Follow Egypt's Big Day As Millions Take To The Streets
Update: Semi-automatic gunfire now heard in Alexandria.
For Egypt, it is now or never. With millions out on the streets in Cairo and other cities, the Egyptian population will likely not have another chance at such a massive showing of popular expression of anger against President Mubarak. For those who wish to follow today's million man march, can do so at the usual places: the Al Jazeera blog, the video feed below, the Guardian blog, real time mappable tweets, and of course, the video feed below.

I think China left the team... http://www.zdnet.com/blog/perlow/egypt-blocked-in-china-is-internet-access-a-human-right/15746?tag=nl.e539
Mubarak stew, 'tators are mmmm tasty.
I was just wondering...
If the army would drop a few napalm bombs on that square.... would there still be a protest?
You sound like an idiot.
LOL brilliant observation, where have you been? the ZH comment sections are rapidly descending into yahoo forumdom
But I actually dropped in not to comment on your comment but to point out that there is trouble brewing in Jordan
Ah yes, Jordon. The true Palestine.
+1
I don't know what 'Jordon' is. 'Palestine' however, consists of a fair amount of real estate, including al-Quds and the rest of land stolen by white, European, imperialist ethnic cleansers.
Jordon = typo of Jordan, I assume.

Sudden Debt is not an idiot. He just gives himself room to be one when the mood strikes him. Too much belgium waffle syrup.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKdBld6sbYM
Yes, he gets a little antsy in the pantsy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3_94bxAHl0
Sudden Debt is easily the funniest poster on ZH. Perhaps you just need to lighten up and not act like some government censor.
I junked you for getting on Sudden Debt. You should know he is a good egg by now.
+++
Yeah, waffle breath is number uno and Sheep dog One a close second in humor dept.
Napalm in the morning is soooo Vietnam.
Yet more egg on the face of the US empire. I welcome it.
Obama claimed to be reading up on Reagan while in Hawaii.
He could have his Regan moment if he went to the West Bank, and said:
"Mr. Netanyahu, tear down this wall."
He will only say stuff like that if sure the people win. No hero or leader. Just an empty suit.
The clothes have no emperor.
You'll really know who's running the show by the free movement or not of people & goods into & out of Gaza. I don't think your average Egyptian cares for the blockade.
Looks like the palestinian resistance now has anti aircraft missiles.
You should stick to calling tops.
Really, really good call.
I'll second you on that.
Many European governments will pay their cowardice for not taking a tough stance against Egyptian regime; many European governments will be held responsible for leaving the Egyptian people alone in facing the repression of a corrupt regime, many European government in 2011 will experience the same protests we are witnessing in Egypt.
Europe will be the next battle ground against corrupt politicians and rotten banksters.
http://www.counterpunch.org/soldz01312011.html
Allahu Akbar
after how many times repeating that, will you feel like the idiot you are?
I got your back on this one.
A big +1
Maybe all Euros are not pacifist douche bags.
I'm no pacifist. I just don't care about much :)
Just the big things.
If someone praising God offends you, It's a personal problem not mine.
You would think the Freeperville derp squad would be all about praising God.
Another day another fucking Troll
And this is the guy that had the audacity to try to make Sudden Debt look bad. Probably not a troll. Probably just a d-bag.
^^^^ that.
God willing.
I junked you because if you would have wrote that in Arabic you would have got junked.
Insha Allah.
Maybe you could just get a picture of Mohammad for your avatar...
What's Dog got to do with it? Dyslexic I am. Or Yoda.
The New York Post is reporting that the FBI/NYPD is briefing the TBTFs that their top execs are being targeted by Al Queda.
Yeah right!
The TBTF's are just trying to justify government security from the more likely domestic threats.

Watch for a run on the banks when they reopen....food is short too...and will be from here on out...
Just imagine the logistical problems to bring food and water for a crowd of 1 million people on that square.
If that crowds demands aren't met pretty fast, hunger and thirst will create a angry mob.
And as the cities logistics are already broken, it just adds up.
I never understand why people want to go to Times Square for New Years Eve for the same reasons. Getting drunk and then standing in a confined area sounds awful. Of course they might get the chance to hear Justin Bieber or some other crappy act. That is a lot more important than changing your government.
