EPA: Radioactive Iodine Exceeding Maximum Contaminant Levels for Drinking Water Found in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts (And Other States) ... But It's Safe

George Washington's picture

As I noted Tuesday, the
government is responding to the Japanese nuclear accident by trying to
raise acceptable radiation levels and pretending that radiation is good
for us
.

Forbes' blogger Jeff McMahon points out:

The
Environmental Protection Agency yesterday reported finding elevated
levels of iodine-131, a product of nuclear fission, in rainwater in
Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. The levels exceed the maximum contaminant level (MCL) permitted in drinking water, but EPA continues to assure the public there is no need for alarm:

“It
is important to note that the corresponding MCL for iodine-131 was
calculated based on long-term chronic exposures over the course of a
lifetime – 70 years. The levels seen in rainwater are expected to be
relatively short in duration,” the agency states in a FAQ that accompanied yesterday’s brief news release.

“In both cases these are levels above the normal background levels historically reported in these areas.”

EPA
said it is receiving “verbal reports” of higher levels of radiation in
rainwater samples from other states as well, and that Americans should
continue to expect short-term contamination of rainwater as
radioactive isotopes spread through the atmosphere from Japan.

“We
continue to expect similar reports from state agencies and others
across the nation given the nature and duration of the Japanese nuclear
incident.”

The EPA also found radioactive iodine in milk in Washington State.

Fortunately. the half life of radioactive iodine is only 8.02 days. That means that the iodine loses half of its radioactivity within 8 days.

If you trust the EPA to tell you if radiation levels are unsafe, then carry on.

But
if you do not trust the government to tell you the truth, and if you
are afraid of radioactive exposure, you might consider stocking up on a
little extra milk and water, and then letting each container of fluids
sit for a couple of weeks on a shelf or in your refrigerator before
drinking. That will greatly reduce the radioactivity caused by the
iodine 131.

Specifically, every 8 days, the amount of radioactivity in the iodine 131 is reduced by half according to the general rule of radioactive half lives:

You'll
have to find out current radioactive iodine levels to determine how
long your beverages have to sit before the radioactive iodine falls to a
level you consider safe.

Obviously, beverages packed before the Japanese earthquake are safe.

(Because radioactive cesium has a much longer half-life, a couple of weeks of storing fluids before drinking them obviously wouldn't do much for that material).

In addition, if you're still worried about exposure to radiation, you might want to note that some vitamins and herbs have been shown to be radioprotective.

How could I re-write what I wrote to be more accurate?

Eliminate those two sentences.

Explain that consumption of contaminated materials even beyond the end of first half life could pose danger depending on the level of contamination.

Link to the EPA as I did.

Use this below to illustrate how the time frame for half life (lives) plays out.

As the New York Times notes, radioactive cesium is the main danger from the Japanese nuclear accident:

Over the long term, the big threat to human health is cesium-137, which has a half-life of 30 years.

At that rate of disintegration, John Emsley wrote in “Nature’s Building Blocks” (Oxford, 2001), “it takes over 200 years to reduce it to 1 percent of its former level.”

It is cesium-137 that still contaminates much of the land in Ukraine around the Chernobyl reactor.

Hey, you got it, fucking moron. So move on to making others in your life more miserable.

YOU ARE GOOD AT IT!

Don't blame the message carrier if you don't like the truthful message. Blame the assholes who don't stop it.

I figure the slow turnover and the long shipping distance means that the Pilsner Urquel at my local store was brewed pre-earthquake. Excuse me while I disappear for a moment to stock up...

How come these high levels? It's so far away. If this is true then what must it be like in Japan?

Liquification of the soil. It's why we are getting all the massive sinkholes. A lady was walking in her back yard and got swallowed up.

This whole planet will be irradiated massively before too long. We are still due a huge nuclear accident in US and I felt the New Madrid fault line shake up yesterday.

Agent Orange is harmless to use.  The air is safe at ground zero.  Depleted Uranium bullets are safe to spray everywhere....

Anyone that still listens to these asshats deserves fluoride in their water.

The Levels will increase if the problem is not fixed. The reactors are still putting out radiation. They are not cooled properly. As a matter of fact, from what I have been told by some guy on Youtube: Dutchsinse, (who seems to have his shit together on this), from them putting sea water on the rods it increases the cesium level outputs. Dammed if you do or don't. I am of the thought that all of us must consider that this problem is not over and most likely will get worse before better.  The other problem for us is that the jet stream comes our way almost everyday. It follows the earth's rotation most of the time. Which pretty much puts the crap on us. Many in California have complained for years about carbon from China's coal burning hitting them. They better bury these bitches soon. Concrete !!!

Jetstream.

It took 6 days before radiation levels where measured in Europe 20 x higher then normal.

On monday, we've received a pamphlet on what to do when radiation levels get to high, why we may not take iodine tablets preemptive... issued by the government. Sure, they do this kind of stuff just for fun...

I do remember Chernobyl. Nothing, a total media blackout. We only found out what happened 5 years later.

you bet they are tracking it, they just won't tell you.

Maybe if there are some meteologic blogs, you'll find info. But what can you do? Nothing. That's why the blackout.

ASK YOURSELF THIS:

WHY DO THEY TALK ABOUT THESE HALFLIFE'S THAT ONLY TAKE A FEW DAYS?

BECAUSE

THEY WANT YOU TO FOCUS ON THE GOOD STUFF, AND WHEN YOU HEAR ABOUT THE REST THAT TAKES 15000 YEARS HALFLIFE, YOU SAY: YES, BUT THAT OTHER CRAP THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT ONLY TAKES 8 DAYS!

Nobody could have guessed that When Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, he meant Nuclear Winter.

Right the half life is eight days but every day that plant is spewing into the jetstream is another new day of dosing for us.

OTOH maybe their discussion of the half life issue is an attempt to introduce some pertinent factual material into the hysteria?  Acquaint yourself with the facts and make your own decisions.

Dude- We have such sophisticated rad detection here and in space that even a smoke detector could be tracked across the globe, provided the background did not exceed that of the source, and not even mentioning the thermal recognition capabilities available from remote controlled air/space craft.

"You Can't Handle the Truth", per Jack Nicholson (Few Good Men).

This isn't even a good case of plausible deniability, or else those in charge are complete idiots trusting in the faith of their advisors.

Ok, send in the black helicopters - I'm ready.

Because Obama said so, whether the levels are high or not doesn't matter.

Right now he and his administration are scheming to use this catastrophe in Japan to try to make himself look like a cult hero ala Che Guevara and Ho Chi Minh.
