Statement of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs
Last night, intelligence and law enforcement agencies discovered potential suspicious packages on two planes in transit to the United States. Based on close cooperation among U.S. government agencies and with our foreign allies and partners, authorities were able to identify and examine two suspicious packages, one in East Midlands, United Kingdom, and one in Dubai. Both of these packages originated from Yemen. As a result of security precautions triggered by this threat, the additional measures were taken regarding the flights at Newark Liberty and Philadelphia International Airports.
The President was notified of a potential terrorist threat on Thursday night at 10:35, by John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism. The President directed U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and the Department of Homeland Security, to take steps to ensure the safety and security of the American people, and to determine whether these threats are a part of any additional terrorist plotting. The President has received regular updates from his national security team since he was alerted to the threat.
PETA is happy to announced that no previous administrations were disparaged (yet) in the disarming of this "potential terrorism threat."

If one studies the actualities of terrorism it would be silly to give them any air time for you are:
1. Encouraging it
2. Showing that any little thing done will at once get the spotlight shown upon it thus the perps KNOW there will be coverage which will thus magnify the terror.
If the idea is to discourage acts of terror that last thing you would do would be to give it unlimited air time.

My guess is this type of "terrorist activity" is constantly happening. The world is in no way short of idiots and sick people who get their kicks in strange ways. The activity is usually concealed for precisely the points you make. Occasionally, for political and general herding purposes, it is allowed to float to the surface.

Watch what happens next. More security inside the US, allowing Postal Service to inspect all parcels. I never use UPS - too expensive - but I think you have to bring packages to their offices open so they can inspect them. At least that's how it was in the immediate aftermath of 9-11.
My best guess is that about 15 banks are going under later today and this is their way of hiding the fact that America is Land of the Glee and Home of the Knave, and that your bank will be closed on Monday.

Who discovered these packages and how? Surely we don't have intelligence agent examining packages in flight. What was so suspicious about these packages? Militants excel at hiding IED daily, did they forget, or were they perhaps drunk?
AP is now reporting these packages originated in Yemen, interesting indeed. Reports they were addressed to Jewish organizations add another twist. The packages will have contained dirty bombs by this weekend.
