A First in the Mainstream Media: Apple’s Flagship Product Loses In a Comparison Review to HTC’s Google-Powered Phone
What more can be said? See the Cnet review and if you haven’t done so already, review my opinions on the same:
- There Is Another Paradigm Shift Coming in Technology and Media: Apple, Microsoft and Google Know its Winner Takes All
- The Mobile Computing and Content Wars: Part 2, the Google Response to the Paradigm Shift
- An Introduction to How Apple Apple Will Compete With the Google/Android Onslaught
- Don’t Count Microsoft Out of the Ultra-Mobile Computing Wars Just Yet
- This article should drive the point home: An iPhone 4 Recall Will Hurt Apple More By Opening Additional Opportunity for Android Devices Than Increased Expenses
Apple is quickly losing its grip on what is, by far, its most profitable franchise…
And the next comparison (and probably the next three after that) will
be between two Android phones because Apple will not have anything new
for at least one year (except the iOS 4.1 SDK that is already out – that
was fast) and RIM, and Nokia will probably be forced to adopt Android
as well.

Google just pulled the plug on the Nexus One.
Here's a no brainer: short GOOG when the market opens tomorrow,
than use that day trade moolah to buy an iPhone.
Oh, here's another no brainer: short AAPL too.
Thanks for pointing out this interesting head-to-head comparison. The only slight drawback I see in the HTC Evo is that IT IS ON FUCKING SPRINT THE NETWORK THAT MAKES AT&T LOOK GOOD. Other than that tiny point a well-balanced review.
Interesting that most if not all the pro or tolerant of Apple posters have been junked.
You stirred up a little storm in a teacup Reggie. Probably intentionally.
There are two videos on this link that sum up the irrational, retarded attitudes towards plastic and wires that sum up the position and merits of this thread and a thousand others just like it on the intertubes.
http://techcrunch.com/2010/07/01/best-buy-iphone-4-evo-4g/
Computers, TV's, Phones etc etc. are fucking appliances. They either do what you want or don't. If you are happier with a Mac over a MS machine or Linux box. So fucking what?
If you get emotional over stuff like this then you are piss poor engineers and probably worse traders.
IDC:
"Apple shipped an estimated 1.618 million Macs in the June quarter, good for an 8.8 percent domestic market share. Apple finished in fourth place, an improvement from last quarter, when the company shipped 1.13 million units and took fifth place with a 6.4 percent market share."
It keeps growing and growing and growing.
And with such a small percentage of the overall market, it has a long way to keep on growing... very profitably too, I might ad.
By the way Reggie... any numbers on how developers are making money programming apps for Android? HA! They are not. We make our money by making apps first on the iPhone than doing a lowest common denominator port for all the different android permutations.. nightmare. Luckily the people we do apps for pay us and not the market of Android users.
Apple also just bought two mapping companies.
You are looking where the puck is now... Apple again is looking further out in time.
Apple made the same mistake it did vs the IBM PC long ago. By keeping their processor propriatary, they lost the desktop market although they invented it with the Apple IIe.
Now with the Android OS, Google has made the OS open, and anyone can put it on their handheld. Apple will be swamped by Android phones.
I wouldn't bet against Google.
I would count Microsoft out despite their might.
Apple sucks. Always has, always will.
The ghost of Foxconn sucidees comes to bite apple in the Backside.
When something gets to be as cultish as Apple, the rotten core is bound to show up sooner or later.
Later in this case.
Their products are terrible from a manufacturing standpoint, pretty from a design one.
ORI
http://aadivaahan.wordpress.com
been using apple products since the 8th grade.
meister steve rimjobs can suck my adam's apple.
never in this lifetime will i give another nickel to that corporation.
(p.s.s.t. stevie boy, your OS can run on a $200 acer...ha)
I hate Apple & the cult following of its products for so many reasons! I just saw this on CNET & it made my day
Reggie's looking for a reaction factor, why else keep bashing the iPhone.
Also, as with any open system the threat of malware is possible.
Anyone having browser problems. Tyler reported on another thread
"One of google's ads includes some javascript based malware. we have attempted to contact them about it. "
Coming to an Android near you.
I have a Google/HTC Nexus One w/ 2.2 has the same snapdragon processor... great phone, never owned an iPhone so can't compare, but I've always been slightly anti-apple.
