Idea for ZH. Have a new feature called something like "next to fight" where people here comment live on the market and their opinion. Much like Yahoo message boards about equities. People love to exchange ideas. The point is to discuss what the markets are doing now, what is happening, what people are thinking, buying, selling or where the indexes are going. This should be on the side bar and probable limited to 100 words. I don't know if your servers can handle it, but I think it would be so attractive - your ratings will blow out.

"I have a sign in front of my house (18000 cars a day traffic) that reads, Blumental - Coward LIAR"
Just so you know how I think.
supurb idea. One man cant watch but so many things.a heads up type of tips or what someone is watching happen or seeing come across the wires etc. could be invaluable..Great idea...
Something like that already exists in ZH universe, and its operational for almost a year now. Too bad not many people know about that feature of ZH. Its not listed on this site, but if you put your mind to it you will find it. Some of us discuss markets live during trading sessions. And you have a live data feed about all indexes, stocks, commodities and ETFs.
if i have around $500,000. US dollars, can i be making any money anywhere?
i have always had my money managed, last one was Bernstein. but someone told me to go all cash, cause all they do is put you into their buddies financial stocks. guess, i am just like everybody else, no where to make money. i don't know how to trade plus i don't know how to short. stupid me, maybe go back to bernstein. they made me quite a lot in 2007.
Id go with real estate (suggestion from some elders who are retiring wonderfully and have had their share of recessions and booms&busts - and never had a penny in stocks).
Extremely dependent on where you're located, but buying a below mkt price rental property would bring in some good gains. Don't expect it to appreciate in notional value as quick as the Dow, but youll be collecting your 'yield' so to speak in the form of rent, and you can always increase that about 5-10%/year (again depends on your state laws). Does require a bit of work, but you can hire a landlord to do this for you if you've never done it before, or learn on the fly, not too hard of a job. Start off with a triplex (3-app) and take it from there. Soon as you get to 6-family homes and higher, the cap rate (ratio of income brought in to orig. cost) starts increasing greatly. For even more gains, you can live in one of the apartments, essentially for free (the x# of others will be paying your mortgage {or in your case, for day-to-day needs since you're fairly liquid}).
Im taking this from my parents btw, were in Canada and my father, at 80 yrs old now, still only believes in rental properties and has never invested in any stock or bond in his life. I have taken a somewhat opposing view, having been to b-school, and had my fair share of gains and losses in equities, and only to come back to the point he always makes: you can lose a bit on a bad tenant, a roof to fix, or a bad year of home price decreases, but youll never lose the monthly rent that is raked in each month, or the appreciation which in the long-run is inevitable for homes. Since im still young im just saving up some $ here and there, and day trading a bit since i would never ever invest long-term after actively tracking the markets for about 2 years now, and also coming to realizations i never would have thanks to ZH and its posters.
Seeing as how the States are in a much better condition now from the buyer's perspective, there are some real bargains out there. FL, AZ, TN to name a few. Im not too familiar with other states as my exposure is limited from only having visited these few on business purposes, but i hear Cali has some bargain-hunting deals as well.
Finally, if youre in Canada, we haven't been as hard (hardly at all actually) by the 2008 dip - besides our stock markets which are almost 1:1 with yours. Home prices haven't fallen by much and our economy is growing. I notice a lot more condominiums being built than rental properties. I suppose the new trend is to own everything instead of giving rent (just as leasing cars has decreased as well). Dont know yet if its a good thing as supply of rental properties has decreased, but on the flip side demand (and supply) of condos has increased.
Anyway, good luck with your search for alpha. I could never justify giving it to a MF seeing as how their fees are what makes them the most money and not their great stock picks, but to each their own.
thanks øpower
did the landlord thing my whole life.
sick of it. sold my house i lived in for over 30 years.
kinda lost† but i know i can be found.
Sure thing! And yes it does tend to be tiresome running around after rent, getting a bad tenant, dealing with bureaucracy which tells YOU how to run your own show, etc etc. So totally understandable.
putbuyer: Yahoo message boards tend to get loaded with noise.
Too many people who have nothing to say but just want to post something.
ZeroHedge does not want to go there.
Found iron ore spot prices here

I thought I would feel GREAT making tons of $ as the market collapsed but now realizing what others will go through I think this explains my feelings- http://bit.ly/czwS5h enjoy and to think the carnage hasn't even started yet...
I knew I would'nt feel great either.
I tried...and still try to explain the monetary whore that fractional reserve banking is, especially combined with government hedonic accounting methods...it's no use really, but we should keep trying to inform IMO.
Otherwise, I've resigned myself to wagering on the guy in the middle out there on the ledge...they're going to jump anyways.
It is what it is.
It is probably easier to explain money and banking to a hungry cat. They will listen quite intently.
