BREAKING: EU Energy Chief Says Possible Catastrophic Events In Next Hours, Mini Flash Crash Follows

Tyler Durden's picture

Trust the EU to come in prancing with all the grace of a shroomed up, drunk bull in a nitroglycerin store.

  • EU Energy Chief says possible catastrophic events in next hours
  • EU's Energy chief says situation at Japan nuclear plant is out of control

As a reminder here is how one says the same, but just a little more diplomatically:

  • IAEA sasy Japanese authorities have reported concerns about condition of spent nuclear fuel pool at Fukushima Daiichi units 3 and 4

And the result:

Japan enacted "Article 15" - their government agencies are now not allowed to give any information to the media.  That is why the EU and US must speculate about conditions on the ground.

What is the background of this "EU Energy Chief"? Political figures in high level positions are not idiots: they know their word have weigh and consequences and know how to play it. The question is did he get what he wanted?

Yep. Mebbe when they went to take a look at the radiation over the plant for the helicopter gig, the rad spike immediately overhead freaked 'em out.  That's the problem with our increasingly Ann Rayndized self-serving individualized consumer society.  The workers actually don't want to lay down their lives for the greater good 'caus they're all probably missing friends and family in the tsunami, and feel they have more important personal obligations.  On the other hand, during Chernobyl some of those Soviet era comrades that got ionized probably had guns to their head.  For some I doubt it was all about doing it for the Fatherland.

La Rodina... motherland.  Not to split hairs, but Hitler's thing was the Fatherland.  And yes, they were led into it with little to no facts.  Makes you wonder about this article 15 shit that the Jap govt pulled...

I saw a documentary where they showed how what's left of those poor irradiated bastards are still doing maintenance on site there, working to keep the genie in the bottle. They volunteered after the fall of the USSR to do it, since they knew they were toast and most of what little govt support they were getting dried up.

Well Jim I don't know if the statement id true but.

It's the only difference I see between Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Chernobyl was a live reactor and I presume that added to the explosive power.

By the by.

As has been pointed out elsewhere the second Fukushima plant (4 reactors) now has a 10km exclusion zone.

It's gonna go too.

Well I can't cut and paste it but a paper on an oil refinery fire in LA describes the smoke plume as being 6,000 feet high at a mile downstream and 11,000 feet high at 30 miles downstream.

From 'Atmospheric Diffusion and Air Pollution' Frenkiel and Shappard, eds.

30 miles, you say?  Yah, 30 miles.  That's about 50 km.

I think the British Embassy staff might want to get some plume modeling software.  The Chief Science Officer was briefed, I would guess, by a nuclear engineer rather than an environmental scientist.  They are using the wrong type of event (hydrogen explosion rather than fire) as the basis for their assessment.

I wonder what tipped the EU Energy Chief off? The fact that they tried dumping H2O from a helicopter? The fact that they tried a police water cannon? These actions are like me trying to fill up my car by spraying gasoline on and around it and hoping some of the gasoline gets where I want it to go.

Nice analogy. Don't forget to fill up the glove box.

Desperate men try desperate measures. What I don't understand is why, when they lost all power and were inundated by the tsunami, didn't everyone, including foreign governments, immediately assume the worse and begin rushing in everything they had?

It appears this wasn't the case until late Sunday, 48 hours later. I wonder if the world hoped the Japanese government, excuse me, TOPEC could control this monster. Why they thought 6 nuclear plants, three which were operating until emergency shutdown, could be controlled via a few emergency battery packs is beyond me. And I suspect we will never know the truth.

Very plausible. I'm sure Langley and the DOD have been very busy tasking real time satellite imagery since Friday. The stuff we are getting from Digital Globe is so tame compared to the half meter resolution imagery (some say it's now half foot) coming out of Langley/DOD. One can only assume they are sharing the images with Japan and the people on the ground. Japan is supposed to have their own sat capabilities but I don't know if they have real time.

They know when the firetruck guy gets out to take a leak. Unzipping that lead lined suit must be a bitch when ya gotta go real bad.

How do we push back? Because right now, so many flash-points, loaded with all kinds of negative energy, also built up over decades by said one-worlders.

market looks like a series of quick drops and rebounds ("1's and 2's") that is building up for a bigger sell-off.  lower lows and lower highs.

BTW, is the Treasury out of cash today?

Uh, there are no Hollywood tricks for this reality.  NO majic technology.  This melted fuel is nasty, nasty shit.  Line of site, it will kill you with ionizing (gamma) radiation in minutes to hours.  Some is so powerful that if you tried to walk up to it to grab it, you'd be dead before you reached it.  This is not to mention all the nasty shit floating around in the air, which is as bad or worse long term.  No we have a full scale Hollywood disaster on our hands without the Hollywood.