Wasn't AAPL in the tank before the device product market (itunes, ipod, iphone, etc.) took off in 2001? Will AAPL go back in the crapper once the competition get the focus and tuned in? (remember the days of $7 stock prices). The current share price is assuming that AAPL will continue to dominate, but will it eventually suffer the a bad fate it experienced when the PC market dust was settled?
I've yet to see this admitted to officially - but Apple sells to women and young girls, who don't know programming from a hole in the ground. They buy the stuff because it is pretty and because it works without any input from them. That attitude is coming from a fairly large network of girlfriends and their mothers that my 9th grade daughter has. So long as this market continues to exist, Apple will do fine. It won't take over the world. But then, it is not trying to. They seem content to keep super high margins and make money.
THE BEST I-PHONE vs EVO COMPARISON:
http://www.break.com/index/iphone-4-vs-htc-evo.html
I agree that AAPL is a bubble (not just the stock, but the whole ecosystem). The iPhone days are numbered because there are simply too many folks producing Android devices. If you compare the number of iPhones sold versus the number of Android phones sold, Android wins by a 2x margin. See the latest comScore market research where Android is taking market share from every (yes, EVERY) smart phone operating system out there by a 4-to-1 margin. Even iOS market share is declining to Android.
There are over 85 Android devices, and there's only 1 iPhone. Eventually Apple will lose the numbers game until they start their license their product, which they NEVER have and probably never will.
The IT market, in any segment, will always contain competitors. Apple has achieved a vertical design integration and software integration which really isn't available as an option to any other company but MS. Apple clearly seeks market penetration, but need not dominate the market, especially the low end or the hacker-prone and confusing market of fully open systems. There is a very large segment who want the mix Apple provides. I'm actually surprised the Windows v Mac v Linux type emotions arise in the phone world. Who cares what other people use? The market is huge and diversity will exist forever within it. Windows still outsells OSX. It doesn't matter to anyone. The whole issue is passé. As phones they all work fine. As program and entertainment environments, there will always be several phone cultures. The networks standards are written and controlled by others, not Apple or Google.
As an AAPL stockholder who is a non-techie, what attracts me is that it is CHEAP on a GARP basis especially adjusted for Apple's financial strength. As to Droid vs iPhone, it's interesting but secondary. GOOG is not a stock play on Droid. And iPhone can grow like crazy even if it comes in second to Droid--what counts is how fast smart phones displace dumb ones.
What most people don't "get" about Apple is the following they have. I know people who will only buy Apple products given the choice and have held Apple stock long before Steve Jobs came back.
Simply put Apple DO provide great products. Occasionally they screw up like all companies. Most of the time they do right by their customers when they do screw up.
This is not anecdotal evidence. I have a sideline business repairing Macs and selling Macs. So I am very familiar with Apple repairing stuff that Dell would tell you to take a hike for.
As a professional Systems/ Network guy I keep Apple out of the corporation but only use Apple at home. One insures my job is still there every morning because MS stuff is so fragile and because Apple network stuff is really annoying. I use Apple at home so that I don't come home to broken machines to fix.
When Apple finally get the networking into existing MS networks stuff right then you will see some serious sales numbers on their PC's.
When Apple gets around to having an SQL database, that's when I jump to the Mac. My daughter is a complete Apple fan, and Apple is to be commended for keeping things simple for end-users.
Still, my next cellphone will likely be a droid as it looks like there will be apps I can use, and not have to put up with Apple's Genius Bar (whatever they are) geeks who DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT AN SQL DATABASE EVEN WAS.
There are good SQL databases available. The free ones, for example Postgres, come to mind. There are also good SQLDB-managing tools.
Apple is in a bubble.
How many months have been saying this...
Where is Harry?
Harry, Apple is in a bubble!
I've had the DroidX for about two weeks now as part of a demo for our business, and its simply the best phone I have ever come across. As a longtime blackberry user, its simply head and shoulders above the blackberry platform. Now that's not saying a whole lot, but the DroidX platform will be a big hit with the 800 plus blackberry users I have under my control simply because of its flexibility, and the fact that we can develop apps for it in house. Can I do that with the iphone, hell no. I can't even do that with the iPad. Shit you can't even develop an app for the iPad with the iPad. The iPad (and most of apples products) are geared towards the lowest common demoniator of computer user. Its the computer you give to grandma because shes too fucking stupid to use Linux.