Jordan´s Prime Minister just resigned......hmmmmmm...going global....are you listening and watching Obama?????
Obama's got 28 more years before the protests start.
:) +
Americans have certain way in dealing with presidents that outstay their welcome :)
Where's John Wilkes Booth when you really need him?
Jordan's miltary is closely alighned, and fiercely loyal the King. The people asked for the sack of the PM not the king. They got it. There wont be protests; they love their king. And he really isnt that bad. Plus his wife his wife is hot! Jordan is not Egypt. Also, the MB just called for the people to prepare for war with Israel and the closing of the Suez canal. That aint good at all. I have no idea why ElBaradei is lining up with these smucks. But I hear mist dont like either of the two so...my bet is still on miltary control with a liberal (by egpytian standards) general taking control.
In other news a thousand sharks have been spotted off palm beach but i thought the bankers were in Davos. Must have misread it.
Also, the MB just called for the people to prepare for war with Israel and the closing of the Suez canal.
Source please.
http://www.jpost.com/Headlines/Article.aspx?id=206130
hope this doesn't upset your apple cart...
DaddyO
Who would expect disinformation about democracy in Egypt from an Israeli source? You'll have to do better than that. The MSM is saying the MB is playing it like the Fonz.
The closing of the Suez is likely a foregone conclusion. All it would require is a few Chinese Silkworms or French Exocets against the oil supertankers as they traverse the canal.
Of course, maybe the military escorts could prevent such an attack, at least until Hizbullah whips out the Sunburn.
The closing of the Suez is likely a foregone conclusion.
No it's not. Remind me who is closing the Suez canal?
You mention Hezbulah. They're in Lebanon. Lebanon is not Egypt. What is your point?
You appear to show concern by such an eventuality. Hizbullah? Maybe I meant Hamas. They're in Gaza, right?
Or maybe I meant to say that a team of Mossad operatives could pull off such a caper...and blame it on Hamas.
Or maybe I meant Islamic Jihad...
Yeah mubarak is out of his fraidy hole in the defense ministry and running around shoring up his government. In the future moslem brotherhood have a government in exile ready to walk into all the.bureaucracies and take over if a president is.hiding like a rat and afraid.to get out of his.hole.
Troll, you might want to clean your keyboard, I think you have something stuck between the "space" key and the "." key
Looking forward, I'm expecting that this affair and what will likely follow in other Arab nations is going to have serious implications for us in Iraq. World opinion is swelling behind Arab self-determination. If the Iraqi people push back, we're going to be exposed as "dictators" there.
As for the Muslim Brotherhood boogie man, I couldn't care less. It's none of our goddamn business. If we'd leave these people alone, there would be no reason for al qaeda to exist.
The Bath's would mop up.
This is sound logic, but I fear you will be attacked by the small strain of neocons that frequent this site. As I'm sure you know, their two trademark features are quite easy to spot:
1. Paranoia (i.e., "We have to fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here"); and
2. Savior complex (i.e., "If we don't liberate/defend/fight for [GOVERNMENT X] the people will be further oppressed")
Like most people here, I don't subscribe to the blue team/red team paradigm...but Repubs - neocons in particular - are among the most deplorable people around.
+ a cost plus contract
How can we do that when they are living on all that oil of ours??.
Yeah, we pretend that's the question that answers itself . . . and one way only.
Seems to me we could be honorable capitalists. It's not like these nations are self-sufficient. They have no choice but to bargain in good faith.
Of course, that would require good faith on our part.
Ah, there's the rub.
Wishful thinking is not a valid policy when you are tasked with the security of a nation.
durrrrrrrrp
Rodent, note trait (2) in my comment above. It must be tough carrying around that cross of yours, especially with all those unappreciative people trying to deter you from your task.
Ignore the threat if you want. I choose not to.
OK, I'll bite - what, exactly, is the threat?
This is another reason to love statists - always finding reasons, usually abstractions/boogeymen, to run and hide underneath their beds.