Keep an eye on weather/wind patterns.  Prevailing towards Toyko is not good news for business.

You have to ignore the noise.  I hear they have called the cops and they brought a water cannon.  They have the situation under control.

Casual dining stocks are currently sporting historically cheap valuations, and their growth prospects have never been better.  I know this because the criminal syndicate known as Wall Street has said so.

Falling futures in Japan mean nothing, and you, sir, are scaremongering.

Obuma, is off to Rio for the weekend..leadership in action..golf & bikini beaches Bitchezs what a useless human.

The Obama family will also take in the sights in Rio. A trip to Corcovado mountain, where the Christ the Redeemer statue stands (France gave us Lady Liberty, gave Brazil Jesus) is supposedly on the itinerary. What trip to Rio would be complete without it? If they do make it to the top of the mountain, they will do so with an entourage of secret service and Brazil’s Elite Squad, known as BOPE.

Guenther Oettinger.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/11/10/eu-energy-oil-idUSBRU011125201...

Said in November, Global Oil availability had peaked. He's a peak oiler.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%BCnther_Oettinger

Added some colour to the otherwise drab German political landscape.

He called for "stress tests" on nuclear plants yesterday.

Also yesterday, the German Secretary of State Guido Westerwelle used the term "Apocalypse" in a press conference regarding Japan.

Berlin (the Capital of Germany) sold out of Iodide on Saturday.

Either the Germans are hysterical and overreaching on this or they have access to very sensitive intel from Japan.

Germany was and is a close close ally of Japan. There are very strong historical ties between the two nations on a diplomatic and political level that the US will never be able to establish.

Put this into historical context.

I think it's time to panic.

nothing... because it cannot "blow up".  It will become an Old Faithful of zooming Nasties with half-lives, but it will not be producing 5 mile wide craters like a hydrogen weapon.  Look up Tsar Bomba if you want to read about a real fusion weapon.  This has the potential to become a very nasy dirty bomb event, and that's about it... none of that John Woo shit happening today.

quantify:  No fission or fusion explosions...  just a shitload of heat.

First of all this is something most of us have known now for over 5 days. This is what you get when corporate interests influence Governments to lie to protect them and not their people. Same thing goes on here in America on a daily basis, poor decisions are made to protect the Banks and Corporations which will have a negative impact on the American people. Now you have close to 30 million people in very dangerous situation in Japan. They could have made the right decision to have an organized evacuation 5 days ago and would probably have saved alot of lives. Wouldn't you think with all the nuke plants in Japan, a very small island, they would of had a planned strategy for an event like this? Guess not. Now the Japanese people are told to duct tape their windows and stay inprisoned in their homes for who knows how long? I don't think most people realize the impact this is going to have on the global economy. When you have the third largest economy in the world in turmoil you don't try to twist it into something positive in future economic growth and prosperity. When the Japanese people come out of their self made caves and realize the very world they knew is gone, it will not be business as usual. The area will be contaminated for decades and most Japanese people will be forced to re-locate to other parts of the world. Tokyo's vibrant economic contribution will only be something of the past and the impact will be felt across the globe. Furthermore people will see how the citizens have been failed by a government that didn't protect it's citizens in time of crisis and lied for days to protect the Corporations and investors putting their very lives and health in jeoprady. As I sit here and listen to the "Johnny come lately" MSM just starting to cover the long turn ramifications I can only feel for the 10's of millions of Japanese people that will be impacted and hope they find the courage and strength to move forward when the dust finally settles and they are forced to rebuild their lives in a totally new and unfamiliar enviornment.

1. The dip to buy will be after the catastrophic event, not before.

2. If there is a shortage of iPads the world will end.

"Possible catastrophic events in the next hours", indeed!

I don't care WHO this so-called "energy chief" is. He's a damned enviro-whacko ALARMIST!

The experts and the authorities have ASSURED us for many years that nuclear power is perfectly safe, and that should be enough for anyone. But the liberal socialist greenies are trying to turn this into a big thing to scare the herd so they can impose their despotic policies on the USA.

It's just like trav7777 said in #1059186: "the situation on the ground is obviously dire. But, let's just look at some facts...despite 4 meltdowns in progress, we are yet to see a major radiation excursion."

There you have it! The situation on the ground is dire, but the situation on the ground is NOT dire.

Please let's all RELAX, get rational, and return to business as usual.