Now that said, in principle, I refuse to buy anything Apple simply because they lock you into their app store, and their choice of provider. That's bullshit. It's a big fuck you to the 1984 ad, and frankly it should go against everything Apple used to stand for. But now days its all about proping up the zombie jobs and his ego.
I'll tell you one thing, I can hold the DroidX inbetween my asscheeks and still get call signal.
LMAO!
I'll tell you one thing, I can hold the DroidX inbetween my asscheeks and still get call signal.
Thank god for that. If your head is up your ass, that trick might make it possible to still have a conversation.
I've had the DroidX for about two weeks now as part of a demo for our business, and its simply the best phone I have ever come across...
Of course it is - it's the latest phone to hit the market. Are you going to compare it to one of your Blackberries from 2, 4 or 6 years ago? Plus, you've never owned an iPhone, so you're comparing it to second-rate technology.
...the fact that we can develop apps for it in house. Can I do that with the iphone, hell no. I can't even do that with the iPad. Shit you can't even develop an app for the iPad with the iPad.
No one is using their phone or an iPad to create apps - people use their primary computers for that.
The iPad (and most of apples products) are geared towards the lowest common demoniator of computer user.
Just because a gadget is intuitive and easy to use doesn't mean that it's geared for grandmas and stupid people. It's simply better technology.
If a professor of quantum astrophysics can explain the Heisenberg Principle to your grandmother in a way that she can understand it, does that discredit the merits of the professor? If Apple has the ability to enable your grandmother to use the latest computer technology, I would classify that as amazingly brilliant.
You simply hate Apple for whatever reason, and you're trying to find all sorts of stupid justification for your anger. I will admit, the AT&T contract sucks big balls. But every other reason you mentioned sounds like far-reaching attempts to purposely hate the product.
"AT&T contract sucks big balls"
I will never use an Iphone if I have to use AT&T!
AT&T can "suck my balls - two times"!
You'd let AT&T near your balls? Twice? Not me, brother. Probably end up needing surgery afterward. Anyway, you'd need to sign a contract first, I'm sure.
i dont have a droidX, but i do have a Nexus One (android) a iphone 2g, 3g, 3gs, a nokia n97, n95, and e71, a blackberry bold, and a bb curve2. and i have to say, the android platform wins hands down. for me anyway. nokia n97 used to be my favorite, but the OS is so 'clunky' its probably 3 years behind apple and droid. doing development work on nokia is just stupid, almost not worth the effort. apple is pretty tough, gotta jump through hoops.. its such a closed platform, and to really take advantage of it, the phone needs to be jailbroken. the android OS, and nexus one (as its the first one i've used) is refreshing, and honestly the nexus one is by far the best phone ive used in my life. its like a computer with a side of phone. Blackberry users tend to be business/government, that like the simplicity, and alleged 'security'.. iphone users are a different demographic altogether, generally rich/spoiled/'cool' kids... (no offence meant to you poor, or uncool iphone owners).. droid, for now, at least the N1, are geeks and nerds and developers.. im betting on android, and have been for months, way before this iphone signal stuff came out. just my 2 cents.
I stand corrected. It's probably the users I hate more. You don't know what you don't know. Don't tell me what you don't know. ie don't tell me how great it is when you have no fucking clue about computers. Sit down, shut up and play with your Iphone.
I'm an OSX and iphone user. Please don't hate me. When I bought my first Mac (May 1984) l learned to put up with the DOS users everywhere, who were unrelenting in their criticisms of anything non-DOS. But I liked WP on the mac, and the WSYWIG spreadsheet (from MS). Indeed Excel first came out on the Mac. As for programming and various platforms, that issue died years ago. Indeed lots of ubernerds use MacBookPros for very serious programming. Even Norvig, the "director of search quality" at Google, has used or does use one. Paul Graham also comes to mind. They're all over the place at MIT. I, like many others, don't want to write programs for the iphone or ipad. That's not the role they play in my day. But lisp, C, or Python on my MBP is fine. When it comes to big programs, "There's an app for that" in the Mac world to. There will never be one best anything in the tech gadget world (or the PL world...). Why take a stand that it matters? All phones will change. All content provision methods will evolve.
I have been into PCs since Compaq and their Destop Pros in the late 1980s. I have all kinds of things to make the PC sing, both technology wise, and music wise. So I dreaded the fact that all of my daughter's middle-school friends were getting Macbooks. How can I put all my knowledge and software to work on an Apple product? She's now starting high-school (9th grade) and my wife and I just got her her own Macbook - because it will now run PC software as well as Apple stuff (I know. It has for a while). Best of both worlds. With one laptop she can do a school project with classmates who have Macbooks and with classmates who have PC laptops. The best of both worlds. And all my PC software doesn't go to waste.