Wait, that's right. My guess is you'd love nothing more than to get the call to put on your government (military) costume, complete with medals signifying past glory or somesuch nonesense, and trot off to fight the threat du jour. Then you can return and say "I told you so" .... while keeping an eye out for the next threat.
Statists like you are worse than cowards. They are naive simpletons who have been deluded to the point that they actually believe they are helping a cause by killing other people. How shameful.
Read the Koran, the Suras and Hadiths.
Jihad is a duty. That it is a personal spiritual quest is a lie. The Prophet practiced violent jihad. He is not fallible.
A duty....you mean, like a task? As in, you see something that needs fixing, so you fix it? That kind of duty?
Hmmm, sounds like both sides use the same definition. The cause is different, though: one carries a red white and blue flag...the other carries a crescent moon.
Golly, if I didn't know any better it sounds like you are being manipulated.
But that can't be. Nope, not a chance. You have chosen to not ignore the threat.
There's a good sleep. Now to find your bible, flag, and military costume.
I have history on my side.
The same thing is written in the Bible Rodent, yet Rome is no longer forcing Christianity down everyone's throat -- especially in developed nations -- do you know why that is?
EDUCATION and STANDARD OF LIVING. The worst forms if Islam can only exist in Aphganastan, and the worst forms of Christianity can only exist in the South. :P
Bwahahaha.
Most terrorists have come from educated backgrounds, not the sticks.
ahhh, it's starting to make sense now. Educated people scare you.
When they turn their knowledgeto making bombs, yeah, I find that nervous making. Don't you? Insha Allah includes accepting collateral damage that westerners would never approve. Hope you are not shopping the wrong market place when they want to make a statement.
Come on Rodent. This is where you fall off of the sled.
Insha Allah includes accepting collateral damage that westerners would never approve.
Like you live in some kind of dream world. Let me ask you, How much collateral damage is acceptable to the West? Rodent, we are the world leaders in collateral damage generation. I mean how many millions of VietNamese and Cambodians did we collateral damage? Who has been able to top Hirshima or Nagasaki for single day catastrophic collateral damage events?
We also do special collateral damage events like Agent Orange and Depleted Uranium, that just keep on damaging.
Now dust yourself off. Stop with the crazy talk. And get back on the sled.
Back on topic child, I am speaking about Islamic governments.
Apartheid Israel's duty is to steal land and kill babies.
Why aren't they your enemy?
Which English transliteration did you read? Was it Sunni, Shia'a, Sufi or Wahhabi influenced? In which century was it transliterated, and what was the native language of the primary translator? What country was it published in? And which accepted Hadiths should I consider? And what of the Qudsi Hadith?
a "task" is something assigned to you by someone else.
Since when?
A task is a duty. You see it needs fixing, you fix it. Life is very simple when you discard the bullshit.
ah, the empire's definition. It helps when you get to define both what is "broken" and how to "fix it." There, I discarded the "bullshit" You're right, life is simple when your thoughts match
Heh.
At this point we must wait for events to prove who is right. I'm good.
You are aware that some causes are not explicit, aren't you?
Good, No, you are some kind of herp a derp crusader in some kind of Mental war with Islam. It's pretty obvious to an objective observer that you are losing this war. Badly.
Free Constantinople!
Free al-Quds from the white, European interlopers. NO MORE APARTHEID!
Back to Poland and Russia with the ashkeNAZIs.
It's not likely that Istanbul will be conquered in the near term.
But then again, Israel and Turkey haven't exactly been the best of friends lately.
consider yourself discarded
life must be simple when your favorite technique for solving problems involves bludgeoning it with a stick until it complies
The old ways are the best.
Have I mentioned the paper I'm writing on the effectiveness of mass crucifixion for pacifying a subject population?
You go fight your holy war if you want to, just leave me the hell out of it. I'd rather convert than kill another human, and I would probably rather die than convert.
Also, life is anything but simple, no matter how efficient your bullshit filter is.
Don't worry. We won't. Hope and change generation must learn the hard way.
On the plus side, Europe will burn first and we will have time to mobilize.
Awesome time to be alive.
you need the Islamic boogey-man just as badly as the 'aq extremists' on the other side need you. You use one another to highlight how we're all going to die if the threat isn't quelled. If not them, it would be the communists, the terrorists, or the Russians or whichever non-specific threat-of-the-week will convince the largest percentage of the population to 'mobilize'.
