Let's say you're talking to an acquaintence who says, "Well I thought Obama made some good points in his speech yesterday."
You could try Freddie's tack and say something like, "FUCK YOU IDIOTIC BRAINWASHED COCKSUCKING LIBTARD SCUM!!!!"
Or you could try mine, which is more along the lines of, "I thought it was dishonest posturing, myself. The guy's been in office for 2 and half years, and we're still bogged down in Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, plus now running a new excursion bombing Libya; not a single important financial criminal has been brought to justice; and Obama-care is the worst possible approach to addressing any of our issues with how either citizens OR government pay for healthcare. He's pretty much an epic failure who apparently makes speeches some folks find compelling but who is presiding over a continuation of the past 4 administrations."
It probably won't convince someone instantly that Obama's a horrible president, but it's also not going to cause the angry kneejerk defense mechanism which further reinforces that person's belief that he's the best guy to vote for in the future. Most importantly--there is a chance it might encourage someone to give it some thought.
Well said bd. OTOH, unless Americans start taking third party candidates seriously in 2012 they will once again only be choosing between rhetorical style R or rhetorical style D, while continuing to get the 'business as usual'.
I personally have no hope for a political solution, but I will do my part by never again voting D or R.
What I suspect is that if any non-major candidate ever pulled 5% of the vote, his platform would be immediately divvied up by the major parties in an effort to prevent any further growth of 3rd party influence.
I think as a society we long ago passed the point where tears and blood became mandatory, but I'll go through the motions.