DD
" lowest common demoniator of computer user"
Now GSatan, (I was going to call you GS but politeness got in the way) can you tell me how to present the above statement to people without coming off as a Steve Jobs Helps Knobs disciple. It's getting awkward in certain social situations when people start to look at you like your one of the great unwashed because you don't own an Apple product.
Please advise because I'm dropping friends like flies.
I think of them the same way as Toyota. Toyota makes appliances for people who hate cars. Macs are great if you want 1 source for everything and 1 way to do everything. Like a toaster with a single button.
Both Apple and Toyota make competent products, and sell them to lots of people, but how much money they make doesn't change my user experience in the slightest. The cheerleaders yapping about their share prices are bragging about how much they overpaid for their appliance.
As a car enthusiast and someone who's interested in and understands technology, I have no use for either company's products. I'd rather buy something more flexible, higher performing, and all around enjoyable. Here's a great metaphor:
http://img.kyon.pl/static/img/remiq.net_7082.jpg
No disrespect intended but comparing anything to a crackberry is not a good analogy. I hated that damn thing and went back to my Motorola Startac rather than use that thing. Yes, the signal sucks on iPhones. It doesn't suck so bad that you can't use them. I will check out the droid on your recommendation though when my Startac gives up.
Anyhoo, believe it or not most people are not developers and could care less about developing their own apps any more than they want to write a wash cycle program for their washing machine. They just don't care. It's something they buy because it does what they want with minimum fuss. If it happens to perceived as cool and shiny or hip or whatever even better.
I'll tell you one thing, I can hold the DroidX inbetween my asscheeks and still get call signal.
Care to post a picture?

You waited until the last sentence to let us know why you like the DroidX so much? Seriously, though, Apple designs appliances to be appliances. If you want to program an iPad or iPhone, break out your MacBookPro and go to town. You don't have to go through the AppStore for in-house projects. Yet if you prefer the DroidX, and your "controlled" users like them, it would be silly to buy something else.
How many Evos has HTC sold? Though so.
If I had a dollar for every time some analyst or media type declared Apple dead, toast, kaput, I could treat Mr. Middleton to a very nice dinner at any NYC restaurant he chooses.
I think it'll be a little wrong to compare iPhone itself versus EVO. However, compare iPhone sales versus Android phone sales and you'll see a clear winner: Android.
Apple will lose simply because of the numbers game. This is very much like the 1980s when Apple battled IBM for the introduction of the home PC. IBM won because other manufacturers produced IBM-compatible PCs. The Apple only had the Apple IIe, which they sold the hardware, OS, and software. Developers then went to the platform with the biggest number of consumers which was IBM/DOS at the time. Then came along innovation through the form of Windows and the rest is history. Android has the momentum, market share growth, and eventually will have the innovation being an open-sourced platform to allow developers to dream up anything and allow it to be done on their platform. Can you do that with iPhone? Heck, you can't even change your battery.
Apple has ALWAYS been a niche market for the techno-tree-hugger crowd. It will rightfully be put back in that spot going forward.
And Apple will likely continue making more money than any of the Android sellers.
Apple shot itself in the foot with shoddy engineering. That is the way it works in capitalism. You screw up - you fail and go the way of the Studebaker.
Does QE 2.0 include a bailout of Apple?
shoddy engineering or suicidal Foxconn day wagers building Apple phones?
THE BEST I-PHONE vs EVO Comparison:
http://www.break.com/index/iphone-4-vs-htc-evo.html
Either you are clumsy or just not real bright... There is currently a three week hold time on the iPhone 4, and they are producing millions of these devices. For you to suggest a bailout of apple just demonstrates your ignorance on this subject. Also, I own one of those "shoddy" engineered phones and I can't lower bar strength no matter how I hold the phone. This is a problem because consulting firms have been hired to make it a problem...

If you subsititute "Dell" for "Apple" the critique works for me.
That is only because you are know nothing about what you are talking about...
Dell produced a product with faulty capacitors. Apple's antenna issue only exists because marketing/consulting companies have been hired to make it an issue.
tgatliff: You do realize that my comment meant "that critique is true if applied to Dell, but not to Apple"? Indent problem?
