Emergency IMF Meeting To Begin As Strauss-Kahn Retains High Profile Attorney
As was previously reported by the WSJ, "The IMF is considering holding a board meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday to discuss how to proceed, but isn't expected to come to a decision. Rather the board and staff members are in the midst of conference calls and informal discussions to try to figure out what steps to take next. It's unlikely that Mr. Strauss-Kahn can represent the institution during meetings while dealing with arrest and legal issues, at least over the next week, said officials. An IMF spokesman declined comment." We expect lots of headlines over the next several hours as an unstoppable European default meets an unmovable chaos. In the meantime, we have learned that DSK has retained legal counsel in the form of one Benjamin Brafman, a New York criminal defense attorney. From Wikipedia: "Brafman's profile rose following his winning the acquittal of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, who was acquitted from his 1999 illegal weapons and bribery charges. It’s nothing but a handful of connected bankers who are overriding the country’s laws, trying to be beyond the 3-mile territorial limit of the coast (for purposes of trade regulation and exclusivity extending as far as the reach of cannons fired from land), and now largely ignored. The IMF, by saying it is “international,” is operating above elected government and, thus, able to get tax monies from the Fed, the Treasury, and other countries without the hassle of a legal jurisdiction.
IOW, the IMF organization’s reputation is extremely thin and when something such as the Strauss-Kahn rape caper happens it can bring the world down on the IMF’s scrawny neck.
As for Strauss-Kahn, there is always a problem when you have a past, i.e., when you’ve been involved in press-ignored sexual dalliances, i.e., improper relationships with employees, and in charges of embezzlement, as in the 1999 charge against Strauss-Kahn in a case of embezzlement at the students mutual insurance company (MNEF).
