I think it is more dirty, because we have allowed it.  The idea that people should treat each other with respect has morphed into a nightmare called political correctness; shame has been stripped from society, and replaced with the idea that everyone is a victim.

There aren't anymore pedophiles today than there were forty years ago.  The difference is that today, kidtouchers aren't afraid they're going to end up face down in a swamp somewhere.  They can instead look forward to rehabilitation, a guarantee that they're going to get another chance.  Getting pregnant doesn't mean you're sentenced to losing your childhood and a life of difficulty, you just have a quick procedure; problem solved.  Thieves aren't really to blame, it isn't their fault that they weren't born with the same advantages as the person they took from.......  It goes on forever.

Modern communications have simply helped to normalize abnormal behaviour.  Personal responsibility is gone from our society.  I'm not a religious guy, but there is going to be a reckoning.  Soon.  There is no alternative, we have reached a point where we don't even take responsibility for feeding ourselves anymore.  That is the essence of unsustainability.

While I strongly believe that TPTB are well served by mind numb robots eating take out food and glued to TV's, I do agree with the flip side of my argument that we are being fed what we have asked for.  Nothing breeds apathy like a fat stomach, Bud Light and 106 channels of cable.

Did you look at the interactive map of unrest that was put up the other day?  Look across the world and see what's happening.  Did you notice the two ironic/satirical events in the U.S.?  MacDonalds may have to raise prices, and Starbucks is booming.  Contrast that with people rioting because the increase in the price of grain is eating up 20+ % of an income that wasn't enough to survive on in the first place.  What do you suppose the percentage of Americans are that understand (or try to anyway, I have a pretty full stomach too) what life outside the Skittle and Rainbow universe we live in is really like?

I have to agree with DosZap on this one.  Look at the effort people put into finding out what the hell is going on. Internet, ZH, Blogs, papers, AlJazeera, obscure links to tin foil helmets, all because there is no MSM outlet that even tries to get the truth out.

US citizens are not looking for truth. They want factoids to support their line of thinking. It is much more different.

Why you might see more people looking for alternative sources to feed them with factoids? Because they are living a life of disconnection between themselves and the rest of the US citizens.

The great US machine is no longer working for them. The MSM target meaningful people, the ones for whom the machine still works. Because they are the ones who are going to vote as exclusion in the US translates into rejection of the two  parties and no longer casting a vote.

The MSM serves what people who are still in wants to hear. They largely prefer to see Charlie Seen enjoying the US way of life than news that might question their way of life and its sustainability.

The other US citizens, the ones who are been tossed out of the bowl, are looking for factoids supporting their view that the machine got corrupted, explaining therefore why they are no longer part of it.

The very idea that the US machine has reached the end of the rope in their case, that the machine can no longer support them and include them is odious to them.

In the US, the information is secure the most efficient way you can imagine because the information is public and people know the information but prefer propaganda over it.

The MSM sells propaganda to a public that demands it. It is mutually beneficiary. People in the US want to believe, they want to forget they know.

People who ignore this reality and live in the US might endanger their life.

Thing is, I'm still waiting (probably hoping naively) that the military is going to side with the people.  Shit, they just showed protesters standing on top of APC's and cheering.  Mombaruk is maybe weak enough that the army understands where their bread is buttered.

Plus, with all the rumors that Mombaruk has fled already, maybe the army is just sitting around waiting with the rest of them for the announcement to see who their new boss really is before they decide what they're going to do.

We'll see.  Interesting times.

"El Baradei is nothing more than a UN puppet."

Couple things:

1. Uhhh, who isn't?

2. Mr. El Baradei showed grande cojones in refusing to knuckle under to extreme Western/Zio pressure about Iraq's non-existent "WMDs"

Seems to me he'd be more independent of mind and likely more concerned with actual Egyptian interests than monkeyboy Mubarak.

Mr. El Baradei did stand up to Western Pressure on the Iraqi Nuke question, that was principled and courageous, in similar circumstances would have Obama or any other Western leader done the same? Not if it wasn't written in the script I think. I find it difficult to believe Egypt is a spontaneous event and not organized by the Islamic terrorist wing. War on Israel without Egypt would be difficult. Trading a moderate dictator for Sharia "freedom" is not, IMHO, an improvement and quite distant from the ideals that supposedly sparked this "revolution".

I found a list of 17 currencies that are pegged to the USD.

