? Please don't identify yourselves if you are out there - I'm just hoping that not everyone in this country is sitting on their hands hoping it won't happen here, because it is obviously coming to a theater near you and me.

Muslims are just crazy people, they're always blowing something up, or revolting, or someshit. I'm not a DE Shaw analyst or anything but does anyone realize the trend? All these "revolutions" happen in Muslim nations. Iran last year, Tunisia, Egyps, and than you had the Hezbollah situation, etc....This shouldn't be surprising or world changing, this is just the reality of life. Next year some other Muslim country will revolt. This seriously is nothing new...

Everyone is all running around "omg omg omg" It's like bitch please. This has been happening in the Middle east for hundreds of years, and it will be happening in the next couple hundred years.

The US would be very stupid to shut down the internet, it would be the last thing they do prior to insurection.

Shutting off the internet demonstrates you are afraid of what the people might be saying to each other about you and you are worried the truth will lead to action against you.

Shutting down the internet would be a plain admission that you consider yourself illigitimate. That if Americans speak to one another it will be then end of the government and the system.

People will understand this instinctively, thus shutting downt eh internet would be proof positive to the people that you have lost legitimacy. IT would in fact cause and unite others to the same thinking, it would make matters far worse.

Also shutting down the inernet will cause the people to stop listening and believing you. Having such a power will be dangerous, it is gun pointed at their own heads.

Also, shutting down the intermet would shut down all the creditcard transactions.  Stores would close.  Gas pumps would not work. People would not even be able to get home and watch Netflix. They will be stranded everywhere with nowhere to go and nothing to eat.

Mark my words. Nothing is going to happen. The government is letting these people demonstrate to vent but this will not get out of control or becomes  a revolution as many are predicting. What's been happening there and in other Arab countries is Islamists and leftists have found a window and hijacked ligitimate demonstration against high prices and unemployment by poor people and now asking for governments all over the Arab world to resign and hand them the power. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Those demonstators will be crushed with the blessing of the US. If you think the US will allow the biggest Arab country a few feet across from Israel to become another Iran or Gaza then you need to have your heads examined.

Some time ago, I got into a free-ranging conversation with the Congressman who represents the district I live in, and the topics ranged from term limits to gun control. Somewhere near the end of our talk - and a case of beer - I asked him - sort of tongue-in-cheek, if the federal government had a contingency plan to deal with mass unrest of an armed populace. He laughed and said that one of the main arguments of inter-governmental gun control activists was the possibility that gun ownership by a mass population could threaten the government itself. I asked him if by gun control activists he meant congressmen and senators? Yes, he responded, it is a real fear in some circles. So, I asked, what is the plan, if any?

His response was that he was not aware of any over-arching plan, but he knew that Homeland Security had run scenarios on an internal terrorist organization threatening the government, and he felt as though that plan could be scaled up to include a significant percentage of the populace.

So, I asked, they are hiding a plan by scaling it down to meet the threat of a popular evil?

You said that, he said, not me.

Eventually, I asked him what resources the government would use to quell a national revolt.

The armed forces through the national guard, local, county and state resources - police and such, the enforcement divisions of all federal agencies: IRS, Treasury, Post Office, Marshall's Service, and of course, the FBI.

What if the people in those agencies defect to the uprising? I asked?

Estimates are that maybe 20% may, especially local and state people, he answered.

Sounds to me like a very detailed plan is in place, I said.

You know the government, he smiled, they plan for everything.

The next day his wife called mine and asked her to ask me to keep our conversation just between us.

My bro works in the military (AF colonel) and I asked him once how the military would react if forced to fire against the populace. He said the military in the U.S. is a civilian force and "politician" is a dirty word.

The military take an oath similar to presidents, and that oath is to protect the
constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Just not sure which way "domestic" would be perceived. It may be perceived as being the current government regime or it could mean the populace rejecting that regime. It would certainly be interesting to know which way it would go, although my sincere hope is that it would never come to that.

In addition, Egypt maintains large paramilitary forces. They numbered about 397,000 in 2007.[2] The Central Security Forces, and the Border Guard Forces are under Ministry of the Interior (Egypt) control. The National Guard, about 60,000, comes under the control of the Ministry of Defence

Then, boom, all of a sudden on Wednesday night, January 31, 1951, one ice blizzard put our magic fairyland of electricity out of business for over a week. It seemed like the lights were going out all over the world. Back we go to the woodburning cookstove and back to using the kerosene lamps. On the last afternoon of January there was a sudden onslaught of cold, sleet, snow, and ice that struck the entire area. This is no casual drizzle, no temperate storm nor even a settled downpour. This ice is a deluge the proportions of which one would not think the sky capable. I was on my way home from work and witnessed the whole thing. It started with an ice storm, a rain of sleet that broke tree and limbs and electric wires. Following the sleet and ice came about eight inches of snow, the weight of which brought down tree after tree and power line after power line leaving a complete blackout (Midgett).

There's going to be a lot of blood on the streets. Hillary will go on record about how terribly sad and awful it was that they killed so many people.. she might even make some mouth movements that seem to indicate a mild wrist slapping of the regime by the UN, you dirty rascals! Then the news cycle will move on.

Unless of course they people are successful in toppling the regime.. then the Hillary will go into panic mode, they'll dig up a bunch of evidence about how 'the terrorists' did it, because Bin Ladin is still everywhere, and they will invade. OK, maybe not invade, but they'll definitely shove a few jdams up their asses.

If there were no canal or anything strategic, well they wouldn't give a fuck, and they'd let them all kill each other until the end of time.

A "revolution" can never triumph in a country like Egypt if it's a "middle class revolution". The only chance a revolution like this can have is if the poor masses from the poor districts of Cairo join the protests, and the working class launches a general strike. The revolution in Tunisia only could triumph because the trade unions and the working poor from the peripheric neighborhoods of Tunis joined the fight. In contrast, the "middle class revolution" on Iran has failed, before the passivity of the working poor masses.