We have always been at war with Islam.
Only occasional cease fires. One of us will win. Until then, it goes on.
Well, that is fine and dandy, as long as you understand that you have made a conscious choice to allow this to be your narrative. You see a fight to the death for all of the marbles. This is because you choose to see it this way. I happen to see delusional assholes threatening to kill one another.
You have more in common with your sworn enemy than you care to realize.
Islam is not a problem any more than Christianity or Judiasm or Shinto or Mormanism or the Branch Dividians. The problem arises when people start the killing in the name of. Choose your god, then offer him the blood of your enemies. Surely, this is the road to salvation in your mind, is it not?
How can I get into Valhalla if I do not die in battle?
I respect my muslim enemies more than I do you pacifists. You I hold in contempt.
"I respect my Muslim enemies more than I do you pacifists"
And that is exactly my point. You are one and the same, and you offer nothing to humanity. You are a blight. Go off and become dust. Bravery does not equal the ability to take life away. Hold me in contempt if you wish, although know that I don't hold anything for you. You and your kind are too unimportant to waste another thought on. Good day, sir.
Beautifully argued.
Oooh, like in 'Life of Brian'?
Always look on the bright side of life (whistling)
Remember. Being tied to the cross rather nailed is a much worse crucifixtion. More pain and more humiliation to your victim.
Being suspended upside down supposedly causes a more agonizing death. After about 12 hours of such restraint, and as blood pressure builds up in the cranium, the condemned prisoner would suffer a series of massive cerebral vascular accidents (stroke).
Also, many such executions were performed against two 45 degree vertical beams anchored to the ground in the form of an "X".
Nope. Doesn't sound pleasant at all.
It became our business when we freely sold some prime equipment to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Note some of the pictures of Egyptian M1 tanks doing crowd control. Should things go bad, we'll get to see pictures of M1's running over crowds out of control. Bad, PR that is.
Are we also responsible for anyone run over by any Fords or Chevys we sold them?
Grow up, you morons.
I agree we should leave these people alone. It's not our business. That's why they call it self-determination. Re. war weapons. I don't think the Army will turn on the people.
AP (Absolute Propaganda) is reporting for the American sheeple "coverage" of the "peaceful protests" stating there are "ten of thousands" of protestors.
EFFF OFF!
AL FUCKING JAZEERA and the UK's Guardian eta al are reporting the REAL story- MORE THAN ONE MILLION. WE CAN TRUST NOTHING FROM AMERICA!
Notice on channels like CNN thew show close up shots of protesters mostly, while Al-Jazzera shows a far shot where you can see the sheer number of protesters.
subtle propaganda.
AL JAZEERA now reporting 2 million people.
Just checked CNBS- "while in Egypt the army pledged not to clamp down on protests by thousands in the capital Cairo."
DO YOU BELIEVE THIS FUCK? THE MARKETS ARE RALLYING AGAIN!
So play it.
De-couple your politics from your economics and try to profit?
Yeah you tell em
Egyptians gather for million-strong protesthttp://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2011/feb/01/egypt-protests-live-updates
IMO, the US has moved to the top of the list of MOST CORRUPT nations in the world. China and the US are tied for MOST CORRUPT. IT'S OFFICIAL.
corrupt is putting it kindly. this country is just blocked. i mean CNN has a segment, how to spy on your kids. man, i hope some kids take this offense and start spying on their parents, and turn them in. this country is so sick, blame the young for our mistakes. well, i need to go throw up my rice.
i hope some kids take this offense and start spying on their parents, and turn them in
i hate to say it, but I think you've just outlined the strategy. When we've become so fearful that we start to suspect our family members, the end can't be far off...
Suspicion is human enough, it's the death of empathy that signals the end.
As a culture, I saw us cross that rubicon in our missing remorse over the hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq.
Once people have reached that level of moral/human bankruptcy, they are incapable of caring even about one another. Or maybe even themselves.
If they were undifferentiated zygotes, instead of living-breathing human beings, you can be damn sure the Far Right would care.
