Not true. Last summer, we had an actual tornado skip through Brooklyn, Forest Hills in Queens (right over a Jewish retirement home), and then out through Whitestone, also in Queens. We still have areas where the uprooted trees have not been completely cleaned up. Had my wife and I been home, we would have been close enough to shake hands with Dorothy and Toto as they spun past...

My daughter and grandson just escaped from Joplin to their home in Miami Ok Sunday , now cell is heading right their way , not having hit Tulsa yet . My wife and I are glued to the Weather Channel. They don't have many basements to seek shelter in in Ok or Kansas

The video that is attached to this article shows nothing left of a GA family's house except the front of it after a recent tornado. FEMA says its livable.
My house was totaled in the recent Alabama tornados. We filed with FEMA and they offered us an SBA loan. A friggin' SBA loan?! I have not seen one FEMA truck, employee, stand, logo, or any sign of a physical FEMA presence anywhere despite my community being trashed. Every person I have spoken to who had their home hit by a tornado says the same thing. I am yet to hear of anyone that has received any help from FEMA at all, so for all of you that are not in a catastrophe zone, don't believe the propaganda. FEMA is not here helping in Alabama as far as I can tell . . .

Insurance is starting to come around after some wrangling. Their first settlement offer was insulting, but my general contractor has gotten them to agree to pay more than double what they initially offered. I don't need help from FEMA. Local churches sent 50 people unannounced to my cul de sac the first Saturday and did over $10,000 worth of tree work for me. My point is that we don't need big government to take care of what strong communities do for those in need. I must say, the love and community here in Alabama has purged a lot of cynicism from my soul . . .

We had 11,000 homes damaged and about 2000 made uninhabitable from the flooding in Nashville last year. FEMA issued payments of up to $27k for individuals homes as well as money for hotels and to cover some losses to renters. There were also small business loans made available.
Almost everyone affected in Nashville was not in a flood plain and thus not required to buy flood insurance. Everyone should make sure tornado damage is covered if there is any history of tornado damage in your area. That might affect how FEMA compensates individuals suffering tornado damage vs unprecidented flooding where most are not covered for floods, but I'm not sure.
Economic losses are much smaller than loss of human life and we can be thankful for that... Larry K.

I would be really nervous if I lived in the midwest right now. These storms have been coming through Calif on a much smaller scale. And blowing up when they hit the midsection. We are predicted rain in Cali tomorrow. Nervous to see how that blows up when it hits the middle. We almost never get rain this time of year.

Our town is on edge. The police had a secret email to be on the highest alert tonight as it is expected to be the worst night of hail and tornadic activity to date. Once police man's wife sent this "secret" email on to her friends and quickly went viral. Needless to say the authorities are not happy with the cop and her wife. I for one don't understand why the public shouldn't get the same notice. It's my right to panic if I want and exactly what are the government officials so worried about. I just won't let my family sleep upstairs and will be on alert. Why hide this info? It's totally wreckless to keep the public in the dark about this sort of thing. They can't protect me but they also don't want me taking precautions either. Unbelievable.

There's nothing your police department knew that you could not have learned from the Weather Channel, Storm Prediction Center, Accuweather.com, American Weather Forums, etc. The high risk area was defined by NOAA Tuesday morning and the PDS Tornado Watches were announced as soon as they were put up.

In response to the Canary Islands scenario, I believe people who buy into it are ironically uninformed about waves and tsunamis. Tsunami's develop from a massive displacement of water deep under the ocean. Millions of tons from the Canary Islands collapsing will produce a huge wave, but it's a different type of wave from a tsunami wave. It will initially be massive, but will die out after at most a few miles. Tsunami's caused by earthquakes start small and end big, this is the opposite. I'd be more worried about other things than the Canary Islands at this point.

As a long-time Florida resident I have weathered many Hurricanes, a few Tornadoes, and the occasional flooding from torrential rains associated with them. As a Utilities worker in the lower ranks of management, I have made it my business to be aware of potential hazards associated with low probabilty / high impact natural disasters. Man-made ones too.
It is part of my job, you see.
There is nothing paranoid, or "Doomy" about it, it's just part of the job.
While the case can be made for optimistic projections, experience has taught me to be more circumspect.
If only our friends in Japan had planned for what turned out to be a truly worst-case scenario, perhaps they could have avoided the situation they now face. But it is too late for that now, isn't it?
Rest assured, if you are a resident of the U.S. your tax dollars are safely spent for wars, Granny's pills, and bailing out failed bankers.
