Follow Egypt's Big Day As Millions Take To The Streets

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: Semi-automatic gunfire now heard in Alexandria.

For Egypt, it is now or never. With millions out on the streets in Cairo and other cities, the Egyptian population will likely not have another chance at such a massive showing of popular expression of anger against President Mubarak. For those who wish to follow today's million man march, can do so at the usual places: the Al Jazeera blog, the video feed below, the Guardian blog, real time mappable tweets, and of course, the video feed below.

Many European governments will pay their cowardice for not taking a tough stance against Egyptian regime; many European governments will be held responsible for leaving the Egyptian people alone in facing the repression of a corrupt regime, many European government in 2011 will experience the same protests we are witnessing in Egypt.
Europe will be the next battle ground against corrupt politicians and rotten banksters.

Jordan's miltary is closely alighned, and fiercely loyal the King. The people asked for the sack of the PM not the king. They got it. There wont be protests; they love their king. And he really isnt that bad. Plus his wife his wife is hot! Jordan is not Egypt. Also, the MB just called for the people to prepare for war with Israel and the closing of the Suez canal. That aint good at all. I have no idea why ElBaradei is lining up with these smucks. But I hear mist dont like either of the two so...my bet is still on miltary control with a liberal (by egpytian standards) general taking control.

The closing of the Suez is likely a foregone conclusion. All it would require is a few Chinese Silkworms or French Exocets against the oil supertankers as they traverse the canal.

Of course, maybe the military escorts could prevent such an attack, at least until Hizbullah whips out the Sunburn.

This is sound logic, but I fear you will be attacked by the small strain of neocons that frequent this site.  As I'm sure you know, their two trademark features are quite easy to spot:

1.  Paranoia (i.e., "We have to fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here"); and

2.  Savior complex (i.e., "If we don't liberate/defend/fight for [GOVERNMENT X] the people will be further oppressed")

Like most people here, I don't subscribe to the blue team/red team paradigm...but Repubs - neocons in particular - are among the most deplorable people around.

This is another reason to love statists - always finding reasons, usually abstractions/boogeymen, to run and hide underneath their beds.

Wait, that's right.  My guess is you'd love nothing more than to get the call to put on your government (military) costume, complete with medals signifying past glory or somesuch nonesense, and trot off to fight the threat du jour.  Then you can return and say "I told you so" .... while keeping an eye out for the next threat.

Statists like you are worse than cowards.  They are naive simpletons who have been deluded to the point that they actually believe they are helping a cause by killing other people.  How shameful.

Well, that is fine and dandy, as long as you understand that you have made a conscious choice to allow this to be your narrative. You see a fight to the death for all of the marbles. This is because you choose to see it this way. I happen to see delusional assholes threatening to kill one another.

You have more in common with your sworn enemy than you care to realize.

Islam is not a problem any more than Christianity or Judiasm or Shinto or Mormanism or the Branch Dividians. The problem arises when people start the killing in the name of. Choose your god, then offer him the blood of your enemies. Surely, this is the road to salvation in your mind, is it not?

And that is exactly my point. You are one and the same, and you offer nothing to humanity. You are a blight. Go off and become dust. Bravery does not equal the ability to take life away. Hold me in contempt if you wish, although know that I don't hold anything for you. You and your kind are too unimportant to waste another thought on. Good day, sir.

Being suspended upside down supposedly causes a more agonizing death. After about 12 hours of such restraint, and as blood pressure builds up in the cranium, the condemned prisoner would suffer a series of massive cerebral vascular accidents (stroke).

Also, many such executions were performed against two 45 degree vertical beams anchored to the ground in the form of an "X".

Nope. Doesn't sound pleasant at all.

It became our business when we freely sold some prime equipment to Egypt and Saudi Arabia.  Note some of the pictures of Egyptian M1 tanks doing crowd control.  Should things go bad, we'll get to see pictures of M1's running over crowds out of control.  Bad, PR that is.

Suspicion is human enough, it's the death of empathy that signals the end.

As a culture, I saw us cross that rubicon in our missing remorse over the hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq.

Once people have reached that level of moral/human bankruptcy, they are incapable of caring even about one another.  Or maybe even themselves.

Egypt protesters play down Islamist party's role:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jan/31/egypt-protesters-islamists-m...

"There is widespread exaggeration about the role of the Brotherhood in Egyptian society, and I think these demonstrations have exposed that," said Khalil al-Anani, an expert on Egypt's political Islamists at Durham University. "At first the movement showed little interest in the protests and announced they weren't going to participate; later they were overtaken by events and forced to get involved or risk losing all credibility."

Egypt's ongoing intifada or uprising has been largely leaderless, planned initially by secular online activist groups and quickly gathering a momentum of its own, as protesters managed to beat riot police off the streets and inspire belief that Mubarak's security forces could be overcome.

Even on Friday, when the Brotherhood finally threw its weight behind efforts to bring down the government – a stance its leadership initially held back from – Islamist slogans were noticeable by their absence, and the formal contribution of the movement remained limited.

"Like many others, I participated in these protests not as a Brotherhood member but as an Egyptian, even though both labels apply to me," said Mohamed al-Assas, a 35-year-old media production worker in Cairo. "Many of the older political leaders, not just of the Brotherhood, but of other formal parties as well, were not so enthusiastic about the demonstrations. But that doesn't matter because this is a youth revolution – we don't need leaders to tell us what to do."

The Brotherhood factor:

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/MB02Ak03.html

Demands on the streets for a one-way ticket out for President Hosni Mubarak will forge a path to free and fair elections and a role in government for the Muslim Brotherhood. Contrary to alarmist rightwing sirens, no "Islamic fervor" envelopes the Middle East, and a Muslim Brotherhood refuting violence and bowing to secularist majority opinion in a post-revolutionary Egypt cannot possibly spook the West.

"Egypt is now off the grid. Four days after the Egyptian government ordered Internet service providers to disconnect from the Internet, the country's last working Internet company has abruptly vanished from cyberspace. Noor Group, a small service provider that hosted Internet connections for the country's stock exchange and other businesses, became completely unreachable at around 10:46 p.m. Cairo time (Eastern European Time), according to Earl Zmijewski, general manager with Internet monitoring company Renesys. 'It looks like they're completely lights-out now,' he told IDG News' Robert McMillan. Thought to handle only about 8 percent of the country's Internet connections, Noor had served as a critical lifeline to Egypt since the government had ordered service cut early Friday morning. Nobody is sure how Noor was able to keep operating, even as larger ISPs such as Vodafone and Telecom Egypt voluntarily cut their Egyptian networks off from the rest of the world."