Netherlands Antillean guilder, Aruban florin, Jordanian dinar, Bahrain's dinar, Lebanon's pound, Oman's rial, Qatar's rial, the Saudi riyal, Emirati dirham, Maldivian rufiyaa, Venezuelan bolivar, the Belize dollar, the Bahamian dollar, the Hong Kong dollar, the Barbados dollar, the Trinidad and Tobago dollar, and the Eastern Caribbean dollar (Joseph Nicholson)
It should also be reminded that countries trying to acquire gold/Euro/Yen or stuff like that are losening their link to the USD through diversification. So far, the accusation of pegging currency is a posteriori observation. Countries that go through troubles go through because of an alledged peg to the dollar. Of course, that could not be because of the US monetary action, irrespectively for peg or not peg. So provide a list of pegged currencies so that predictions can be made  before observation.

A "revolution" can never triumph in a country like Egypt if it's a "middle class revolution". The only chance a revolution like this can have is if the poor masses from the poor districts of Cairo join the protests, and the working class launches a general strike. The revolution in Tunisia only could triumph because the trade unions and the working poor from the peripheric neighborhoods of Tunis joined the fight. In contrast, the "middle class revolution" on Iran has failed, before the passivity of the working poor masses.

Right, super tankers are too large and can't use the Suez; they have to go around South Africa. I think I read that some of the newest container ships being built by Maersk are also to large to go thru the Suez.

I take it you guys haven't been following the news. There have been attacks against the Egyptian Christian community in recent months, and a large number of Muslims came forward to serve as human shields to protect Christian services over Christmas. The Christians are now reciprocating.

I do not believe it is.  I take heart at the notion that people are figuring out that their differences have been exploited because it suits TPTB.

The mere act of people from two different religions standing together to defeat oppression is IMHO, monumental.

It is similar to right/left ZHers finding common ground on issues where both parties would have previously said none existed.

It's not. But do realize that the West was happy to take it as their job to f*ck Egypt up in the first place. Nationalist and pan-Arab Leader Gamel Abdul Nasser had them on the right track to a happy and sustainable future. So of course he had to go. Just another well-timed coronary, completely coincidental. Pay no mind to that whole cui bono thingy.

I guess even mild old Anwar Sadat wasn't compliant enough to Western/Zio interests, so he, too had to go. They had their murderous "Muslim Brotherhood" (read: our masonic cousins Living Their Mission in the ME), bump him off. Nice broad daylight hit.

Hosni Mubarak was the pick. With him they finally got the whole package. Complete tyrant, enthusiastic traitor to his own, utterly corrupt and devoid of an ounce of moral fiber. Yup, he's our guy.

Monkeyboy Mubarak kept the lid on a simmering pot, but that has apparently run its course. Whatever now emerges in Egypt, be honest enough to realize the West and Israel now get to deal with the unintended consequences of their selfish, murderous policy of oppression and economic strangulation of ordinary Egyptians.

Good on ya Egypt, kick all the scumbags out of Egypt. Then come to the USA to show us how it's done.

We seem to have forgotten how to deal with the tyrants and parasites infesting us here.

I presume Egypt has the same problem as most other countries.

A small rich minority own most of it (land, stocks, bonds) They collect the rent, dividends and coupons. They are under-taxed so they get to keep most of it. When another middle class person folds, the rich buy up their land, stocks and bonds, and collect even more rent, dividends, coupons from their slave work force.

And so it goes on relentlessly. The rich getting richer, the middle class disappearing. The poor getting ever poorer.
Eventually it snaps when the poor can't even afford food any longer and they have nothing to lose. That's what we are seeing.

Snapping here soon.

Per the progressive god Alinsky, you can only have a successful revolution after a reformation, meaning as you said, the people realize they have nothing to loose by overthrow and everything to gain. We're on that relentless march here but I'm still seeing a lot of new SUV sales so it's business as usual. As a side note, the god Alinsky says without a reformation, a revolution can only end two ways: (1) in failure (2) tyranny. That looks more possible to me at this time than revolution.

Remember when CNN showed the world and the Russians Boris Yeltsin standing on an army tank and giving his speech? In those days CNN was the news network. Today, we all watch Al Jazeera, when we can.

The fact that a news network out of Qatar is a lot more informative than anything that you can find in the United States says a lot about the situation around here. And no, you cannot find Al Jazeera on cable TV. Cable companies refuse to add it to their line up. Idiocracy is closer than you think.

Good morning Suez!

Rumors, musings and other tidbits trickling through an internet blackout (censorship):

-El Baradei is clearly a US pawn/agent, advancing himself as a 'candidate' for a new (pro-West, pro-US) government. No surprise. He also thought Iraq was loaded with WMD. His backers undoubtedly have a simple plan: spread some gravy around, buy publicity and favors, come off as a 'healer' and 'law and order' candidate, then Egypt can resume business as usual with ;gradual' social reforms.

-The Kuwait government has been offered $5,000 per citizen as 'relief' in order to pre-empt unrest. (Source, CNBC)