"I'm against a policy where you have to destroy life in order to save life"
George W. Bush, commenting on Stem Cell Research, several years after he ordered the invasion of Iraq.
the sublime candor of unadulterated double-think can be quite breathtaking
so we win for the most bankrupt corrupt nation that meddles in others affairs?
read you wrong... deleted.
yes YAHOO SAYS 1/4 MIL
He will announce he is to resign tonight
This revolution is waiting for a small organised group to take control of it, in the same way that Lenin and the Bolsheviks did in 1917.
Interim revolutionaries first...
Whos gonna be there Alexander Kerensky..
Ya think the Atomic Energy Commission Czar will take hold?
Lenin and the Bolsheviks....AH YES the Jews once again. I dont know if Israel has an organized group like that in Egypt yet.

Egypt protesters play down Islamist party's role:http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jan/31/egypt-protesters-islamists-m...
"There is widespread exaggeration about the role of the Brotherhood in Egyptian society, and I think these demonstrations have exposed that," said Khalil al-Anani, an expert on Egypt's political Islamists at Durham University. "At first the movement showed little interest in the protests and announced they weren't going to participate; later they were overtaken by events and forced to get involved or risk losing all credibility."
Egypt's ongoing intifada or uprising has been largely leaderless, planned initially by secular online activist groups and quickly gathering a momentum of its own, as protesters managed to beat riot police off the streets and inspire belief that Mubarak's security forces could be overcome.
Even on Friday, when the Brotherhood finally threw its weight behind efforts to bring down the government – a stance its leadership initially held back from – Islamist slogans were noticeable by their absence, and the formal contribution of the movement remained limited.
"Like many others, I participated in these protests not as a Brotherhood member but as an Egyptian, even though both labels apply to me," said Mohamed al-Assas, a 35-year-old media production worker in Cairo. "Many of the older political leaders, not just of the Brotherhood, but of other formal parties as well, were not so enthusiastic about the demonstrations. But that doesn't matter because this is a youth revolution – we don't need leaders to tell us what to do."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jan/31/egypt-protesters-islamists-m...
The Brotherhood factor:
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/MB02Ak03.html
Demands on the streets for a one-way ticket out for President Hosni Mubarak will forge a path to free and fair elections and a role in government for the Muslim Brotherhood. Contrary to alarmist rightwing sirens, no "Islamic fervor" envelopes the Middle East, and a Muslim Brotherhood refuting violence and bowing to secularist majority opinion in a post-revolutionary Egypt cannot possibly spook the West.
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/MB02Ak03.html
Do you sell bridges, too?
You're kidding right? If the MB has the support of 20% of Egyptians, that is more than enough to stage a takeover of any freely elected government which is less well organized.
Don't forget the murder of any real moderates who pop up.
Lot of political power when you can get away with killing the opposition.
"Egypt is now off the grid. Four days after the Egyptian government ordered Internet service providers to disconnect from the Internet, the country's last working Internet company has abruptly vanished from cyberspace. Noor Group, a small service provider that hosted Internet connections for the country's stock exchange and other businesses, became completely unreachable at around 10:46 p.m. Cairo time (Eastern European Time), according to Earl Zmijewski, general manager with Internet monitoring company Renesys. 'It looks like they're completely lights-out now,' he told IDG News' Robert McMillan. Thought to handle only about 8 percent of the country's Internet connections, Noor had served as a critical lifeline to Egypt since the government had ordered service cut early Friday morning. Nobody is sure how Noor was able to keep operating, even as larger ISPs such as Vodafone and Telecom Egypt voluntarily cut their Egyptian networks off from the rest of the world."

Sharia law is incompatible with Democracy. There will not be democracy; the Arabs are intolerant and not ready for it. It is high time the United States mind it's own business- it will see soon enough.
If you haven't noticed the people are calling for Democracy not Sharia law.
Try your fear mongering tactics at old people's homes and mega churches. That is more along the lines of your target audience.
No quarrel with you, no fear mongering intended or implied.. Just saying:
What kind of "democracy" would you expect when most there prefer Sharia, where women are not equal??
You sound like a bitch.
